Thoughts on: the Reliability of the Epiglottis
Just wondering, does anyone else have the problem of their epiglottis being unreliable? As in, you'll swallow something (on purpose or accidentally), but it'll end up going down the wrong tube? I find that happening to myself all the time, mostly with hot liquids such as coffee, or my own saliva. In fact, I rarely drink hot liquids anymore for that specific reason; high likelihood I'll choke on it. I dunno, it just seems like a "You had ONE job!" moment on the part of the epiglottis.
For those of you wondering, the epiglottis is a small flap of tissue that covers the trachea (windpipe) when you swallow to send the material to the stomach, as opposed to the lungs. Here's a diagram:
Its SOLE purpose is to close off the trachea when you swallow. You'd think it could do it right!
