Appearance: Rose is a pale lavender-blue unicorn with a deep purple and light red mane. Some would call her pretty, but she doesn't like to be looked at and often hides part of her face with her wild mane.
Cutie Mark: An indigo rose. She got it when she was just a filly, when, after feeling left out at school and ostracized at home, she wandered into the Everfree forest on a whim. But she soon found herself lost, alone, and scared. As night was falling, and the moon glowing overhead, Rose began to sing a song. It comforted her, and made the darkness seem safer. Suddenly, she heard a rustling behind her. She turned to see a dark purple-blue rose slinking across the ground to her leg. She looked beyond it, and found hundreds of indigo roses, the patch spread out to a long winding path. She followed the trail of roses, and soon found herself at the very edge of the Everfree, just a short walk from her own house. It was that day that she got her cutie mark, symbolizing her love of flowers, artistic talent, amazing singing voice, and the indigo roses that heard her song and led her home.
Personality: Rose is anti-social and very shy. She likes to spend time by herself, or with the very few friends she has. She prefers to be surrounded by nature, and enjoys the company of plants, and a couple of the more quiet kinds of animals.
Rose can come off as cold or aloof, and she likes it that way. Often she pretends to be uncaring and powerful, but it's really just to hide how sensitive she is. Most think that she wouldn't lift a hoof for someone in need, but in truth, she'll always be there the second any pony needs help.
She can often be snappish if she's in a bad mood, and won't take anyone's help, refusing an unpaid debt. Though she's very calm by nature, the few times she gets angry are the times you definitely wouldn't want to be in the same room as her. Not much can awaken her rage but the harm of her friends.
Rose doesn't like to interact with ponies, and feels embarrassed in the company of outgoing ones. Even so, she likes shy ponies, and will happily spend time with them, providing they're nice and don't talk much.
Rose might be a tough pony to hang out with, but she will risk it all for her friends. To the few ponies she's loyal to in this world, she would do anything to keep them safe and happy.
Backstory: Rose's family goes very far back. Her father, Briar Thorn, is from Canterlot, and a long line of noble unicorn blood. But being the youngest of four brothers, he never cared much for aristocracy, and preferred painting instead. Rose gets her humble demeanor and love of the arts from him.
But Rose's mother, an earth pony named Midnight Sky, is from an entirely different line. The Midnight family has lived in Ponyville for as long as anyone can remember, and they remember quite far back, seeing as the Midnights were very high up in the court of Princess Luna, when the two sisters lived in their castle in the Everfree. But after Luna was banished to the moon, the family was disgraced. They faded to the outskirts of society, still upholding their old customs and traditions. However, when Luna returned and once more became a princess, Ponyville's attitude to the family changed. They no longer laughed at, but feared them and their remaining power in Luna's court. Rose is now part of that family, or at least she will be when she completes the traditional rite of passage on her eighteenth birthday.
