Midnight Shade
By Hurricane
Age: around 16
Gender: Female
Species: Non-Pony
Appearance: Midnight Shade is a thin, average height bat pony. She has a dark grey coat and a lion like tail. Her mane and the tip of her tail or a dark violet that fades to navy blue. She has orange-yellow, fiery eyes that seem to always have a special spark in them.
Cutie Mark: Her cutie mark is a cresent moon with a paw print in the center. It symbolizes her ability to connect and communicate with strange, mysterious animals that ponies are usually afraid of like vampire fruit bats or timber wolves, etc. She got her cutie mark when her family took a trip into Ponyville just to check out the area since it’s so close to Cloudsdale. As they were heading toward the town, Midnight looked at the Everfree and felt that she absolutely had to go in. She let her curiosity get the best of her and when her parents weren’t looking, she slipped away.
After walking for a couple minutes, she noticed a little winged creature trembling on the ground. She scooped it up in her hoof and carefully examined the creature. It was a baby vampire fruit bat. “You’re not like any fruit bat I’ve seen before” Midnight said. The helpless bat cocked it’s at Midnight. He had never seen a pony like that before. “It’s ok,” the filly smiled and showed her little fangs. “I’m different too.” The bat gave a small smile back also showing it’s not yet fully developed fangs. Midnight looked around to find a cave where it might have come from, but the caves she saw were empty. “I’m sorry little fella.” She said. “I’ll keep trying to find your family.” Then, the baby vampire fruit bat crawled into Midnight’s mane and nestled itself in. “Do you really wanna stay with me?” She asked with glee. The animal nodded. “Ok, we can be different together.” She smiled. Just then, her parents came flying toward her with obvious worried/relived faces. Shade showed them the bat and told them the whole story. After she finished, her parents smiled and pointed at her brand new cutie mark. Midnight then hopped around with glee and took her new friend home.
Personality: Midnight Shade is playful, yet mysterious. She can look like she is saying one thing, when she really means something else which makes her really good at manipulation. She also does well at hiding her true emotions and doesn’t always tell ponies the full truth or story. She loves to play jokes on ponies and is always making sarcastic remarks. She is spunky, curious and adventurous. She has no hesitation to try something new. Shade is also really fun and bubbly and loves to play around.
Backstory: Midnight Shade was born to two bat ponies. The two were living in a cave far from any heavily populated cities. They lived alone in secret for fear of being judged and mocked by society. When they found out there going to have a foal, they were so excited, but also nervous. They knew their little filly needed to grow up in the proper environment. The woods wasn’t the best place to learn and be social. Finally, when Midnight Shade was born, her parents were shocked to see a lion tail on the little batpony. They had no idea what would have caused the defect until, after some digging, they found out that there were some griffins in the family history. They were amazed at their little lion-tailed filly.
The family kept planning on moving to Cloudsdale, but kept pushing it back for fear of their daughter being bullied or the whole family being shunned by society. They continued to live in solitude in the forest until the parents realized that it was time for Midnight to go to school. The family finally made the move to Cloudsdale and enrolled Midnight Shade into the school there. They taught the basics, but also taught flight lessons. When the family settled into their new home, they got a lot of stares, but were eventually accepted by the city. Shade didn’t know what to expect from school. The place was so different than their cave back home.
Midnight Shade felt out of place from the start and school just made it worse. All the little fillies and colts were either afraid of her, or made fun of her. She had been told so many times that she didn’t belong in society and she began to believe it. She always sat alone at lunch and recess. She wanted to play with the other ponies so badly. One day, she figured that she would try to talk to some of the foals. The reactions were nothing like what she wanted. Ponies either ran away, rejected her, or made fun of her. This crushed Midnight. Now, whenever she went to school, she hid her true, happy self and always walked around with her tail down and head hung low and tried to be as invisible as she felt. Her parents eventually realized that their daughter was unhappy at the school she was at. When she was around thirteen, she moved to a school for ponies around her age with a more advanced flight course.
The students at her new school were much nicer and more welcoming. In class, Midnight always sat in the back away from everypony. She didn’t participate in any games or parties. She wanted to, but she was afraid she would be judged and rejected by everypony. She didn’t dislike any of the ponies, she was just afraid of what they would think if she showed her true self. When she was alone at lunch, she happily frolicked in the field and chased bugs around, but only when she knew nopony was watching her.
When Midnight Shade was old enough to leave Cloudsdale, she decided to venture out to the outskirts of Ponyville where she began to come out her shell, but only a little. Now, she lives near the everfree and ventures into Ponyville every so often.
