  1. I will also post it here, but I could really use the views on my Fimfiction.net account, so if you would, could you read it here?

When Rainbow Dash acquired a Daring Do costume when Berry Punch moved away, she figured she'd only be using it on Nightmare Night. But when Rarity is in dire need of emeralds for a special dress suit for Soarin', Rainbow Dash and Soarin' venture forth to retrieve them from the paparazzi infested Canterlot and are in need of disguises. While they're gone, Twilight learns that it's better to let your feelings out, rather than bottle them up. But are the feelings what she thinks they are?

“No!” Dr. Negative cried, scrambling backwards on the ground as his own groaning servants began to swarm him. He managed to get a short distance across the courtyard before he backed into a wall. “What have you done? Wha-what have you done?” He fumbled through his satchel and seized a small vial with his hoof. His triumphant cheer was cut short though, as the vial was knocked out of his grasp and crushed beneath the hoard of drugged ponies. Frantically, he reached for his bag again, only to find it trampled beneath the hooves of a large red stallion; multicolored fluids coated the ground around it.

    “No!”

“It's no use, Doctor,” Daring Do called out as she watched the physician's struggle from her perch on the balcony above. “You did this to yourself.” She hopped off the railing and started for the door, walking passed a fedora-wearing Earth pony.

“You're just going to leave him?” he asked, following her back into the manor. “Seems a little cold for you, Do...”

Daring paused as the door shut, canceling out the screams of agony now echoing about the place. Her gaze fell to the floor with her wings. “It's not like he doesn't deserve whatever happens to him down there.” She shuddered. “Brainwashing ponies like that... It's... It's just wrong.”

When no response came, Daring's eyes shot up. She could handle danger; give her a crazed doctor with way too many drugs or an ancient temple filled with traps and she couldn't care any less—but him? She needed him. If she upset him—scared him off or ignited his righteous fury—she'd never forgive herself. A quivering desperation seeping into her tone, Daring asked, “You... You don't think I'm a horrible pony for this, do you?”

A brown hoof settled on her shoulder as Manehatten Silver looked her straight in her watery eyes. “No,” he said softly, pulling her into his embrace. “Negative's the monster here, not you.”

Daring choked back a sob as she nuzzled deeper into Silver's chest. “Wh-when he had you—back at the lab... You... a-and the syringe... When you... When you...” Her words failed her and turned into incomprehensible sobs. Gently, a hoof patted her back. Soft words were whispered into her ears, causing her to only hold on tighter to the stallion she'd so nearly lost.

“I was so scared,” she whimpered. Her whole body trembled in his forelegs, but he only held her tighter. “I wanted to kill him—I wanted to rip his throat out and stomp it into the dirt! I-I—”

“Shh,” Silver whispered, running a hoof down the pegasus's gray-scaled mane. “It's over now,” he said. “It's all over.”

“All I could think about was that night in Fillydelphia,” Daring continued, “And how stupid I was for walking out and... I'm so sorry...”

Biting his lip, Silver shifted his weight and looked away from his long-time friend and rival adventurer. “Look, Dare, you don't have to—“ A tan hoof interrupted him and jarred his face down towards Daring Do's. Her eyes shone like rubies in the dim light of the hall.

“Just shut up and kiss me,” she whispered, pulling him closer. Her wings flared as their lips furiously collided in a passionate—

“What?” Rainbow Dash cried indignantly, raising her hooves in the air. She glared at the book before her with furious distaste “That's... that's...”

“So sweet,” Twilight sighed dreamily. She closed her eyes and smiled, her tail lightly sweeping across the wooden floor of the library. “Don't you think so, Rainbow?”

“So stupid!” the pegasus finished, batting the novel aside. It flew across the room and smacked the wall with a ruffled thud. Paying no mind to Twilight's irritated stare, Rainbow began pacing around the room. “What about Rosetta?” she growled, flapping her wings furiously. She glared out the window at the sunset.

“What about her?” Twilight asked as she picked up her new copy of Daring Do and the Devious Doctor Negative and carefully placed it back on her personal bookshelf. “She's still back at the college, right?”

Dash huffed and blew a stray bit of her mane out of her face. “So?”

“So...” Twilight rolled her hoof in the air, gesturing for her friend to explain further. When Rainbow didn't turn around, she sighed and continued: “What's the problem?”

“Everything!” Rainbow roared, spinning around. Twilight stumbled back in surprise as Dash's hooves slammed into the floor and shook the picture frames on the walls. “How can Daring just... Why would she...”

Twilight's brow furrowed. “Rainbow?” she said slowly, watching Rainbow curse and kick another book into a wall. “Are you okay?”

“No!” the pegasus exclaimed, bringing her hoof to her forehead. “Yes!” She growled at the floor as Twilight stood up and stepped closer. “Ugh! I don't know! I don't get it!”

    “What don't you understand?”

“She kissed him!” Dash spat; just saying the words left a bad taste in her mouth. “I can't believe it!”

Frowning, Twilight gave her friend a curious look. “What's wrong with that? I think it's a very sweet conclusion to the story.”

    “But what about Rosetta?”

Twilight brought a hoof to her head and rubbed her temple. “I don't think I understand where you're going with this, Rainbow,” she groaned. “What do you mean?”

Dash rolled her eyes. “I mean that Daring totally belongs with Rosetta—not stinkin' Silver!”

Jerking her head back, Twilight's curious expression quickly switched from bemused to amused. An eyebrow raised as Twilight shook her head. “What?” she snorted. “You're joking, right?”

Rainbow's face hardened. Her wings ruffled. “No,” she said. “I'm not.”

“But there's been no evidence that Rosetta and Daring feel anything more than platonic friendship at all, Rainbow,” Twilight giggled despite Rainbow's steadily growing scowl. “Not a single scrap in the whole series.”

Dash's eyes drifted down to the floor and cursed silently. Without thinking, her gaze shot back to her friend and she protested, “They got milkshakes in the beginning of the book!”

“Oh,” she said, smirking, “Then it must be true love!”

“It was a date!” Rainbow stuck her tongue out. “And that's way better than some stupid kiss!”

“It was not a date!” Twilight countered, “Daring Do has never gone to her for more than advice or to hang out!”

“That's not dating?” Dash huffed, glaring at Twilight. “Daring's totally crazy for her!”

“Just because somepony gets a milkshake with somepony else doesn't mean that they're romantically involved, Rainbow Dash,” Twilight said, a hint of annoyance seeping into her tone. “How many times have we gotten milkshakes on reading days?”

Dash's wings flared and her ears slicked back behind her head as she turned to the side; the setting sun peered through the window and lit her face, coloring it red. Her cheeks felt warm. “I-it wasn't about the milkshakes, Twi...” she mumbled to the floor. “I mean, I could totally see that... that they were happy together...”

Twilight shook her head. “Rainbow, I'm sorry. I don't know how you got the idea that Rosetta and Daring love each other—let alone the fact that they are both homosexual—but it just isn't there.”

Rainbow's eyes never rose from the floor. There was a crack traversing the length of one of the boards on the far side of the room, she followed it across the floor to Twilight's hooves. “But... but it has to be...” she whispered so low that Twilight didn't manage to catch it. “Daring... Daring totally loves her...”

“Besides,” the unicorn added, tapping her chin with her hoof. “Daring and Rosetta would make for a very strange couple—don't you think so, Rainbow Dash? I mean, Rosetta's a professor at Canterlot University—it'd be awful hard for somepony as adventurous and free-spirited as Daring Do to stick around and be in a real relationship with her.”

Dash jumped to her hooves, her hackles raised. “She could do it if she wanted to!”

Twilight raised her hooves. “I'm not saying that she couldn't,” she reasoned calmly. A scroll on a shelf on the far side of the room lit up in a purple light. It floated over to the duo and presented itself to Twilight, who opened it. An illustration of a unicorn wearing glasses and a lab coat adorned the back. “And I guess I don't see any major flaws in their dynamic...”

Rainbow's face lit up for a ghost of a second and she looked at the floor once more. “See?”

“But, there's still the complete lack of anything beyond friendship exhibited in their actions, Rainbow,” Twilight sighed, setting the scroll down on her desk. “Just because they get along doesn't mean that they'd make a good romantic couple. Daring Do has been known to have a soft spot for Manehatten Silver—she is obviously in love with him if she asked him to kiss her.”

Dash’s smile faltered. Her eyes narrowed as she opened her mouth to say something, but before she’d even started to speak, the door to Twilight’s bedroom burst open and a little purple dragon crashed through. He fell to his knees, huffing and puffing as he tried to catch his breath.

“Spike?” Twilight cried out in surprise. The dragon continued to wheeze, but looked up at her when he heard his name called.

“Twilight!” he gasped, clutching his chest. His eyes were wide with panic. “She... they... help! It’s horrible!”

“Spike, how many times have I told you?” asked Twilight, an annoyed look in her eye. “Only come into the library in a panic when there’s an actual problem!”

“But it was a problem,” Spike pleaded, looking up at her with wide eyes.

“Spike, Rarity not having enough gems to finish a suit for a client is not a serious problem.” Twilight looked around Carousel Boutique for Rainbow Dash, who was busy poking a mannequin in the head. Twilight smiled at it. “Are you ready to go, Rainbow? We never finished our discussion.” At that moment, Rarity walked in from the backroom with her client in tow.

“Soarin’!” exclaimed Rainbow Dash, her voice cracking, as she darted over to the Wonderbolt. She quickly turned away and wiped a hoof over her face. She turned back. “I mean, uh, Soarin’. Hey,” Dash said, playing it cool.

“Rainbow Dash? I think I remember you. From the Best Young Flyers competition, right?”

Rainbow’s face lit up. “Uhm, yeah! I kicked all the other ponies’ butts! And the way I saved Rarity!” She did a small loop in her excitement.

“Ahem,” coughed Rarity, eyeing Rainbow Dash.

“Oh, uh, sorry. I guess it’s still a sore subject,” said Rainbow Dash, rubbing the back of her head. “Anyway, what are you doing here, Soarin’?”

Soarin’ glanced over at Rarity, and then lowered his head toward Rainbow Dash and spoke quietly so only she could hear. “Look, can we talk about this in the backroom?”

    Rainbow nodded. “Okay.”

Once they were in the backroom, Soarin’ grinned. “ Okay, I didn’t want Rarity to hear this, as she seems like the type to spread rumors, but I asked Spitfire on a date yesterday!”

“No. Way. You asked Spitfire out?!” exclaimed Rainbow Dash, fluttering lightly in the air.

    “We have a date tonight!”

“But why are you here? Don’t you and Spitfire live in Canterlot?”

Soarin’ laughed and smiled sheepishly. “Well, I, uh, wanted to look my best tonight, so I, uh, ordered a new suit.”

“But why here? Why Ponyville?” Rainbow raised an eyebrow.

“Well, I met Rarity back at the Best Young Flyers contest, and again at the Gala. She’s the only pony I could think to turn to outside of Canterlot. I can’t do it in Canterlot because of the paparazzi. Anyway, let’s head back out to the main room. They’re probably wondering where we are.”

While they were in there, Twilight remained outside, alone with Rarity and Spike. Oh no... thought Twilight. Soarin’ must be in there asking Rainbow Dash on a date! That’s why he came to Ponyville of all places to buy a new suit! But... I never considered Rainbow Dash would be taken away someday... I need to ask her now! There might not be another chance!

At that moment, Soarin’ and Rainbow walked out, Rainbow attempting to hide wild giggles and blushing lightly. Oh no... Twilight thought, crushed. I was right.

“So!” exclaimed Rainbow Dash. “Rarity, what’s the problem? Why can’t you finish Soarin’s suit?”

“Well, Rainbow, my dear, if you must know, I ran out of emeralds for Soarin’s suit. My most recent shipment was delayed, you see.”

“Shipment?” Twilight asked. “I thought you dug your gems up.”

“That was before I got more popular. In recent months, I began ordering them from a supplier in Canterlot. The problem is, the most recent shipment was delayed, and I don’t have time to dig new ones up and put them through the cleaning process before I can use them. Nor am I fast enough to go all the way to Canterlot to get them and still have time to finish Soarin’s suit.”

“I can go!” Rainbow Dash perked up. “I am the fastest pony in Equestria, after all. I’ll have your emeralds in no time!”

“Whoa whoa whoa, I can’t let you go alone! I’ll go too,” said Soarin’.

“But you’ll be recognized by the paparazzi. Speaking of which, so will I if you’re with me. Saving Equestria does get me noticed, at least in Canterlot.” Rainbow Dash brought her hoof to her chin in thought. Her eyes widened. “I know! Rarity, you got any cloaks or anything in here?”

“Hm? Oh, um, I should have them in the back. Let me just fetch one.” Rarity strode into the backroom with a confused look on her face.

“Okay, when Rarity comes out, you put that cloak on. I gotta run back to my place. Be back in a minute,” Rainbow said, bolting out of the store, leaving a faint rainbow trail behind.

Okay, okay... Twilight thought. When Rainbow Dash gets back, I have to tell her my feelings. This could be my last chance. While they were gone, Sweetie Belle came downstairs and asked if Spike would like to go play with the Cutie Mark Crusaders, Spike agreed and they left together. Meanwhile, Rarity came back out with the cloak, and Soarin’ went into the backroom to put it on. Twilight slowly worked up the courage to say exactly what she felt, whatever that may be. “Rarity?” she asked.

“Yes, dear?” responded Rarity, who was busy dusting the boutique.

“Can I, uh...” Twilight stammered. “Can I ask for some advice? Just friend to friend?”

“Of course, dear. What would you like advice about?” asked Rarity.

“Well, this is just hypothetical, but what if, uhm, I had feelings slightly, um, stronger than friendship for somepony? What, um, what should I do about it? This is all hypothetical, mind you.”

Rarity smiled at her. “Well, for one, I wouldn’t keep it bottled up for too long. I’d try to get it out in the open. If this certain pony rejects you, whatever you do, don’t lie to them. Be honest and hope for the best. If they still deny you, then it’s their loss. You are a wonderful pony, Twilight. Don’t let anypony tell you otherwise.”

Twilight sighed and smiled. “Thanks, Rarity. Remember, this is all hypothetical. I wouldn’t want any of you girls think I was biased towards one of y—” Twilight stuffed a hoof in her mouth before she could complete the sentence. She looked at Rarity to see if she had been listening closely enough, but she just smiled back at Twilight.

A couple minutes later, Soarin’ and Rainbow Dash stood next to each other by the door. Rainbow Dash wore a Daring Do hat and green button up t-shirt, a wild grin etched on her face, and Soarin’ had a cloak, with a confused look on his face.. “Introducing... Wait, I need a drumroll. Really? No drums? Whatever. Introducing... Daring Do and Manehatten Silver!”

Damn, Rainbow Dash sure looks good in that hat... Twilight’s imagination began to run wild. No! thought Twilight, forcing herself to look down. I can’t fantasize right now. I... I need to tell her how I feel. Twilight gulped and slowly raised her head, resting her eyes on Dash. “R-Rainbow Dash?”

“Yeah, Twi?” asked Rainbow, looking over to Twilight.

Twilight’s breathing quickened and her face flushed. She could feel her heart pounding furiously against her chest. She closed her eyes. “I...” Twilight sighed and opened her eyes. She couldn’t ruin Rainbow Dash’s day. Rainbow finally had a chance at happiness. Twilight couldn’t interfere with that. “Have a good time in Canterlot... We can finish our discussion later at the library...” With that, Twilight slowly walked out of Carousel Boutique, her head hung low. While Rainbow Dash was busy chatting with Soarin’ about Wonderbolt related stuff, Rarity watched Twilight leave, her eyes widening slightly.

Twilight shut the library door behind her and walked into the main room of the library. The Daring Do book remained where Rainbow Dash left it, open on the desk. Twilight levitated a bookmark over to it and closed it over the bookmark to prevent any damage. With that done, Twilight sighed and sat down. She levitated the book she had been reading over to her and began reading. She needed to distract herself.

Not ten pages later, Twilight heard the soft creak of the front door opening. She spun around to see Rarity standing in the doorway. “Rarity?” Twilight asked, eyebrow raised.

“Umm... Hello, dear,” Rarity said hesitantly. “I figured you might, um, be lonely with Rainbow Dash gone to Canterlot for the day. I know this was one of your reading days.” She laughed awkwardly.

“No, I’m fine,” lied Twilight. “This book is really... interesting.”

“...Maybe I could read something? I do tend to enjoy a good romance novel,” Rarity said, walking in and looking around.

“Oh! I certainly wouldn’t stop you from reading. The romance novels are over there,” said Twilight, pointing to a far off section of the library.

“Thank you.” Rarity quickly cantered over to the romance novels section and promptly returned. She sat down at the desk Rainbow usually sat at, glancing down at the Daring Do novel as she did so. “So, you and Rainbow sit here and read together every Saturday?” asked Rarity.

    “Yes,” replied Twilight.

“And do you ever do anything else? Go out to lunch or something?” While speaking, Rarity glanced between the Daring Do book and Twilight.

“Well, sometimes we go out to lunch or to get milkshakes,” said Twilight, staring into space and smiling fondly at the memories.

“And does it ever turn into... anything more?” asked Rarity, eyes focused on Twilight

A noticeable red tinge appeared on Twilight’s face and her voice rose slightly. “Umm... like what?”

“I... I’m just going to come right out and say it. I saw the way you were looking at Rainbow Dash earlier.”

Twilight’s book slammed shut. “Oops... I... What?”

“Dear, it’s not hard to see. You were downright ogling her in that Daring Do outfit. And the way you walked out... I’m so sorry...” Rarity put a hoof on Twilight’s shoulder.

Twilight shrugged it off. “I-I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t have any extra feelings for Rainbow Dash.”

“Come now, dear. You don’t have to deny it. You practically admitted it when you asked for advice earlier.” Rarity smiled invitingly at Twilight.

“Bu-But that was hypothetical. That wasn’t real!” Twilight stood up.

“Wasn’t it? We’re alone here. Spike won’t be coming back for a few hours. He went off to play with Sweetie Belle and the other crusaders. You’re alone and among friends.” Rarity stood up as well.

“But... But you just walked in earlier when I was alone! We aren’t private here!” Twilight backed away, accidently knocking over the chair she had been sitting in.

“Then why don’t we go upstairs? We’d be alone up there. And you can even put the closed sign up and lock the door.” Rarity began to make her way to the stairs.

“Wait!” yelled Twilight, stamping her hoof. “Why are you even doing this? I didn’t ask for your relationship advice!”

Rarity gazed sadly at Twilight. “...Dear... I couldn’t bear to see a friend so sad. It was obvious you were crushed when Rainbow Dash came out of the backroom with Soarin’, all giggly and happy.”

Twilight sighed and looked down. “I... I messed up, Rarity. I should have realized...”

“Come now, dear. Why don’t we talk about it over a nice cup of hot cocoa? I’ll get the door and the hot cocoa, you just make yourself comfortable upstairs. I’ll be up in a minute.” Twilight smiled and went upstairs while Rarity went about preparing the hot cocoa.

Rainbow Dash and Soarin’ arrived in Canterlot shortly after leaving. They landed a little outside and chose to walk in, as they figured they might be more noticed if they flew in. Rainbow Dash donned the Daring Do hat and shirt, while Soarin’ continued to wear the cloak. Rarity had told them exactly where to go to get the emeralds. All they needed to do was give them an order confirmation letter from Rarity, get the shipment, and fly back to Ponyville. No paparazzi, no suggestive pictures; just a smooth, clean job.

They walked side-by-side as they entered through the gates, unchecked, as the guard pony was being rather lax about security. And he had good reason to. It had been months since any form of attack against the rule of the princesses. There weren’t even any rumors about any rebellions. Everypony was enjoying a time of peace while they could. And with no major crises happening, the magazines had nothing better to report on than the daily lives of celebrities.

The pair walked in silence through the residential district, passing by houses large and small, apartment complexes, and even a couple of small shops. They passed ponies coming back from their daily errands in the market, their saddlebags loaded with goods. While the streets were near deserted when the two entered the city, as they approached the market, the streets became much livelier.

The pair was just entering the market square when Soarin’ lightly nudged Rainbow Dash. “What is it?” asked Rainbow.

Soarin’ kept looking straight ahead. “There’s a pony staring at us. I think she may have noticed,” he said quietly.

“What, where?” asked Rainbow Dash, glancing quickly around.

“Wait! Don’t make eye contact!” Too late. Rainbow Dash locked eyes with the pony. The pony stared at her for a second before running off down a side street. “Great! Now our cover is blown for sure!” exclaimed Soarin’, annoyed.

“H-Hey! You didn’t actually tell me not to look at her!” Rainbow Dash turned to glare at Soarin’.

    “I thought it was obvious.”

“I’m not famous like you! I’m not used to having to avoid the paparazzi” pleaded Rainbow Dash.

Soarin’ sighed and smiled at her. “Whatever. It’s no big deal. She was probably just excited that she saw two celebrities. Well, one celebrity and one not-so-celebrity.” He smirked at Rainbow.

“Yeah, but just so you know, I’m the celebrity,” mocked Rainbow Dash. Soarin’ laughed, and then they continued in a peaceful silence.

The two pegasi continued for a short while, past all of the shops filled to the brim with ponies gathering their goods for the week to come.

“Hey, is this our street?” asked Rainbow Dash, glancing down a side street that was almost deserted. There were a couple market stands, but the owners were asleep.

“Yeah, I think so,” replied Soarin’. Rainbow Dash turned down the street just as Soarin’ raised a hoof in warning. “Be careful! You never know who might be waiting.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, I gotcha.” Rainbow Dash brushed off his warning, walking down the street without looking.

