Particular piece of music I'm looking for...

There's a particular piece of underscore in the show that I really like hearing. It seems to get recycled every now and then - I've come across three variations of this theme so far and all of them are different (they all play around Rainbow Dash as well).

Two of these variations play in the Mysterious Mare Do Well episode. The first variation is at a slower tempo from 5:53 to 6:20:

The second (which I believe is the "normal" version) plays at the 17-minute mark:

Variation 3, heard in Hurricane Fluttershy, has an added snare percussion line:

Are there any other variations of this theme that I'm missing?

Well if you want to look for more of a musical phrase like this one, you should try finding segments of the show involving a sense of guts, competition, or pride. Maybe try "May the Best Pet Win" or "Fallweather Friends"?

In terms of similarity to classical pieces, it sounds like Mr. Anderson did a modified rendition of "No. 1. Marche (Entrance of King Florestan and Court)" from Tchaikovsky's ballet Sleeping Beauty. If you like that music, I suggest looking up the original, as well as soundtracks by Ron Goodwin. He does a lot of that awesome heroic stuff, especially with his theme to the film Battle of Britain.

Could you help me find that exact classical piece you mentioned? I tried a bunch of searches on YouTube and I'm not finding a video for that exact segment nor can I hear the similarity...

I'm a film score fanatic though! Film Score Monthly released a few limited edition CDs by Ron Goodwin. I should buy them one of these days...

The 3:36 mark.

It's amazing how different conductors will play the same piece. This one is playing it slow-to-normal. Notice the subtle similarity? It's not a carbon copy of the piece from the show, as Anderson's stuff it mostly original, except for like Wagner's Ride of the Valkyrie in May the Best Pet Win. We really need an official release of the show's soundtrack really bad!

Yeah Ron Goodwin for sure. It seems that the 1960's were the heyday of epic soundtracks, along with the movies that accompanied them. Jerry Goldsmith, Dimitri Tiomkin, Maurice Jarre, Miklós Rózsa...purely epic.

I've been loving Wojciech Kilar's stuff lately (he did Dracula from 1992 and The Ninth Gate). Really moody stuff.

Let me know what you are looking for and I will point you in the right direction. Edited by Party Cannon

Pardon my late response, I admit I really neglect checking the boards at times and I'm even worse at responding to posts.

I kind of hear the similarity, though it's... not really that similar, if that makes any sense.

Will Anderson mentioned in his panel at EQLA that the show's directors (Jayson Thiessen & James Wootton) asked him to use Ride of the Valkyries for that specific scene. Using Bridal Chorus for the Canterlot Wedding episodes is a no-brainer there. I extract the show's score and post it on YouTube, actually - you're more than welcome to check out what I do here:

I've got plenty on my hands already, but thank you. :) I know all of those names and I have several hundred soundtrack CDs in my collection, a mix of commercial releases and limited editions from record labels like Varese Sarabande, La-La Land, Intrada, Kritzerland, etc. I really need to catch up on my listening sometime, though.
