Backstory: Born Star Spangle, he joined the junior fliers at an early age, and scouted down to the surface often when looking for towns to provide water to Cloudsdale to fuel their cloud making apparatus. He always saw himself as a happy Pegasus, free and in the clouds until he was grounded by the harshness of other kids in regard to his shiny diamond studded attire. They called him bad names, but it wasn't until a couple of them robbed him of his uniform while he was flying around in a wonderbolt costume he finally broke down and cried over it. That was when he started to read stories of life on the ground, and make up his own stories about fictional characters that lived amongst the stars, exploring other planets, and even the face of the moon despite the fact it was where Nightmare Moon lived.

Star tried to get the books and stories published, but his parents and friends mocked him, saying he wasted his time on pointless endeavours, and asked "is there any benefit to Cloudsdale from your work?", "What does that do to young Pegasi in Cloudsdale? Does it not confuse them about life here?", "Will you mislead Pegasi about the moon? It is not a place to visit, it is where a Nightmare Lives!". Star Spangle felt like he could understand how Luna felt, where even friends and family wanted her to stop what she was becoming. Whereas he felt the same darkness drop onto his soul, he decided to drop his ambitions and pull away, at least for a time, adopting the nickname Moonlight instead of Star, as he tried to distance himself from the radiance of Celestia, even if his own name.

Fearing the public eye, Moonlight Spangle started to hang out with Pegasi that felt "different", some rather "Bad Apples", and spent more time laid back, less time at work, until he was late often enough he was fired. His family was furious, and before they could make things right, he decided to leave. He beckoned to his newly made friends to follow, but they stayed, since they had family and jobs. Since he was an only Foal, he felt he left nothing he loved behind, and made a fateful decision.

Feeling ostracized by everyone he knew up in Cloudsdale, and not having his cutie mark by age 22, he decided to leave everything and flee to the surface. Moonlight flew too fast as he dived towards the earth, his eagerness blinding his sense of self preservation. He closed his eyes bracing for impact, realizing he might die, and indeed he almost died in the crash, but when he awoke he found himself awoke by a bright light, and he stared up at the moonlight, piercing down through the treetops to where he lay in the leaves and tanglebrush, deep in the Everfree forest. He tried to fly, but found himself unable to do so due to a broken wing, as he tumbled down the hill and landed in a stream. He looked down at his reflection, and saw even his prized scout outfit, that he had worn even when fleeing Cloudsdale was covered in mud and gunk. He decided to cast it away, and felt that tumble had taught him something, adopting Tumble as his secondary name as he looked up at the moon and started to silently sob to himself for a few minutes, invoking Luna to aid him in his time of hopelessness, even as he realized how foalish he sounded.

It took him a few minutes before he decided he had to build shelter so that he would survive, and perhaps if the pegasi looked for him they would find him where he crashed, knowing the chanes of surviving in Everfree Forest for long, were slim to none. He used his scout training and built a shelter there in the woods, and over the next few weeks, set his wing as best as he could and explored farther and farther during the day. At first he was hoping to have a Pegasi patrol rescue him, but then he resented their "help" not wanting to be put back to his subservient role. He had tasted true freedom, and loved it!

Moonlight realized the importance of keeping track of things, but didn't do a good job organizing it. His home quickly filled with many scrolls of Papyrus, which he started making after he found Froggy Bottom Bogg. Those scrolls would go through all manner of organizational ideas, and eventually end up piles and piles of disorganized, but dated entries regarding his discoveries and encounters with the creatures of the Everfree Forest. His wing started to heal, but unless he found a source of more advanced healing, akin to civilization, he was not going to survive forever. Eventually he would be too slow, and he would die here alone, he resolved to find a way out of Everfree forest, but not take unnecessary risks.

It wasn't until 4 years later, a typical day of exploration, he decided to pack up his bags and leave his now very nice home in the Everfree forest, and head outwards. He pulled out his scroll and paused, checking markings on trees, droppings on animal trails, and stream crossings to continue to expand his map of the forest, and update it, when a change occured. He reached back, and rubbed his chest, the scar hurting a bit, and he remembered the painful encounter last year with a Timberwolf that gave him that scar. During the years he had gained quite a few scars, one on his back right leg, 3 on his chest, and one on his front left hoof, but otherwise he lost nothing to his adventures in the Everfree forest, at least physically. He walked along cloaked, with a large backpack, and wearing a makeshift spear attached to his barding made from leather. It was then, he cleared Everfree forest, and saw a place he had never heard of... Ponyville. Hopefully this Ponyville would have the medical attention he needed, and despite the years, heal his injured wing.