Soarin’ looked around suspiciously before following her. “The warehouse is down here, right?”

“Yeah,” replied Rainbow, just as they passed the market stands.

Suddenly, Rainbow heard a chair shift slightly. She looked back to see if the market stand owners had woken up, when she found them both staring at her with cameras in their hooves.

“It’s a trap! Run!” cried Rainbow Dash, bolting into the air as fast as she could. Soarin’ quickly followed, leaving the paparazzi in the dust.

“I guess it all started just after I got Rainbow Dash into reading Daring Do...” said Twilight, sipping her hot cocoa. She was wrapped up in a fluffy blanket, nice and warm. Rarity sat opposite her on the bed. The shades were drawn. “She used to come by every once in a while and take me into a side room. She’d quietly ask for the next Daring Do book and I’d give it to her. I guess she was still getting over the fact that she actually liked reading...” Twilight smiled down into her mug.

“That certainly sounds like her,” said Rarity.

“Yeah. And every time she’d do it, I’d tell her how silly she was being. I guess it sunk in, because eventually she was asking me right in the open. That’s how it worked for a while. I’d just be the librarian, not the friend. She’d come to me for the book only, and she’d leave after she got it.”

“That sounds painful, dear. I’m sorry,” Rarity said gently. She patted Twilight on the shoulder.

“It wasn’t at the time.” Twilight took another sip of her cocoa. “I hadn’t thought much of it. In my mind, I was just helping out a friend in need.”

    “What changed?” asked Rarity.

“Well, one day, Rainbow Dash returned after reading the last edition of Daring Do that was released at the time. She was just gonna leave in a huff, but I convinced her to stay while I got some other books for her to try out. She decided to stay while she read them, in case she didn’t like them. Well, it turns out she liked them, but she didn’t leave. She must have been too engrossed. Eventually, I got hungry and asked if she’d like to get lunch with me.”

“I assume just as friends?” asked Rarity, shifting to get more comfortable.

“Yes, of course. I hadn’t recognized my feelings at that point. While we were eating, I suggested that we do this every Saturday. You should have seen the sparkle in her eyes when she agreed... It was magical.” Twilight’s eyes lit up as she recalled that day. “Rainbow decided to stay for the rest of the day and read, and while she was there, I couldn’t stop staring. Every time she looked at me, I found myself blushing. I had no idea why! After she left, I went through just about every book I had on any sort of ailments, but I couldn’t find anything on the subject.”

“How did you find out, then?” Rarity took another sip of her cocoa.

“Well, when Berry Punch moved away, she gave the library a bunch of romance novels, and she gave Rainbow Dash her Daring Do costume. Anyway, at that point I’d already read every book in the library, so I took it upon myself to read the romance novels, a genre I had never ventured into before. Needless to say, I started reading exact descriptions of what I felt when I was with Rainbow Dash.”

“Oh dear, that must have been awkward to realize you had feelings for Rainbow Dash.” Rarity looked sympathetically at Twilight.

Twilight took another sip of her cocoa, sighing as the warmth flowed throughout her body. “Yeah, it was. The next few reading days we had were really hard. I couldn’t even look at her without blushing like crazy. I stammered constantly and kept finding myself going to the other room to cool off.”

“It had to have gotten better, right? You two seem marvelous when you’re together.”

Twilight smiled. “Yeah, it definitely got better. Now I can at least talk to her without thinking too hard about it. Whenever it gets bad, I distract myself with whatever we’re talking about. I focus as hard as I can on the subject until the feeling passes.”

“But now you’ve waited too long and she might be with Soarin’ now,” said Rarity, knowingly.

“Yeah, and what I said to her earlier doesn’t help either...” Twilight’s lip quivered.

    “What did you say?”

“Well, Rainbow Dash was just getting to the end of the latest Daring Do novel, and when Daring Do and her male love interest, Manehatten Silver, kissed, Rainbow got upset about it. In her mind, Daring Do was saving herself for Rosetta, a female professor at a college. I... I tried to convince her that there was no evidence of any sort of romantic relationship between the two, but she wouldn’t listen. I may have pushed her away... Even convinced her to move on and find somepony else to occupy her time.”

“But... I can’t let that happen,” said Twilight. “She makes my day—no, my week. I spend all week looking forward to the few hours we get to spend together on the weekend. Whenever she’s around, I feel happy. Like we could do anything together. Whenever I’m nervous or scared, she’s right there to help me feel better. And when she isn’t there, her face drives me. She pushes me to be the best I can be, and more. She makes me. I... I can’t let her be taken by some hotshot Wonderbolt!”

“Oh dear... You really have it bad, don’t you? I can’t let a friend suffer like this. I’ll tell you what; I’ll help in any way I can to get you Rainbow Dash.”

A smile started to break out on Twilight’s face at the thought of actually getting Rainbow Dash back from Soarin’.

Rainbow Dash and Soarin’ quickly rose to the rooftops. Rainbow Dash kept flying higher and farther away, but Soarin called to her. “Wait! We don’t want to go too far away! We could lose our street!”

Rainbow Dash flew back down to him. “What else are we gonna do?!” she exclaimed, waving her forelegs around.

“I don’t know! We can’t let them get any pictures of our faces, in any case,” said Soarin’. He flew around trying to find a hiding place. Rainbow Dash glanced around for a hiding place as well. What she saw made her stomach drop.

“They’ve got pegasi! Run!” Pegasi were coming out of most of the side streets in the market district, all with cameras in their hooves. Rainbow Dash and Soarin’ dove into a nearby alleyway at top speed, the paparazzi in hot pursuit. They snaked their way through the city, turning left, right, left again, and then right. This brought them upon a dead-end, where a paparazzi lay in wait for them.

“Turn around!” yelled Rainbow Dash, covering her face with the Daring Do hat. They quickly doubled back, flying up and out of the alley. A few pegasi followed them, surrounding them on all sides. They were boxed in. “Come on, follow me!” ordered Rainbow Dash, diving down as fast as she could. She quickly slowed as she neared building level. She spotted an open window in an apartment building. Soarin’ tailing behind, Rainbow Dash flew through the window and into a living room.

“Hey, don’t get up,” Rainbow said to the pony sitting on the couch. She left the living room, flew through the dining room, and from there into a kitchen. “Smells delicious,” she told the pony cooking lunch. In the kitchen, Dash spotted an open door leading onto a balcony. “Lunch’s ready,” she told the rest of the family sitting on the balcony. Rainbow Dash leapt off the balcony, spreading her wings as she did so, Soarin’ following closely behind. Sadly, her little shortcut didn’t help. The paparazzi were still hot on their trail. “Geez, they must have an army!” shouted Rainbow Dash. “Listen! I’ve got a plan! Help me get two of them alone!” commanded Rainbow.

Rainbow Dash flew up to one of them and stuck her tongue out, provoking her. The paparazzi fell for it, snapping a picture of Rainbow and following her down into an alley. Soarin’ followed closely behind with a paparazzi of his own. “What’s the plan, Rainbow Dash?” he asked.

A few minutes later, two ponies dressed as Daring Do and Manehatten Silver flew out of the alley, prompting every paparazzi to chase them. Unbeknownst to the paparazzi, Rainbow Dash and Soarin’ flew out of a nearby alley, unclothed. They soon found a rooftop garden to hide in. As soon as they got in, they heard a few pegasi past very quickly. Rainbow panted lightly. “Who knew paparazzi were so fast...”

“I know,” replied Soarin’. “A few have even given me a run for my money. If only their destiny wasn’t photography.”

“Really? I guess chasing ponies around all day does get them a nice workout. Maybe I’ll try it some time,” said Rainbow Dash, holding up her hooves as if holding a camera. “Click.”

Soarin’ laughed lightly. “Heh, you’d make a good paparazzi pony. Anyway, hopefully they won’t be so bad tonight. That’d make a bad first date.”

“Yeah, I can imagine. I can’t think of how embarrassed my date would be... She’d probably freak out and teleport home...”

    “She?”

“Never mind, it’s not important,” Rainbow said quietly, averting her eyes from Soarin’. “Anyway, why did you ask Spitfire out?” she asked, looking at him.

Soarin’ rubbed the back of his head and smiled. “Well, I’m not getting any younger, and she was there, so, you know...” Soarin’ laughed awkwardly.

“Wait, wait, wait, you only asked her out because she was there?! That’s not why you should ask a pony out!” yelled Rainbow Dash, stamping a hoof down.

“Okay, okay. Maybe there was more than that. I don’t know! It was a spur of the moment thing! We’d just completed a big show, and I’d been thinking about trying to settle down, and everypony in the stadium was cheering, so in the heat of the moment I asked her! Simple. Nothing more to it.”

“Ugh, fine. I don’t want to hear about it anymore. Ponies that toy with other ponies’ hearts just make me sick. You’re not on my bad side yet, but unless you want to be, stop acting like you don’t care about Spitfire. Let’s just get to the warehouse and get the emeralds. I just want to go home.” Rainbow Dash turned and flew off, leaving Soarin’ speechless. “I need to tell somepony something...” she whispered under her breath.

“Hey! Wait!” called Soarin’, flying after her. Unnoticed behind them, more paparazzi followed quietly, while two others flew back down to street level, zigzagging through the alleys and streets.

Twilight opened the shades and window, letting light and fresh air flood into the bedroom. “Rarity, are you sure about this? I mean, I could just let it go and grow old, maybe find somepony else? Why make it awkward for Rainbow Dash?”

“Dear, you made it very evident how strongly you feel for Rainbow Dash. You can’t just give up,” said Rarity, who was getting ready to go downstairs.

“You’re right, but do we have to do it today? I-I’m not prepared...” Twilight’s gaze fell to the ground, where it focused hard on the floorboards.

“Come on, dear, I’m off to make the reservations at Trotellini’s. Why don’t you go get the flowers?”

“Wait, we’re doing this now? Shouldn’t I read up on the subject more?”

Rarity sighed. “Trust me, dear. It will be fine. Just trust your instincts.”

    “But—“

“No buts. Come on, Twilight, I’ll walk you to the flower shop. It’s on my way.” Rarity began to walk down the stairs. Twilight hesitated for a moment before following.

“Wait up!” Twilight called, falling into stride next to Rarity. “You know I want to do this. I do. But what if she says no? What will I do then?” asked Twilight as they walked out the door and into Ponyville. Twilight instinctively locked the door with her magic.

“I’ll do everything in my power to help you, Twilight. If after the massive effort and courage you put forth, she says no, then you move on. She doesn’t deserve you.”

“Thanks, Rarity. I’m probably just acting crazy again...” said Twilight.

“Oh, you are not!” exclaimed Rarity. “Is this the first time you’ve felt this way?”

Twilight’s immediately flushed a deep crimson and she looked the other way. “Umm... I-I guess so... I mean, I know I haven’t felt this way about another pony before...”

“Then it’s perfectly natural for you to be nervous! In fact, with the way you described her to me, I’d be surprised if you weren’t nervous. She means the world to you, and you don’t want to ruin that by making things awkward. I understand.”

“But if she does say no, then things really will get awkward. Our reading days will be ruined, a-and I’ll have to move away to get away from the awkwardness, and then—“

Twilight was interrupted by Rarity shushing her. “Dear, you know things won’t work out that way. Worst case, things are awkward for a few months. Trust me... I-I may have some experience in the subject...”

“Um, with who?” asked Twilight, eyebrow raised.

It was Rarity’s turn to blush furiously. “Oh, you know... You and Rainbow Dash have your reading days, and, um, Fluttershy and I have our spa days. Naturally I became interested in her, with us having so much in common...”

“What happened? You two seem fine now.”

“Well, it turns out she didn’t feel the same...” Rarity eyes revealed a long-lasting sadness etched within. She blinked it away, but Twilight swore she saw her eyes watering. “For a while, our spa days were canceled. I didn’t even go back there for weeks. Fluttershy was too embarrassed to talk to me for a long time. Eventually, I worked up the courage to go talk to her again. I... I’m so ashamed of myself, Twilight...”

“Why? What did you say to her?” Twilight stared worryingly at her friend.

“I-I told her the feelings I had weren’t real. That they were just some petty attraction and that I never actually thought of her in a way so strong as that... I lied to her, Twilight. I lied to the pony I love!”

“Lo-love? Um... How strong is your love, if you don’t mind me asking?” asked Twilight, her voice quivering.

Rarity stared into the distance, lost in a daydream. “Yes, love. I love the way she squeaks when she’s nervous, and I love the way she can keep up with me about fashion. I love the way she sticks up for her friends when they’re being pushed around. And don’t even get me started on her beauty. She is so, so, so beautiful, I get goosebumps when I even consider making a dress for her. I love her more than I love fashion. I love her. She makes me so happy when I’m around her...”

Love. The word stuck itself in Twilight’s mind, and the more she thought about it, the more everything made sense. The way Rarity described her love for Fluttershy. The pure heart and truth behind the words caused something to click in Twilight’s mind. She felt just as strongly about Rainbow Dash.

“Thank you, Rarity. You helped me realize something.” Twilight smiled at Rarity.

“What is it, dear?” asked Rarity, her voice still shaking a little from her confession.

“I love Rainbow Dash. I love her more than anything in the world. You helped me realize that. I always thought it was just a silly feeling I had.” Twilight giggled as she said it out loud. She didn’t know why she giggled. It ought to have terrified her.

“I thought... The way you described her earlier... You didn’t realize you loved her?” asked a bewildered Rarity.

Twilight had to fight back giggles to speak. “I just thought I wanted her to be my best friend, as opposed to my ordinary friend. The thought of being romantically involved never occurred to me. I didn’t realize the gravity of the situation.”

“But,” Rarity stammered. “But what about Soarin’? You were so worried that he would take Rainbow Dash away from you.”

“I just thought that she would start spending all her time with him, instead of with me. Our reading days would stop as her Saturdays became unavailable.”

“But... You know what? I give up.” Rarity let out a single laugh. “You seem happy enough with your conclusion. Wait! What about the romance novels? You said they described exactly what you felt,” proposed Rarity.

“I just thought that it was the kind of love I have for all of you girls, just a little stronger than ordinary friendship. You know, like a best friend. A companion to share in experiences. A partner in crime, if you will. I had no idea that’s what romantic love felt like. Romance was never a motivation of mine, or so I thought. Thanks again!”

“You’re welcome,” deadpanned a defeated Rarity. Suddenly, they arrived at Trotellini’s. “Oh dear... It seems we passed the flower shop. I just got too caught up in our conversation... Thank you for listening, Twilight. I don’t think I’ve ever told anyone that before.”

“No problem. I really enjoyed this conversation, Rarity. I don’t think we spend enough time together. Anyway, I’ll meet you back at the Boutique. I still need to get the flowers. See you there,” said Twilight, hugging Rarity and turning away with a wide grin plastered on her face.

Rainbow Dash and Soarin’ walked through the alleys and streets, slowly making their way toward the warehouse. The two passed an assortment of dumpsters and trash cans littering the back alleys. They were walking on the ground because they would be spotted easier in the sky.

“Why won’t you talk to me?” asked Soarin’, noting the silence between them.

“Because I have a lot on my mind. Also,” said Rainbow Dash, reeling her mind for a good excuse other than that. “The way you throw around Spitfire’s feelings so easily is awful!” she exclaimed, stretching the truth. She wasn’t that mad at him.

“I... I know how that feels. It hurts, I know,” mumbled Soarin’. “I didn’t just ask Spitfire out for no reason! I’d been considering it for a while, and we get along great together. She knows just as well as I do that we’re just testing this, seeing if it will work. So just lay off, will you? I wouldn’t be going through all this trouble to get a fancy suit if I didn’t care.”

“Fine, but why did you act like you didn’t care earlier?” asked Rainbow Dash, following up and glaring at him.

“Well, because—“ Before he could finish that thought, they heard a trash can shift close behind them. They immediately dove behind a dumpster, out of the way of a potential paparazzi. Rainbow Dash slowly peeked up over the edge of the dumpster. She quickly pulled her head back down.

    “It’s another paparazzi,” she whispered.

“Crap,” whispered Soarin’. “What now? We don’t have our costumes anymore, thanks to your great idea,” he said, his voice laced with sarcasm.

“What else was I supposed to do?”

“Oh, I don’t know, we could have out flown them. We are two of the fastest ponies in Equestria, after all.”

“But we tried that, and it didn’t work,” Rainbow Dash reminded Soarin’.

“Whatever. How do you propose we get out of this, huh? We can’t fly away.”

Rainbow Dash smirked. “Like this,” she boasted. She waited until the paparazzi was turned away before quickly jumping up and grabbing an empty can from the dumpster. “Okay, the moment you hear this clank, fly to the rooftops,” Rainbow Dash told Soarin’. She counted to three and threw the can directly at the paparazzi. The moment it struck home, the paparazzi grunted and the two flew as quick as they could onto the rooftop to their left. “Phew, we made it,” said Rainbow Dash.

“I guess that was a pretty good idea, Dash,” said Soarin’, patting Rainbow on the back.

    “Yeah, I guess it was.”

“Sorry for acting so mean back there. I’m just tired and stressed about tonight, you know?”

“Yeah. Let’s get going. We don’t want you to be late for your date, do we?” And with that, they ran across the rooftops, hopping over the gaps with ease. With no paparazzi following them, they actually started to enjoy it. The pair playfully raced across the rooftops, sometimes having Rainbow Dash in the lead, and sometimes having Soarin’ in the lead. They laughed the whole way, letting the tensions of the day slide off. By the time they got to the warehouse, they were positively ecstatic.

“Now that,” Rainbow panted, “Was fun!” she exclaimed, continuing to pant.

“Yeah, yeah it was. I don’t think I’ve had that much fun since that day we got to hang out with you after the Best Young Flyers competition.” Soarin’ grinned at her, and then they hoof bumped.

They looked around to make sure no paparazzi were around, and then they hopped down to street level and looked upon the warehouse. A small sign read, Emeralds Extraordinary! They walked into the industrial warehouse. There were stacks of crates all around, all full of emeralds. A bunch of ponies in safety helmets walked around with clipboards, checking off crates as unicorns loaded them into large metal shipping containers. There seemed to be an office raised above the warehouse floor, which they assumed was the foreman’s office.

“Is that the foreman’s office?” Rainbow Dash asked one of the unicorns lifting crates.

“Yeah,” he grunted, barely paying her any attention.

“Fine,” she huffed in response. Her and Soarin’ flew up to the office and knocked.

“Come in,” they heard a male voice reply. Rainbow Dash opened the door and they walked in. It was a small office with a bunch of filing cabinets off to one side, and a desk in the center, laden with the foreman’s personal materials and some paperwork.

“Um, hi,” said Rainbow Dash, still standing in the doorway. “We’re, um, we’re here to pick up an emerald shipment for Rarity at Carousel Boutique in Ponyville. She said her shipment was delayed.”

“Yes, I understand. Do you have the order confirmation?” he asked, eyebrow rising.

“Uhm. I didn’t know we needed one... Rarity didn’t give us one,” said Rainbow Dash, furrowing her eyebrows as she made sure Rarity didn’t say anything about it. Her stomach clenched when she remembered. “Oh no! I left it in my costume!” she exclaimed.

“I’m just kidding ya. Somepony came by earlier dressed like an explorer with a confirmation letter. You can go pick up the shipment downstairs. Tell them it’s for Rarity,” he said, smiling kindly at them.

Rainbow Dash let out a sigh of relief at that. But why did the paparazzi give them the confirmation letter? “Thanks,” she said and turned to leave.

“Hey, you’re Soarin’ of the Wonderbolts, right? Can I get your autograph? My daughter’s a huge fan.” The foreman turned a picture of his family around, showing him, his wife, and his daughter at a Wonderbolts show.

“Sure,” said Soarin’, smiling at him. “Rainbow Dash, why don’t you go get the emeralds? I’ll only be a minute.”

“Okay,” Rainbow Dash replied. She turned and flew down to the warehouse floor and looked for somepony who liked like they might be in charge. While they were in the office, it seemed everypony stopped working. “Hm, must be on their lunch break,” reasoned Rainbow Dash. She found one pony still checking boxes in the back. “Hey, do you have a box for Rarity?” asked Rainbow Dash.

“Oh yes, right here,” replied the pony, pointing to a small chest of emeralds. Rainbow went to go pick them up when she heard the door to the foreman’s office shut.

She looked up to see if Soarin’ had come out, but he wasn’t there. “Soarin’?” she called. No response. Suddenly, a ton of ponies started filing in from the loading bays, all with cameras. “Oh no...” muttered Rainbow Dash. “Soarin’!” she shouted. Flashes began to sprout from the sea of paparazzi as Rainbow flew up to the office. “Open up,” she yelled, slamming a hoof on the door.

“Rainbow, run!” she heard Soarin’ call. “I can deal with the paparazzi, but you don’t need your reputation ruined!”

“No. I’m not leaving without you!” Rainbow Dash turned around and bucked as hard as she could at the door, but it wouldn’t budge. “Fine,” she said. Rainbow flew back as far as she could facing the door, and just as she began to fly back towards it, she saw flashes coming from inside the office, prompting her to fly harder. As she neared, she shifted so her back legs were ahead, and then she flew into the door as fast as the small warehouse would allow. Crash! The door came down in a flurry of dust and wood splinters. The dislodged door smacked right into the paparazzi, who were standing in the center and had backed Soarin’ up against the filing cabinets.

