Sometimes Mortality is Confusing.

Sometimes I sit and think about morality, and one quote springs to mind:

"It's not that simple. We are all both, good and evil, we have rage and compassion, we have love and hate...murder and forgiveness. Why don't you try forgiving yourself for a change."

It's background within the work(Highlander) is interesting. It's spoken by Methos to Duncan when his honor gets in the way and he starts beating himself up over his past sins and convincing himself what he did was inexcusable. Said act happened in the war between Britain and Scottland. After witnessing what the British Soldiers have done he goes on a rampage and kills as many as he can find, as well as the officer that ordered the massacre of his clan and he's facing a friend of that officer and all but ready to die to answer for his crimes.

In the end the point made is that you can not always judge someone by their actions alone, but you also have to look at why they did it and look at who they are as a whole. Methos makes the point that as much as Duncan sees them as innocent soldiers now, when he did it they were the monsters that slaughtered his clan.

I guess the end point is that we all have the capacity for both good and evil.

All this said, I sometimes have to wonder about those that have fallen to the darkness completely. Maybe it's my damn overly strong sense of empathy, but I sometimes feel a tinge of sorrow and regret that a fellow human being felt the need to sink to such levels. As a someone with some level of faith it's made me ponder one thought. Does God cry hardest for the damned, because they are the only ones truly lost forever?
