Osseous "Bones"
By Klopp
Age: 33
Gender: Male
Species: Unicorn
Appearance: Osseous is a Unicorn with a bone-white coat, with a well-kept light blond mane and tail. He is fairly tall with an average build. He is always wearing a necklace, made of a thick brown leather band, holding a small relic which is a circular piece of bone, hollowed and smoothed with a brilliant ruby embedded within.
Cutie Mark: His Cutie Mark matches the relic on his necklace. A round piece of polished white bone with a ruby in the center. It represents the moment he discovered his special talent, and found his cherished relic.
Personality: Osseous can easily be described in one word; Adventurous.

He is always looking for a new thrill, wanting to travel to every corner of the world to do so. Every since a young age he always wanted to explore, discovering new places and fascinated new things, however, his main drive is when he can get his hooves on some very OLD things... or more specifically, digging them out of the ground. His passion, and more importantly, his talent, are finding remains of ancient civilizations from times long before Equestria was founded, and learning of the lives of creatures in the past.

He absolutely loves ancient history, especially cultures and/or species that vastly differ from what is seen in the modern day Equestria. This goes hand-in-hand with his yearning for adventure, as he can go exploring places seen by few, while digging for remnants of the ancient past.

When it comes to any form of relationships, Osseous is completely ignorant. Due to the fact that his parents, Gray Matter and Philleas Files, were constantly working, and had little to no time to spend with him. he didn't quite learn how to interact with anyone other than the one whom his parents appointed as his caregiver, Sunflower. Whom he became rather close with, but she was but one out of many he would easily interact with. Because of this, he grew to be mostly uncaring towards others. Not particularly unfriendly, just generally emotionless for the most part.

His general uncaring became worse after he came up with the theory he believes in called "Versatile Species Adaptation", and received much criticism for his beliefs from closed minded individuals who thought these ideas were ridiculous and unrealistic. However, he believed in Versatile Species Adaptation wholeheartedly, and with so many bashing him for this he became more selfish, to the point where he now avoids confrontation with anyone about nearly any subject.

However he does not wish to remain completely unsocial, and at least tries to remain friendly with everyone he meets. However, with his bad experiences in the past it is difficult for him to make any friends at all. They step out of line once, making a slight comment which he finds to be offensive, and he usually refuses to associate with that person completely.

One distinct personality flaw is that he hates his own name. Osseous sounds so silly and odd, he always ensures people call him by his Nickname, "Bones".
Backstory: Gray Matter was a brain surgeon, and the top in his field. Phileas Files was a well respected pediatrician, one of the best the Canterlot hospital had to offer. Both were a pair of very well known doctors, ranked as two of the top medical experts in all of Equestria, and an extremely busy pair. So busy it's a wonder the two ever got hooked up and had themselves a little Colt, but to everyone's surprise, they did.

Osseous was the name given to their son, named from the tissue found in bones that both the doctors had seen far too many of in their days. They did this because their son's coat was a perfect match for the color of bone. Little did they know that it would also eventually define his entire life.

Since his parents were quite possibly the busiest pair in Canterlot, they did not have any time at all to spend on Osseous. Instead, being the wealthy family they are, they hired a full-time caretaker to look after him. It was not difficult for Osseous' mother, Phileas Files, to find one either, since she came across all sorts of the best caregivers as a pediatrician. She asked one foalsitter she had seen often, Sunflower, to take care of him full-time at an extremely generous price. She accepted without hesitation, and simply moved into their home for convenience.

Sunflower and Osseous got along very well right from the start, and she continued to be his caretaker until he eventually set off on his own, but we shall get to that later on in the story.

Since a very young age, Osseous was a heavy reader. His favorite books were anything full of excitement and adventure, the chronicles of Daring-Do being one of his top favorites series. And since he was able to read these books, he looked forward to a time when he could have his own adventures.

This was not all he read though, far from it. Apart from daring novels, he was also very much into Equestrian history. Learning of the past, from creatures, cultures, and beliefs to ancient wars and conquests. Everything he read about the past got him excited, and he only wished he could learn more.

At the age of five, Osseous had already made up his mind what he wanted to do, and that was to go on many adventures! "Explore Equestria, see all the corners of the world, and escape from all the danger I would encounter along the way!" That's what he told his caretaker, Sunflower, and she always gave him a hug and said to him "You're too young to go on an adventure right now. But you will when you get older, I just know you will!" This always made Osseous smile as he hugged her back and thought about his great adventures.

Apart from Sunflower, Osseous did not interact much with anypony. At school he would sit in the back, either fantasizing about traveling through a harsh jungle, or silently reading about Daring-Do's dangerous adventures. To put things simply, he was a loner. He never learned to cooperate well with others, not even his parents as they were always busy with their jobs. No, Sunflower was his one and only friend, and the only one he could speak with openly.

One day, when Osseous was 16 years old, he was reading up on Equestrian history, and came across something that piqued his interest. Way up in the Frozen North, there used to be a unicorn, known as the Frozen King, who ruled the land with his ferocious Ice powers. He was a ruthless leader, and would freeze anyone in ice who tried to overthrow his rule, keeping his victims locked in "The Frozen Hallway", which is said to be like a museum of frozen ponies. The hallway was also the Frozen Kings tomb, and no pony had ever found his final resting place.

He had made a decision that this was to be his first adventure, to find the Frozen hallway and the tomb of the Frozen King. He told Sunflower of this story, and she told him that it was probably just a story, and there was no Frozen King. He refused to believe it, and moved decided to go ahead with his plans anyways.

