• Denarius

    Nomadic

    • Age: 24

      Gender: Male

      Species: Unicorn

Appearance: A thin pony with a deep blue mane, cream body, cerulean eyes, and often sporting a sly grin. He tends to try and keep the appearance of an well-maintained pony. In addition, he often has a slicked back mane, yet despite this there are always a few strands of hair that tend to fall forwards. He prefers to keep his tail neat and orderly. His manner of dress is often relative to whatever is currently occurring around him. Preferring often to look the part for the event. Granted, he has shown a fondness for an old cloak, though clearly once an expensive piece of clothing it now appears beaten and well-worn, he proudly proclaims it a family heirloom.

Cutie Mark: A silver coin resting upon a golden laurel wreath. In addition, each side of his flank presents a different side of the coin. This is to symbolise two things. The laurels represent his past social status. Whilst the coin represents the duality of chance.

Personality: A rather charismatic individual, who's main concern is the pursuit of his own enjoyment. As a result of this, he often given to wild whims and flights of fancy. He prefers to try and exude air of confidence and friendliness whilst in public, and preferring many times to appear to be the fool of any situation belying a more subtle and clever nature. Though, often when observed closely an individual may find his speech laden with abrasive comments or with a subtle insult or two.

He has strong love of games, and often prefers to approach many situations as such. This is very much reflected in his magical abilities. He is able to influence his own luck to better suit his whims. Though luck can still be fickle, and over time he has learned from his own experiences that such abilities act merely as a buffer to his own skills. In addition, he does tend to have a strong passion for acting.

Whilst a social individual, he often views the world as a harsh place, yet it is one where the cunning will succeed. Seeing many ponies as a means to end, and often not putting much stock in another's word, this is most likely due to many of the unsavoury individuals he has been forced to interact with over time.

Backstory: Luck has always been his only constant companion. As a child of an affluent Canterlot couple, Denarius had a relatively pampered life during his younger years. He was preened and groomed from a young age to fit into his parents world. Often, the centre of attention his parents paraded him around any social gathering. His every move was judged and predetermined by his parents from the youngest of ages.

When it was finally time for him to attend schooling, he was more then excited simply due to the new sense freedom of which he had suddenly achieved. He quickly gained new friends within his class, yet despite this the strain of school and the constant high expectations from his parents began bear down upon him.

One day during a short recess, some of his friends approached him, and offered Denarius participation within a simple game of dice, yet with a twist. The losers would have to give the winner a small amount of bits. Denarius simply laughed at the preposterousness of the idea, but he soon saw that his friends were serious. With a sly grin he accepted the challenge.

Slowly, the other foals began to drop out. One by one, they disappeared from the circle. Soon, only Denarius and one other were left. This was the too be the last roll of the dice. He grew increasingly nervous beginning to doubt his chances to succeed, but suddenly his horn began to glow with a pale white light only to disappear shortly there after. The others began to stare at him with shock as nothing had actually changed. Telling them it simply didn't matter Denarius slammed the dice down onto the cobblestone. His heart began to beat slowly as the dice bounced around. Success, he had won, but only barely. Though, soon the other boy began to argue that he had cheated with his magic. Only caring about the simple taste of victory, Denarius gave the other young foal most of the prize money back in an effort to quell the argument before it truly began. As he left their little play-area, he began to ponder. Wondering if that outburst of magic really did help him win. He paused, and assured his mind that such thing was not only possible, but probable. Suddenly as he came to his conclusion, his cutie mark manifested itself with a brilliance rivalled only by his recent success.

As time began to pass, he pushed his luck ever onwards. Challenging everything he could think of. Tasting the nectar of victory, and overcoming nigh-improbable odds. Though, this is not to say all of these tests ended well. Rarely, he would come back home battered and bruised. Quickly, Denarius learned the difference from the impossible and improbable, yet he always desired to test the limits of probability.

Throughout this time, his life became more frantic. As he tried to balance both his personal exploits with the upper-class life of his parents. Hiding any injuries or exploits from the judging eyes of his parents or their inner circle. This began to cause greater and greater tension between him, and his once adoring parents.

Though fortune was not on his side on night, Denarius was rushed to the local infirmary. His parents arrived in quickly. The injury was nothing compared to some of the others he had acquired over the years, yet his parents were shocked at his sorry state. They demanded to know what in Equestria their son had been up to. After some hesitation, he told them everything. They were shocked at him. He had disregarded every lesson they had taught him, and worst of all he could of irreparably damaged the family name. They left the hospital with him, disappointed in their son.

Feeling dejected, he slowly tried to build back up their respect. He worked hard, yet he always felt now like there was a barrier now blocking his path. His rashness and overwhelming desire for his own enjoyment had damaged both him and his family, yet he still craved such impetuous things.

As he came of age, they parted ways, and shared very few tears. Clearly, they cared deeply for him, yet still had not completely forgiven his transgression, as his incident been the talk of Canterlot social circles for months upon end.

Since that day, he began drifting around Equestria pursuing and soon abandoning those new interests almost as quickly they arose. He eventually found a haven within the glittering neon paradise of Las Pegasus. In the city, he has become known as pony who can rise to the top, yet return to the gutter the next day, only to rise again. Within the walls of Las Pegasus' entertainment district many have claimed he is nothing more than a common card shark and guttersnipe, yet others have described him as a pony of strictly superior breeding and class.
