  1. Sophomore at Purdue studying aeronautics..sounds like me! Except I'm actually going to UTexas. I'm actually only 80% sure that I will actually become an engineer, considering it is a pretty technical career. I'm not afraid of the mathematics involved which is what brought me to want to study aerospace, not to mention I've got a deep interest in aviation and hope to get my PPL sometime next year possibly if I can secure funds.

In a nutshell, I'm thinking "do you want to make planes, or do you want to fly them?" Obviously I would rather fly, but I think that engineering is a better career because you are contributing to society with your innovations, rather than just flying them (which requires much experience!), but I don't know if that's what I was meant to do.

That's a really striking coincidence. I'm actually from Texas. Considered UT myself, but didn't want to stay in state. Something about wanting to see more of the world; I'm sure you understand! ;)

Also, I too would love to fly. I worked at an airport over the summer, and just being around all the aircraft was amazing.

I myself am not sure what field of engineering I am going to pursue yet, I am torn between aeronautical and mechanical.Perhaps even computer engineering....

Come to aeronautical, we have... uh... airfoils! But seriously, aeronautical engineering is awesome. I've taken Aeromechanics I and am currently in Aeromechanics II and Intro to Aerospace Design. To be fair those are pretty basic as far as aeronautical engingeering goes, BUT if you have any questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them! Or just tell you what I know about AAE in general! Best of luck! ^_^

  2. Christian here.  :muffins:

Well, I'm from a conservative Bible-Presbyterian church, and I believe in the reformed faith (Calvinism).

Glad to see other Christians here!

    S. D. G.!

Wow! After our conversations about classical music we have something else in common! I too am Presbyterian, a member of the PCA. Definitely a Calvinist. Soli Deo Gloria, indeed! :)

  3. EDIT: If I'm too late, I can wait.

    Anyway, your work looks awesome!

  4. Thanks for the comments guys! It's kind of as I suspected. The good thing for me is that my plans for this OC are strictly limited to fanfiction. I have no intention of roleplaying with him (I understand that this would be quite ridiculous), so relating him to a canon charcacter is something I'll be ok with.

As for the story's plot, cliches and the like: I feel good about my story thus far. I know that what I'm doing with the story isn't the newest thing ever. It's not breaking radical new ground. BUT that was never my intention. My intention is to tell a good tale with good, well-developed characters, and hey, maybe it's a bit cliche too. Predictable? If you don't have any introduction (like you guys did, sorry!), not necessarily maybe just a bit. Especially if you see my sig...

Again though, a big BUT: what I'm really going for is, well, charm. I want my story, when read, to feel as close to watching an episode of MLP as it can. Think about your favorite episodes of the show! Were they cliche? Were they predictable? Most often, yes. Not always, but often. Do you still love those episodes? Of course you do!

And you want a sneak peak, eh? Hmmmmmmm, let me finish the chapter I'm on, and possibly one more. Trust me when I say it's only just off the ground.

  5. I hope this is the right section for this question.

Anyway, I'm just curious. I'm relatively new to the fandom, but as a writer, I have taken an immediate and distinct interest in writing fanfiction. All has been coming along well since I've started writing: I like the OC I created for my story, I like the direction of the story, and I think it remains charmingly true to the dynamic of the show.

Yet now I've run into a mental wall. Perhaps I'm making too much of a big deal out of this issue in my own head, but I really really really want to follow the common rules of thumb, so to speak, of writing fanfiction so that my story can be the best it can be and be received well by you delightful people.

My question is this: is it frowned upon for an OC to be familially related to one of the Mane Six? Is this seen as Mary Sue-ing? I only ask because the vast majority of OC's I see are standalone, if you will. They have their niche in Equestria and pretty much exist (for the most part) independent of the Mane Six.

I've done my best to make my OC three dimensional. I honestly wouldn't say he's overpowered or overly perfect. He has flaws, just like the rest of us. But did I go one step too far?

    All opinions are appreciated!

  6. Yours was very easy and fun. I made 2 different versions of it, one with coloed text, and one without. here is the one with color;

i personalty like the colored version more.

Thank you sooooo much! I do love them both, and I will most likely be switching back and forth between them at various points in time. In honor of your work I'll start with the colored one! ^-^

  7. If you ever have a question about it don't be afraid to give me a holler.  I'm bored off my ass right now and I can probably tell you if a mechanic is blowing smoke up yours.   If you really wanted me to think about the oil issue I'd have to ask you a few more questions.

I just may here pretty soon. As I mentioned before, it's currently at an independent mechanic who specializes in European autos. I've heard very good things about the place, and he seemed like a pretty sharp guy on the phone. If I don't get any satisfactory results, I'll hit you up.

  8. I've hit 115 mph in my VW GTI. It was the stupidest thing I've ever done while driving by a long shot. It was fun, but I wouldn't ever dream of doing it again. My car comes stock with a governor at 130 mph anyway, and I just have no reason to push it that hard.

EDIT: Oops, I just realized this topic was dead. I don't recall how I found it, which perplexes me. Oh well! :P

  9. Too bad you're not from my area, I have a VW guy that knows more about those cars than the engineers that built them.  A turbo wouldn't be a bad guess though, I'm surprised 3 dealers had difficulty identifying the problem.

