• Spell Smith

    geemili

    • Age: 20

      Gender: Male

      Species: Earth Pony

Cutie Mark: A square with a spiral made of straight lines in it, in front of a star.

The straight lines are used to represent a algorithmic approach to things, and the star represents magic.

So, his cutie mark means that he can understand how spells function.

Personality: Spell Smith is an earth pony looking to prove himself. He tries to do everything himself, often getting himself into trouble when he wanders into topics he doesn't understand.

Backstory: When Spell Smith was twelve, his family moved to Ponyville from Trottingham. Smith had trouble making new friends, instead retreating to books. He became fascinated with the unicorn wizards from his novels, and one day, started reading "An Introduction to Unicorn Magic."

The book made no sense. He asked the librarian, a unicorn, to help him understand.

All that she said was, "You have to be a unicorn to understand."

So, Smith checked out the book. He read it from end to end and took notes on what he could understand. When the book yielded no more answers, he moved onto a new book.

He was determined to prove that he could be like one of the epic wizards in the books.

Little by little, he gained understanding of magic. He doodled spellforms in his notebook. And yet his understanding never felt complete. The librarian was right. Spells were just for unicorns.

After a particularly long day at school, Smith sat in a study group. One unicorn filly was having difficulty with her magic. Her horn would shine brilliant purple for a second, but then fizzle out, as the pencil that she was presumably trying to lift stayed stubbornly where it was.

"You're doing it wrong." Smith clapped his hooves over his mouth as he realized that he had said the words. What was he thinking!

The filly scowled at him. "What would you know?"

"I... Uh... Well, you're imaging it like you're trying to pick it up with your mouth, right?" Sweat appeared on Smith's brow.

"Yeah! Kind of. But what does that have to do with anything?"

"Well, uh, I don't really know, but I think that you need to imagine something... simpler."

"Simpler?"

"Yeah, like, uh, a piece of paper. Yeah! Like a curled piece of paper!" Smith made a curved motion with his hooves. "It reduces the amount of power required. I think."

The filly looked at him with distrust. "Okay." Once again her horn grew brighter. This time, it didn't shine out like a lightbulb, but a glow still formed around the pencil.

It lifted off the table.

That day was the happiest day in Spell Smith's life. He had earned his cutie mark.