“I told you I wasn’t leaving without you,” said Rainbow Dash, walking up and stomping on the camera. “Now, we need to get out of here fast. Their entire army is waiting downstairs for us. Soarin’, how fast is your hyper precision flying?” Rainbow asked.

“Pretty fast, I suppose. What’s your plan?” he asked.

“Just follow my lead.” With that, Rainbow Dash bolted out of the office. She flew in super tight circles all around the warehouse, much too fast for the paparazzi to keep up with. Soarin’ quickly joined her, further confusing the paparazzi. Rainbow Dash spotted an open spot next to one of the stacks of emerald crates, and in a split second it was tumbling over, spilling emeralds all over the paparazzi. She then began flying in close and stealing all of the cameras and depositing them in the now-empty emerald crate. Once enough chaos had been caused, Rainbow grabbed the chest of Rarity’s emeralds and flew out of one of the loading bays, Soarin’ once again following closely behind. The paparazzi attempted to chase them, but in the disarray they couldn’t keep up with Soarin’ and Rainbow Dash.

Soon they were back on the outskirts of Canterlot. They flew down and landed, Rainbow setting the crate down. “We made it!” cried Rainbow Dash, tackling Soarin’ to the ground in a hug.

“Yeah, we did,” he said, laughing underneath her.

“I can’t believe we fell for that trap! I thought we were doomed back there. When I saw the flashes from the office, I knew I needed to get you out of there pronto.”

“It’s okay now. We made it, thanks to you,” said Soarin’. Suddenly, without warning, he leaned up and kissed Rainbow Dash.

Her eyes grew wide and she pushed away, frantically getting off of him, blushing hard. “Uh, Soarin’... I don’t feel that way about you... I already dedicated myself to somepony. I’m not gonna betray them,” she said, standing a fair distance away.

“Oh, um...” Soarin’ mumbled, standing up. “Sorry about that. Heat of the moment, you know? Uh... Don’t tell Spitfire about that, please? I really didn’t mean it.”

“No, I won’t. In fact, let’s just never mention it again, hm?” Rainbow asked.

“Uh... Yeah, that works,” he agreed. An uncomfortable silence between them, they flew off back to Ponyville, Rarity’s chest of emeralds in Rainbow’s hooves.

Twilight sat on the purple couch in the main room of the Carousel Boutique, with the bouquet in her hooves. Rarity was busy in the back preparing a dress for her. Twilight picked a single flower from the bouquet and levitated the rest behind the couch. Her heart was pounding furiously against her chest as she waited for Rainbow Dash to return. “She loves me, she loves me not,” said Twilight, picking the petals off the flower with her magic as she did so.

Rarity walked out of the back, levitating a beautiful dress behind her. “Oh dear, don’t do that, it will only make the wait harder,” she said, seeing what Twilight was doing.

“But what if she says no?” said Twilight. She laughed darkly. “And I thought it was hard confessing to her before. This is pretty much torture.”

“But what about back in front of Trotellini’s? You seemed so happy at your realization.”

“That was just the euphoria of realizing my feelings. It’s worn off now, though...” Twilight accidentally tore all the remaining petals off the flower at once. She sighed and put it into the trash can.

Rarity set down the dress carefully and sat next to Twilight on the couch. “Listen dear, I already told you this before, but I’ll tell you again. If she still says no after all the trouble you went through, after all the courage and bravery you put forth, then she doesn’t deserve you.” Rarity put a sympathetic hoof on Twilight’s shoulder.

“But you didn’t move on from Fluttershy. You still love her.”

Rarity’s gaze fell. “Dear, that’s... that’s different...” She looked Twilight in the eye. “Tell me something, Twilight.”

    “What?”

“Don’t lie to her. I can’t let you hurt as much as I do. If she says no, find a different way to remain friends. Promise me that, Twilight.” Rarity strengthened her grip on Twilight’s shoulder.

“I promise, Rarity. But what would I do to stay friends if she says no?”

“Well, everypony is different. Rainbow Dash is different than Fluttershy. I don’t know what will work with Rainbow Dash, so we’ll just have to see. Remember, dear, you can always come to me for any advice should you need any.”

Twilight smiled at her. “Thanks, Rarity.”

“And don’t be afraid to be yourself and it will work itself out. Now, um, I was actually supposed to be working on Soarin’s suit while he was gone, and I didn’t. So I’m afraid I must go now. I’ll see if I have time to talk to you before they get back.” Twilight’s lips curled into a small smile as Rarity walked back into the backroom, leaving Twilight alone with her thoughts once again. She went over the plan again in her head, thinking about any possible thing that could go wrong. But the plan was too simple. It wasn’t complicated enough to have any flaws, apart from Rainbow Dash saying no.

Twilight was very antsy, constantly looking up at the clock. Her heart continued its endless trampling of her chest. She tried to distract herself with anything she could in the room, be it Rarity’s mannequins or her fabrics. Twilight looked back at the clock, to see only a minute had passed. “Ugh, what am I going to do?! The wait is killing me!” she exclaimed, flailing her hooves around, and then settling back down into a slump. “I don’t really have a choice... This is where she’ll come back to, so this is where I have to be.”

Suddenly, the door opened and Twilight’s heart leapt. “Rainbow Dash?” she asked hopefully.

“Oh, um, were you expecting Rainbow Dash?” asked a very timid voice. It was Fluttershy’s.

“Oh, hey, Fluttershy. No, it’s okay. Rainbow will be coming by later.” Twilight leaned settled back down onto the sofa. She hadn’t realized she was leaning forward.

“Oh, okay. Is Rarity here?” asked Fluttershy, glancing around. “I, um... I need to talk to her. I just got back from another class about being assertive. Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as with Iron Will,” Fluttershy added, seeing Twilight’s worried face. “This class teaches much healthier techniques.”

“That’s nice, Fluttershy. I’m glad to see you’re working on it. Rarity’s in the back working on a client’s suit,” Twilight told her. Fluttershy thanked her and walked into the back. A couple minutes later, Fluttershy trotted out, a wide smile on her face. As soon as she left, Rarity walked out, her eyes wide and a huge grin on her face.

“Twilight?” asked Rarity in a slightly high voice. “I think you can definitely ask Rainbow Dash on a date.”

    “Why’s that?” asked Twilight.

    “Fluttershy just asked me out.”

Twilight’s jaw dropped. “Really?! I’m so happy for you!” exclaimed Twilight. “She said she had just gotten back from an assertiveness class, so she was probably feeling confident...”

“Yes, she did mention her class. She said that she really did have feelings for me all along, but she was just too nervous to pursue them. She said that her class taught her this week that if you want something with all your heart, if you desire it with all your being, you should not only pursue it, but work your very hardest to achieve it. I guess she realized I was that thing she desired.

“We have a date tomorrow night. She’s cooking me dinner at her place... If I can find happiness, so can you Twilight. You just have to believe in yourself.” Rarity smiled warmly at Twilight. “Tell you what, dear. You must be suffering out here. Why don’t you come back and help me out?”

“Really? Of course! I kind of am suffering...” And so, Twilight assisted Rarity in the backroom. Although it turns out Rarity didn’t need much help with the actual dressmaking, so she had Twilight organize her materials, a task she’d been meaning to do for a while. Twilight was able to focus her whole mind on it, so any thoughts of Rainbow Dash were wiped away. Before they knew it, an hour had passed, and Rainbow and Soarin’ were due back any minute.

“Why don’t we go out there, dear?” asked Rarity. Twilight agreed and they walked into the main room together. No sooner had they walked out, than the front door opened. Rainbow Dash flew in, a chest in her hooves. Soarin’ followed closely behind her. “I’ll take those, Rainbow,” offered Rarity, levitating the emeralds from her grasp. “Thank you for the help, you two. Soarin’, can you come in the back with me? I... Um... I need to do some final measurements on your suit,” she lied. Rarity winked at Twilight and led Soarin’ away.

Silence reigned between the two for an awkward few seconds. “I,” they both said at the same time.

“You first,” said Rainbow Dash, her wings ruffling.

“Um... Ra-Rainbow? I, uh... I saw what you were like with Soarin’, and, um...” Twilight’s face was flushing the deepest red it had all day. All of the feelings of the past few months, of the realizations of that day, and of the possibility of failure, of Rainbow Dash saying no, all came flooding back to her in an overwhelming sea of doubt and uncertainty. It all rested on this one decision. Those three words that could change the course of history, that could bend rulers and kings to their will. And here Twilight was, about to say those three powerful words. With no certainty of whether or not they’d be accepted. “I can’t do this.” Twilight turned and teleported away.

Rainbow Dash stood there dumbstruck. Twilight had just run away. Why? Without a second thought, Rainbow flew to the place Twilight would most likely run to. The library.

Rainbow landed softly just outside the giant tree that housed the library. She tried the doorknob, but it was locked. She heard sobbing from inside. She slammed her hoof lightly on the door. “Twilight. Let me in. Please?” plead Rainbow Dash. When no response came, she flew up to Twilight’s bedroom window. To her luck, it was wide open. Rainbow Dash flew in, looking around for any sign of Twilight. She heard more faint sobbing from downstairs. When Rainbow went down, she found a sad sight. The desk that she usually read at was knocked over, and Twilight lay crying in its place. Rainbow walked over and kneeled down next to her, putting a hoof on her shoulder. “Twilight, what’s wrong? You can talk to me.”

Twilight shrugged her hoof off and turned away. “No, I can’t. You’d just think of me as a freak.”

“Twilight, trust me. I won’t think of you as a freak no matter what. I will never, never think of you as anything but my awesome little egghead, all right? You can talk to me.”

“It’s just...” Twilight let out a sob. She looked up at Rainbow Dash with watery eyes. “When... When I saw you with Soarin’, so happy and giggly, I thought... I thought he had asked you on a date. That made me feel so hurt, I just had to get away. And then I talked to Rarity and revealed things to her. Things I had never told anypony. I had thought I just wanted you to be my best friend, but I realized something. I realized—” Twilight was interrupted by Rainbow’s lips falling upon hers.

It felt like the best thing in the world to Twilight. The soft lips brushing against hers, Twilight closed her eyes and wrapped her forelegs around Rainbow Dash’s back, pulling her tighter. Rainbow, who was still standing, fell over against Twilight. Twilight rolled over onto Rainbow Dash, who then rolled over onto Twilight. Twilight felt a certain book under her, and she teleported it upstairs for later.

Finally, with Twilight on top, she pulled away. “I realized I loved you,” she breathed.

Rainbow Dash’s eyes watered up at that, and she pulled a similarly conditioned Twilight into a watery, messy, sloppy kiss.

“Hey, Twilight? What’s this hoof written bit in the back?” asked Rainbow Dash, who had just finished the latest Daring Do book. They were sitting in Twilight’s bedroom on the same night.

“It’s a surprise. Go on, read it,” said Twilight, who was putting clean sheets on the bed.

“Did you write it?” she asked, beginning to read it.

“Yes, while you were asleep after we, um.” Twilight cleared her throat. Rainbow Dash smiled as she continued to read, her smile steadily growing as she did so, and then she tackled Twilight onto the freshly made bed in a flurry of kisses. Rainbow Dash and Twilight soon lay together on the bed, the Daring Do book long forgotten.

“Hey, Rarity is probably wondering where we are. We had this whole date planned for you and I,” said Twilight, snuggling up against Rainbow.

“Oh yeah? What was it?” asked Rainbow Dash, hugging her close.

“I had this special dress that Rarity made for me and I had a bouquet of flowers to give to you... We even had reservations at Trotellini’s.” Twilight kissed Rainbow Dash’s chest.

“What? That place is like, crazy expensive!”

“Anything for you,” giggled Twilight. They cuddled for a few more moments in silence, enjoying the warmth of each other’s body. Suddenly, Twilight spoke up. “Hey, that reservation at Trotellini’s is only a few minutes from now. Since I figured you might want to take a break after flying all the way to Canterlot and back, we scheduled it later. Do you want to go?”

“What? On a date? With the town egghead, Twilight Sparkle? Hmm... I’d have to think about it... How about yes? Is that a valid answer?” Twilight giggled, and then, happy as can be, the two of them walked out of the library, a pegasus’ wing draped over a very pleased unicorn.

  2. New chapter:

Rainbow Dash stared with wide eyes at the pony standing in the cave entrance high above Canterlot before darting over to her.

“Twilight!” exclaimed Rainbow Dash, tackling her to the ground in a hug. After a moment’s embrace, Rainbow stood up and extended a hoof to help Twilight as well. Twilight stared at it for a moment, then grasped it, and Rainbow pulled her to her hooves. “You know, I was worried about you. What the heck were you doing up here anyway?”

Twilight stared blankly at her. “Uh... Rainbow Dash?”

Rainbow Dash raised an eyebrow. “Uh, yeah. It’s me. It’s Rainbow Dash.”

Twilight seemed to hesitate before responding. “Oh, uh... Yeah.” Twilight looked past Rainbow. “And... Spike.”

Spike had been standing awkwardly a few feet away. He grinned at Twilight seeing him and ran towards her, his eyes watering up the whole way. “Twilight!” He wrapped his arms around her and squeezed tightly. She merely stared down at him, and then awkwardly hugged him back.

Rainbow Dash let them hug for a moment, but she couldn’t help but notice that Twilight seemed spaced out. “Hey, Twilight, are you okay? You seem... I don’t know... out of it.”

Twilight detached Spike and levitated him away. “No, I’m fine... I think I’m just a little tired.”

Rainbow Dash smiled at her. “Trust me, I feel ya. You wanna stay in Canterlot for the night? Or do you just wanna catch a late train home?”

Twilight looked out over the bright city lights for a few seconds, taking in the spectacle of the city as the shops began to close for the night and the dots of light from the warm homes of many ponies began to go out, signaling the end of another beautiful late autumn day. She sighed. “Well, I guess we should head... home,” said Twilight. “Everypony else would get worried.”

“Yeah... Let’s head down to the train station. Maybe you can tell me what happened on the way back.” They walked in relative silence back down the tall mountain, and even as they walked through the city streets, Twilight remained quiet. She gazed uneasily around at all of the buildings that made up her hometown as if she had never seen them before. Finally, they arrived at the train station, and not a moment too soon, for the train was about to leave. The trio quickly paid for their tickets and hurried on board. Greeted by the welcoming warmth of the interior, they soon found an empty cabin.

They settled down with Spike on one seat and Rainbow Dash and Twilight next to each other, across from him. As Rainbow sank back into the comfy seat, she yawned. Her eyes suddenly felt heavy.

“What were you doing up there, Twilight?” asked Spike.

“Oh... Uh...” said Twilight in a tone of uncertainty. She looked around nervously.

Rainbow Dash yawned again. “Look, Spike, I know you want to know what happened, and so do I, but I think it can wait until morning. It’s been a long day, after all. Right, Twilight?”

    “...Yeah.”

Rainbow Dash looked at Twilight and saw a hint of fright in her eyes.

“Hey, you don’t have to worry about what happened ever again. Besides, if this happens again, you know I’ll find you. Always,” Rainbow Dash said softly.

But the fear in Twilight’s eyes didn’t go away, although it did ease a little. She sighed and turned away to look out the window. Rainbow Dash looked across the cabin and found Spike curled up and asleep. Her eyes began to droop again, and she let out a large yawn. Rainbow closed her eyes and let the soothing sound and feeling of the train rolling through Equestria lull her into a deep sleep.

Twilight awoke with a start, the memories of other-Twilight easing their way back into her mind. A deep darkness had enveloped the room in her sleep. She blinked. Once. Twice. Still, a darkness covered the room. “Okay, okay... A spell that stole all of my memories of it just hijacked my body, and now I’m trapped inside my mind... Inside my mind?!” Twilight frantically turned her head this way and that, but the blackness remained. “First things first, light,” she said.

A simple spell later, the torches were relit. Glancing around, she found that the cave still had its one mirror and a door. The other door leading back through the cave seemed to have been locked as well.

“Maybe if I can get back out into the forest, I can get out of here. Although, this cave seemed to be her base of operations...” Still, Twilight tried again to open the door. But, once again, nothing worked. “Okay, that didn’t work... I’ll just have to see what I can do from here,” Twilight said, looking around.

In the dimly lit cave, there didn’t seem to be anything of use. As with the exit door, the side door heldfast as well; the mirror seemed to just be an ordinary mirror. But other-Twilight walked straight out of it, so maybe there is something peculiar about it... thought Twilight. A glow of her horn later, she was scanning it for any sort of enchantment. When no results surfaced, Twilight gave an exasperated sigh and leaned back against the mirror.

Twilight’s stomach lurched as she fell back into nothingness.

Twilight found herself on a train with Spike sitting across from her. “...Yeah,” she found herself saying. She tried to scream out, to yell out, anything. But nothing happened. Twilight settled back into the seat, once again not of her volition. Rainbow Dash seemed to be sitting next to her.

Rainbow turned and looked at Twilight, worry in her eyes. “Hey, you don’t have to worry about what happened ever again,” said Rainbow. “Besides, if this happens again, you know I’ll find you. Always.”

It was clear now that Twilight was looking through other-Twilight’s eyes. Through her own body’s eyes... other-Twilight sighed and turned to look out the window. Unbeknownst to Rainbow Dash, she smiled wickedly.

“I see you found the mirror,” Twilight heard in her mind. She figured it must have been other-Twilight. “Of course, I wouldn’t expect less from Princess Celestia’s own personal protege,” mocked other-Twilight.

    “H-hey!”

“Hey, what? You know, since I’m in control now, I might have a little fun." Twilight saw other-Twilight give a playful smile through the reflection in the window.

    “Like what kind of fun?”

“Well, Rainbow Dash did come all the way out to Canterlot to save you...”

“R-Rainbow Dash?” If Twilight could control her body, she would have felt a slight red tint come across her face.

“Well, your mind is really quite boring, so I spent most of my time looking through your eyes—which, I might add, is also boring. The only thing that I actually liked were your interactions with Rainbow Dash. And now that I have control, and Rainbow Dash is here...”

“Y-you wouldn’t!” Not that. Not with Rainbow Dash.

“Oh, I would! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go. This pathetic little body of yours is already tired.”

“No, wai—” Too late, Twilight was thrown out of the mirror, where she landed roughly on the hard floor. She groaned as she attempted to stand, only to stumble and fall against the wall, where she was met with a dull pain in her shoulder. Twilight rubbed it sorely.

Suddenly, a small stream of white light passed through the entrance to the cave. It made its way across the room, towards the second door. Twilight could hear voices emanating from it. Voices of her friends, of Rainbow Dash’s bullies, and of Rainbow Dash herself. The voices vanished as the smoky stream went right through the second door.

Twilight curiously made her way to the door. She put her ear up against it and listened hard, but to no avail. She still couldn’t hear them.

Twilight’s body tensed up as feelings of the pleasant warmth of her library, followed by the biting cold of Cloudsdale came over her body. She looked down to find another white stream floating through her. Twilight quickly backed away from the door and out of their path.

“Okay, so these are voices I’ve recently heard and feelings I’ve recently felt. Memories. That must be what they are. Short-term memories being converted to long-term memories...” As another one passed by, Twilight tried to grab hold of it with her magic, but nothing happened. it kept floating onwards to the second door. “And based on my experiences earlier with that door, I can only guess that it holds long-term memories. Hmm... Maybe if I can somehow get into that door, I can get my stolen memories back and learn about the spell more...”

Twilight took a deep breath, calming herself, steadying herself. She was going to get that door open, whether it wanted to or not. She crouched down and closed her eyes. Twilight soon found the familiar sense of power, of infinite possibilities rising up to her horn. With every ounce of her being, she focused on one thing, and one thing only. Getting that door open. All of her previous attempts had failed, but she was determined this one wouldn’t.

Beads of sweat started to form on Twilight’s forehead as she gathered all of the arcane energy she could get into her horn. She grunted as the sweat dripped down her face. Finally, she unleashed the gathered energy upon the door.

    Nothing happened.

“Ugh!” Twilight yelled, stamping the ground in frustration. “I just want that stupid door to open!” Click. The door unlocked. “What?” She carefully went to investigate the door. Twilight cautiously tapped a hoof on the door. A clanging noise reverberated throughout the cave. Other than that, nothing unusual happened. “Hm... Maybe this is like a lucid dream. Maybe I can control things with my mind...” Twilight turned to face the wall and closed her eyes, concentrating on a soft bed. And lo and behold, one appeared. “Ha! It worked!” The white sheets looked ever so comfortable in comparison to the rest of the cave... “No. No, I have to get out of here and stop my spell.”

Twilight turned back to the now unlocked door, which still had a constant stream of memories floating into it. She walked up to it, her heart beating feverishly against her chest. Twilight reached out her hoof to the door, and noticed that it was shaking. She closed her eyes, her breath held. And then Twilight swung open the door. She stood still, expecting something, anything to happen. Nothing did.

Twilight opened her eyes to see what was wrong. What she found was a blinding white light encasing her. She fell over as the light overwhelmed her.

Rainbow Dash blearily opened her eyes, taking in her surroundings. A pale light shone through the window. “Wh-where am I?” she mumbled, shifting a little and getting more comfortable on the soft pillow she was leaning on.

“On a train, in a train station,” replied Twilight. Rainbow looked around and found that the soft pillow was actually Twilight’s shoulder. She quickly sat up, her face flushing a tiny bit. “The Ponyville train station, in fact. Come on, we need to go. Spike already went ahead to get a bed ready for you. You’re in no condition to fly back to your house tonight.”

“How did he go ahead? Didn’t we just get here?” Rainbow was sure he had fallen asleep soon after they got on.

    “Simple. I teleported him back.”

