Inspiration Manifestation, and my concerns with Rarity

To be perfectly honest, I don't really develop my own opinions, so instead I rely on other people's opinions. But, if I could develop any opinion I want about the recent episode, it's that it was "meh". It's not a bad episode, it's just it's average. And the reason it's average is because it's Spike trying to be useful, but in the process creating more problems.

Usually, Spike episodes are mediocre, because no one like myself cares about Spike. He's just the useless sidekick who's either seen as selfish and spoiled, or trying so hard to be useful that he ends up being useless and disposable. I also don't care about the Cutie Mark Crusaders, because like Spike, they're also sidekicks who aren't as good as the Mane Six themselves.

But really, what got on my nerves about this episode is that it's all through Spike's perspective, and it's Spike who learned a valuable lesson, this time about honesty. Even though Rarity had an important part to play, she was not the main perspective character, and that's what I noticed in S4. She was also not the main perspective character in "For Whom the Sweetie Belle Tolls", because that was meant to be a Sweetie Belle episode. Meanwhile, Applejack took up entire episodes she shared with Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Sweetie Belle, and even Rarity herself, upstaging the fashion pony even when she had pivotal roles in "For Whom the Sweetie Belle Tolls" and "Inspiration Manifestation".

And, to be perfectly honest, aside from wanting equal focus between the Mane Six, I'm also a Rarity fan, because she seems to be the most neglected member of the Mane Six. Seriously, if you thought Applejack was a background pony, you haven't seen nothing yet. She received no episode of her own in Season Three; the writers considered making "Spike At Your Service" a Rarity episode, but she was too mean and manipulative to Spike, so that went to Applejack. Meanwhile, in the comics, even though she received more focus in the "Nightmare Rarity" arc than she did in S3, she was technically a damsel-in-distress designed to motivate her friends into defeating the Nightmare Forces controlling her. And now, we have a second Pinkie Pie issue in the "Friends Forever" mini-series, when we could've just as easily gotten one featuring Rarity.

Granted, I did talk to some of the writers of the MLP Friends Forever series. The few who did respond to me eventually said that they either considered a Rarity Friends Forever issue, or already pitched one. In a way, they haven't forgotten Rarity, but it still doesn't excuse the complete lack of a Rarity Friends Forever issue, while Pinkie Pie gets a second issue of her own, which she will share with Luna.

I know it sounds like I'm criticizing a problem with the entire series that, to most of you, doesn't seem to exist, as opposed to the recent episode. But you know what? I might as well be! Rarity is best pony because she's the underdog, and I always root for the underdog!

Rarity is the best pony because she's giving, strong willed, passionate, caring, creative, and a relatable character (to me, at least). Why the fandom decides to attempt to sling so much dung onto her beautiful white coat is just beyond me, but also pretty pathetic.

The reasons given for hating her usually aren't very good - nay - they're never good; it's usually stuff like "She's into fashion and I'm not" or "she screwed up one time so I'm just going to forget every good thing she's done ever" or my favorite one, "She's shallow and I don't like her because of her voice." >_>

Rarity fans are no longer passively taking the beating, fortunately. She's a wonderful pony, and she doesn't deserve the repulsive treatment she receives by some of the members of the fandom.

Also, Rarity was under a spell this whole episode. Can't really fault her for her behavior.

Damn, just having to see what the fandom has done to the Rarity fanbase by constantly hating on her in the past ignites a fire inside of me...

Actually, this isn't about the fandom so much as it is about the writers of the show as well as the comics, as well as their unintentional disregard for Rarity.  Somehow, writing Rarity is so difficult for the comic and show writers, most likely because she has to be seen as generous and compassionate, but at the same time vain and materialistic.  This was why they couldn't make "Spike At Your Service" a Rarity episode, because they had no idea how to write her without making her look mean or manipulative.

Another, most likely reason is because there are six members of the main cast, and writing for all of them can be difficult.  As a result, it's easy to focus on at least some of the characters, while unintentionally forgetting about others.  This was a part of Dragon Ball Z, Bleach, and Naruto's downfalls as well; they had a large supporting cast, but could only focus on either one or two characters at a time, e.g. Goku and Vegeta, Naruto and Sasuke, and Ichigo Kurowsaki and the Gotei 13.  As a result, many of the other characters fall behind in-terms of character focus.

And that bothers me.

Spike actually has the same problem. He has to be kind, supportive, and somewhat confident, yet immature and insecure. Their own personality traits combat each other, so him and Rarity are most likely hell to write for, but Spike is far from useless. He saved the Crystal Empire, help Twilight snap out of her psychosis, saved RD and Pinkie from the buffalo, was a supportive guide to Twilight in the human world, etc. There is another issue however.

As I said he's a child by himself so while the CMC help cover each other's weaknesses Spike has to rely solely on himself most of the time (partially due to his own insecurities as well). You see, like Twi he didn't understand friendship, but unlike her he's not a fast learner and is usually sidelined from the Mane 6. Twi had a lot of time to learn and learns faster, so while she was being coronated for her mastery of friendship, he was left not fully understanding even the basics of what friendship entails (supported further by the moral of this episode).

Also Rarity has had A LOT of screentime this season, so no I don't think that problem exists anymore. It definitely was a problem last season, though.

How so?  The majority of people I saw on the Internet kept calling it just a Spike episode more often than a Spike/Rarity or "Sparity" episode.  Plus, "For Whom the Sweetie Belle Tolls" was through Sweetie Belle's perspective, despite the heavy focus on her relationship to her elder sister, Rarity.

If we ignore supporting roles (which imo makes zero sense) she was still a focal point of:

Rarity Takes Manehattan

Castle Mane-ia

Simple Ways

Trade Ya!

Maud Pie

Filli Vanilli (integral to plot, a lot of screentime)

Inspiration Manifestation (same as above)

For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils (ditto again)

If you add on support roles:

Princess Twilight Sparkle

Daring Don't

Power Ponies

Bats!

Rainbow Falls

Three's a Crowd

It Ain't Easy Being Breezies

Testing Testing 1, 2, 3

(presumably)The S4 Finale

With all that said, I don't see it.

I'd like to believe that "For Whom the Sweetie Belle Tolls" could've been part of the top list rather than the bottom one.

I didn't know if you'd agree with that, but yea it probably should.