Here's the thing, you pour out black smoke but the sensors in that car aren't going to throw in a ton of extra fuel unless it sees the airflow past the turbo, which would first lead me to believe that something has come loose or tore on the charge piping (your intake piping from the turbo to the engine).  What gets me is that you're burning oil at a high rate as well.  I would have to check into a few things.

But a lot of times, there is a tear in the charge piping which will cause the car to drive normal when the turbo isn't adding pressure to the engine, but as soon as it does add pressure it leaks all the air out from the rip (which on this car is air that the sensor has already accounted for) and you get not enough air into the engine and too much fuel, causing the black smoke and power loss.

Hopefully it goes well for you man and it's something simple.

That sounds like an adequate explanation to me, especially given that I've heard similar opinions recently. As for the oil, I too am stumped. I just want the problems to be fixed!!

  10. @MaestroNep9997, You're my hero! I also love classical music, as I learned to play double bass in high school. Though I must say even our tastes in the classical genre differ quite a bit! I'm a fan of Mahler, Khachaturian, Shostakovich, Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, and a little bit of Elgar, for starters. Still, very cool to hear your favorites though!

  11. No criticism here, just wanted to say I enjoyed it! It's certainly better than I could ever do, so I admire your talent.

Specifically, I must say I like the OC design/attire as well as the shading.

  13. If you're still taking requests, I would absolutely love a sig with just my OC's name, "Shadow Dash" in a white Old English-looking font, accompanied by his cutie mark:

    post-18456-0-86645300-1376375075.png

All this on a cool dark background of your choice!

    You're the best!

  14. Yes indeed, I do have the DSG. And don't get me wrong, I love driving the thing around. However, recently there's been a significant drop in power, especially under heavier than average acceleration, such as getting up to highway speeds at a normal rate (up to ~70 mph). On top of that, when I do accelerate like that, I pour out black smoke. And on top of that, I'm burning oil at an obscene rate. It's been to three different dealers, and now it's at an independent mechanic who will hopefully know what he's doing better than those who have worked on it previously. Something's gotta give here soon.

  15. I'm actually quite surprised by the number of people who don't drive.

I come from Texas, where I'd say a car is all but a necessity. Everything is spread out. If I wanted to bike to an actual grocery store, I'd be gone for three or four hours. Plus I absolutely love driving, usually in silence. It's always peaceful and relaxing, as I don't have to worry about anything but getting where I'm going. That said, when I'm on my college campus during the school year, I bike.

My car: currently a 2006 Volkswagen GTI, complete with custom emblems (did them myself) and what I believe to be a bad turbo. It's in the shop now, and it could either end up fixed or sold depending on the cost of the repair. If I sell it, who knows what I'll drive next, but I will need a car.

My bike: a super awesome Specialized Allez Sport Triple in electric blue with red grip tape and red/black tires. I loathe pedestrians when I'm in the saddle, so watch out! ;)

  16. EDIT: I'm reworking this post entirely, as I don't think I laid out my thoughts well at all.

I'm humbly requesting someone to do a quality drawing of my OC, Shadow Dash, for me. I don't care about the style--sketch, color, you name it. I'm leaving it up to the artist. All I would like is something done on paper to use as my avatar. Flying pose preferred, determined facial expression.

My OC can be found here, and, should you need it, here is his cutie mark.

Although I can't pay cash, you would be doing me a huge favor, so in addition to loving you forever, I would also be more than happy to return the favor in any way I'm able. I have many talents: writing (working on a fanfic, so I'd be glad to include your OC if you'd like), editing/proofreading, lyrics, poetry--just not visual art.

I have no timetable, I'm not picky. I'm a beggar, so I can't be a chooser. Thanks for your consideration!

  17. Hey, I realize it's been a few days since anyone posted in this topic, but I feel I may be able to contribute if you could still use a helping hoof. I would consider myself a well above average writer in general and an aspiring fanfic writer (my first is currently in the works, coming along rather slowly). I would also be willing to proofread/edit if that would be useful.

I'll send you a PM here in the next few minutes. Otherwise, let me know if I can do anything for you!

  18. I'll start my own mining company and hire a lot of ponies to excavate a huge stripping mine.

I'll buy your metals to further my efforts in ushering in a new era of technology for ponykind. Slip me a few discounts and perhaps I'll thrown in a prototype flying contraption, when I actually invent one of course.

  19. If I'm an earth pony, I suppose I would open up a sort of tinker shop where I could make a living with a metal work practice.

Eventually I would progress far enough into my trade that I WOULD USHER IN A NEW ERA OF TECHNOLOGY FOR PONYKIND! THE SCIENCE HAS BEEN DOUBLED!

Er, excuse me, I accidentally channeled my inner Luna there... But, yes, metal work, and eventually, flying technology so that all ponies might roam the clouds.

  20. @Exuro Spark, Glad to hear that's working out for you! Yeah, I'm at the main campus for my school, and its very much out of state, so expense is something I'm familiar with. Luckily I got some partial scholarship money to help out.

@SunBurn, That's really cool! I'm actually quite curious, what would you be doing working at a distribution plant? What kinds of tasks are involved in a job like that?

@Colt, All I have to say is you must REALLY like coding to work that much! I'll take my CAD programs any day as I'm a well below average programmer myself. But hey, the more power to ya!

  21. I really thought I replied to this topic... Did my post appear at all? Get deleted somehow? Or am I just crazy?

Oh well. If I'm not too late to help, I think Ashen Glow would be a fine name.