Osseous decided he had had enough of just waiting around, and took action to go off on his adventure on his own. He researched in the library and discovered that there was a mine in the Frozen North where ponies dug for high-quality rubies underground. Apparently they were in abundance in that area. He decided this was as good a place as any to head for his adventures, and luckily there was a train that went straight there.

By this time, Sunflower had become more of a house-keeper than a caretaker, as Osseous could fend for himself just fine at the age of 16.One night, when Sunflower was asleep, and his parents were off doing their jobs late at night, he snuck out and left a note for sunflower explaining where he was going that said the following.

"Dear Sunflower.

I've gone up to the frozen north in order to find the Frozen Hallway. I know you think it's just a story, but I believe that it exists, and I'm going to find it! I don't know how long I will be gone, but I promise to return home safely.

Take care!
Osseous"

After leaving, he went to the train station and got aboard the first ride to Vanhoover, where the train await to take anypony who desired to the mine in the Frozen North. When he arrived in Vanhoover, he asked the station master there when the next train was to the ruby mine in the Frozen North, and a nearby stallion overheard and asked him why he wanted to go to the mine. He explained why, and the stallion laughed saying, "You don't actually believe in those silly stories, do you?" Osseous didn't know what to say, but he was furious that someone would make fun of him like this. The man then told him, "Look, if you have your heart set on going to the mine, I'll help you get there, but you have to do some work to get us some rubies." Come to find out, this stallion was the head of mining operation, Ruby Diggs, and the next train was due to leave in just a few hours. Osseous accepted, and the two boarded the train that night.

Once they arrived, Osseous was frozen stiff. He was supplied with a warm winter coat, but the freezing temperatures was almost too much for him to bare. Luckily once he got underground the temperature was a bit higher. Not much, but enough to keep him from freezing his tail off. He pressed on, searching around the mine when he had the time for the Frozen Hallway. He had to prove that the stories were true. He helped with mining operations for a while, and after many months of hard labor, something strange suddenly happened. His horn began to glow, and it seemed to take control of him, pulling him away from the mine, and eventually he bumped into a wall of ice, covering what appeared to be a cave. He hit the ice with such force that it began to crack, slowly at first, but continued to spread faster until the wall just shattered to reveal a passageway.

Osseous was about to walk into the cave... but instead he was dragged again by his horn. His horn pulled him through the passageway, he didn't even bother trying to stop it, until he came into a large hallway, covered in ice, with statues of frozen ponies, in various scared-to-death poses, lined up on each side of the hallway. The room lit up by a multitude of torches placed between all the frozen ponies. He continued to be dragged along until his horn stopped in front of a frozen pony at the end of the hallway. A very large, menacing looking stallion wearing a glorious crown imbedded with many rubies, and wearing a necklace with a thick brown leather strap, holding a small round piece of stone with the brightest red ruby he had ever seen imbedded in the center.

After he finally came to a halt, his horn continued to glow, but instead of dragging him around it's magic took hold of the relic around this pony's neck, who MUST have been the Frozen King, and levitated it up and gently placed the necklace around the neck of Osseous, and he had no control over it doing so.

Once Osseous finally came to realize what had just happened, he ran, slipped all over the place, but eventually made his way back out and to the mine. He went straight to Ruby Diggs to tell him of his discover, and showed him the relic he discovered. Diggs pointed out that he had a cutie mark now as well, and it looked exactly like his necklace. He showed him the hallway, was glad to have prove him wrong, and Diggs was dumbfounded and shocked at what was before his eyes.

The two got out of there and got word to Historians in Canterlot, who arrived as quickly as they could, and commended Osseous for this great discovery. Didn't take long for Osseous to find out that his horn was attracted to the bone that the relic he found was made of. Come to find out his special talent is that he can detect and find nearby bones, which quickly got him the nickname "Bones" Amongst those who knew him.

Bones cam home to his parents and Sunflower, his parents were more upset that they had to miss out on important work because of him, but Sunflower was glad to see him back home. She hugged him tightly and cried a bit, telling him never to go on an adventure by himself like that again.

He went on to become a very well known paleontologist and historian, and got to have his dream of traveling the world to go on adventures in places nopony would normally be seen. With his special ability, he began discovering many types of bones belonging to many types of species. His profession also came with a lot of wealth, but he didn't care about that. He just bought himself a modest home in Canterlot, which he rarely sleeps in anyways since he is always off on his digs for more pre-Equestrian bones.

In addition to all this, he kept reading up on equestrian history, and at the age of 21 came across a strange theory called "Versatile Species Adaptation", devised by a stallion by the name of Beagle Finch. Basically this stated that all species change over time by adapting to their surrounding environment, and that all living species now probably came from one common ancestor.

From Bones' point of view, this made perfect sense, as he had now seen so many different types of bones from the past that it made perfect sense to him. However, when he decided to publicly agree with Beagle Finch's theory, he got quite a lot of flak for it, and that is something he didn't like at all. Many closed-minded ponies didn't seem to like the thought of versatile species adaptation, and they liked to throw many insults in his direction for it. He became rather cold-hearted for the most part, and became distant to most people.

One day, he came home from an important dig with an invitation to some party being thrown. He wasn't particularly interested in going, but had a chat with Sunflower and she insisted he go and try to make some friends. He went ahead and took her advice, going to the party at the appointed time, and tried to be a bit more open with everypony there. It probably wouldn't work out, but he had to try for Sunflower.
