the future is going to be amazing!
I used to be a stranger replied to I used to be a stranger's topic in General Discussion
Yes but even if the United States and Russia declared war on each other tomorrow, the world would keep turning, eventually guns would stop gunning and nice things would still happen eventually. Hi Officially Looking. I'm Dad.- 38 replies

Oh that's right. There's going to be lots more "near future" sci fi movies that are suddenly going to be taking place in the past. Personally I'm looking forward to AD 2101.- 38 replies

Laser weapons also already exist. The hard part is making them small and hardy enough to be practical for usage. For example, there already exist functioning magnetic railguns that can fire iron shells at speeds of 5km/s. The problem is, they take as much power as what energizes a city, to fire one shot. It's going to be a while until people can mount them to ships, let alone make them into a hand-firearm.- 38 replies

Ion engines are already in use. They're not noisy nor very powerful like in Star Wars, but engineers like them because they're nigh-unbeatable for efficiency. You could get to Pluto with a fuel tank the size of the one in your car. But they're not practical for human passengers (yet) because that efficiency costs speed. It would take your car-tank-pluto-probe 40 years to get there. Space and time are the same thing! What do we want? Millicochranes! When do we want them? Millocochranes!- 38 replies

"Meme" is continuing to be a very confusing word. -
What things are you looking forward to? Tomorrow? Next year? Next decade? My birthday is coming up and I'm realizing how different the world is than it was just 10 years ago. In 2007 today, Portal and Team Fortress 2 had not yet been released. SpaceX, the company that landed the Falcon 9 rocket on a barge, had not yet launched the Falcon 1, and was an aerospace corporation on paper only. 3D Printing was still an infant technology. Youtube still had its original look, and Facebook had not yet been purchased by Microsoft. George W. Bush was still President of the United States. It blows my mind how different the world could be in 2027: The world population may yet exceed 8 billion. SpaceX may yet land humans on Mars, and Hubble will be replaced by the James Webb Space Telescope. VR headsets will replace movie theaters? Three more MLP movies due to the phenomenal success of the first one? What are you looking forward to in the future?

How large the space shuttle could be was partly limited by the size of the solid fuel boosters that were attached to the sides of the external fuel tank. Thiokol (now Orbital ATK), a company from Utah won the contract from Rockwell International to build them, and send the completed boosters to Cape Canaveral in Florida to be assembled and mated with each Shuttle Launch. While in the planning stage, this Utah-based company determined that the only way they could transport a fully fueled solid rocket booster would be by rail. And no matter what route was taken to deliver the boosters to Florida, any train would have to go through at least one tunnel. This meant that the booster had to be smaller than a railroad tunnel in maximum diameter. Now the North American/International Railroad Loading Gauge is what states how big rail tunnels can be in most parts of the world. The North American Loading Gauge was derived from a British Loading Gauge that dates back to 1830, when one of the very first steam railroads was built near Liverpool on Rainhill. The road between Manchester and Liverpool was what lead to the original width of early British steam railroads. Early rail track widths were such-and-such because they had to accommodate horse teams being able to pull the carriages if the locomotive failed for some reason. So the tracks were the same width as ruts which were already present in the road. Now these ruts had been there for over 1000 years, because they had been worn into place by carts and even chariots way back when. People made cart wheel axels the same width every time so that horses wouldn't have to wear-in new ruts as they traveled down the road. Thus, the size of the space shuttle was derived from the width of a horse's ass.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPcLie0HDXE This inspired me to think more about the relationship between our imagination and rationality. They're not opposing forces, but complementary perspectives on how to understand the beautiful world we live in, and to begin trying to fathom the even greater realities which we hope for.- 3,311 replies

Atheist bronies: Why not chat a bit?

If I recall correctly, the idea that "[a] god set the universe in motion but then didn't follow up on it at all" is called Deism. -

How have you chaps gotten on about Christmas-time and New Years? I hope it was enjoyable. -
If I recall correctly, the Army had actually been preparing for Downfall because the Manhattan Project was entirely secret. In anticipation of the American casualties, they prepared over 1 million Purple Heart medals, but stopped after Japan surrendered. The American Military hasn't needed to manufacture new ones since. On a different subject, it didn't clearly have its own Operational name, but the US Air Force did try test firing a Minuteman ICBM by dropping it out of the back of a C5A Galaxy aircraft, to see if ICBMs could be air launched. The result was "yes, but it's expensive, dangerous and stupid" which is why there aren't any more of those. Nuclear-tipped missiles exist, but not air-launched continental spanning ones.

Will complete my Mechanical Engineering Diploma this year. Promising to get a career in an industry I'll find interesting! I want to propose to me girlfriend Portland OR, Nashville TN and Charlotte GA are in for a real treat, come the August 21 Total Solar Eclipse. Though I'm sure ALL of Canada, United States, Mexico and Latin America will enjoy it too. First flight of the SpaceX Falcon Heavy I want to continue learning how to be a Leader, and someone who can pray and teach well. I want to learn how to bake a soufle. I want to eat an amazing sandwich.- 44 replies

Cuteness is related to attractiveness as well as general appeal. Darth Vader is appealing as a villain but he's not very attractive. His appeal comes from how interesting he is. A cat on a horse is also appealing but not very attractive. The appeal arises from our interest in shapes, textures and behaviors that we prefer. Soft fuzzy fur, large colorful eyes and playful demeanors are all things which contribute to appeal. This all said, I don't know about other people but I find it aggravating when cuteness is made to interrelate with sexual appeal, which I separate in my mind.

What's Your Favorite Science?
I used to be a stranger replied to Lucky Bolt's topic in General Discussion
I'm a layman fan of all sorts of applied sciences nearly by necessity, because I'm studying to become an engineer. Space construction, rocketry and aeronautical design are all practical outputs of metallurgy, physics, fluid dynamics, astrodynamics and meteorology. Am I the only one looking forward to Planetology becoming a word?