Rainbow Dash’s weary mind took a moment to process that. “...Teleported him...? Wait, teleported him?” she asked, raising an eyebrow. “You always said it was too dangerous to teleport other ponies long distances alone.”

Twilight hesitated for a moment, before replying. “Oh, I was just, uh... feeling extra confident tonight?”

“...Okay. I’m too tired to argue right now,” Dash replied, yawning. “Tomorrow you’ll tell me what happened, right?”

    “...Right.”

They heard the conductor open the carriage next to them, then shut it. They stood up just as he opened theirs. “Come on, we gotta schedule to keep here,” he said, gruffly.

The pair walked back through the car and out into the chilly night air. Rainbow noticed Twilight shiver as they walked through the station. They continued to walk through the cold on their way to the library. Twilight’s teeth chattered for a moment. You know what? Twilight’s been through a lot today. She doesn’t need to be cold. “H-hey. Come here.”

    Twilight raised an eyebrow.

“You’re cold, right? Come here,” Rainbow Dash said, lifting a wing.

“Thanks,” said Twilight, snuggling up nice and close to Dash, who wrapped her wing around Twilight. They walked in silence in the clear night, the moon shining down upon them. Other ponies were likely in their house, under a nice warm blanket or in front of a roaring fire, but Rainbow wouldn’t have given this moment up for the world. She blinked as she realized this fact. It wasn’t just because Twilight was a friend, Rainbow couldn’t have felt this with any other pony. It was special because it was with Twilight.

    Rainbow Dash smiled.

They were soon approaching the library, Twilight still snuggled next to Dash. Smoke rose out of the chimney, and through the window flickered an orange light. As they neared the door, Twilight opened it with her magic. The moment they walked in, Rainbow Dash was enveloped in the warmth of the fire. They continued on into the living room, where the fire was burning brightly. Spike sat by it, snoring gently. Twilight silently shushed her and they continued on up the stairs and into Twilight’s room. Once the door was shut, Twilight said, “Okay, you can talk now. It’s pretty soundproof up here.”

Rainbow Dash suddenly realized her wing was still wrapped around Twilight, and she quickly retracted it and stepped away a little. “Heh, sorry about that. I didn’t realize.”

Twilight smiled. “It’s okay. You were nice and warm.”

Rainbow’s face flushed. “U-Uh... Yeah, thanks. I... Thanks...” Why am I blushing? I was just keeping her warm is all.

Twilight giggled and poked Dash on the nose. “All right, we should probably both get some sleep. The guest bedroom is down the hall on the right, and I assume you know where the bathroom is.”

“Oh... Yeah, I guess I’ll head down there now...” Rainbow Dash made for the door, but was stopped by Twilight’s voice.

    “Rainbow Dash?”

    “Y-Yeah?” asked Dash, turning around.

    “Thanks for rescuing me.”

“No problem.” Rainbow Dash smiled and walked out and down the hall. Once behind the closed door of the guest room, she sighed and fell against it. What am I feeling about Twilight?

  3. New chapter.

Rainbow Dash sighed as the purple balloon drifted below the cloud cover and out of sight. Twilight would have loved all of the cool stuff in the suburban part of town... she thought. Rainbow looked back at her friends, all standing there chatting and laughing. She smiled at the sight of it. Her mood lifted and Dash felt ready to resume showing them around.

She showed them the large market, which Applejack enjoyed seeing; the dance club, which Pinkie Pie had a fit about; and a multitude of other things. From the park to the neighborhood where Rainbow grew up to even the neighborhood where Fluttershy grew up. Rainbow Dash even showed them the flight camp she had attended when she was younger.

The tour lasted well into the afternoon, and the orange glows of the sun were beginning their descent below the horizon. Night would be coming on, and Twilight still hadn’t returned.

They stopped at a local diner in order to discuss their plan. Rainbow Dash knew that it would end in her and Fluttershy being tasked to carry them down, so she ordered a coffee to help keep her going. It had been a long day, after all.

Because of the oncoming night, they couldn’t stay for long. The conversation was constantly interrupted by having to look out the window to see how much time they had left.

Rainbow gulped down the last of her coffee and chewed the end of her sandwich, then walked over to the counter, where the owner was cleaning a glass. He was a gruff, but nice looking pony with a smooth white coat and a slightly darker mane. He looked very focused on his task.

Rainbow Dash grabbed a few bits out of her saddlebag and placed them on the counter. They shined brightly in the setting sun. It hadn’t gotten his attention. “Hey, thanks for the food,” she said in a slightly raised voice.

The pony looked up from his work with an eyebrow raised. He realized that she had paid him and his features brightened a little. He gave a welcoming smile. “No problem.”

Rainbow Dash looked around the joint, then back at the owner, who had resumed cleaning the glass. “How long has this been around? I used to live here and I don’t remember it.”

The owner looked up again. “Oh, just a couple years. Here, I got a newspaper clipping from the day we opened.” His voice became more excited as he talked about the newspaper.  “We got front page! Although some other story got the real headline...” He flew to the top of the cabinets that were above the counter and grabbed a framed newspaper. He brought it back down and placed it facing Dash. Among other stories was the one of the diner opening. It was hidden away in the corner of the paper. The picture of the main article caught her eye, as it was of a flight team. Rainbow read the headline and her eyes widened and stomach dropped. It was about a flight team shutting down.

The same team her mother used to be on.

Rainbow Dash looked the owner right in the eye. “Can I have this newspaper?”

“Heh. That came outta left field,” he replied. “First off, no, but you can look at while you’re here. And two, why do you need it in the first place?”

“No, it’s fine. Maybe some other time. Oh, and I just was interested in that flight team. Anyway, I think we should go now.” Rainbow Dash went and grabbed her friends, then hurried out, much to their protest. Rainbow’s mind had gone right back into searching mode. After so many long nights and early mornings it used to be second nature to her. Now it was just confusing...

Twilight rolled around, stretching and grasping with her hooves to try and find a warm blanket. Upon not finding one, she grabbed the next best thing. A pony that was apparently lying next to her. Twilight felt the pony’s body, and found it to be the roughly the same size as hers. A mare. What had happened the night before? She had imagined it would smell of recent rain, still fresh from the clouds, but when she breathed in deeply, she smelled only a musty, earthy scent, akin to the ground. As she felt around some more, Twilight found the body she was next to was very rough, full of large scars. Confused, she opened her eyes to see who this mysterious pony was.

A rock. She was cuddling with a rock.

Twilight stood bolt up, glancing around quickly as memories came flooding back to her. Trees. She was in a forest. Twilight got her magic at the ready. There was a clearing a short distance away, which she could see through the trees. After glancing around to make sure no one was watching, Twilight began walking towards it, her hoofsteps light and quiet.

Now standing in the middle of the clearing, Twilight slowly looked around. The trees were gangly and the grass grey. A crow cawed in the distance. The clouds covering the sky gave the forest an evil shadow. There was a tall mountain a small ways away.

Twilight didn’t recognize this place, yet it felt familiar. It wasn’t in Equestria, at least nowhere she had been before. “Okay, okay, okay...” Twilight said, looking hurriedly around. “First things first, I need to find out where I am.” After looking in every direction around her, she groaned in frustration. “How am I gonna find out where I am if I can’t see over these stupid trees!” It was at that moment when an idea sparked in her head. “Yeah, that should work!” She ran over to the tallest tree around and teleported to the top.

Nothing. No civilisation anywhere. “Oh no, oh no, oh no. If I can’t see anything anywhere, how can I find my way back? And better yet, what the heck happened with my horn? I need to take more precautions against horn hijacking. I didn’t even know that was a thing... It never came up in my studies.” Twilight teleported back down to the ground and went back to the middle of the clearing. “Okay, the only thing for miles around is that mountain... I suppose that’s my best bet. Maybe there’s something on the other side...” And with that, Twilight set off. She constantly looked over her shoulder, as she always had the feeling she was followed. Or at the very least, watched...

“And plus, maybe whoever took control of my horn is there...”

“Rainbow? Equestria to Rainbow Dash!” Rainbow Dash looked ahead and found there to be nothing but open air. She turned around and saw her friends standing at the edge of the cloud a little ways away, and she quickly flew back to them.

“What happened?” Rainbow asked, coming to a landing in front of them.

“We don’t know, Rainbow,” said Applejack. “We were just walking, and when we came to the edge of the cloud, you kept going.”

“Oh, uh... Sorry about that,” said Rainbow, blushing in embarrassment a little. She hoped it wasn’t too noticeable. “I just kinda got lost in my thoughts is all.”

“Well that’s unlike you, Rainbow Dash. Are you alright? You’ve been acting mighty strange ever since we came to Cloudsdale.”

    “Uh... Well, you see—”

“Look, everypony,” interrupted Fluttershy. “I’m sure Rainbow Dash has a good reason for acting like this. I mean, this is her hometown, after all. Maybe she remembered something bad.”

Fluttershy was the only among the group that knew about Rainbow Dash’s past. Even though they had been friends for the longest time, it still surprised Rainbow when Fluttershy stood up for her like that.

“Thanks, Fluttershy,” said Rainbow Dash, smiling.

“Yeah, thanks, Fluttershy,” said Applejack. “I guess I did get a little carried away. Sorry, Rainbow, but tell me if somethin’ is the matter, okay? Anyway, the sun’s fading. Let’s get going.” Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy grabbed Applejack under the shoulders and carefully lifted her off the cloud. Applejack peered uneasily at the ground, gulped, and didn’t look down again until Rainbow and Fluttershy had safely deposited her on the ground.

Rainbow Dash’s arms felt much relief after setting Applejack down. And when she looked up at Pinkie Pie, she huffed in despair and flew back up to get her.

As usual, Pinkie was excited to do anything with her friends, and she was positively bouncing at the thought of their current activity. In fact, they almost dropped her in one of her ecstatic outbursts. After that, though, she settled down until they reached the ground.

Finally, it was over, and Rainbow Dash bid everyone adew. Fluttershy went to Rarity’s to check up on her and to find out about Twilight, and the other two went back to their houses. Rainbow didn’t go home though, she still had to go to the library to see where Twilight went.

The bookworm must have slept in, Rainbow thought.

Rainbow’s wings ached and her eyes were heavy, but she pushed onward.

Twilight gratefully sat down under the shade of a large tree. She was panting heavily, and her hooves were on fire and her throat was parched. The sun seemed to have not moved from its place at the top of the sky. Although the late autumn weather wasn’t hot, the exercise had certainly taken its toll on Twilight’s stamina.

When she finally stood up to continue walking, Twilight listened for any sort of water nearby. “Ugh, where am I gonna find water in this place?” she grumbled, setting off again. As if on cue, she heard the welcoming sound of a small creek. Her ears immediately perked up, and Twilight quickly began to follow the sound.

She was soon welcomed by the pleasant sight of a cool stream rolling through the forest. The water gently slid over the rocks, and down the stream it swept around a fallen, moss-covered log. Twilight smiled at it. It was the first truly peaceful thing she had seen since she had been taken there. She stepped up to the edge and stuck her face in, cooling herself off and greedily drinking.

After a few large gulps of water, Twilight came up for air. Her mane dripping into the creek below, she panted lightly. Soon she was satisfied and content. At least, as content as she could be with the situation at hoof.

Twilight’s hooves were still aching, so she went up to the edge and sat on her haunches, and ripples got sent downstream as she dipped her back legs in.

How didn’t I notice this stream before? thought Twilight. It’s quiet enough in this forest, I’m pretty sure I would have heard it from a long way off... Hm, perhaps the trees dampened the noise more than I thought. Maybe I’ll come back here and do more research after this is over.

With her hooves sufficiently soothed, Twilight stood up and continued back into the grim-looking forest, leaving the forest stream behind.

Rainbow Dash was looking in the window of the library when something flew by it. She peered in, and found that Spike was frantically pacing around the library. He would occasionally look behind something or throw something out of the way, then he would groan in frustration and continue his endless pace. Rainbow Dash raised an eyebrow and tapped on the glass. Spike didn’t notice, so she tapped again, louder this time. That time, Spike pulled his head out of the cupboard he was going through and looked to the window. He noticed Rainbow Dash hovering outside and hurried to open the window.

“Rainbow Dash?” he asked, getting the window open. He noticeably shivered as the cold night air assaulted his senses. “What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be in Cloudsdale today?

“Yeah, I was. Twilight said that she was gonna go home and take a quick nap, but she never came back. Is she here?” Rainbow flew through the opening and got a better look at the library than before. And the sight she saw was not a pretty one. The place was a complete pigsty of books and other things scattered seemingly at random. Spike shut the window and went back to looking everywhere he could think of.

“No!” Spike exclaimed, waving his arms around. “She came back here and started going through some old diaries. She said something about seeing a sonic rainboom before. She didn’t mention taking a nap.”

“Huh, she didn’t mention it to me... Anyway, where is she now?”

“Well, I was getting bored so I got up to get a drink, and when I got back, she was gone! The only thing wrong was that the bedside table got knocked over. The books were still open on her bed and everything!”

“Slow down, slow down.” Rainbow Dash took a moment to parse what he was saying. After a second, her eyes widened. “So you’re saying she’s missing? Come on! Let’s get looking!” Rainbow Dash flew up the stairs to Twilight’s bedroom, with Spike trailing close behind. The upstairs was just as much of a mess as the downstairs. Rainbow began looking around, but Spike stopped her.

“Wait, I already looked through the entire library! She isn’t here.”

Rainbow Dash stared at him in disbelief. “Then what were you doing when I got here?”

Spike rubbed the back of his head and guiltily laughed. “Panicking.”

“Ugh, fine. Well, I don’t know...” Rainbow Dash looked around the room again, noticing things she hadn’t before. The books weren’t a clutter like downstairs. Instead, they were in a neat pile next to the bed, and there was one book sitting open in the center of the bed. Rainbow flew over to that to see what entry Twilight had been reading. In the back of her mind, Dash had expected it, but it still took her by surprise. The entry was from the day of her original sonic rainboom.

Twilight stepped out of the trees and looked up. Above her lay a tall mountain. It was the only noticeable inclination for as far as she had seen, and it was too rocky for trees to grow on it, so it was bare and out of place in the center of a forest. It rose up at a very high angle, and it was easily too steep to walk up. There was a scraggly path leading up at a gentle angle around the mountain, so, seeing no other options, Twilight began to climb it.

As soon as she set a hoof on the path, a deep rumbling began vibrating the path. Twilight looked up to see a large rock barreling down the cliffside. She quickly leapt for safety. It smashed into the path just in front of her and shattered into small pieces, evoking dust into the air, causing her to have a fit of coughing. Twilight sat for a few seconds, until finally the coughing died down enough to allow her to take a few deep breaths. Twilight gulped and peered uneasily up the mountain. She stepped forward cautiously, continuing to look up, while only looking down to leap over the hole in the trail. After a few feet, no more rocks had come down, so Twilight looked ahead and listened harder for falling rocks than before.

The trail was unsteady and full of loose rocks. Some mere pebbles and some head-sized. More than once she had to quickly pull her hoof back as a rock gave way under her and began to tumble.

Eventually, Twilight got up high enough to take a good look over the forest. And what she saw made her stomach drop.

For as far as she could see, the forest continued. No large gaps. No towns. Nothing.

Then Twilight heard something. A voice crying for help, and it came from higher up the mountain.

“Hello?” Twilight called, looking up the cliffside.

“Is someone down there?!” a female voice called back. “Come help me! I’m in a cave up in the mountain!”

“O-okay! I’ll be there soon!” Twilight set off again, with more vigour this time.

Rainbow Dash’s heart pounded against her chest as she read through the journal. She was surprised to find out that that was the day that Twilight had gotten into Princess Celestia’s school. At one point Rainbow laughed.

“Rainbow Dash? What’s so funny?” asked Spike.

“Oh, nothing.” Rainbow continued to smirk. She had just read that her sonic rainboom had made Twilight more powerful. When she got to the end, Dash felt a small warmth creep to her cheeks with the knowledge that her rainboom had caused all of that.

“Rainbow Dash?” asked Spike, looking at her funnily. Rainbow jumped back, quickly shutting the book and trying to hide her blush. “Did you find anything?” continued Spike.

“Oh, uh...” Rainbow Dash’s mind reeled for an answer, and her eyes were looking everywhere except directly at Spike. “I-I, uh... You were born on the same day as my rainboom,” she blurted out.

Spike raised an eyebrow. “Okay then... So, nothing about Twilight?”

Rainbow’s breathing slowly started to calm. She breathed a sigh of relief that Spike didn’t notice anything. “Not exactly, no. So, Spike, did Twilight ever... I don’t know, act suspicious? Anytime recently?”

    “W-well, no, not recently.”

“Not recently? Look, Spike, if it can help us find her, you should probably tell me.”

Spike rubbed the back of his head. “Well, uh... This has been bothering me for a while now, and, uh. A f-few years ago, I followed Twilight up the mountain behind Canterlot, because I was worried about her, you see?” Spike began looking around, as if Twilight would pop out and catch him red-handed.

“And?” Rainbow Dash sat down at the edge of the bed, and Spike hopped up next to her.

“Well, uh, she went into a cave and lit some candles. Then she opened a book and started reading it. A few seconds later, she lit her horn and said something I couldn’t hear. She repeated it a few more times, then... uh, she blacked out.”

“She blacked out?! Is that normal with unicorn magic?” Rainbow Dash didn’t believe that Twilight could do such dangerous magic when she was so young.

“But wait, here’s where it gets weird.” How can it get weirder? thought Rainbow Dash. Spike continued. “A few seconds after that, Twilight wakes up. But she’s acting kind of strange. Looking around as if she didn’t recognize where she was. I ran in to see if she was okay, you know? And when she looked at me, she didn’t recognize me. S-she asked who I was! I-I was worried I had lost her... And I completely lost it when she passed out again. I-I ran over to her and started shaking her, begging her to wake up! When she did, she had no idea about anything that happened after she cast the spell. She didn’t remember waking up...” Spike looked up at Rainbow Dash with a pained look.

“So, that’s a good story, Spike. I-I’m sorry, I can’t imagine how that would feel...”

“It’s all right, Rainbow. Anyway, after that incident, Twilight would occasionally—mostly while she was studying—stare into space. She would sometimes respond to something when no one talked. Overall, she was acting pretty strange. It stopped a few months later, though. I-I’ve always had this bad feeling after that... A feeling that something bad would happen. She continued to go up to the cave for a while after that, but I was too scared to follow... I even went to Celestia, but you know how she is. She’d prefer to let Twilight solve it on her own...”

“Spike, do you think you could show me where that cave is?”

The craggy path only got worse as Twilight’s trek continued, forcing her to slow back down from her stride. The incline only became greater as well. One time, a rock Twilight had stepped on with her hindleg came loose and plummeted down, causing her to lose her footing with her other hindleg, leaving her hanging on with only her forelegs. The rock that had given out fell for a few seconds, which felt like minutes to Twilight, before shattering on the ground below. She scrambled back up and breathed deeply for a few moments before setting off again.

Eventually it started to even back out, until the path ended and she came upon a small opening in the mountain.

    “Hello?” she called in.

“Yes! I’m in here! Come help! There was a small cave-in, and I’m stuck.”

Twilight gazed uneasily into the cave. It was dark with no torches. With a nervous sigh, she walked in, lighting her horn as she did so. The cave was narrow and not very tall. It was barely tall enough for a pony. And there were times when Twilight had to duck or pull her limbs towards her body as tightly as possible. The ground was full of sharp rocks occasionally jutting up unexpectedly, and the air was full of earthy dust, making it harder to breathe. Although it was even colder inside the cave, Twilight found herself wiping the sweat from her brow even more often.

“Can you hear me?” Twilight called.

“Yes! You sound even closer now!” it replied. Twilight found comfort in the knowledge that her treacherous journey had a solid end point. She dreaded the thought of having to climb back through this and down the mountain, though.

After what felt like ages, the tunnel opened up into a larger room. Twilight continued to stroll forward and ended up with her nose against a large steel door. A weird place for a door... she thought. Bewildered by its appearance, Twilight stood still for a moment, after which she attempted to open it, but found it locked, so she instead tried unlocking it with a spell, which proved unsuccessful. The spell caused the door to clank.

The pony must have heard the door, as she then spoke. “Oh! You’re finally here! I’m right through the door. Quickly, now!” The pony’s voice really did sound close now.

“But it’s locked! I can’t open it.” Twilight sighed in frustration.

“Are you sure? Could you try again?”

“I don’t know what it’ll accomplish, but fine, what the heck.” Twilight turned the knob once more, and, to her surprise, it opened.

Spike blinked in surprise. “Wait, what? Do you think she’s there?”

Rainbow Dash got up and began stretching her muscles. “Well, you’ve already searched here, right? And she’s not the type to just leave without telling anyone.” Rainbow turned to the window, crouched a little, and looked back at Spike. “Hop on, we’re going to Canterlot.”

“Wait, huh? But what if Twilight’s still in Ponyville, then we’ll be too far away to help her!”

“Fine, if she’s not at that cave you talked about, then we’ll just fly back here. I’m fast enough.I just did a sonic rainboom for crying out loud!”

Spike sighed, defeated. “Fine.” He walked over to Rainbow and cautiously crawled on, carefully climbing around her wings, until he was resting uneasily by her neck. “It’s way easier to ride Twilight, you know.”

Rainbow Dash smiled wickedly. “Ha! But I’m more fun.” Without warning, Dash bolted out the window and into the night sky, her hooves stretched out in front of her. Spike screamed, Rainbow laughed, and the wind howled. It was a clear night, the sky devoid of clouds. The moon shone brightly through Equestria.

