Backstory:
<p>
Born in the quiet town of Hollow Shades, Checkered Flame had a turbulent early life. Not knowing who his real parents were, he spent most of his early years with his uncle and aunt. Often he would visit his grandfather on the weekends to avoid his uncle's malicious behavior. His uncle often drank at the local tavern and his behavior had a very negative effect towards Checkered and his aunt. At school, he was constantly picked on for simply being an earth pony. It took an effect on his grades, even though he's usually eager to learn. It was also at this time he earned his cutie mark for winning a soapbox derby race, which began his interest for racing vehicles.

<p>
One night, his uncle's drunken behavior went way over the edge, which ultimately made him decide to run away from home, as it was no longer safe for him to live. He quietly packed his belongings into a saddlebag and ran off to the train station, which would eventually take him to Ponyville. It was here he had to start his life over. He would be under the care of foster parents and he would attend school at the local elementary schoolhouse. However, the teasing didn't stop. He was still picked on by the other kids, but it didn't stop his motivation to learn. Through the years, he would help out the locals, focus on his studies, and pursue his dreams of racing in the big leagues, where now he wishes to become the best racer he can possibly be.
