Russian Orthodox uses the Julian calendar so the religious Christmas celebration is in January. But in the Soviet era when religious celebration was effectively banned, they started having huge celebrations on New Year's. Then the USSR collapsed and Western influence seeped in, and many people celebrate on December 25th too. Any excuse to have another party, right? Russia's version of Santa Claus is Ded Moroz (Old Man Frost) and his granddaughter Snegurochka (the Snow Maiden).

What's the best handmade gift you have given or received?

That chess table sounds really neat! Yeah, I draw and knit hats and things all the time and my family and friends can get that sort of thing from me at any time of the year. I know they do appreciate it all but I would like to break away and do something different at Christmas. -
What are you getting for Christmas this year? (2013)

Oh, do you celebrate any type of winter holiday? -

I don't really want anything, but the radio in my car is dying, so my dad said he would replace it. and that will count as my present. I LOVE giving gifts and throwing parties and stuff for other people but I'm terrible and feel awkward receiving gifts and whatnot. -

Hahah I WISH I coul make a sword! That would be awesome. -
“People talk sometimes of a bestial cruelty, but that's a great injustice and insult to the beasts; a beast can never be so cruel as a man, so artistically cruel. The tiger only tears and gnaws, that's all he can do. He would never think of nailing people by the ears, even if he were able to do it.” - from The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky

That is really cool! I think I might try to knit some infinity scarves/neckwarmer type things for my aunts. -
Thanks, I appreciate it. (: Thank you. I hope your friend is doing all right? It sucks that it usually takes so long to finally get a correct diagnosis, and in the meantime doctors often prescribe treatment that actually worsens the Lyme.

I've never played Final Fantasy so I'm not familiar with the original characters, but the pony designs are nice! I really like Squall and Cheery Fest.

Hah, that's interesting! I think it could make a nice wallpaper.

Aw, that's adorable! I do like the necktie.

Oh, he was attached to some people, but in a very . . . inappropriate way! But ooh, I'm glad your mom is okay. That had to be frightening.

I think two nights in a row is the longest I have gone without sleep.

All right, I'm searching for gift ideas. Since money is tight, cheap DIY/handmade gifts would be great, but I don't want it to be something boring or tacky. You can say "it's the thought that counts" but I do want to give a good gift, you know?So tel l me: what is the best handmade gift someone has given you? What have you made for others that was truly awesome and well-received? -
Thanks so much everyone! Thanks! I was actually toying with the idea of making an ask blog for my character Smoke. It might get me to draw more regularly. Thank you so much! Aha, I definitely understand the money situation, and there are sooo many artists I want to commission. But thank you so much for the thought! Oh gosh, I realized I didn't even post the picture of Luna I drew a while back. I haven't really drawn the official characters that much and I'm not super proud of this, but it's worth showing.

I'm so sorry you had to sell your tablet. Your art is brilliant! I wish I could convince you that even if they're "just" black and white pencil sketches they are fantastic. If I was in a better fnancial situation I would want to commission one, and I'm sure other people would too. Not to come off pushy -- I understand if you really aren't comfortable with it. But I do love your art and will keep an eye on you!

You have a really cool, unique style! Very edgy and dynamic. I would love to see Doctor Whooves in your style, if you feel so inclined!

It's very cute! If you don't mind one little critique, it looks like his head and neck are just a wee bit big for his body. But otherwise, very nicely done!
-
Nice work, it's very cute! I have so much trouble drawing show-style faces at that angle but yours is great.

Although I sincerely wish no one here had it, chances are there is at least one other user out there who has Lyme disease. Lyme disease is transmitted by ticks for sure, may also be passed from mother to child, and possibly by mosquitoes. Lyme disease is much more prevalent and dangerous than major health organizations like the CDC claim. Because of all the controversy/politics surrounding it, getting tested is hard enough, and tests are very unreliable. Lyme can effect any part of the body and symptoms often mimic other diseases. Treatment is expensive and not always efective, especially if it has been left untreated for a long time. I've had Lyme since 2009, and because my immune system was already shut down because of other sicknesses it hit me really hard. I had some antibiotic treatment and my health had ups and downs. Last winter started a big downward spiral but I'm finally getting treatment that seems to be helping. If you're interested in reading more about my Lyme, I have a site about it here. Here are links with more information on Lyme in general: International Lyme And Associated Diseases Society Lyme Disease Association Lyme Disease Network I just wanted to spread some awareness, and see if there was anyone else with Lyme who wanted to rant and rave about its craziness. Trust me, I'll understand. (: (PS, it is okay to post all those links, isn't it?)

A lot of those "crazy laws" you see in lists online and whatnot aren't actually ridiculous. The actual wording of the law is usually pretty reasonable, maybe just a little vague. What you see in the lists is just the most bizzare and absurd way in which that law could be interpreted or applied. Anyway, how about some horse facts? Horse teeth never stop growing. Horses' hooves grow approximately 0.25 in a month, and take nearly a year to grow from the coronet band to the ground. A horses stomach should always make gurgling noises, an absence of them can mean colic. Arabian horses have one fewer vertebrae and one less rib than other breeds. Horses have the largest eyes of any land animal. Horses produce approximately 10 gallons of saliva a day. The intestines of a full grown horse are 89 feet long on average.

Hahah yep, thank you. (: And you're Cousin It! You're beautiful! May I ask what your tattoo says?

She's lovely! And Imp is such a cute name. Unfortunately the only llama I've really been acquainted with was a male who was rather crazy. I've read about how llamas behave when they grow up isolated without older llamas to teach them manners, and it sounded like this guy. :/

Who would like to try riding a Pony/Horse drawn vehicle?
Stina replied to Sholem Itzhak's topic in General Discussion
I've ridden in a horse-drawn wagon! It was all right, and I think it might be neat to learn how to drive a horse/pony, but I do think riding is more fun. I agree with KatieHooves that using using carriages in the city is not as grand and wonderful as it may seem. Sure, it might seem cool to see such a majestic animal in the middle of a concrete jungle, but that's not where they belong. A lot of carriage horses in big cities are kept in rather poor conditions, but even if they are taken care of as good as possible, I believe they'd be much happier in a less urban environment. -
