  1. Spike in "Secret of My Excess" made no sense to me at first considering what we know about dragons.

A dragon's growth can be quickened through collecting. However Spike turned into a full-grown dragon in ONE day from just collecting random things. If its that easy to grow up, how come the teenage dragons in "Dragon's Quest" just grow up already by collecting apple tree leaves?

This is my theory for why Spike's growth spurt was SO intense. It is due to Spike's upbringing.

I think mother dragons teach their babies at a young age to have a VERY high standard when hoarding treasures. Gems and precious metals only! Ignore the rest! Those baby dragons are thus raised to focus their greed on just those items and nothing else. Assuming that gems and precious metals are relatively hard to obtain where dragons live, it must take YEARS for an individual dragon to stash enough gold coins and rubies to obtain the greed needed to fully grow up.

Spike however was NOT raised by dragons but by ponies. He was not taught to discriminate between junk and treasure so when Spike's greediness took over, it wanted to consume EVERYTHING!

It explains why Spike grew up so fast and why other dragons (Dragonshy and Owl's Well That Ends Well) only had treasure in their cave and not random junk like Spike.

    EDIT:

Conclusion: According to my theory, Rarity would be the ideal mother dragon!

This makes sense to me. He grew the biggest when he stole Rarity so to him, she was more valuable than anything else. Wild dragons don't desire the same thing. They were raised to value gems and other forms of material loot to feed their greed.

This makes Spike even more dangerous than other dragons.

  2. Romance is one thing but the concept of an episode revolving around a "crush" is not impossible. Its an innocent feeling that even kids can relate to and learn from. I'm surprised no ones mentioned this yet because I don't think anyone noticed it; none of the characters hold any crushes on anyone anymore except for Spike. Everyone says Rarity's the one looking for love but that's not true anymore since the Blue Blood fiasco. If they're gonna make an episode that centers around lessons learned from having a crush, its gonna be about Spike. I mean, its one of the primary aspects about his character.

  3. Rarity and Fluttershy were mentioned as best friends in GiyC but after that there were no episodes where they were hangging out again. Same with Rarity and Pinkie after PyHD or AJ and RD after FWF.

I'd say the only true bffs are RD and Fluttershy because of their flashbacks and references to multiple epispdes like SSCS2K or even the butterfly migration in DQ.

  4.

Not to mention on the back of the SOME MLP Trading card it calls Spike's growth Spurts "Teenage Growing Pains"

So at the very least, while still small in stature, Spike like the rest of the mane six is more comparable to a human teen then a baby or adult.

If those cards are canon then that would mean Spike really isnt a baby because babies dont get teen growth spurts. Its obvious that the reason why ponies call him a baby dragon is because DQ has proven ponies know nothing about dragons.

  5. I think Spike has the potential to be one of the show's more darker characters because his future living among ponies is uncertain. In SomE, he reveals his true self as species should be which is a powerful and dangerous creature and he comes to realize it as well during the bridge scene where he raises his claw over the gigantic claw print he made during his rampage. If Rarity never snapped him out of it he would've stayed like that for the rest of his life. Its why I want Spike to win the unicorn of his dreams because without her he'll spend the rest of his life as the monster he's naturally supposed to grow into.

  6. I don't think he's too young for Rarity or that Rarity's too old for him. They all act like teens and Spike is one of the more mature behaving characters on the show especially compared to RD or Pinkie.

As a dragon he really is a baby because his species lives for thousands of years but as a pony he's very much a teen like the rest of them.

  7. No one knows how old they are officially because no ages are ever mentioned on the show. They're also in a different world with different rules. They could still be children even if they own their own business and live by themselves because that's not unheard of in cartoons. Look at Ash from Pokemon. He's only 10 but he travels the world instead of going to school. Look at the Strawberry Shortcake characters. They all look like children but they live by themselves and own their own houses.

Here's my head canon. Spike will be the first dragon of his kind. He is a runt dragon that has no hoard of treasure and never learned the skills needed by a wild dragon to become powerful. But Spike discovers that if greed makes dragons turn into ferocious monsters, generosity (or friendship) makes them turn into "something else." Spike learns he has always had a hoard of enchanted treasure and that is his pony friends especially Rarity. Like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, Spike turns into a new type of dragon never heard of before and he uses his unique dragon powers to protect his treasure of friends.

  9. I'm pretty damm sure dragons age WAY slower than ponies, or most of the magical creatures around. If not, there's still the "One hundred year sleep". That is one factor we cannot deny (as much as we may not like so. Because something like that seems like a dragon thing that can't be ignored for the body's sake).

What about a spell that turns Spike into a pony? Is that impossible? I mean, in fairy tales when a princess kisses a frog it turns into a prince. Besides we don't know if Spike is anything like any dragon we've seen already. Even Garble and his friends weren't even sure he was a dragon at first.

  10. He's a draconequus so maybe there used to be an entire species of him long ago. Where did he get his powers? I dunno. Maybe he posses the Elements of Chaos where as Luna and Celestia possessed the Elements of Harmony at the time so they're like god-like creatures of their respective species.