For a moment, Rainbow Dash’s mind was on nothing but the fun of flying. The cool night air flowing through her mane and the adrenaline pumping through her veins. She swooped and she banked, she pulled up and she dove down, all while moving ever closer to their destination.

Rainbow Dash was brought out of her high by a sharp pain in the small of her neck. She craned her head back and found Spike holding on for dear life, a look of pure terror etched on his face. She slowed her flying to a more reasonable pace and the pain lessened accordingly.

They flew on and on and on, the city lights of Canterlot getting brighter as they neared. Soon they were flying over the last farmers’ fields, where all the farming equipment was packed away for the oncoming winter, and into Canterlot.

Rainbow Dash slowed down to a hover over a small city square, where a festival seemed to be going on. “All right, Spike, where’s the cave?” asked Rainbow, continuing to look down at the festival. A unicorn and a pegasus were sitting at a table outside a small café, and another unicorn was walking to the table holding three drinks. Rainbow Dash’s eyes continued to wander, when suddenly they snapped back. Pink pegasus. Blue mane. No, it can’t be...

Through the door was a large, well-lit room. Twilight stepped inside and glanced around. There was a mirror at the other end, where she saw a reflection of herself, and there was another door leading off from the side. One thing she didn’t see, however, was a cave-in.

“Hello?” Twilight called for what felt like the millionth time that day.

“Hello,” replied her reflection, stepping out of the mirror.

    Twilight’s eyes widened. “W-what?! H-how?” she sputtered.

Her reflection merely pursed her lips and walked forward. Twilight heard the door behind her shut and lock. “Really?” the reflection asked, feigning surprise. “I figured you would remember me. That’s why you created me, after all.”

Twilight racked her brain, but came up with nothing. Twilight got into a defensive position, just in case. “What are you talking about? I can’t create a clone of myself. And I’m pretty sure I’d remember it if I did.” By this point, Twilight had the entire cave memorized in case a fight broke out.

“Oh, Twilight, Twilight, Twilight. I thought you would have figured it out by now, but I guess you’re not as smart as they say, now are you?”

    “Just who are you?”

“I’m you, Twilight.” Just then, other-Twilight opened the other door. Just a crack. But a crack was all that was needed, for Twilight felt a sharp pain bite at her head, and then she blacked out.

“Twilight, dear, you almost burned down the house. No more dangerous magic until Princess Celestia teaches you how to control it better,” said Twilight’s mother.

“But, Mom!” Twilight groaned. “I can only get better at magic by practicing it more! Besides, I knew what I was doing. I stopped it before anything bad happened!”

“No buts, missy. If Cadence hadn’t been there... Oh Celestia, I don’t want to know what could have happened...” Tears came to her mother’s eyes.

“Mom... I-I’m sorry,” said Twilight, her voice quivering and a guilty sadness coming over her. She too started to sob, and she was grabbed by her mother, and held in a tight embrace. An embrace only a mother and her daughter could have.

After a little while, Twilight’s mother leaned down and kissed her daughter’s forehead. “It’s okay, dear. I just don’t like to think about what would happen if... Look, I just don’t want you to get hurt. Pretty soon you’ll be moving to the palace grounds and I won’t see you as often. I want our last days to be happy, not in a hospital.”

Twilight smiled up at her mother. “Okay, Mom. I won’t practice magic I can’t completely handle.”

“Thank you, dear. Now, how about some ice cream?”

Twilight came to for a moment. She glanced wearily around the room, her head aching. She didn’t recognize any of those visions... No, memories.

Other-Twilight smiled evilly down at her. “Enjoying the show? Now, back to sleep, Twilight.”

“Okay, Mom! I’m gonna go study outside now. I’ll see you later!” said Twilight, running out the door.

“Okay, dear!” called her mother from the doorway. “Remember what you said the other day! Be safe!”

Twilight knew what her mother was talking about, but she had the utmost confidence that she could control it. She just needed to be somewhere that couldn’t burn down. And she knew just the place. Twilight had been out looking for it for a few days at that point, and she had finally found it.

Twilight walked through the streets of Canterlot on that sunny morning, not taking any detours. She was a mare on a mission. Soon she left the main city behind and was climbing the mountain behind the city. Twilight had memorized the route, and she was soon high above Canterlot. Finally, she came to the landing and stopped for a breather. The views from this high up were spectacular. The whole of Equestria spread out before her. Twilight could see everything from Cloudsdale to that town with the huge apple orchard... Ponyville? Yeah, Ponyville, she thought.

With her breath caught, Twilight walked into the large cave behind her. Her hoofsteps echoed off the tall cave walls around her.  She lit the torches she had brought and stuck in various cracks in the days before, and now that it was sufficiently lit, she took the spellbook out of her saddlebag. Twilight took a deep breath and opened it to the proper page. It was full of complex incantations and magical theories. But she was there with a specific purpose.

Twilight did a few magical exercises to get her juices flowing. It was going to be a difficult spell. She did what the book said. Focus on her temporal lobes, and bring her magic there, and then repeat the incantation. Simple. Admittedly it was dangerous, but Twilight knew she could do it. She had practiced precision magic on Smartypants before, after all.

Twilight focused all of her magic on her temporal lobes and said the incantation. After a few moments, she repeated it with more vigour. Again, Twilight repeated it. This continued on until, finally, it took effect. The spell was just something to help her remember more things. At least while she was still young. And it had finally worked. Twilight blacked out.

Twilight slowly opened her eyes. other-Twilight was still staring down at her. She hopped up and readied a spell against other-Twilight, but nothing happened. Not even a flicker from her horn.

“I know who you are now. You’re that spell I cast on myself. And I know where we are. We’re inside my head.” Twilight glared at other-Twilight.

“Oh, yes! You finally get it. Of course, I’m not surprised you didn’t remember me. I did steal that memory, after all. Now, come here. I want to have some fun with you.” When Twilight did nothing, other-Twilight snarled angrily at her and she felt a magic aura surround her and force her up.

“How did you steal my memories?” Twilight asked, stalling for time. None of her magic was working. Not even a little.

“Oh, simple. You created me where your memories are stored, so I just took a few. It’s quite boring in here, you know. Nothing to do except go through old and new memories. I took a few useful ones, that’s all.” She smiled innocently.

Twilight continued stalling. This spell seemed to like gloating. “Why did you only start this now? You could have done it anytime.”

“Oh, no I couldn’t have! I didn’t have enough of your magic stored within me to make me powerful enough to take over your horn temporarily. And the reason I’m starting this at all? Well, you see, after only a few short months after you created me, you didn’t need me anymore. I’ve been left inside your mind for years! And now, it’s your turn to be stuck in here.”

Twilight tried to struggle out from her spell’s magical grip, but to no avail.

“Oh, don’t bother with magic. Those memories drained all that you have. Ha! I’ll finally be the one in charge! After all these years! It’s a bad feeling, being stuck in here. All I wanted was to be free. Free to live my own life. But you kept me trapped in here. You acted like I didn’t even exist! Now, it’s my turn.”

“No! You can’t blame me for that! I didn’t even know you had a sentient mind!”

“Well, that doesn’t change the fact that you forgot me and left me to rot!” other-Twilight exclaimed.

“Look, I wouldn’t have done that if I had known. In fact, I probably wouldn’t have even created you.”

“Well you did, and there’s no changing the past...” other-Twilight looked sadly at the ground. Twilight felt the magic grip loosen slightly.

“Now that I know you exist, I can’t just let you be. If we can re-merge our consciousnesses, then we’d both be happy, right?”

other-Twilight looked up again, anger flaring in her eyes. Twilight felt the grip strengthen to an even higher level than it had been. “It’s too late for that now. You made me suffer in here, and now it’s your turn.” Twilight felt a warm glow overcome her body. It felt inviting, like a soft, silky bed... She felt herself falling, and then the light faded from her eyes.

It was at that moment when Spike decided to answer. “Well, uh... I don’t know exactly where the cave is, but we’re pretty close to our old house, so I can probably show you from there.” Rainbow Dash didn’t respond, for she was still staring at the pegasus. “Rainbow Dash?” asked Spike, knocking on her head.

Rainbow blinked a few times, then shook her head. “Oh, uh, yeah, Twilight’s old house... Heh, uh, where is it, exactly?”

“Oh, it’s a couple blocks down that street over there. Twilight and her parents used to love this café down here.”

Rainbow took one last look at the pegasus, then flew down the indicated street. “Okay, and... stop,” said Spike. The house they stopped outside was a moderately-sized, three story building. “Okay, now down this street up here...” Rainbow flew down the street. “Or wait, was it over here?”

Eventually they made it to the outskirts of town, in front of a narrow dirt path leading up the mountainside. “Up here?” Rainbow Dash asked.

Spike’s breathing was shaky. “Uh-huh.” Rainbow Dash started flying up the mountain, parallel to the path. Soon the hustle and bustle of the city was far behind them, and the quiet mountain lay ahead.

The path leveled out onto a landing and a cliff face rose up behind it. “T-the cave was, uh, right over here,” said Spike, hopping off of Rainbow Dash, giving the ground a quick kiss, then scampering over to a giant rock against the wall. “Uh, this wasn’t here before.”

    “So, this is the cave?”

    “Yep, this is it.”

“And... how are we supposed to get in with this giant rock here?” Rainbow Dash peered at the rock, shaping it up.

“Well, as I said, this wasn’t here before. Maybe we should go now? I doubt she’s in there.”

“Come on! Help me move this rock!” Rainbow Dash flew over and grabbed whatever she could of it, and, after a moments hesitation, as did Spike. They pulled and pulled but it wouldn’t budge. “All right, let’s try digging instead! You have claws, so you go ahead.” Spike began to dig, while Rainbow Dash looked for a weak point on the rock. Spike wasn’t making much progress, on account of how rocky the mountain was, and Rainbow wasn’t succeeding in her aspect either.

Rainbow Dash sighed. “Fine, she isn’t here. Let’s go,”

“Rainbow? Are you sure you want to give up that easily? It’s not like you,” replied Spike, climbing out of his small hole.

“Well, your hole is going nowhere, and this stupid rock won’t budge!” exclaimed Rainbow Dash, kicking the rock in frustration. To their surprise, this caused a purple forcefield to emanate from the point where she kicked. They both stared at it, open mouthed. After a moment of silence, Rainbow Dash said: “Well, maybe she is here...”

“...Yeah, maybe you’re right,” replied Spike, equally as stunned.

Just then, the rock was bathed in a purple light. It lifted from the ground and hovered out of the way of the cave. And out of the new opening, a purple unicorn exited.

    “Twilight?”

  4. Wow, that was a good movie... Mind you, I haven't seen it since... When did it come out? May? Yeah, then. Anyway, I saw it at the midnight release, and I was dressed as Nick Fury. I wish I could have enjoyed the final action sequence more, but I had to desperately go to the bathroom.

  5. Okay, first things first, it's an interesting concept. Another thing is that you should always start a new paragraph when a new character speaks. It honestly at times left me guessing as to who was talking. That leads me into my next point, which is that their voices didn't always sound like they were talking. Here's an example of something that Dash said:

"Oh no Shy! You're no where near at fault for any wrong doing!"

I just don't feel like Dash would say that. Also, in that sentence 'no where' should be 'nowhere.' And 'Oh no Shy!' should be 'Oh no, Shy!' Anyway, I feel like Dash would say:

"Oh no, Shy! It's not your fault! Or anypony's fault!

These issues are present throughout the story, but they can be fixed.

Anyway, other than that, there are some pacing issues, and characterization as well. The whole incident just felt like a casual conversation to me. I mean, I know that it was supposed to be emotional, but I just couldn't feel it. Fluttershy might be a bit more anxious about finding those things in the box, and Dash might not admit why she had them so readily.

As I said, the concept is interesting, but we need to be more invested in the situation and the characters need to be more believable. If you had spent more time leading up to Fluttershy... I guess you could say breaking into Dash's house, along with more time foreshadowing Rainbow's suicidal thoughts and Fluttershy's feelings towards Rainbow, it could have been a lot better. Also, was this a romantic story? Because at the end, I couldn't tell if they were saying "I love you" as a friend or as something more. And when it says Fluttershy kissed Rainbow, I couldn't tell if it was on the cheek or on the lips. I'm gonna guess on the lips. Anyway, I'm rambling here.

There were some grammatical issues as well. "Ponys" should be "Ponies." There were a few others, but that stuck out. To me, at least.

Also, why was the box sitting on Dash's bed? Was she planning to use it? I think she would keep it under her bed or in a drawer or something.

Anyway, there's not much more I can say. It is an interesting idea, but it could have been better if you fleshed it out a bit. Also, some of what I said may be biased, because TwiDash is my favorite ship, and I don't find anything else quite as believable. But I tried not to be too biased.

  6. Okay, after reading 9 pages of this thread, I have come to this conclusion: People are misunderstanding what Starswirl the Bearded's intentions were with his spell.

He merely wanted to create a spell that could safely swap peoples' cutie marks. The way I understand it, is that he never learned enough about the relationship two ponies would have had to have for it to swap their cutie marks safely. His intentions were not to become an alicorn. If you actually listen to the incantation, you hear that it is entirely about swapping cutie marks, and nothing more.

The reason that Twilight became a princess was due to a number of factors, all of which Princess Celestia pointed out. Here are some examples.

Since you've come to Ponyville, you've
displayed the charity, compassion, devotion, integrity, optimism, and of
course, the leadership of a true princess.

    And

We are gathered here today in celebration of a momentous occasion. My
most faithful student, Twilight Sparkle, has done many extraordinary
things since she's lived in Ponyville. She even helped reunite me with
my sister, Princess Luna. But today, Twilight Sparkle did something
extraordinary. She created new magic, proving without a doubt that she
is ready to be crowned Equestria's newest princess. Fillies and
gentlecolts, may I present for the very first time, Princess Twilight
    Sparkle!

Just read what she said. It is not the specific spell that she created that matters, it's that she created a spell at all. They were already seriously considering making her a princess, but this was a final test of sorts.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this episode. In fact, I'd say that it's one of my all-time favorites. Definitely the best of Season 3. Behind it in Season 3 are The Wonderbolt Academy and Sleepless in Ponyville. The only real problem I have, is that at the beginning it was a bit jarring having so many different songs back-to-back.

  7.         Twilight is fighting someone from her past she thought would never
betray her. Rainbow Dash is fighting to forget someone from her past
that already did betray her. Neither can win their battle alone. Maybe
            not alone, but together?

I will also post it here in the spoiler, but I would appreciate it if you Favorite/read it FiMFiction.net, as I need the views.

    Prologue

Twilight looked up and down the empty hallways, taking in the sheer brilliance of it all. She could imagine it now, all of the genius she would encounter, all of the high-level mages she would meet. It all seemed so surreal. Just then, the door next to her opened, and a young unicorn walked out, with a look of shame on his face. He hurried away, and his parents soon followed. Twilight’s vision quickly faded back into the harsh reality of things. If she failed the upcoming entrance exam, she wouldn’t be allowed to attend. She wouldn’t be taught by some of the most amazing unicorns around. None of it would happen, all of her dreams would fall apart.

“Okay, you can do this, Twilight,” she muttered. Twilight took a deep breath, preparing herself. The classroom door opened and an older, grumpy looking silver unicorn stuck his head out.

“Are you a Ms. Twilight Sparkle?” he asked, peering down at her.

“Um, yes sir,” said Twilight, meekly.

“Good, the entrance exam is about to begin. Get in here.” The old unicorn walked back inside, then retook his seat with the other judges. Twilight gulped and followed. Inside were her parents sitting off to the side, a few rows of desks in the back, which a few in the highest row sat the judges, and a line of windows in the front. Her brother had tried to be there, but he had his own royal guard classes to attend. Twilight’s parents smiled fondly at her.

“Welcome to Princess Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns,” said one of the judges. “As you know, you are here for the entrance exam. If you fail, you will not be allowed to attend this establishment, and you will not be nurtured into the pony you aspire to be, as stated in your registration papers. Furthermore, your family will get no refunds should you fail this test. Do you understand?” she asked. Twilight gulped and looked at her parents pleadingly, and they smiled in return.

Twilight took a deep breath. “Yes... I understand.”

“Very well,” said the judge. “Then we shall begin.” His horn glowed, and the classroom door creaked open. Time seemed to slow as Twilight watched it open, inch by inch, very slowly. As it slid across the rough floor, Twilight could only imagine what lay on the other side, and whether it be a monster, or a mere logic puzzle, she did not know. What she did know, however, was that her nerves were failing her. Twilight’s breathing quickened and her eyes widened. All of her muscles clenched tight. And finally, after what seemed like an age, the large wooden door was finally open.

Much to Twilight’s surprise, a young earth pony walked in, pushing a small wooden cart with a purple spotted egg. The old cart creaked a little as it came to its resting place next to her. He backed away out of the room. The door shut behind him, much quicker, it seemed, than it had opened.

“Your test is to hatch this dragon egg,” said the judge. “If you succeed, you shall be granted admission into our fine school, and all of the privileges that come with it. Are you ready to begin?”

    Twilight gulped. “Y-yes.”

“Very well, please begin,” said the judge, as they all picked up their clipboards.

All Twilight had to do was hatch a dragon egg. A simple dragon egg. I-I read up on this before, didn’t I? she thought. They usually don’t hatch until they’re super-heated by their mothers, therefore they can stay in their eggs indefinitely. In a unicorn’s case... you have to charge it with a large amount of arcane energy... Twilight couldn’t do that, she had barely ever let off half of the required energy before. And even then it was an accident, Twilight doubted she could recreate it if she tried.

“Well, Ms. Sparkle?” asked a female judge, which immediately reminded Twilight of the outcome if she failed. Twilight laughed hesitantly. The judges wrote something down on their clipboards. Twilight realized that the longer she waited, the worse the judges thought of her, which in turn meant her chances on getting in to the school were quickly diminishing. She closed her eyes and concentrated on getting the energy into the egg. Twilight grunted in exasperation, and then a spark came out. Only a spark; nothing else. She tried again, but not even a spark this time.

“We don’t have all day, Ms. Sparkle,” said the female judge. Twilight’s resolve was quickly dissipating, and she began panicking. She ran around to the other side of the cart and tried again, and once again nothing happened. Twilight tried from all angles, hoping for some sort of miracle, hoping for something to save the day. Time was running out, she was sure they would ask her to give up, she was sure they’d ask her to leave.

Twilight closed her eyes one last time and concentrated. She cleared her mind of everything but the magic she was attempting. She felt the magic welling up inside of her horn, itching to be released. Twilight felt confident in this one, she felt it might work this time. But something was wrong, she felt fear start to creep up her spine.

You can’t win. You’re nothing but a phony, Twilight imagined the judges saying to her. She imagined them laughing her out of the building and telling her to leave Canterlot, because they would convince Princess Celestia to banish her forever.

Twilight attempted to push the thoughts out of her mind, but the damage was done, she couldn’t complete the spell. Twilight put all of her might into finishing it, but merely a few sparks came out. She fell on her face.

Twilight sat back up and sighed. “I’m sorry I wasted your time...” she said. The judges wrote on their clipboards again as Twilight sulked over to the window, to look down at the view she would never experience again. She looked up at the castle and imagined the princess she would never meet. Just then, behind the tall castle spires, a large explosion blasted its way through the midday sky. It was a magnificent display of the entire spectrum of colors. A few seconds later, Twilight heard a loud boom that shook the whole building.

Twilight suddenly felt powerful magic surge through her body, stronger than she had ever felt. It was beginning to overwhelm her; she needed somewhere to release it. Twilight aimed it at the dragon egg, hoping it would be enough. The egg hovered in the air for a moment, then hatched, revealing an adorable purple baby dragon. But it wasn’t enough to stop Twilight’s magic. It couldn’t get out of her horn quick enough and it started leaking downward, into her mind. It quickly took over her body.

Twilight involuntarily lifted the row of judges into the air, with looks of terror mixed with surprise on their faces. Twilight’s magic then turned her parents into a potted plant and a cactus. And then, without anything else to aim at, her magic aimed itself at the newborn dragon. The baby dragon grew to an enormous height, breaking through the ceiling easily.

With no more targets, Twilight’s magic started going even more wild. It began randomly flipping over desks. It shattered the entire front line of windows. It opened and slammed the door, breaking the frame.

Suddenly Twilight felt a hoof on her shoulder. She turned to see who it was and was greeted with the face she least expected to see. Princess Celestia’s. The princess’ loving gaze brought Twilight back to her senses, stopping the outflow of magic.

Twilight’s stomach dropped and fear took over her mind. She imagined what the princess would do to her. First, the princess would lock her in the dungeons. Second, they would lock iron shackles around her horn, so she could never use magic again. Third, after years in the dungeons, they would banish her from Canterlot and even all of Equestria forever.

    “Twilight Sparkle,” said Princess Celestia.

    “Oh, I’m so sorry, I didn’t-”

“You have a very special gift. I don’t think I’ve ever come across a unicorn with your raw abilities,” said the princess. What she said didn’t immediately register in Twilight’s head. Though she didn’t understand completely what the princess had said, she did realize she had to respond, so she said the first word that came to her head.

    “Huh?”

The princess seemed unfazed. “But you need to learn to tame these abilities, through focused study.” Twilight’s mind was now beginning to comprehend what the princess was saying. Once again, she realized she needed to respond.

    “Huh?”

“Twilight Sparkle, I’d like to make you my own personal protégé here at the school.” Twilight understood that, and quickly began to think of a response that truly reflected her feelings.

