  1. I'm a nerd who's very curious by nature. I have a bad habit of taking things apart to see how they work, though my issue is I'm not always able to put them back together So I tend to break stuff all the time. Of course, it's usually old technology that's largely obsolete or that I no longer have any use for. I very rarely will subject anything new/valuable to that kinda treatment. In terms of natural breakage though, I got a Microsoft Surface Pro a few weeks ago. The first night I got it, it stopped powering on, and the Microsoft Store had to do a firmware update to restore it. Then after that, it was having a number of nuisance issues. A factory reimage/reset of it didn't fix it, so I tried the Windows 8.1 Preview update, and that didn't fix it either, and in fact made things worse. I tried to downgrade back to Windows 8.0, but both my Recovery USB drive and recovery partition wouldn't work. I ended up taking it back to the Microsoft Store again, they couldn't repair it either, so I got a brand new one as a replacement.
  2. Lets put it this way, should online phone books like http://www.whitepages.com/ be allowed to operate? It's a directory site. Just about all of the information on that site is public information, usually from places like phone books, government records (birth certificates, voter registration, etc, whatever your state/municipality makes publicly), etc. All this site does is make the information a little bit more convenient to access. Even without it, if you go to a city hall or public library, you would likely still find the same information.
  3. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 running from Verizon Wireless (Vodafone). Out of all the phones I've had, it's probably the best one I've owned - it's very light and powerful, and the battery life is very good for a smart phone. Right now I'm running SF Launcher on it (instead of the default TouchWiz) - it's lightweight, very clean, and easy to use. Previously I've also used Launcher Pro and Lighting Launcher, but I need to switch things up every now and then.
  4. I always loved the original Unreal Tournament (UT99/UT:GOTY) - the graphics were a bit dated, but it had some amazing level and weapons design, and a very great AI. The original Halo for PC was great too, but only in a multiplayer sense. Again, mostly due to the unique level designs and challenges.
  5. Considering I have over a half dozen MLP tee shirts, five large MLP posters hanging on my bedroom walls, and a couple of sculptures/beanie ponies on my desk, it's rather hard for me to hide that fact from my parents. I never really told them though. I kinda just started getting MLP merchandise and eventually they got the clue.
  6. All the time. I try to take care of my electornics, but they're usually so small and slippery that I loose my grip at one point or another throughout the day. So far though I've been lucky in that out of all the times I've dropped something, the only damage that has ever been suffered was a tiny dent in the corner of one of my devices - no broken screens or nonworking components, just minor cosmetic damage.
  7. I like riding bikes. Until recently I didn't bike too often (maybe once a week) because I had a cheap, low quality Walmart bike that was uncomfortable to ride and not really the most structurally sound thing I've ever seen. Though two weeks ago, I finally decided to invest in a real bicycle and got a Trek Verve 2. I absolutely love it - it's so fun to ride, comfortable, and durable. I've been riding 3-4 times a week since I got it now.

    N/A

Really, this is one of the better approaches to college. I hear people complaining about student loan debt all the time, but they often fail to remember that they're the ones who accumulated it. Graduating college does not guaranty you a job, so it's just putting yourself in debt that you risk not being able to pay off. If the school you're going to is too expensive to reasonable accumulate enough money to pay it off as you go along, then it may be wise to reconsider your choice of school. If it's far away from home (Requiring a dorm/apartment, meal plan, etc), it may be worth it to look into colleges closer to home, as living at home can lead to substantial savings.
  10. Although I'm a Chrome user myself, I've always loved Opera Pony's design. She's cute, easy on the eyes, and overall a good design for a pony. I've not seen Torch pony before, but she also has a nice design. Finally, there's two IE ponies floating around. The other (seemingly more popular) design features lighter, reversed colors and a slightly more youthful appearance:

    technology Adobe Creative Cloud?