Draconequus also means dragon horse in latin so maybe he's the off spring of a pony and a dragon corrupted by the Elements of Chaos. Ponies know nothing about dragons yet they managed to have Spike's egg somehow. In addition, an unnamed dragon played a historical role in the origin of one of the pony's holidays Hearts and Hooves Day. This makes me think dragons may have had a past hidden history with ponies and Spike and Rarity were once not unique.

Dragons like gems and unicorns are also attracted to them at least its suggested based on the abandoned gem mines under Canterlot. Maybe there's more "significance" to the Spike and Rarity angle other than just looking cute on the surface.

  11. This is something that just came up to me when talking about Spike and Rarity, my fave platonic couple so to speak (I WISH they could be together...cannot only because of age, FUDGE!). However, IF the writers where to create a couple, make a shipping canon, drives me to three questions. One, which would be first that they would use? What could be possible according to known circumstances? And what would you like to see that WOULDN'T break such circumstances?

Why can't Spike and Rarity work because of age? We don't know how old they are or how "one of them" grows. For all we know, dragons like Spike could evolve like pokemons.

Oh and its strange how easy it is for fans to see Rarity as a character looking for romance yet completely overlook Spike is the only other main character aside from Rarity also looking for romance. In fact he fantasizes about it a lot more than she does.

  12. Actually every time she experiences high society she ends up having a bad time of it and sees the hollowness of it. I think -- eventually, if she has the time and is lucky -- she will grow out of searching for status and her mate choice will be a down to earth pony with no special status that loves her dearly.

    post-3032-0-18871800-1344945772_thumb.png

Down to earth... no special status... loves her dearly...

Not only does Spike have "no status", he is a slave. Since Rarity isn't exactly the "Cinderella" type, her ending up with Blueblood or any high society pony is a perversion of a fairy tale. That's like Belle ending up with Gaston and we all know Belle ends up with the Beast to save him from himself.

Y'know, they already referenced that in SomE. If it wasn't for Rarity playing a role in Spike's life, he would have stayed the greedy beast that his species has always naturally been meant to become.

  13. In my opinion Rarity does do things that looks like she contradicts her element because it usually involves prioritizing her own self interest above anyone else. In addition to this, generosity is misunderstood by people. Just cause you like to give your friends a lot of stuff doesn't mean you're generous. Generosity involves sacrifice to oneself and the only time Rarity ever did that was cutting off her tail for the serpent's mustache. She didn't even know her tail would grow back instantly after getting the elements at the time. You could say there was also that time she was making dresses for her friends but I only saw that the other 5 ponies were being ungrateful jerks to her.

I think its interesting that the writers could use Spike as a counter balance to her in terms of generosity/greed. Especially since greed biologically influences dragons on the show. I bet there's going to be a future episode where Rarity expresses true generosity and Spike might be the recipient of that act.

  14. Discord aside, griffons and minotaurs are both mythical creatures created from interspecies parents. You can add manticores to that too and all these creatures exist in mlp world. They're even sapient.

But even if Spike and Rarity were to have thier fairytale ending together in the show, I doubt biology between them would be explored. They already have more than enough stuff for the writers to work with. Both are represented by gemstones. Both have a greed/generosity duality. One is a dragon while the other is a unicorn. Its classic beauty and the beast. They were made for each other.

  15. Spike is a child, Rarity is an adult. If they got together it'd be pedophilia, I don't know why anyone thinks it'd be okay.

A lot of people really think Spike is very young including Cathy Weseluck. At least according to her responses during SDCC. She said the first time she voiced Spike, she was under the impression he was a baby until the producers kept telling her to "boy him up." So she kept acting to age Spike until it was to the producers satisfaction. Its why Spike's the straight man of the show and is usually more mature than the 6 ponies themselves.

  16. Spike gets turned into a pony is one of the oldest ideas ever. I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet in an episode. But Rarity said it herself. "My little Spikey Wikey is perfect the way he is." Spike doesn't need to turn into a pony because Rarity already likes him as a dragon.

  17. I think after what the writers learned about Spike and Rarity after SomE and DQ aired, there are a lot of fans that found their relationship heartwarming. The writers made an episode that encouraged shipping between the two by treating Spike's feelings for Rarity in S2 as something sincere compared to S1 as a depressing running gag. I wouldn't be surprised if their fairy tale like relationship moves another step further in S3.

The thing about these characters is you can't apply our world's science to them. Age and species are thrown out the window when you live in a world where magic is canon and the characters involved are both mythical. How many times has Spike's body transformed? Twice. Once during a flash back in CMC and the other during SomE. Both of which show that he transforms into something "different" than what he appears at present. The writers are trying to send out a message that Spike has not reached his potential yet. I read rumors going around that Spike will transform again in S3. What if this transformation involves making Spike more physically suited for Rarity. He could be accidentally transformed into a pony or he could evolve into a completely different type of dragon that grew up by being virtuous instead of being greedy.