    “Huh?!”

Twilight looked over at her parents, asking their permission to accept this once in a lifetime offer. They nodded their heads vigorously.

Twilight jumped a few feet in the air. “Yes!” she yelled.

“One more thing, Twilight.” Twilight didn’t understand what was going on. The princess had just made her her personal protégé, right? What more was there to say?

“More?” Twilight asked, as she fell from the air and onto her stomach. The princess indicated toward Twilight’s flanks. She looked around, to see what the princess was pointing at, and sitting there on her flank was her cutie mark.

She had done it. Twilight had finally obtained her cutie mark. And also on the same day had gotten into her dream school and even got to become the princess’s personal protégé.

“My cutie mark!” Twilight began excitedly saying yes and jumping in circles around the princess. Around Princess Celestia. Twilight’s personal teacher. Twilight couldn’t believe it.

The rest of the day passed by in a flurry of congratulations, special treats, and of course, boring paperwork regarding the school. It ended with a magnificent party, after which Twilight was forced to go to bed.

Lying in bed, attempting to calm down after such an eventful day, Twilight realized what had made all of this possible, or at least what she assumed to be the case. She had the rainbow explosion to thank. She decided she should find the pony that caused it, should they still be alive after being likely at the epicenter of it, and personally thank them. Of course she had no idea where to begin, or even if she would have the time, but she told herself she would find them nonetheless. Twilight nodded off to sleep, with dreams of her new life taking over.

    New chapter.

Twilight waited patiently for Rainbow Dash to get back from flying Applejack across the gap. Twilight and her friends were in Cloudsdale to support Rainbow in the Best Young Flyers competition, and while they were quite happy about it, not actually having wings was presenting its problems. For example, Cloudsdale was built by pegasi for pegasi, so naturally there weren’t many flat areas where one could simply walk about. This meant that there were times when those of her friends without wings would need to be flown across wide gaps. This was one of those times.

Twilight took a deep breath, steadying herself, calming herself. She made sure not to look over the edge of the cloud and down the large, empty gap to the hard earth below. Where even the tall hills looked like small bumps scattered about the land. Twilight shivered.

“Hey!” called Rainbow Dash as she neared the edge of the cloud. “You know, I really wish I could’a shown you around more.” Rainbow fluttered above the cloud for moment to steady herself, then landed. “Hey, are you okay?” she asked, eyeing Twilight. “You don’t look as... awesome as usual.”

“Yeah... Heh heh, I’m fine.” Twilight took another deep breath, once again calming herself.

“All right, if you say so. Well, come on then, our friends are waiting.” Rainbow took off and flew in a circle around Twilight, in order to pick her up. Twilight braced herself. She felt hooves underneath her forelegs, grabbing her. Before she knew it she was in the air, with the wind flying through her hair and everything passing by in a slight blur. The very safe cloud Twilight had been standing on was soon behind them, and the Cloudsdale Cloudosseum loomed ahead. Twilight could see her friends waiting on the other side, which momentarily reassured her.

But, as with all good things, it came to an end far before Twilight felt it should. She made the mistake of looking down. She inwardly cursed her curiosity for it. From up there, the ground seemed so far away.  It seemed far enough away that you could just fall for minutes before hitting it. Far more than enough time to realize that your death is upon you, have your life flash before your eyes, say your final goodbyes, and then just wait for the ground to finally arrive, ending your suffering. Twilight imagined it akin to watching a train wreck, seeing the impending fate, but not being able to stop it.

Soon Twilight realized that her eyes were again closed and that her muscles were clenched tight. Rainbow Dash didn’t seem to have noticed. In fact, the other side of the gap didn’t seem very much closer than before. It seemed that the flight was happening agonizingly slowly.

And then Rainbow Dash did something completely unexpected. She swooped. Twilight’s stomach lurched and she screamed. Rainbow seemed to take that as a sign of encouragement, and pulled back up in a tight curve, while banking to the right.

“Rainbow! Please stop! Let me off!” yelled Twilight over the howling wind.

“What? You want to stop now?” said Rainbow, evening them out.

“P-Please,” pleaded Twilight, holding onto Rainbow’s forelegs for dear life.

“All right, I guess.” Soon, the wild ride was finally over. As Rainbow Dash set Twilight down, Twilight immediately ran away from the edge of the cloud. She was in such a hurry, she stumbled and fell, but she quickly stood up and got safely to her friends.

“Hey, Twilight? What happened back there? Did I do something wrong?” asked Rainbow, walking over to her with a slightly hurt look on her face. These feelings were all new to Twilight. Sure, she had read about ponies with a fear of heights, but reading it and then actually feeling it are two completely different sensations. And now, while she was still sorting out her feelings, ponies were asking her about them? There was no way Twilight could answer questions about a subject she was still researching. She didn’t need long. Just a few minutes.

“No! Er, yes. Er, I don’t know!” exclaimed Twilight.

“Look, is there a problem or isn’t there? I gotta know, Twilight!”

“I-I need to think about some things. I’ll talk to you after the competition.” Twilight galloped off into the stands.

Rainbow Dash stood there, dumbfounded. “What just happened?”

“I don’t know,” said Applejack, “but I’ll go talk to her. You gotta go sign up, don’t you? Rarity went on ahead, why don’t you catch up with her.”

“Okay, I guess,” responded Rainbow Dash, uncertainly. Applejack and the rest of her friends walked up to the stands, leaving Rainbow alone. She sighed and then flew off towards the enrollment booth. It was down a long outdoor hallway lined with large puffy white cloud pillars. It wasn’t the first time Rainbow had been down it, nor did she think it would be the last. Cloudsdale never seemed to change all that much, except its position in the sky. That was one of the good things, Rainbow Dash thought. If it didn’t change much, then she wouldn’t have to learn what felt like a new city every few years.

Twilight, however, was the opposite. She was changing every day. Whether it be from her books or her friends, she was always learning something new and changing because of it. But now Rainbow Dash had gone and made Twilight angry. She had made Twilight so upset that she could barely even speak to her.

Being in this city was also digging up painful memories. Memories not easily forgotten. Memories of her mom. She had decided that the perfect day to leave her and her father forever was also the day of an extremely important showcase of Rainbow Dash’s. She left without a trace. No note or anything. Rainbow Dash knew she needed to patch things up quickly with Twilight or else she’ll leave Rainbow as well. Who was she kidding? That line had gotten crossed the moment Rainbow Dash had done that stupid trick.

Lost in her train of thoughts, Rainbow didn’t notice how close she was flying to the cloud pillars. Quite close, as it happened. She clipped her wing on one, causing her to lose balance and veer off headfirst into the next pillar.

Rainbow Dash sat up, rubbing her head. She had hit a particularly dense bit, giving her a worse bump than it would have otherwise. It was at that moment, when she was still dazed and recovering, that somepony she didn’t want to see showed up.

“Hey, Rainbow Crash!” mocked her childhood bully.

“Ugh, I don’t have time for guys right now. I’ve gotta go,” said Rainbow Dash, with an almost noticeable  hint of disgust in her voice. She stood up and swayed a little, almost falling over, causing her bullies to laugh hysterically. As soon as she regained her balance, Rainbow swept past them.

“Oh, I don’t have time for you either,” he said as Rainbow was walking away. “I gotta go get my seat. I need front row seats for Rarity’s performance. She has awesome wings, unlike your scaredy-cat unicorn friend.”

Rainbow Dash was on him in an instant, shoving him against a pillar. “No one bad mouths my friends,” she said in a deathly quiet voice filled with anger and on the verge of exploding. He merely smiled.

“Hmph, I guess you care more about your friends than you do your own mom.” Rainbow Dash’s eyes widened and she lost all strength to hold him up. She backed off, letting him down. She needed to get away, to run away. He was right, Rainbow’s mom hated her so much that she didn’t even show up to her own daughter’s showcase. Between Twilight and now this, she couldn’t stand it anymore, she couldn’t handle it. Her eyes began to water up as she took off as fast as she could, just flying away and leaving that stupid competition behind.

Rainbow Dash didn’t know where she was flying, she just knew she needed to be away. On the other hand, she couldn’t just abandon her friends, could she? Rainbow needed a place to cool off and to rest. She needed to think some things over. She didn’t know how long she flew, but Dash soon arrived at the nearest bathroom and walked up to the sink.

Rainbow looked into the mirror and saw her own terrified face staring back at her. Her eyes were wide open, she was shaking uncontrollably, and she was breathing very hard. Rainbow Dash turned on the faucet to cold and splashed it in her face. She looked into the mirror again.

“You can’t do this, Dash,” Rainbow muttered to herself. “He was right; you are nothing but a hypocrite.”

“Rainbow Dash?” said a very familiar voice behind her.  Rainbow looked into the mirror and saw Twilight walking out of a grey stall.

“Oh, uh, hey, Twilight. I-I gotta go, see ya.” Rainbow began to quickly walk out of the bathroom.

“W-wait,” said Twilight as Rainbow reached the door. Dash tried to put on a happier face and then turned around. Twilight was standing there facing Rainbow with a slightly confused look on her face. “I heard what you said.”

“Oh, you did?” said Rainbow, looking down. “I suppose you’re just here to tell me I’m right, eh? You’re going to tell me that you’re too afraid to be near me anymore, and then you’re going to move back to Canterlot, just to get away from me. Am I right?”

“I heard what you said,” said Twilight, “and I disagree with you. You are not a hypocrite. You are a good and loyal friend.” Twilight smiled.

“No. No, you hate me and you want me to leave, right?” asked Rainbow.

“No, why would you think that?” Twilight raised an eyebrow.

“W-well...” stammered Rainbow Dash, “because it’s true, right? I messed up while flying you over, and now you hate me, right?” It had to be true, what else would explain how Twilight had acted?

“Oh, Rainbow.” Twilight put a hoof on Rainbow’s shoulder. She had a gentle, calm expression on her face. “I’ll admit I got quite scared while you were flying me over, but you stopped what you were doing when I asked anyway. And when we landed, I was too confused by my own feelings to properly convey them to anyone else. So, I panicked and ran, just like you tried to run from the bathroom a minute ago. I don’t hate you.”

“Then why are you here?” asked Rainbow. “If you’re that scared, why haven’t you just gone home?”

“Because I’m here to support you, Rainbow Dash. We all are. Trust me, I’m not leaving.”

Rainbow Dash smiled and her eyes watered up, but she quickly blinked them away and hoped nopony had noticed. “Thank you, Twi.”

“No problem. Now, do you want me to go with you to the registration booth?” Just then, an announcement rang throughout the stadium saying that there was five minutes left before registration closed.

“No time. See ya!” Rainbow exclaimed as she took off at maximum speed. Twilight smiled and walked off back to her seat, happy with how things turned out.

After registering, Rainbow Dash was told to wait with the other contestants. She was also given a piece of paper pulled out of a hat with a number on it. She looked around as she walked into the back room. There were ponies of all shapes and sizes doing pre-flight stretches, mingling, and just generally trying to pass the time until it was their time to shine. Rainbow didn’t need all that wimpy stretching, though. She was too cool for that. There were a couple dressing rooms as well, Rainbow could only guess why. You don’t impress Wonderbolts with your looks, you gotta have awesome flying! She didn’t have long to wonder though, as a pony went and knocked on the door. Rarity stuck her head out.

“I’m going to be a while,” she said. Rarity then held her hoof up and blew her hoof shavings into the poor pony’s face.

Rainbow Dash went over to the curtain to see where her friends were sitting. When she looked out at the huge crowd, though, she was only reminded of a harder time in her life. A time she frequently tried to forget. Rainbow Dash could never forget though. It would still linger in the back of her mind, waiting to break free and torment her once again. Such as right now. It was clawing at the bars, trying to convince her she was a failure. That day; that horrible, horrible day changed her life forever.

Just then, the announcer’s voice boomed throughout the stadium, announcing the arrival of Princess Celestia. She was sitting in the most luxurious box seat that the stadium had. Next to her were two royal guards, watching the entire crowd like a hawk. If only they had been there that day, thought Rainbow Dash. Then things would have turned out differently; she was sure of it. Then the announcer introduced the Wonderbolts themselves.

With smoke trailing out behind them, the Wonderbolts flew side by side from behind the announcer. Rainbow's eyes widened as they then sharply pulled up in perfect unison. Her heart raced as they got into a perfectly straight pillar. If one of them was going too slow or too fast, it would ruin the whole thing. It was a pillar of awesomeness, as far as Rainbow Dash was concerned. The Wonderbolts got into a tiny circle and exploded outward with a firework going off from the center. Pure unadulterated awesome. They separated into groups of three, then got into their judging seats.

Rainbow Dash looked around the stadium one more time, and came upon her bullies. All three of them. This brought Rainbow right back to her problem. Her mother. But before Rainbow Dash had any time to dwell on it, the competition started.

The first pony went and flew out of the curtains to perform. When Rainbow Dash’s number came up, she switched it with somepony elses. When it was Rarity’s turn, she wasn’t ready yet, so she couldn’t go out.

Rainbow Dash continued her charade for the rest of the competition, until it was just her and Rarity left.

“Number fifteen, let’s go!” said the supervisor, nudging Rainbow Dash. Just then, Rarity stepped out of the dressing room in the silliest getup Rainbow had ever seen. She looked, quite frankly, like a giant peacock.

“Rarity... is ready,” she said, with the most self important voice Rainbow Dash had ever heard.

“Look, ladies. I don't know what to tell you,” said the supervisor. “There's only time for one more performance. If you both want to compete, you'll just have to go out there together!”

“Well, Rainbow Dash?” asked Rarity. “Shall we?”

    New Chapter.

A bird soared through the air, on its way back to its twig and pine needle nest. A faint whistling noise could be heard through the mild wind. It grew noisier as the blue bird neared the majestic city of clouds that filled the sky. The bird was used to it being noisier around the city, which is why it nested so far away, but this was a different kind of noise. It was higher, more like a fellow bird’s call. Not a sound the bird was familiar with hearing from the city.

The scream, as the bird was now calling it, was very quickly getting louder. One second it was no more than a howl riding the wind, the next it was an ear piercing scream that ripped through the air.

The bird looked up at the weird little settlement above, only to see a white pony barreling directly at where it now flew. The bird screeched in panic and barely dodged the strange occurrence as the pony plummeted to the earth below. The bird sighed in relief that it had managed to escape unharmed from what was surely a one-time happening.

The bird had stopped a few feet away for a moment to catch its breath after such an astounding event when three more ponies bolted down after the mysterious white pony. Okay, now a two-time event. After having rested for, in its opinion, a good long while, the bird continued its journey back to its family.

It had barely made it more than a few feet away when a much deeper noise filled the air, although it stopped a few seconds later. Still, it made the bird look around again to see what all of the commotion was. It looked up and saw a blue blur cutting through the air much faster than the four ponies before it. In fact, much faster than anything the bird had ever seen before. It hovered there and watched in utter awe as the pony continued to gain speed.

The bird remembered its dreams from when it was only a fledgling. It had aspirations of being very fast, but all of its elders had hated the idea. They forced it to have a normal life, raise a normal family. It had grown used to the idea of a normal life, but it still sometimes sat in its nest, staring at the sky, remembering the dreams of a forgotten future.

The pony was flying at truly blistering speeds. Speeds so fast that they produced something even stranger than anything the bird had seen that day. As it passed directly by the bird, a mind-mangling explosion of color, noise, and light filled the small bird’s senses. The shockwave of which propelled it far, far away. In fact, it happened to land only a short distance from its nest.

At the same time, up in the Cloudsdale stadium, a cold chill ran down a purple pony’s spine.

Twilight Sparkle suddenly jumped back, catching herself with her forelegs. Her eyes were as wide as the sun that shone down upon them. She kicked herself back to the wall and leaned against it. Twilight sat on the cloud breathing very heavily. Her stomach churned. That... That explosion. That sonic rainboom, as it must have been, seemed incredibly familiar to Twilight. She closed her eyes and brought her hooves to her temples as she racked her brain for the answer. No matter how deep she looked, an explanation seemed out of reach.

Twilight’s thoughts were thrown back to the competition as the crowd went insane. She noticed a rainbow forming over the stadium. At the front of the rainbow flew Rainbow Dash, and she had Rarity and the Wonderbolts in her hooves. Twilight tried to contain herself as the excitement coursed through her veins. Her heart pounded against her chest. And, finally, she lost control for a moment.

“Yes!” Twilight yelled, her voice cracking loudly and her arms waving manically. As she sat there, watching Rainbow Dash fly triumphantly over the stadium, a strange, different kind of joy filled her. It was warm, almost like a fire had lit inside her body. It felt good.

Rainbow Dash flew up through the center of the stadium and handed off the ponies to other pegasi. She had a short conversation with Rarity before they flew her away. Rainbow Dash stared in awe at the crowd as they cheered at the top of their lungs. Streamers and confetti rained down from above.

Princess Celestia and two royal guards flew down to the bottom of the stadium and landed next to Rainbow Dash. Celestia talked to Rainbow for a moment, whose look got incredibly more excited, then turned to face the crowd.

“for her incredible act of bravery, and her spectacular sonic rainboom, I'm presenting the grand prize for best young flyer to this year's winner, Miss Rainbow Dash!” The whole stadium went berserk. Twilight yelled and cheered. Her friends did the same, and so did the rest of the stadium. The warm, fire-like feeling inside Twilight grew ever stronger.

Twilight soon found herself and her friends going down to congratulate Dash, the smile never leaving Twilight’s face. When they approached, Rainbow was standing in awe facing the crowd. She looked truly happy, Twilight thought.

The stadium was bursting with the excited noises of a satisfied crowd. As Twilight and her friends approached Rainbow Dash, Rainbow turned around and noticed them. As she walked over, her wings did a small flutter and she let out a short giggle of excitement.

“Hey, guys!” exclaimed Rainbow Dash. “Hey, Twilight,” she added, slightly quieter.

“Oh my gosh! Congratulations!” exclaimed Pinkie Pie as her face grew a huge grin and her eyes lit up with giddy excitement. “You were all like, whoosh! Zam! Kaboo–”

“You did a mighty fine job out there, Dash!” interrupted Applejack, patting Rainbow on the shoulder.

Fluttershy stood there with an insecure smile on her face. “Oh, um, hi, Rainbow. You really did look good out there.”

“Thanks, guys! But I really couldn’t have done it without all of you,” said Rainbow Dash. “And I have Twilight to thank for getting you all up here,” she added, walking over to Twilight, whose heart began beating harder. Rainbow leaned in closer. “And thanks for earlier, you know?” she added in an undertone.

“Y-yeah, you’re welcome.” The smile faded from Rainbow’s face for a moment and a pained look overcame her eyes. She closed her eyes and shook her head lightly, soon regaining her confident look. “Are you all right?” asked Twilight.

“Oh, yeah, I’m fine. Hey, let’s go see Rarity, okay? I want to show you around Cloudsdale some more. Oh, and you can do your spell to let her walk on clouds again, right?” Rainbow Dash raised her eyebrow expectantly.

    “Oh, yeah, of course.”

“Cool, great, thanks.” Rainbow Dash started off towards Twilight’s balloon, leaving Twilight alone and without witnesses to see her face flush slightly. Twilight watched Rainbow walk away, with her toned body and her unkempt mane splayed beautifully against her cool blue coat... What was she thinking about? This was not how you think of a friend. Twilight shook her head and pushed the thoughts away.

Twilight looked up and noticed that she had fallen behind the other ponies. She hurried ahead and caught up to them. Rainbow Dash didn’t seem to have noticed and was already busy recounting her tale.

Twilight smiled and listened as Rainbow told her story, seemingly adding overly-dramatic parts wherever she felt like it. She changed it so that Rarity was mere inches from the ground when Rainbow Dash had caught her and that she came within millimeters of hitting an innocent bird. She seemed to have recovered, or at least been distracted, from whatever was bothering her. Although, hearing the story brought Twilight back to her dilemma. Where had she seen a sonic rainboom before?

Twilight came to a conclusion on how she could find out just as they approached the tall balloon resting gently upon the soft white cloud.

Rarity was sitting on her haunches with her eyes closed. She was breathing very softly. Her ears perked up at the sound of Rainbow Dash’s voice, and she opened her eyes. “Oh, hello there, girls. I still can’t thank you enough for saving my life, Rainbow Dash.” Rarity was still in that ridiculous getup that she had been wearing.

Rainbow Dash made a curious sort of face. She smiled and furrowed her brows a little. Soon, she walked over to Rarity and patted her on the shoulder and said “Hey, it’s all right. I’d do it any day for anypony.” After, she turned towards Twilight and raised an eyebrow.

Twilight realized that Rainbow Dash wanted her to perform the spell and closed her eyes to concentrate.

Rarity’s eyes grew ever-so-slightly wider. “Oh, dear, I really don’t think that that is necessary. I’m sorry, but I am not feeling myself after that... incident. I’d really much rather go home and have a nice and relaxing cup of tea.”

Rainbow Dash stood up with her forelegs on the side of the basket and her wings flapping lightly. “What? I really wanted to show you guys around some more. Plus, how are going to get back? Twilight is the only one that can fly that balloon.”

Twilight’s ears perked slightly at the mention of her name. “Oh, don’t worry. I’m feeling a little tired myself, so I can bring her back and then go and take a quick nap.”

Rainbow Dash walked over to Twilight and smiled warmly. “Hey, I understand. As long as you’ll be back later. I don’t think I could bring the rest of these ponies back alone.” Twilight smiled and nodded in thanks, then went over and climbed into the balloon.

