  1. Meh. They're not for me, but I don't hate them. They're intentionally silly and kind of lame, so I don't think they're worth the energy to hate them outside of its overexposure in the popular culture, but that's long past. It's actually kind of fun to go back and watch how those movies pandered to my generation's idea of "cool" and "fabulous." It's pretty hilarious.

Anyway, good as time as any to inquire into this, but has anyone else found that all of Troy's friends are assholes? And I just don't mean the basketball team in the first one; I mean everyone. They make him feel bad whenever they step outside they want him to do. "Oh, you want to skip our after-work baseball game so you can talk to colleges and secure a future for yourself?! Well, screw you too, we'll just make you feel alienated and make you feel like you've been replaced with some other guy!"

Actually, I take it back. The second one at the country club is pretty actively obnoxious.

  2. Yes.

Trying not to get over-hyped (this could end up being a bucket of suck for all we know), but this looks pretty wizard so far. I'm particularly fond of how it looks to have a better balance of CGI and practical effects than the Prequels, in that there is practical effects at all.

The desert planet is kind of redundant, though. I guess they used up all the "this planet is entirely made up of _____" ideas around the time they made a lava planet that seemed to exist solely to provide a cool background for a laser sword fight. I'd argue that The Phantom Menace broke ground with a planet made entirely of mediocrity.

What do you think? Does the combination of Luke Skywalker's ominous narration and the image of Darth Vader's burnt-put helmet give you chills? Does the return of Han Solo fill you with warm sense of nostalgia and hope? Do you still think that lightsaber broadsword is freaking dumb? DISCUSS.

    Rarity: "OOOOoooooOOOOooooo!!!"

    Spike: "..."

Adulthood did not solve all of Spike's problems. Not that Rarity seems to mind.

Also, I think I finally figured out how to draw adult Spike. I go back to art I did of him from last year and I cringe a little bit.

Sooooooo, yeah, DeviantArt, if you are so inclined.

  4. I was gonna say the obvious choice, but in retrospect, he was actually quite effective at keeping kids from living in a van down by the river.

Probably could have gotten better fitting slacks, though.

  5. If Doctor Whooves is indeed a part of the 100th episode and he is literally the Doctor as the rumor goes, than it would literally be the best thing ever if they give a canon explaination for why there's twin clones of background ponies in the early seasons.

  6. Didn't see it coming, that's for darn sure. The episode would have been better if they went in a different direction and actually focused on the conflict between Applejack and Fluttershy, but if they were going for weird and unexpected, they succeeded.

Not quite sure I fully get people who were angry that this happened to Fluttershy, but I don't get most outrages over negative things happening to Fluttershy. Where was the anger when Abe Simpson turned into a vampire, huh?!

  7. Are you talking about Candy Mane? Her mane style looks a bit like Scootaloo's:

    img-3473787-1-Candy_Mane_id.png

She even lacks a cutie mark, just like her daughter!

But in all seriousness, I doubt they would insert a key character's mother in the background a few episode before said character's first appearance for no reason, and I'd rather her mother be an actual character with an actual design and not just a randomly generated background character.

  8. Overrated:

    • Sonic Rainboom (one of those "Due, you had to be there when this episode came out!" type deals, I suppose)
    • A Canterlot Wedding (the good stuff is awesome, but the lesser stuff is woefully underdeveloped)
    • Rarity Takes Manhattan (I actually quite like this one, but it best Rarity episode it is not)
    • Bats! (should have stuck with Fluttershy and AJ's conflict instead)

    Underrated

    • Family Appreciation Day (really solid, some nice world-building)
    • The Crystal Empire (exciting, consistent sense of menace that the other two-parters can't touch)
    • The Last Roundup (sadly overshadowed by controversy)
    • Dragon Quest (does a lot for Spike's character and develops his relationship with the ponies)
    • Too Many Pinkie Pie (not sure if truly underrated, but it's much more profound and clever than many give it credit for)
    • Equestria Games (what we ended up getting instead of the games is still pretty aces)
    • Owl's Well That Ends Well (not very good, but horrible it is not)
    • Spike At Your Service (also not very good, but it only needed a few tweaks to make it good, which is more than I can saw for other episodes that don't quite work)
    • Trade Ya (really, really fun. still pretty sure people only got mad because it was Fluttershy)

I did not mean for that latter list to be so Spike-centric.

  9. Am I the only one who thinks this looks like a villain's castle? It just seems dark and gloomy there. Maybe it's just me :P

It looks like the Castle of the Crystal at the end of The Dark Crystal with a darker shade. In fact, it looks so similar now that I look at it that I'm beginning to suspect that this was intentional. I dunno, maybe it's the general tree shape/being made of crystal.

My guess is that it comes complete with living quarters for Twilight and Spike. I doubt the Magic of Friendship would just leave a princess hanging.

  10. Aaaaand finally... does Egoraptor count?

    yesyesyesyesyesyes

Speaking of grumps, am I the only one who thinks Daniel Avidan could be on this show and totally nail it? Heck, he can even sing like the best of them if need be.

    yay, unicorns...

The Mayor Luigi fiasco convinced me Dan & Arin would have been a great Flim & Flam in an alternate universe.

  11. If the entire season involves them running off across Equestria to solve problems big and small like the Comic Con preview implied, than yes, a simpler episode would be a nice change of pace. What would be cool is if the episode was the cap for character threads from throughout the season. For example, if the Cutie Mark Crusaders do in fact get their cutie marks like many believe they will, than maybe the episode would contain the aftermath of that and show the CMC deciding what to do now that their series-long goal has been completed. Have Rainbow Dash officially become a Wonderbolt after being a part of the reserves during the season. If there was a romance being developed, have it pay off. Have a little scene between Celestia and Twilight reflecting on what they've gone through over the course of the season, or have a defeated villain make a quick cameo that maybe sets up the next season. Perhaps it means the episode won't stand up on its own, but I'd think that make a nice respite after whatever crazy villainy the Mane Six dealt with in the past few weeks.

  12. I'm assuming the same way the Royal Family makes money: through taxation and grants. I'm sure ponies would be more than willing to fund the princess who saves all their lives on a consistent basis, whereas our Royal Family doesn't appear to do anything beyond stare at people disapprovingly.
