Night Shine 767 February 2, 2014 Share February 2, 2014 (edited) Hey, everypony! :3 I am trying to develop a chart or system to classify music, similar to the Genre system but based in definite emotions which any given piece of music inspires. Please note that this isn't made to classify a piece of music itself based on emotions it inspires, due to the subjectivity of that, but rather the emotions that the music inspires within each person. Here are the Moods that I have classified so far, and several examples of songs that evoke those Moods in me beneath to explain what each Mood is: 1) Fun 2) Relaxing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3H0keP_bhEE 3) Sad Feels 4) Happy Feels http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOFA9rr5S24 5) Dark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6Yn7WMxPgI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8yfix33vA8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMnX2QCBFrA 6) Epic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzwT-miP2Kg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bna9R11cBHQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYn_o6bTPuw So anyway, I am currently trying, and struggling, to create a complete and accurate chart or graph upon which I could pinpoint the Mood evoked by any particular song. Preferably, such a chart would be a two-axis graph wherein each Mood would be dichotomous with another one, or the mid-range of two other Moods. I've already been through the process of checking which Moods can overlap with others and which cannot, which is essential for creating such a graph: If any examples of these overlapping Moods are needed, I can provide them, but I won't list examples for every song with multiple Moods right now because that seems like it would take too long. So with this information, I tried to start building a chart only to run into many difficulties. Here's my idea so far of an organizational chart: X-AXIS: Fun<-->Happy Feels<-->Sad Feels Y-AXIS: Relaxing<-->Dark<-->Epic However, this model doesn't seem to work perfectly. Can anypony help me out here with creating a working model to describe the complete range of emotional moods invoked by any and all pieces of music? EDIT: Come to think of it, maybe it's a three dimensional thing with X=Epic<-->Relaxing, Y=Sad Feels<-->Fun, and Z=Dark<-->Happy Feels. GhostPony750 959 February 2, 2014 Share February 2, 2014 (edited) Oh well, it's going to be a difficult task! o_O Sometimes, the mood change in a song, and some songs are going to be heavily hard to classify. But I guess you could add anger, and maybe depressing - energic. I used to be a stranger 7,993 February 2, 2014 Share February 2, 2014 (edited) Do also realize that there has long been a system of emotional inflections by which to play a piece, in addition to the traditional tempo markings given by the composer, or the conductor. Any peice, on top of the notes, can be played happily, angrily or whatever, if the musician wishes to have it performed such. This is a piece with the instruction to be played "Fuoco", which is Italian for "with Fire"; play the instrument with the intensity, vividity and passion of the flame. This is a piece to be played "Scherzando", which is Italian for "playfully"; it is related to "Scherzo" which means "joking". The song itself however is not a Classical piece, but a March. This is being played "Allegro Vivace", which means both "Quickly" and "Lively".