I fail to see how Creative Cloud is a better deal. I only use Illustrator, Photoshop, and occasionally Flash, so CS Design & Web was all I needed. It's true that it's more expensive to purchase, but you only have to purchase it once. And then there's two paths to go down: - If you're fine with what you have, keep the version you're using, and never spend another dime on it again. - If you like having the latest version, Adobe sold updates at a much lower cost. For example, if you had CS5.5 Design, it only cost $375USD to upgrade to CS6 Web & Design, as opposed to $600. Plus the $50/month thing isn't entirely true either. It's only $50/month if you agree to a one year contract, meaning that once the return period expires, you can't cancel for an entire year. While that may not seem like a big deal now, financial surprises do tend to happen - you could loose your job, have your car break, medical problems, etc. So while you may think that you're able to pay $50/month now, if something happens, that $50/month can become a real burden if your financial landscape changes unexpectedly. If you don't want a one-year commitment then it's $75/month, or $900/year. It'd be a little nicer if you can pre-pay a subscription - just give them $600 and they give you access for a year, as it's much easier to be certain about your finances in the present than it is for the future. You gotta be careful when it comes to contracts and that.
  12. Thanqol's "Yours Truly" is one of my favorites. This story is a bit unique in how it's presented, being told almost entirely through a series of letters between the Mane Six and others as they grow up and life drifts them apart. It is an incredibly beautiful, sad, and bittersweet story.
  13. Pros of a custom-built PC: Hardware is usually cheaper than an OEM PC with the same specs. Full customization - you can choose exactly what goes in your PC, what it looks like, etc. Usually all standard components/connectors, making upgrades and repairs easy and affordable. No bloatware or unwanted "extras". Cons of a custom-built PC: Each component would have a different warranty period, making it more difficult to keep track. Risk of accidentally selecting the wrong component. Windows license is not included, meaning you'll have to purchase an expensive license to use Windows legally. Very limited options for support. Locating drivers can be difficult. Pros of an OEM PC: Ready to go out of the box - no need to find drivers (usually*), setup programs, etc. Standardized warranty - usually all components are covered for the same period of time. Windows is pre-loaded, saving you the cost of having to buy a license**. Full tech support is usually available. Cons of an OEM PC: Less flexibility, you have to take what is offered. Some OEMs use nonstandard componentss/connectors, so upgrades/replacements can be difficult. Tons of bloatware included, meaning hours removing/uninstalling all the stuff you don't want. Conclusion: Really, it depends. If you're looking for a cheap, basic computer, don't plan on making many upgrades to it, and would like full support, an OEM/retail computer would usually be the route to take. However, if you don't mind being your own tech support, would like to extend the life of your computer through upgrades, and would like a range of flexibility from your computer, then a custom built one would be the better option. Notes: * Sometimes a manufacturer will ship a computer with a bad driver. My current laptop came with a faulty wireless driver, and the WiFi would not work when the computer was running off battery. I've also seen a computer that shipped without a USB controller driver, meaning that the USB keyboard/mouse/printer would not function. ** Technically the price of Windows is included with the computer, but most major OEMs get their licenses at a significant discount, so there is a price savings there. *** Remember, piracy is wrong. If you build your own computer, be sure to either purchase a legal copy of Windows or use Linux.
  14. DeviantArt is easily the site I spend the most time on - I enjoy DA, as I have a ton of friends on there, and it's a fun site. Beyond that, my second most frequented site is NewsBlur, which I use to keep up with RSS feeds (Ever since Google Reader announced their closure). I follow over 200 feeds using NewsBlur (most of which are Tumblr feeds), and it makes staying on top of things really easy.
  15. That is indeed it, thank you so very much! An no wonder I couldn't remember if it was a oneshot or had multiple chapters - I forgot it was a continuation of another fic
  16. Hi all! I'm wondering if anyone could help me locate an old fic. I've seen several blogs/pictures discussing Twilight's future after today's episode, and they reminded me of this story. Basically in this fic, Twilight becomes a princess of equestria, and slowly drifts away from her friends. Several years later, she returns to Ponyville to see Applejack, the only one of her friends still living after all the time that has passed. After they have lunch together, they head up to a hill by Ponyville, where Applejack herself passes away, happy to finally be rejoining her friends. Needless to say it was a sad fic. It also was a bit on the short site, I think either being a oneshot or only a few chapters long. I'm not sure where it was posted, but I searched my favorites on both FIMFiction and FF, and came up empty. If anyone's heard of this fic, I'd appriciate it if they could point me in the right direction. Thanks
  17. Personally, I use Windows the majority of the time, but truth be told, they're all computers, they all take you to the same internet. Unless you're doing some type of specialized work or running a server or something, there's little reason to pick one over the other, so I just tell people to use what they can afford and what they're most familiar with

