I think Pinkie Pie just went along for the ride. She's just that type of pony. It would be awkward if suddenly she and Apple Jack are related. Kind of capricious, really. We must take into consideration what occurs before that scene.

Baring in mind that it's unlikely the mane 6 will be replaced entirely with a new set of characters, and that it's possible a side character from previous episodes will be made into a main one, let's focus on the possible candidates, because it was confirmed that Sunset Shimmer will not be that new main character. Now that that is established, who is actually LIKELY to become a new main character? We have : Trixie Trixie Trixie Trixie And did I mention Trixie? Who else, most likely being a unicorn, will be the next main character and has been in previous episodes?

Equestria Girls seems to me like a big scam, if not, I shiver at the possibilities. So disturbing O_O I could already see the split in the fandom....

In that case the newcomers need to watch the series from season 1 down, which is easy to do via YouTube and Netflix :3 It's never even been hinted that they're related, and if they were, ti would have been revealed long ago. Scootaloo and RD have shared episodes numerous times in the show already.

A hybrid is half one thing half the other. Fluttershy is all pegasus based on what we've seen. The only true examples of hybrids are the alicorns. The Cake babies are just the result of ancestry of both unicorn and pegasus from 2 earth ponies. I wouldn't skip to drastic conclusions and say Fluttershy or Pinkie Pie are hybrids based on their personalities. We could say Applejack "acts" like a pegasus, but the reality is that any type of pony can have any type of personality or preferences. Spike is a dragon but lives completely like a pony. This has been addressed in 2 episodes already, but he isn't a hybrid. Interesting query, though.

Honestly I think there should be a new set of mane characters. Now that Twilight is a princess, she has royal duties to attend to, and all her friends have achieved their goals. Rainbow Dash is in Wonderbolts Academy, Rarity has had many fashion successes, Fluttershy has learned to balance being shy and being assertive when necessary, Pinkie Pie is Pinkie Pie to the max, Applejack has already won the competitions she's wanted to win..... It think it would be a wonderful new story direction to focus on whole new characters entirely, and to take a little more inspiration from the classic MLP, when they went on real epic adventures...Castles, dragons, sea ponies, monsters, magic (minus the humans of course). My fear is it honing in on the CMC. That would be beating a dead horse. I want them to either get their cutie marks or find out they wont get any at all. They can't be blank flanks forever. It'd also be nice to see Spike aspire to be more than just Twilight's little helper. Will he stay in Ponyville or will he become some sort of royal attendant or something? And can we treat Princess Luna more like a princess? Can the new main character maybe take tasks from her instead of Princess Celestia? Maybe Twilight can get some training or whatever from Luna? There are so many possibilities, but to be honest I don't want fans to have too much say in the direction of the show. That could end in disaster. I want to see Lauren Faust get back on board. Season 3 was a watered down continuation of the first 2.
