I've been noticing a whole bunch of FUD being spread around about Macs, as I see with Linux.
For the record, I DO NOT own a mac, so don't be callin' me a mac fanboy.
So is your HP, Dell, Whatever you own, cause' guess what... they're ALL made in China , shocked much?
Are we talking Macbook Pro? Mac pro? iMac? You might have a point there.
If you mean the Macbook Air, okay, Enlighten me, Find me an ultrabook ( Keyword: ULTRABOOK ) that has the exact same specs as the base Macbook air 11", and for cheaper.
For the longest time, I've thought this too, but as it turns out, it's far from it. If you know how to use the command line, it's far from it.
It's a *nix just like Linux and BSD, So if you know what you're doing, you can do some impressive mods.
sorry I felt like I had to vent a little bit, FUD spreaders are worse than any ol' Console, Windows, Apple, Whatever fanboy.
Go on a head and enlighten me otherwise, happy clacking!

This takes place in Unreal Tourney 2004, with a weak 10mm handgun.
stalk, stalk, enable burst fire, HEAD SHOT!, re-enable semi-auto, stalk, get's caught, shoots aiming for the head, HEAD SHOT!, stalk, stalk, get's caught by 2 bots, aims at the head of one, HEAD SHOT!, aims at the head of the other, HEAD SHOT!, HEAD SHOT!, HEAD SHOT!, HEAD SHOT!, HEAD SHOT!, HEAD SHOT!, HEAD SHOT!, HEAD SHOT!, HEAD SHOT!, HEAD SHOT!, HEAD SHOT!, HEADSHOT!, Head Hunter!, another 12 HEAD SHOTS!, makes a normal kill.

If you ask me, not really.
It's more of an epeen boost than anything imo.
Now, don't get me wrong, There are some benefits of Overclocking, but the increases vary quite a bit, and often times not enough to be worth it.
Before I jump in, I have 2 overclocked machines. an Intel core i5 2500k @ 4.6 GHz and an AMD 960T @ 4 Ghz. Do I need them overclocked? no I do not, I just choose to give them an overclock.
To start, These overclocks might be impressive... but they were not at all easy to get. It took A LONG TIME to get my 2500k stable at 4.6, under linux ofc. It definitely would have been easier to do under Windows... but that's not how I roll. Either way, the voltage I had to use was a wopping 1.375, and if my Cooler wasn't good enough, it would still be at stock.
My 960T, that is currently @ 4 GHz also running linux. It has a big potential of being a stable 6-core, and I could spend all of my time to get it stable. But It might not happen because It's already pretty snappy as a 4-core at it's current speed, only when it becomes compelling I'll do it.
Generally, it is not exactly a good idea to overclock under Linux ( or any *nix now that I think about it ), since linux and other *nixes are more sensitive to overclocks than a Windows machine would be.
Back in my Windows days, I had my 2500k Overclocked to 4.1 Ghz, and to be very honest, I saw little to no difference between that and stock. Then again I had a crappy board for it back then as well lol.
Well either way, Even though I do overclock, I don't exactly "Enjoy it" so much as I just simply do it. With that in mind, I have been speculating that for my next machine, I'll get either a locked i7 or an e3 xeon because they would be enough for my usage. And quite frankly, I love to have an excuse to make a new machine every couple of years lol. AMD is not out of the question, but at this point, I don't see them as a possibility.
Sorry for the extensive ... opinion, but I just thought I would share my opinion, thank you for reading.
happy clacking!

I've noticed that many members here aren't really for SSDs for various reasons.
While I'm probably not going to change opinions, thought I'd state why I like them.
The most obvious one is they do actually increase boot speed greatly. My Desktops and laptops boot up at around 15 seconds.
Yes that's under linux with TRIM enabled, but even under Windows 7, boot speeds were better on an SSD than an hdd.
Along with the faster boot times, it makes the system feel overall snappy. Most of the Software I installed on my Desktop's SSD for example starts up fairly quicky. And surprise surprise! I've only used 15GB of space on it. Again I'm cheating because I'm under Linux, but even under windows, I never used more than 25GB of it. While I didn't install every software I had on it, the ones that did were the ones I used the most anyways.
Another thing I like is how they aren't quite as fragile as hard drives. This means I can have a slightly more durable laptop ( or at least be relieved that the problem won't be storage drive related ). While this does greatly decrease storage capacity... Why do I need to have more than 120/128GB of storage on the go?
Before you think I am anti-hdd, I'm not. Both of my desktops have hard drives for the extra storage (pictures, movies, music, etc) and programs that would only get an incremental increase on the SSD. My laptop on the other hand only has an SSD, though as I said several lines ago, why would I need more than 120/128GB of storage on the go?
just a fairly incomplete rant... but I think I got my point across.
Now don't even get me started on mechanical keyboards!

-Attempted to fix a 1280x1024 monitor by replacing some capacitors on the monitor's PSU. it failed though.
-unlocked all 6-cores in slackstation, overclocked it to 4Ghz, and installed slackware on it (hence the name Slackstation).
-Drove around town in a car.
-Installed Arch w/ i3 WM in my thinkpad.
-used my mechanical keyboard during the whole time.
and that about concludes it...
btw... Mechanical keyboards or BUST!

First post, not sure how to start out, but...
I guess I could start some tuts... like Arch install tutorial, even Gentoo Linux install tutorial.
Also when in doubt, don't forget to do your own research first!

Please note: this is NOT a tutorial on how to make your computer flatter, only faster.
Buy a 90GB+ SSD
- Buy a 2.5" external hard drive enclosure if that laptop is your only computer.
Replace the hdd in your laptop with the new SSD.
- Throw the hdd into the 2.5" external hard drive enclosure.
Transfer your current install from the hdd to the SSD
and Voilla, you converted your laptop to an ultrabook-like machine!

Thought I'd break up the chain!
Before Fanbois/FanGoils be all like: The hell you talking about!? Win8/8.1 is best OS EVAR!!11!1!1!one!!!!!
Let me just say this right now I don't exactly hate it, even though I say I do and have the title stating I do, I realize that even Windows 8/8.1 has a place as well, I'm just not their target audience.
The UI - This is a common dislike of the OS, and don't get me wrong, I can use it.. I just choose not to. So counter-intuitive to me, and I don't see a point of it on the desktop at all. I know there are mods to make it look almost exactly like Windows 7, but I shouldn't have to modify my install for previously native functionality.
The "Appstore" - Users might not be in a walled garden right now, but who's to say they won't be in the future? In my opinion at least, it seems as though M$ will eventually want to kill support for old software and force users to buy stuff from their store... I don't like that. Not ONE bit.
The Internal Changes - The one that's most emphasized by Micro$oft is the fast boot, but what about other internal changes? Well being proprietary software, we're not allowed to see the code. Kinda suspicious of it but that's just me.
Just simply explains a little why I don't like windows 8/8.1 , I might do this again and in more detail later. I just wanted to break the chain!
happy clacking!