Soon, they were on their way. They flew over the vast rolling hills and under the bright blue sky. One time, Twilight smiled as the breeze picked up a little and ruffled her mane slightly. It made her feel bright and fresh again to be at such a low altitude. The happy feeling continued all the way until they reached Rarity’s boutique.

Rarity stepped out of the balloon and made a motion to kiss the ground, but a disgusted look came over her face as she looked at how gross the dirt was. She raised her chin and walked to the door. The fashion diva turned around. “Would you like to come in for some tea, dear?”

Twilight laughed awkwardly and her ears lowered a bit. “Oh, I couldn’t. I’m really tired. Maybe some other time.”

Rarity opened her door. “Oh, that’s quite all right, darling. I completely understand. Maybe some other time indeed. Tah tah!” Rarity stepped over her threshold and closed the door behind her. It creaked to a shut as Twilight took off once again.

Twilight was soon greeted by the huge tree that she called home. A cool breeze ruffled its leaves, but aside from that, it was silent.

Twilight parked her balloon just outside and went in. “Spike!” she called, going towards the stairs to her room.

Spike came bustling out of the kitchen with an eyebrow raised. “Back so soon? I figured you would have been gone all day.”

“No time to explain, just follow,” said Twilight, starting off up the stairs. She was soon in her room by her personal bookcase with Spike trailing behind. “I need you to get me all of my journals from around the time I hatched you.”

Spike scratched his head. “Why do you need those?”

“I just... I-I need to know something.” Spike grumbled and went off in search of the books. Twilight sat down on her bed and waited patiently. After a little bit, Spike came by with a frustrated look on his face. He grabbed a ladder and went back to his search. Spike came back a couple minutes later with a good sized pile of books and put them down.

Spike backed up. “There,” he said, presenting the pile with his arms. “Now, will you tell me why you wanted them?”

Twilight levitated the top one over to herself and opened it. “I’ll explain later. For now, help me look for anything that would describe a sonic rainboom.”

Spike scratched his head again. “Isn’t that what Rainbow Dash was going to do today? Didn’t it work?”

Twilight continued to flip through the pages of her journal. “Yes, and she did do it. It looked amazing. The only problem is, is that I feel like I’ve seen it before. It’s the weirdest thing. I don’t remember when, but I have the utmost confidence that I have. The only thing I have to go by is that it feels like it’s from around the time when I was still a young filly.”

And so Twilight and Spike searched. Seconds turned to minutes, which in turn became hours. They looked through almost every book that Spike had gotten out. From the days that Twilight was a young filly to the days that Twilight was still getting used to handling raising a baby dragon. The pair looked in no particular order of book, one would be from near the beginning and the next near the end.

Spike threw the book he was currently in down and stood up. “I’m gonna go get a drink.” Spike trudged to the stairs and Twilight swore that she heard him saying something about this being a waste of time.

Twilight flipped absent mindedly through the book she was currently reading. Her mind was on autopilot, scanning for words that would be of any use in her search. Twilight reached the end of her book and reached for another, but her hoof fell upon the hard ground.

Twilight was out of books and she still hadn’t found what she was looking for. She let out a frustrated sigh and looked around, and she came upon the book that Spike had left out. Not ready to give up quite yet, Twilight grabbed the book and began flipping through it.

She knew she had seen it before, just not when. Twilight could picture it in her mind’s eye, but the rest of the details came up foggy. She knew it wasn’t just deja vu because her memory was from below it, not above, and she knew she was young because she remembered older ponies standing next to her, although she couldn’t picture who they were.

Twilight’s heart skipped a beat as she read a word. A single word. Rainbow.

Twilight’s heart raced as she read through the entry, her tongue glued to her upper lip. It was from the day of her entrance exams. She remembered that day! In fact, she cherished that memory! Why hadn’t she thought of it before? Twilight recalled what had happened. She had failed and failed and failed and failed. She had given up all hope. She had walked over to the window to gaze out over the towers. Just then, right over the towers!

Twilight suddenly screamed and flailed back, throwing herself against the pillows. She had begun to feel magic swelling up in her horn, and she wasn’t the one doing it. Twilight scrambled off of the bed, knocking over the nightstand as she did so. She hurried towards the bathroom door, almost stumbling over her hooves. But Twilight didn’t make it to the bathroom, for a bright light flooded the room, and when it cleared, she was gone.

  8. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow, but I tried Twilight's and it made me feel incredibly relaxed. I'm not sure if it's the hypnosis or the relaxed state, but I was having some trouble with writing my fanfiction earlier, but I'm not having nearly as much trouble now. The words are flying off of my fingers in such a way that I can't describe other than that it feels amazing.

Yeah, I'll definitely try it again tomorrow.

  9. Well... You could say I like Classic Rock. I own quite a few classic rock band t-shirts, I have 3920 classic rock songs in my music library, and I recently played Space Station #5 by Montrose in my school's annual Winter Show. I have also played in the last few years Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith, Custard Pie by Led Zeppelin, Same Old Song and Dance by Aerosmith, TNT by AC/DC, and I am planning on playing Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas in an upcoming show. So yeah, you could say I like classic rock...

  10. I'll post it in the spoiler, but I'd appreciate it if you read it on FiMFiction.net, because I could use the views.

Twilight Sparkle walks home with a spring in her step. The blue sky fills the endless sky and the birds chirp away from their roosts in the lush trees. A cool breeze prickles Twilight's ears as she nears the library she calls home. Twilight has the perfect dinner date planned for her and Rainbow Dash. Nothing could go wrong, could it?

Twilight walked into the library, out of the crisp morning air, and finally done with her morning chores. She could hear Rainbow Dash’s soft snores from above, meaning she hadn’t gone to work yet. Twilight sighed as she went to the kitchen with her bag of fritters and set them down. She figured that since Rainbow wasn’t up yet, she might need some breakfast. As Twilight took a fritter out of the bag for Dash, her stomach growled, so she took another out to quell her own hunger.

As she walked through the living room on the way upstairs, Twilight had to resist the almost unbearable urge to go and rest her aching body and her heavy eyes on the big, warm, comfortable recliner... She found herself involuntarily drifting towards it. Twilight snapped herself out of it and went up the staircase instead.

When she got to their room, Rainbow Dash was sprawled out on top of the blanket, hooves tucked in ever so slightly and a content smile on her face. Her wings were folded in, not a feather out of place. She looked cute, Twilight thought. Like an adorable... Well, like an adorable Rainbow Dash. Twilight blinked away her tiredness for the moment, for Rainbow’s sake. Her hooves clopped against the floor as she walked to the bed.

“Rainbow,” said Twilight softly, but to no avail. Rainbow Dash didn’t stir from her sleep. “Rainbow,” she repeated, before planting a light kiss upon her closed lips.

“I wanna go to the marshmallow kingdom, mommy...” Rainbow Dash mumbled and rolled over, causing the old wooden bed to creak a little.

“Rainbow,” Twilight repeated at a normal speaking level, while lightly shaking her.

“Twilight...?” she asked, her eyes slowly drifting open.

“Come on, you have to get to your job,” said Twilight. “You don’t want to be late for our date, do you? Here, I brought you a fritter,” she added, placing both of the treats on the side table. Twilight and Rainbow Dash had a picnic planned for the day. It was going to be fantastic thanks to the surprises Twilight had in store. She just needed Dash out of her hair for a little while to set everything up.

“Thanks,” said Rainbow, sitting up and taking one of them. She chewed for a moment, savoring the delicious taste, then swallowed. “The weather ponies can live without me for one morning, can’t they?”

“Rainbow, you’re already late enough as it is. Just go to work,” said Twilight. The bedsprings groaned as Twilight levitated Rainbow Dash off of them and onto the old, worn ground.

“Can’t we just start the date early? I really don’t want to go to work today.” Rainbow tried to climb back into bed, but Twilight heldfast.

“You know you’re really close to being fired, right? Besides, you’ve already missed half of the morning.” Water poured from the showerhead in the bathroom as Twilight’s horn glowed for a moment.

“Fine. But you have to catch me first.” Rainbow Dash’s eyes lit up with a playful, wild look to them. She smiled and flared her wings.

“Rainbow, you don’t have time for this. Just get in the shower,” said Twilight. Steam soon began to overtake the bathroom.

With what Twilight thought looked strangely like a smirk, Rainbow Dash flew out of the bedroom and down the stairs. There was a flash of light, and a moment later Twilight appeared in the library’s main room to try and cut Dash off. Rainbow dodged around her, almost knocking over the coat rack, and barreled into the kitchen. Twilight ran after her. Her horn glowed as her spell missed its target and random objects got thrown around. Flour exploded against the wall and chairs got knocked over. Rainbow flew right back past her, swooping out of the way of the random flying household items. Having done this many a time, Twilight teleported herself back to their bedroom, where Rainbow Dash would surely go next.

Rainbow Dash flew back up the stairs and crashed into Twilight.

With a loud bang, they fell to the floor. The pair laid there for a moment panting loudly, and then burst into laughter. It felt good. Laughter was good. It was a sign of a healthy relationship, Twilight thought. They laid there laughing for what felt like the longest time, simply enjoying being with each other.

“One of these days, we shouldn’t have to do that anymore,” said Twilight, still coming down from their high.

“But where’s the fun in that?” said Rainbow, panting loudly.

“I suppose you’re right. But you really do have to get going. I’ll see you later.” Twilight gave Rainbow one more kiss. “I love you.”

“I love you too. See ya later!” Rainbow Dash soared out of the second-floor window, leaving only a fading rainbow behind. Twilight frantically ran to the window and stuck her head out.

“Rainbow! You forgot to take a shower!” she called.

“Ha ha, I’ll just fly through a cloud. See ya later!” Rainbow Dash was soon out of speaking range. Twilight sighed as she closed the window.

With a free moment to herself, Twilight instinctively went to go get Spike to help her with the preparations, but instead frowned and looked at where his bed used to be. She looked out the window toward Canterlot and wished him good luck on his endeavors, wherever they may be.

Of course, he would only be gone another few days, and he had only taken his bed because he loved it so much, but all the same, Twilight still missed him as if he’d been gone for months.

Her eyes became heavy once again as she stood there, gazing out into the unknown. She figured she could spare a power-nap; she had the time. Twilight was soon trudging over to the bed and into its warm, inviting, soft embrace...

Twilight jolted awake, her eyes wide. How long had she slept? What time was it? She frantically looked around for a clock, and when she found one, her eyes widened even more. It was now only two hours before the time they had their date planned for!

Twilight threw herself out of the evil, silky, deceitful, wonderful bed, ran down the stairs, and grabbed her saddlebag off of the coat rack, finally knocking over the coat rack entirely. With a noisy thump, the little specks of dust that had collected on top of it scattered into the air.

Twilight ran and ran, and continued running all the way to the Carousel Boutique. She walked in and looked around, but Rarity was nowhere to be seen.

    “Rarity?” called Twilight.

“Oh! Just one moment dear, I’m almost done with your picnic blanket,” replied Rarity, from the back room. Twilight looked around the boutique and noted that it really hadn’t changed much in the time she was in Ponyville. It still had all of the same mannequins, the same boxes of materials, and the same layout. Twilight supposed that a store like this didn’t really need to change much, besides the swapping out of display dresses in order to fit in with current fashions.

Twilight was still lost in her thoughts when Rarity came out, finally done with the blanket. But she had hidden it behind a blue curtain, so Twilight couldn’t see how it looked.

“Here you go, dear! I do say it is one of my finest blankets,” said Rarity, continuing to keep it hidden.

“Thank you, Rarity. Now, can I actually, you know, see it?” Twilight tried to walk around the curtain, but Rarity blocked the way.

“Yes, of course, dear. I just wanted to make sure your full attention was on this masterpiece.” Twilight sighed in annoyance. Rarity made sure that Twilight was in the perfect viewing spot, and then got off to the side of the curtain.

“Now, gaze upon this magnificent beauty!” Rarity flamboyantly swung the curtains out of the way, sliding to the very edge of their rack, where they fell dramatically into place.

“Wow! It looks fantastic, Rarity.” And it did. It was a rainbow patterned blanket, perfectly woven together. It had beautiful edging that somehow managed to bring out all of the vibrant colors inside.

“Yes, I do say it came out marvelously. Now, do tell, why did you need it on such short notice?” asked Rarity, leaving it in its display podium.

“Oh, you know... Rainbow and I are having a picnic this afternoon...” said Twilight, looking sheepishly at the ground.

“But why couldn’t you use one of your other blankets? I mean, I don’t mind making it, but-” Rarity’s eyes widened. “Oh! You don’t mean?!” Rarity exclaimed. “Oh! You do!”

Rarity danced in her hooves for a moment with a look of giddy excitement on her face. It got more and more frantic until, finally, Rarity collapsed in an overly dramatic fashion. She had stood up on her hind legs, walked back a couple steps, and then quite gracefully fell over.

Twilight sighed. That pony could be just a teensy bit melodramatic at times. She smiled and then levitated the pony onto the couch in the backroom. Twilight wrote a note saying what had happened and left it on a table. After that was done, Twilight went back to grab the picnic blanket and carefully folded enough to fit into her saddlebag. Twilight figured that Rarity would probably deny that she should pay for the blanket, but Twilight left some money anyway, and then left.

On her way to the restaurant where she would pick up the food, Twilight considered for a moment how much time she had left. She came to the conclusion that she may have overreacted a little bit about being late and that she did have a little time for a distraction. Twilight sanctioned off five minutes of her schedule to go hear the birds sing. She entered the park expecting to hear their songs of joy, but only heard their screams of terror.

Twilight galloped over to the birds’ favorite tree, but quickly hid behind some bushes. For standing there was Rainbow Dash’s old friend, Gilda. She stood there with a smug look on her face, roaring at the defenseless birds. With the birds finding it in their little brains that now would be a good time to scatter, Twilight knew she only had a short time before Gilda saw her. She didn’t have enough time to deal with Gilda. First Rainbow Dash and then the Boutique left Twilight with much less time than she had hoped to set up their pi-

“Hey, don’t I recognize you?” asked Gilda, stomping over to the bushes in which Twilight hid. Twilight needed to make this quick; she didn’t have the time to spare.

“Uhm, no?” Twilight dearly hoped that she’d believe her flat-out lie.

“Yeah, your Rainbow Dash’s friend, ain’t ya?” Twilight started sweating lightly as Gilda walked a little closer, now only a foot from Twilight.

“Oh! You’re Gilda, right? I remember you. I’m Twilight. Anyway, I really have to be going now.” Twilight started to back away as to not prolong the dreaded conversation any longer.

“Oh, now where’s the fun in that? I’m just trying to be friendly here, is all,” said Gilda, stepping forward.“I heard that RD was dating a nerd. That wouldn’t happen to be you? Would it?” Gilda raised her talons menacingly in front of Twilight’s face.

    “Y-yeah, that’s me.”

“Oh, then it’s true. Well, I suppose Dash is now one-hundred percent lame.” Anger flared in Twilight’s eyes at the insult of her fillyfriend. She forcefully levitated Gilda’s claws off of her tail and backed away.

“Actually, Rainbow Dash and I have a date planned today that I still have to set up. Good day to you.” Twilight left and walked back through the park’s trees. Through the light wooded section and over the babbling brook. Soon she left the jerk-of-a-griffon behind once and for all and went to the restaurant to pick up their food, then continued on her journey across Ponyville.

Twilight approached the hill she had planned the picnic for. It was quite a large hill on the outskirts of Ponyville. Her eyes followed the lush green grass, as it seemed to go on forever. But it was soon replaced by a magnificent sky, as blue as Rainbow Dash.

When Twilight reached the top, she took a moment to rest and enjoy the view. In the fields and forests below, Twilight could see the little fillies running about, trying to collect their cutie marks, all while relishing in the wonderful feeling of youth. She could see ponies doing their shopping, trying to get that last apple, that last baked good, before they had to get back and cook supper. Twilight was content with the world.

Twilight was considering her own life for a moment when she realized something. She was happy. She was truly, truly happy.

Twilight looked away from town and above the Everfree, where she could see the little specks of the weather ponies clearing away the storm clouds before they could reach Ponyville. They were clearing just enough so that the storm clouds would reach Ponyville later that night.

The weather ponies looked to almost be done, so Twilight went right to work setting up the picnic. While she spread out the blanket and took out the food, Twilight carefully rehearsed the plan in her head. After she was done setting up the picnic and Rainbow Dash wasn’t there yet, Twilight got out a book and laid down under the cool shade of a nearby tree.

Twilight got so engrossed in her book that she didn’t hear Rainbow Dash swoop almost silently in. So, naturally, Twilight was quite surprised when she felt another pair of lips on her own, but she soon started to enjoy the kiss. Even kissing harder in response.

Rainbow Dash finished the kiss and laughed. “Hey, Twilight,” she said with a warm smile.

“Hey, Dash,” said Twilight, marking her place in the book and putting it back in her saddlebag. “Dinner’s right over there. I’m sorry if it’s a little cold. You took a little longer than I expected.”

“It’s all right, it took longer than I expected too. Anyway, let’s eat.” Rainbow took off her weather suit, walked over to the picnic blanket, and sat down. Twilight scooped some pasta and roasted vegetables onto their plates and red wine into their glasses.

“Mmm! This looks great! Where did you get it?” Rainbow asked, staring excitedly down at her plate.

“Oh, you know, just a resturaunt...” Twilight smiled.

“Come on, just tell me where, I won’t bite,” said Rainbow, “yet,” she added, smiling mischievously at Twilight.

Twilight giggled. “Trotillini’s,” she said, innocently.

“What?! That place is super expensive! How can you afford that?”

“Trust me, it’s fine.” Twilight took a bite.

“All right, I trust you.” When Rainbow Dash took a bite, she looked like she nearly passed out from pleasure. “Oh. My. Gosh. This is awesome! Of course, I still prefer good ol’ fashioned hay fries and a daisy sandwich, but this is amazing too.”

“It better be,” Twilight said, “I did have to pull out my ‘Princess Celestia’s student’ card in order for them to give it to me to go.”

Rainbow Dash laughed. “It really is great. Thank you, Twi.”

“Well, anyway, I’m glad you like it,” said Twilight, smiling at her own genius. “So, how was your day?” she asked.

“It was okay, I guess. Mostly normal. Except this one pony that almost got struck by lightning, but those suits you had those eggheads in Canterlot make saved his life. It was pretty awesome, though.”

Twilight had done some experimenting after Rainbow Dash had had a very close call. Twilight used a similar enchantment to the one put on unicorns when they’re young. Since unicorns attract lightning because of their horn, they need an enchantment to dissipate the lightning before it can hit. She used that enchantment on a flight suit and it worked. It became lightning proof.

“Hey!” exclaimed Rainbow Dash, excitement glowing in her eyes. “Maybe you could commission those for the Wonderbolts! They’d think it was so awesome, that they’d totally let me join!” Rainbow’s wings extended and her face lit up in excitement at the thought of it.

“Hmm,” considered Twilight, “that’s a great idea! When we get home, I’ll write to Princess Celestia.”

They continued talking for a while, occasionally stealing glances at each other. Twilight went over the plan one more time in her head and realized she couldn’t do it. She would have to just skip it and get straight to her speech. Twilight wished she could complete her plan, but the temptation was too great.

Twilight sighed. “Rainbow Dash,” said Twilight, with a backdrop of the setting sun. “You are the best fillyfriend I could ask for.”

“Twilight?” asked Rainbow Dash, raising an eyebrow curiously.

“I love you and everything about you, including your awesome, awesome flying. I love the way you sleep in the morning and the way you make me chase you around the house. I love the way you sneak up and give me kisses and the way you laugh. I even love the way you try to help me with my research. I don’t really know what I’d do without you anymore. You have become so integrated in my life that I’d probably just completely break without you around. And that’s why,” Twilight got down on her knees, “I need to ask you this.”

    “Twilight...”

“Rainbow Dash, will you marry me?” She asked it. Twilight asked the big one. She asked the wild, rainbow maned pegasus that she so dearly loved to commit the rest of her life to her. Twilight. Her fillyfriend.

“Twilight...” said Rainbow Dash, tears of joy starting to form in her eyes. She was about to run over and hug Twilight with abandon when something terrible happened.

“Wow. You really are dating total eggheads now.” Twilight’s stomach dropped. She recognized that voice. It was the same voice whose owner she had forgotten to tell Rainbow Dash she had seen.

“Gilda?” asked Rainbow Dash, utterly perplexed by the appearance of her old friend.

Gilda dropped down right next to Twilight, making Twilight jump. How long had she been hovering above them? What had she heard? Twilight prepared her magic and backed off a little.

“I heard it all, Dash. When I talked to your little nerd friend here a little while ago, I didn’t really believe her when she told me you had stooped that low. Now, I’ll give you one more chance to stop being a complete lame-o or else.”

“No.” said Rainbow Dash definitely. “If you’re going to insult my friend. No, my fillyfriend, then I have nothing more to say to you.” Rainbow Dash stood up and flared her wings. “Go away. Now!” she ordered.

“Fine. But how do you like it if I do this?!” Gilda leaned down and grabbed the corner of the picnic blanket, and then flipped it over, sending the delicious plates of food cascading around the hill, ruining them forever.

All the work Twilight put into their date, ruined. All of the effort she had made in order to make this perfect, lost. Everything was gone. Twilight screamed, tears falling down her face, and lunged herself at Gilda, tackling her to the ground. At the same time, she grabbed entire trees and ripped them out of the ground, sending all of the little woodland critters inhabiting them scampering for their lives.

