Appearance: A quite tall, greenish-blue bat pony with sapphire eyes and dark blue wings. His hair is a bleached white. He usually wears a pair of goggles, but is also known to wear a trench coat or lab coat from time to time.

Cutie Mark: Umbral's cutie mark is a heart with a scalpel in the foreground. This signifies his special talents in the medical arts, in particular surgery. He is particularly skilled at operating, but is also efficient in treating wounds, or curing illness.

Personality: Umbral is a quiet, thoughtful bat pony, preferring to stop and think about a problem rather than rushing headfirst into things. He is, however, very talkative around people he considers friends, verging on hyperactive sometimes. Umbral is also very kind, always eager to help another pony, or try cheer them up.<br /><br />In spite of this, he is a very sensitive pony, and can easily have his feelings hurt. His past history has made him wary of others, but deep down he is lonely after years of near-total isolation. While slow to anger, once he gets upset, he really snaps! He has a wild, slightly maniacal side, which he rarely shows, as he prefers to keep his kookiness to his lab work.

Backstory: Umbral was born and grew up in Canterlot, the son of a stallion in Luna's Royal guard. From a young age, he wanted to become a doctor, eager to make others happy through curing them and showing them kindness.<br /><br />However, he became a hated figure, after some of the young ponies in Canterlot Academy decided to spread the rumour that he was a vampire-batpony who drank the blood of other ponies. Soon, the rumour spread to such an extent that he became an outcast at the Academy. <br /><br />A few years of torment later, Umbral could no longer face the pain, and ran away from home, finding refugee far away in the Everfree forest. Finding the ruins of an old watchtower, he began to make himself a new home, and with it a new life. <br /><br />At night, he would sneak out and steal books and equipment from nearby towns, in order to self-educate himself in the medical arts. He practiced surgery on injured woodland creatures in Everfree forest, and it was not long til he received his cutie mark as a result.<br /><br />However, the years of isolation caused to become slightly eccentric, often causing him to talk to himself, as well as his hair turning from its original blue colour to a bleached white.<br /><br />He still ventures out every night to gather more resources and books, hoping deep down that someday he'll meet ponies without a prejudice towards him; ponies he could call friends.
