Cutie Mark: The beginning of a solar eclipse, representing his talent and training of lunar magic.
Personality: Normally, Eclipse is confident in himself and his abilities, but is aware of his limits and shortcomings. While he’s not necessarily ‘evil’ he will do what is commanded of him without question, often without showing mercy or remorse; after all, it’s foolish to go against the will of the Goddess of Night and those who do so forfeit their safety and lives. As a student, he is always willing to learn more, as long as such knowledge will be beneficial to Luna.
Eclipse is fiercely loyal to Luna, so much so that when became Nightmare Moon; Eclipse sided with her without a second thought. His loyalty is intense to the point of dependency; without Luna, he has no purpose, no reason to go on. There is no question that Eclipse has some serious issues when it comes to his relationship with Luna.

While normally, Eclipse acts with calmness and coolness; he has two triggers. One is obviously; don’t mess with Luna or you will instantly suffer his ire. The other has to do with his act of fratricide; the act of killing his brother broke Eclipse’s mind to the point where he no longer recognizes his brother as having existed at all. Mention the name of Eclipse’s brother Zenith will cause Eclipse to begin showing signs of his instability while claiming the name has no meaning to him. If confronted by an image of his brother, Eclipse will fly into a frenzy in an effort to destroy the image in question in order to protect his broken perception of reality.
Backstory: A long time ago, after the Royal Sisters imprisoned Discord, they decided to train a pair of ponies to eventually take over as rulers of Equestria as a precaution should they be unable to continue ruling the kingdom. Their search for suitable candidates eventually led them to discover a pair of unicorn brothers whom shared similarities to the princesses themselves. The princesses took the two brothers under their wings as students much in the same way Celestia would do with Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle in the future. Celestia took the older brother, Zenith, as her student; while Luna took the younger, Eclipse, as her’s.

The two brothers were apt students, and a healthy amount of sibling rivalry kept the two improving their powers at a steady rate. However, as the years passed by, it became increasing clear that Eclipse was becoming too attached to Luna, to the point where it would be a hindrance to the reason the brothers were being trained for. Celestia wanted Luna to drop Eclipse as her student but the younger princess, while aware of the problem with Eclipse, didn’t wish to abandon him solely due to that. This clash of desires between the princesses was possible one of the many reasons the led Luna to becoming Nightmare Moon.

“Am I the only one who truly appreciates her night?!”

When Luna eventually did rebel against her sister and became Nightmare Moon, Eclipse was the first to side with her. When the fateful final battle between the sisters began, Eclipse tried to be there to aid Nightmare Moon; but he was prevented from doing so by Zenith. The two brothers clashed although neither could bring themselves to truly harm the other. However; when Celestia finally used the Elements of Harmony to banish Nightmare Moon both Zenith and Eclipse were aware of the development. Unfortunately, for Eclipse, the knowledge that Nightmare Moon lost threw him into a uncontrollable rage and he attacked Zenith relentlessly, blaming him for preventing Eclipse from saving Nightmare Moon. When Eclipse finally calmed down, it was too late; he had murdered his brother in his rage. Disheartened from his act of fratricide and fearing Celestia’s retribution, Eclipse fled and went into hiding.

“I...I didn’t mean to…”

Over the years thereafter, Eclipse looked for a way to free Nightmare Moon from her imprisonment, however he was unable to find a method of doing so; but in his search he calculated just when Celestia’s imprisonment spell would weaken and falter before finally breaking. Eclipse used magic to put himself in stasis until the seal wore off. However, either Eclipse incorrectly calculated just when Nightmare Moon would break free, or something broke the imprisonment in advance.