    technology Lets Talk Tablets

Are you planning on storing music or video on the tablet, or will you be streaming most of your media? If you're planning on streaming content, then the storage space probably won't be something you need worry much about. So the main thing is if you want the larger screen or not. Both devices have the same resolution, so size is the biggest difference. Personally, I carry around a larger-sized tablet (iPad 3) every day at work, and use it a lot at home as well, and I've never found the size to be a burden to carry around. I find it to be the perfect balance between portability and screen size.
  19. For the most part. It is an extremely awesome tablet, and it makes drawing much quicker and easier than working with a regular Bamboo/Intuos tablet. However, mine has some issues with color calibration, namely that the colors appear desaturated when compared to other monitors. This causes an image I'm drawing to look fine on the Cintiq, but when I look at the image on another computer, the colors appear way off. From what I can tell by searching the Internet, this seems to be a somewhat common problem with the model I have (Cintiq 12WX). It's just really annoying. Beyond that though, it works as well as everyone says it does, if not better. Though if you're looking to buy one, I'd recommend saving for a larger model, as they're made with newer technology, and you get a lot more space to work with.
  20. What I'm looking at: My entire desk/work area: (Yes, I know that it's halfway through Janurary and I still have a December calendar hanging on my wall. Replacing it is on my to-do list)
  21. At home, I run Windows 7 Professional x64 on my desktop, and Home Edition on my laptop. I have no intentions of upgrading to Windows 8 any time soon. At work, our desktops and laptops run a mix of Windows XP Pro (x86) and Windows 7 Pro (x64 and x86), depending on their specs and how old they are. All new computers get Win 7 Pro x64 though. Our servers run a mix of Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter, Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise, and Windows 2003 Standard.
  22. I'm not really much of a Linux user, as I work primarily with Windows 7, 2008, and 2003 for just about everything I do. That being said, whenever I do use Linux, I prefer Redhat based variants, such as Fedora or CentOS. I also enjoy Debian due to the simple package management and dependency resolution, but I cannot stand Ubuntu.
  23. No, I think you're referring to Inuhoshi - she's drawn the bulk majority of Winning Pony/Winningverse art. I've only drawn two so far, but I'm working on a third. Though the sheer amount of fanart that the story's attracted (well over a dozen images from about a half dozen artists) should be testament enough to how great that fic is.
  24. You misspelled "Blossomforth" - she's best background pony And I've not only read it, I've drawn several vectored scenes from that story. (Also planning on drawing a scene from "Moonstone" at some point, but I have no idea how to do the composition)
  25. Life and Times of a Winning Pony (link - in progress) Cloud Kicker leads a very wild, shameless, crazy life which is practically just one adult situation after another, while her best friend Blossomforth is pretty much the exact opposite. This fic is hilarious, emotional, moving, and deep. It has excellent characterization of two ponies who are more or less are otherwise ignored by the fandom, and has built up a very nice collection of side stories surrounding the fic. The Moonstone Cup (link) Twilight Sparkle is invited to participate in the "Moonstone Tournament", a competition of the greatest magical users in the world (unicorn, dragon, griffion, etc). This story has the best action scenes I've seen in a fanfic - they are beautifully woven, fast paced, and full of excitement. A Shower of Stars (link) An half-forgotten plot of distruction starteed by Nightmare Moon threatens Equestria, and no longer being her former evil self, Luna is powerless to stop it, leaving it up to Rainbow Dash and the Wonderbolts to save Equestria. This is a very beautiful and moving story, and has great character development on Rainbows behalf. The Wind Thief (link) A semi-Skyrim crossover where Twilight and Sly (OC) are sent on a quest into a crypt to recover an ancient relic which has the power to grant a single wish, intending to use it as a way to rid Equestria of dragons who are devastating the land. Great action and character development, and I love the spooky tone of exploring an ancient crypt. A Bluebird's Song (link) Twilight makes a discovery about pegasus flight which ends up attracting some very unwelcome attention from an evil organization. A great adventure story with lots of relationship building and several pleasant surprises.
