We had to deal with a gas light, which gave me the coughs for months, as we didn't have your fancy-schmancy doctors or medicines or nurses. Also, instead of getting your namby-pamby 'detentions' and 'cafeteria duty', we were given 12 hits on our bottom (not your fancy butts) with a cane if we sat down, 6 on our hands if we moved our non-writing hand, 24 if we wrote with our left hands and be locked in the stocks in the classroom for 3 days if we talked or breathed.