With the trees aimed right at Gilda’s head, Twilight spoke. “Take it back. All of the insults! All of the hurtful words! All of it. Take them back. Or I don’t know what I’ll do.” The voice she heard next was not one she had expected to hear.

“Twilight. Stop.” It was Rainbow Dash’s. Full realization came to Twilight as she sat atop the griffon, ready to strike her down at a moment's notice. Her stomach churned and she crawled off of Gilda. She put the huge trees down with a thump and broke down into tears.

“I’m sorry! I’m sorry, Rainbow Dash!” Twilight curled up into a ball and let the gentle stream leak out of her eyes. “I don’t know what came over me!” she sobbed.

“It’s okay, Twilight. I understand,” said Rainbow Dash, flying over and wrapping a wing around Twilight, holding her close. She looked up at the griffon still lying there breathing very heavily. “You. Get out of here and don’t come back, or I won’t stop her next time.”

Gilda roared as loud as she could and lunged at the pair of them, throwing Rainbow Dash a few feet away where she landed hard on her wing, spraining it. Gilda picked Twilight up and threw her at the pile of trees. Gilda flew at Twilight and punched as hard as she could. A horrible cracking sound could be heard as Gilda’s punch found home, a few inches from Twilight’s head. With Twilight pinned down, Gilda clapped against at Twilight’s horn, sending a white-hot sensation burned through Twilight’s body, sending her hooves flying up to her horn. Gilda backed off to look at her handiwork.

“H-how did you find us?” asked Twilight, trying to get her magic at the ready. But nothing was happening. She didn’t feel that familiar sensation running through her body, up to her mind, and into her horn. She didn’t feel that wonderful feeling of infinite possibilities all within her grasp. All Twilight felt was the throbbing from the base of her horn, sending shivers throughout her body.

“Heh, I followed you here. Simple as that. I just wanted to see how low Rainbow Dash had sunk. Very low, as it happens.” Twilight tried to back away. “Oh no, you’re not getting away that easily,” said Gilda, grabbing Twilight and throwing her to the hard ground. Twilight tried to teleport her and Dash out of there, but, again, nothing came out. She tried again, but there wasn’t even a spark.

“I’ve learned some things, in my years. One of those things was how to stop a unicorn’s magic. A simple smack to the sides of the horn usually does it.” GIlda smirked down at Twilight. Twilight just wanted to curl up into a ball and hide away forever, because without her magic, she was useless.

Twilight looked pleadingly at Rainbow Dash, whose look was getting angrier by the second. Rainbow’s breathing quickened and her wings extended.

“Hey! Get away from her!” yelled Rainbow Dash, launching as fast as she could at Gilda. When Rainbow was only a few feet away, she changed her course to Twilight instead. She was almost at Twilight when Gilda clawed at Dash, hitting deeply at the base of her wing, sending her tumbling off to the side.

“Dash, you are so uncool, trying to save an egghead like this. I bet you can’t even beat me in a race anymore,” said Gilda, picking Twilight up and taking off at speeds that surprised Twilight. As they flew away from Ponyville, a she got an even larger surprise that shook her to the very core. Rainbow Dash was having trouble keeping up with the malicious Gilda. The wound Gilda had given her on top of the sprained wing was slowing her down greatly.

“Gilda, give her back right now!” shouted Rainbow Dash. Ponyville was but a mere speck no larger than an anthill at that point, and below them the trees of the Everfree Forest seemed to be only twigs covering a large open field.

“Or what?” said Gilda, over the sound of the howling wind.

“Gilda, there’s a storm out this way, turn around!” shouted Rainbow. Twilight turned her head around, and sure enough, there was a huge, ominous black cloud looming ahead of them.

“Come on Dash, see if you can catch me,” said Gilda, quickening her pace. As the cloud got closer, they started pulling up, and soon they were above it. Twilight could hear the lightning arcing around inside of it, ready to strike.

Twilight looked down into the mass of storm below her. Flashes of blinding white light, followed by loud roars were constant. The clouds almost seemed angry at the world, swirling and mixing. The deafeningly loud deep booms sounded like they were yelling at the world, telling it to shut up or else. Twilight knew not to fight it right now, because if Gilda dropped her into that demon, she was a goner.

Gilda turned around to talk to Rainbow Dash, but she was nowhere to be seen.

“Hm, I guess she doesn’t really love you after-” Gilda was interrupted by a streak of quickly fading rainbow appearing below them. Twilight looked up and hovering there, with an evil look on her face that even scared Twilight, was Rainbow Dash.

“Gilda, I’ll say it again. Give her back!” yelled Rainbow Dash.

“You know, Rainbow Dash, you always were faster than me, but I was always stronger,” said Gilda in a deathly calm voice, unaffected by the deadly thunderstorm below.

“Gilda, what are talking about? Just let Twilight go!” Rainbow Dash had a confused and terrified look on her face as she began to realize the severity of the situation. If she attacked Gilda, Twilight would fall helplessly into the storm. If she didn’t attack, then who knows what would happen.

“Even though you didn’t know it, we were feared back in flight camp,” she said, slightly tightening her grip around Twilight’s neck.

“What? Look, I don’t care about the past right now, I just want Twilight back!”

“You know all those ponies you beat? They didn’t always like losing. If they came looking for you, I would teach them a lesson.” Gilda was continuing to speak in a frighteningly calm and steady voice. At the same time she was tightening her grip on Twilight’s neck even more. She was beginning to have trouble breathing.

“Gilda, Stop it!” said Rainbow Dash, tears forming in her eyes.

“They wouldn’t come to camp the next day, you thought out of humiliation. You have no idea how many times I saved the feathers on your back, and I never even asked for a thanks! And then I show up, in need of an old friend, and look at how you treated me!” Gilda extended the arm that held Twilight, her grip tightening even more. She couldn’t breathe now.

“Gilda...” said Rainbow Dash in a choked voice.

“You may have won the race, but you can’t win this.” Gilda looked Rainbow right in the eye, her grip on Twilight’s neck tightening to its limit, and then did the unthinkable.

    Gilda let go.

For a moment, Twilight was relieved that she could breath again, but she soon realized what was happening. She was falling into the single largest thunderstorm she had seen in years. Soon she was in the clouds and lightning arced around her. Thunder boomed as she continued her plummet.

Rainbow Dash appeared from through the clouds. “Twilight!” she yelled desperately, flying as close as she could.

“Rainbow Dash! Go! Get out of here! You’ll die without your suit!” Twilight yelled. Rainbow had left her suit back at the picnic sight. She was in a massive storm with absolutely no protection from the lightning. Rainbow Dash was in serious danger.

“I don’t care!” Rainbow shouted. “I can’t live without you! I can’t let you die here.” Rainbow Dash swooped below a rogue bolt of lightning. She attempted to fly closer to Twilight, but the lightning wouldn’t let her.

“What’s going on?! I can’t get near you, Twi!” she yelled over the booming thunder.

“Remember that enchantment on your flight suit? The enchantment that that is based off of couldn’t get rid of the fact that a unicorn’s horn attracts lightning. Even though I can’t get hit, it still tries to hit me. But you can get hit Rainbow Dash! You have to get out of here! I’m sorry. I love you.”

Before Rainbow Dash could respond, she had to dodge another rogue lightning bolt. “Heh heh, ‘fraid I can’t do that, Twilight. You know how it is.”

    “Rainbow!”

“By the way, the answer is yes.”

    “What?”

“The answer is yes, I’ll marry you.”

They left the cloud layer as Rainbow Dash fought against the lightning to try and save Twilight. She swooped and dodged, but the lightning only got worse the longer Rainbow Dash tried to fight it. She saw a weak spot on the other side of Twilight and decided to go for it. As she started through, it closed off, missing Dash by an inch.

The ground was getting much closer by the second, which meant that the lightning started to ease up a little. Rainbow tried again and, once again, almost got struck. Twilight knew that if Rainbow got struck, it was over. These were powerful blasts. The rain was now coming down in torrents, soaking them both to the core.

They were only a few hundred feet from the ground when Rainbow decided that it was now or never. She took the first opening she saw and dodged through quickly getting closer to Twilight. There was only a few feet between them, and with a final eruption of lightning, Rainbow Dash had caught Twilight. The moment Twilight felt the soft blue fur against her mane, she knew she’d be safe.

Rainbow coughed lightly. “I got you, Twi. I’m not goin’ anywhere.” Now that Rainbow Dash was in the protective barrier of the enchantment on Twilight, she was safe. They were safe.

“Rainbow Dash, I love you. Thank you,” said Twilight, hugging Dash with all of her strength. She knew that when she was in Dashie’s embrace, nothing bad could ever happen. Everything would be all right in the end.

“Heh heh, I suppose I love you too, Twilight.” Rainbow Dash suddenly grunted in pain and coughed. They began losing altitude.

“Dash?” asked Twilight. No response. “Dash!” exclaimed Twilight, frantically. But it was no use, they were soon on a collision course with a field. “Rainbow Dash! You have to wake up! You can’t leave me,” she cried, “You just can’t. Come on, Dash!” But it was still no use. They soon had a very rough landing in the field. Twilight rolled and landed a few feet away from Rainbow Dash. She immediately got up and ran to Dash to try and wake her. Twilight couldn’t let the love of her life die here. Twilight couldn’t let her best friend die here. Twilight couldn’t let Rainbow Dash die here.

“Rainbow, please wake up! Please!” cried Twilight, shaking her violently.

    “Twilight...?” said Rainbow Dash, weakly.

“Oh, Rainbow!” said Twilight, burying her face in Rainbow’s mane. She was alive. She had pulled through! “Don’t ever scare me like that again!”

“Oh, trust me, I’ll try not to.” Rainbow coughed.

Rainbow closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

“Rainbow Dash?” asked Twilight. Rainbow was clearly having trouble breathing. Something was wrong.

“So, where we goin’ for our honeymoon?” asked Rainbow Dash. She coughed loudly.

    “Rainbow Dash? What’s wrong?”

Rainbow Dash looked at her tail and mane. They were singed badly.

“Lightning? Oh Celestia... Come on, Dash, I-I’ll get you to the hospital, right now!” Twilight closed her eyes and concentrated with all of her might on the Ponyville hospital, but merely a light spark flew out.

“So, yeah. Where we goin’ for our honeymoon?” she asked again. Twilight couldn’t afford to think about that at the moment, she needed to find a way to get Dash to safety. Twilight frantically looked around, but there was nothing was in sight. She tried to remember where Zecora’s cottage was, but came up blank. Twilight attempted her teleport again, focusing on every little detail of the hospital, but only a few weak sparks appeared.

“Twilight, please, just answer me. I need it...” Rainbow Dash’s voice faded and her eyes closed.

“Rainbow Dash! No, no, no!” Twilight tried as hard as she could, and her efforts were paid off, for she began to feel the familiar effects of her spell. A few moments later, they were gone.

“Somepony, anypony, help!” cried Twilight. A passing pony heard, and then galloped inside the hospital to get help.

Rainbow Dash let another strained cough and slowly opened her eyes. “Hey, look, a rainbow...” she said. “ Hey, did I ever tell you about this place way up north? It’s got the best rainbows.”

“Aurora borealis...” recited Twilight. A group of ponies came running out of the hospital, with a stretcher trailing behind.

Rainbow coughed. “Just imagine it, sitting in front of a warm fireplace, with a cold wind howling outside. Maybe that’s where we can go for our honeymoon, it’ll be awesome...” The light faded from Rainbow Dash’s eyes, leaving only a blank stare behind. Her body lay as still as the cold winter ice.

    “Rainbow Dash?”

  11. Hello and welcome! You seem to have stumbled upon my secret lair! Or my humble abode! Whatever you want to call it, it doesn't really matter! It is here in this very thread that I shall post anything and... Well, anything, frankly. ;)  Whether it be writing prompts or mere writing exercises, it will go in here! Criticism is welcome and even recommended! Because as they say, whatever doesn't kill me makes me stronger. None of you plan to kill me, right? Right?!

Anyway, to start us off, I will post a visualization exercise that I wrote earlier today! What I was trying to describe will be in the second spoiler. This is unedited. I memorized a picture of what I was describing, then didn't let myself look at it until I was finished. And without further ado!

The circular ring reflected the light in a magnificent way. It shined so bright that it seemed to blind anyone who looked at it in its gloriousness. It was free of any dirt, smudge, or scar. It had not a single blemish to speak of. It was as smooth as a baby’s skin. Its silver tones shone through even the darkest of dark rooms. Its sheer beauty could raise man out of even the deepest of trenches created by their broken minds. It was a true spectacle to behold. It had no engravings, no person it was meant to be presented to. It was merely a ring of pure bliss to anyone who bought it. It need not be given to anyone, because they would not appreciate it.

Thanks for reading! Goodnight everybody, and see you next time!

  12. Well, you could say that... I've put well over 200 hours into Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, around 200 hours into Skyrim, at least 100 hours into Oblivion and Morrowind, over 100 hours into the original Tales of Symphonia, 90 hours into Tales of Vesperia, around 60 or 70 hours in Grand Theft Auto IV, and around the same in San Andreas.

  13. Well, I suppose you could say I have two things. One is my guitar; I'm really cautious when other people are touching it and I make sure they're handling it correctly. The other is my TV at my school. You see, there is this area at my school where you, after you're certified, you can bring a TV and play video games on it. I'm a certifier (as we call it) for it. Anyway, I like having my TV in a certain position on the table, and I swear, whenever someone else uses my TV, they always move it around, it's actually quite annoying.

  14. Okay, here's the situation: I have uploaded a story that I'm currently rewriting. It was only two chapters long at the time, so that's not really a problem. In the process of rewriting, I found I wasn't satisfied with the second chapter, so I want to change most of it.

I don't want to spoil it for any unsuspecting readers (it currently has 155 favorites on FiMFiction) so this will have to happen in PMs. I know it's unlikely that any readers will also happen upon this topic, but you can never be too careful.

Anyway, it's not standard fluffy TwiDash romance, it has other elements as well, which I will divulge further in PMs. I already have most of the story at large figured out, but no chapter specifics.

Heck, you could even be a proofreader if you please, the point is, I need some help.

I haven't uploaded the first chapter of the rewrite yet (it's still in pre-reading/editing), but I'll link you the old version if anyone asks.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

  15. I just finished watching the trilogy for the first time since I could actually comprehend what was going on, and I must say I see why everyone always praised them. They were simply fantastic. I am now more happy I'm going to see the midnight release of The Hobbit, and now I'm anticipating it much more. As I'm in America, I'll be seeing it on the 13th night/14th morning, and I simply can't wait. Maybe I should read the books now... (After I'm done with Dirk Gently, of course.)

  16. I played it when it first came out, but in my personal opinion, it wasn't nearly as good as the first. I found that the first one had better characters with better personality ( I prefer a dim Lloyd over a wimpy Emil)  and I thought that there were more choices than there were in the second game. Also I didn't really enjoy the whole "monsters are your ally" bit  and the voice acting. I will agree with your points about the skits, battle system and graphics, but I still found that I was able to play the first game many times but I only played the second game once.

While I do agree that the first had more characters that were better, I think that with the lower budget with the second one, they did a great job. I finished re-playing the first one last Thursday, and started this one on Friday. I was playing with horribly overpowered characters this time around, new game+ and all that. I really do like Marta and Emil though, in my opinion they were great characters.

In the first one, you didn't have to atone for that much for what you did. I think that made me personally feel a bit disconnected from the story. I don't know how to properly explain it, but I didn't feel as connected for some reason or another. I guess the first was an overall better game, but I really like the turn the second one took in the last 3 chapters. It started off really slow, and continued that way for a while. But once we solved the Lloyd mystery, things took a drastic turn for the plot twists. But I digress, the first one had an overall more interesting story, but had a weaker ending than the second one. I'll leave it at that, as I still can't properly explain how I feel.

  17. I just finished it with the good ending, after playing through the original right before it. You know, I've gotta say, I liked the story in this one a little better than the first. I don't know, I just seemed more touched by it. Maybe because all-in-all it was a more personal story, so I cared a bit more about the characters. It was also a bit more down to earth, with a more quaint story. I really liked that; I didn't feel as overwhelmed and at a loss of control as I did in the first. Sure, it was still dealing with world-ending issues, but it felt more personal. I didn't feel as disconnected from the whole situation. Overall, I liked it more.

Oh, and the graphics, the events, and the battle system were all naturally a lot better, seeing as it's a lot newer. That may have helped pull me into the story more.

Also, the skits... Do I even need to say more? They were hilarious.

One more thing, the new voice actors replacing the ones from the first game. Lloyd's was atrocious, as was Genis'. The others were a lot less jarring, though. At least Collette had her original. And Tara Strong also came back to voice Presea. But still...

    Also:

  18. I wrote this as a class description for Morrowind, because I had nothing better to do.

Darrin has a strange obsession with Shakespearean Literature and music. This mystical man was born on June 6th 1980 to the surprise of his mother, whom was not pregnant at the time. Within 5 days, he was 188 lbs, and within 10 days, he was 5’11”.

In a mere month of his birth, he was the world champion in collecting frozen dinners. Darrin made enough money to last him a lifetime, but he threw it all at his growing love of the Flash Gordon franchise. This

gave him the nickname “Flash” and also caused an alarmingly large number of 14th century women and children to make fun of him. Darrin ran from them, he ran until he couldn’t run anymore, and then kept running. By time he got away, he had been crowned the track world champion. Darrin, with his now second newfound fortune, bought a copy of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. He loved it so much, that he commissioned a portal to be made, so he could live with all of his virtual friends. Within a year, it was completed, and he was soon saying goodbye to his family for the final time. And here we end our journey through the magical life of Darrin “Flash” Williams. Now, join him and conquer the mysterious lands of Morrowind!

I didn't intend for this to be the most well written thing, but it got me and my friends a good laugh. Also, the name and basic character traits were from a character from Betrayal at House on the Hill.

  19. I suppose I'm in a bit of a dilemma, though not really. In fact, it's really a non-issue. I'm going to see the midnight release. Now, you would probably assume I'm a huge fan, but you'd be not entirely right. I have only really seen the movies once, and not in many years. I've never even read the books. I only vaguely know the story at all, and even then I bet I'm missing huge parts.

Luckily, my family happens to own the first two and my library has the third, so I will probably watch them in preparation, so some references don't completely go over my head. Though, I bet there'll definitely be a few. I'd prefer not to be completely be in the dark, though.

And, as I seem to have been doing a lot lately, I'm not going to deliberately watch any trailers, as I think they potentially spoil too much. I only saw the trailers for Chronicle after I watched it, and I realized they would have spoiled a whole bunch. Same with The Avengers, because of the Hulk catching Iron Man. I knew that that hadn't happened yet towards the end, so I knew it was still to come, essentially spoiling it for me.

  20. The Wind Beneath Her Wings, by TAW, and Romance Reports, by SleeplessBrony. Do I need to say more? Well, I suppose I do, character limit and all... When I started reading The Wind Beneath Her Wings, the chapter after the interlude had just been released. After I read it I was so sad, I didn't know what think anymore. I soon got over it and went to read Romance Reports, since it's another one I had heard a lot about. I read, I believe, the first four chapters, before going to bed. The next day I read the entire rest of the story, for the most part in one sitting. That's when the idea of writing something of my own started floating around in my head, inception and all that. I then was re-watching some episodes of MLP, when I watched Sonic Rainboom, and thought to myself, "What would Twilight think if she actually saw the Rainboom that caused her to get her cutie mark?" Because, you know, she wasn't looking out the window when it happened, so she didn't actually see it. Not long later I started writing, and it's all history from there.

  21. I'm not quite sure... So I'll just name a few that come to mind.

In Halo: Reach, I was doing The Package on Legendary, and mind you I had been dying a lot the entire playthrough, I made it through most of the holdout part without dying once.

In Fuel, I won a race with the same amount of time as second place.

In Forza Motorsport 3, I had made a few mistakes that I didn't feel like rewinding to fix. So on the final stretch on the last lap, I'm in second place, with first in sight. I decide to go for it, and try to win it. I won. It was so close, that I went into the replay to see just how close. It turns out, he beat me by about a half-foot.

And today in Tales of Symphonia, I was doing an incredibly hard boss battle. With 10000 HP to go, I ran out of Life Bottles. It was just Lloyd (me) and Zelos for the entire last section. I just had him spam me with Lemon Gels constantly. I felt so good after I won, though.

  22. I can honestly say I didn't expect there to be anyone else who finds this same problem lol

I'm normally like that myself, but the one thing i've noticed is that there's...well, not a storyline as such, but there's a "follow on" from the previous episode. Like say, the whole theme throughout the first season, there's the underlying "story" of everyone going to the Gala, and you'll see Rarity making dresses for them and such, and getting tickets etc. Then they eventually get there. I wouldn't class that as a story, but it's nice that they reference previous episodes in that way.

Well, you could watch only the episodes regarding the Gala in order. there are only 3 or 4. I'm pretty sure they don't even mention it in other episodes.
  23. I only have that problem if there is a running storyline throughout a series. If it's episodic, with no real storyline, I can watch them in any order. Although, if I do miss one episode, I won't just stop watching the series until I see it, I'll just keep watching and try to guess what happened. And then if I get the opportunity to watch it, and I have free time, I'll watch the missed episode, and then understand a little more about the series as a whole.

  24. I like Sonic. My Mom really liked the first game in the series, so I grew up playing that one. My favorite game is Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. And my favorite character is... I don't really have one.

Also, my most hated game is Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), you can read my review of it on my profile. you can read it here: http://mlpforums.com/topic/37403-my-sonic-the-hedgehog-2006-halloween-joke-review/#entry882318
