What do I say about My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic?

It's a warm, funny, and relaxing show not afraid to tackle real issues. It has a character for everyone to relate to personally, as well as situations that accommodate for those feelings too. Everyone has presence, motivations, personality, etc. to make them feel alive. Most of us wouldn't have ever thought that we would enjoy a show about pastel ponies as much as we did. The show is only a fraction of what "MLP" means to me, though. The fandom itself is what makes this show shine as bright as it does.

I became a fan of the show after watching my very first episode Dragonshy, yet I didn't really get sucked in until I learned about Derpy's appearance in The Last Roundup. I never had seen a series be so dedicated to its fans, so I decided I'd look into it. I was greeted with open arms by the very people on these forums. It was the first time I took an active role in any fandom, and it couldn't have come at a better time.

I was going through a downward spiral of depression, anger, and sadness. I was just looking for a way out of dealing with the stress of my familial problems (since resolved). On these forums I found people to talk to, I found people who cared. I loved it. So why am I leaving?

Well, I have responsibilities now that I didn't before, but that's not the entirely why I'm making my departure now. My biggest reason is simply due to lack of interest in terms of discussion. My interests have shifted immensely, and, with my ever-growing attachment to the anime industry becoming clear, I feel like I've lost the spark to continue with the show. So why'd I come back at all?

Well, I came back to give you guys a proper send-off after seeing Tommy Oliver's video on Appleloosa's Most Wanted. I wasn't angry offended by what I saw; I was just reminded of the times I've had on here. That was when I decided I needed to confront the issue of my year-long absence head on. You all deserved a better farewell than what I had given you.

So here it is. It's just me pouring my heart out about how much MLP means to me, how much my time in the fandom means to me, and how much these forums mean to me. You've all helped me grow both emotionally and mentally. You made me a better, more complete person.

I learned how to be more confident in my opinions, while still being respectful. I learned I wasn't alone in the world. Even while writing this I learned that this place holds many dear memories to me. It's full of wonderful people, willing to help or console someone at the drop of a hat. This all just made everything so much harder for me. I'm not too upset anymore, though. After all, this isn't "Goodbye forever," it's more of a "Farewell for now."

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I will truly cherish every moment I've had on here, as well as those whom I've had the pleasure of conversing with. I wish you all well, and this has been Dry Colt signing off of his blog and the forums for the final time.

The 100th episode special of MLP, Slice of Life, has been generally well received throughout the fandom. I enjoyed it immensely, and I must say that it is a love letter to the fandom as a whole. It has so many little self-referential tidbits to the show and the fandom it created. Dark Qiviut, Nuke, and probably others have tackled this in detail. I recommend you check out their blogs if you're curious.

The episode shows what I love about MLP in general. We get a surprisingly well-crafted story with a fantastic moral, mostly spot-on humor, likable characters, and a sense that we as a community are appreciated. The MLP staff cares immensely for their fanbase, and the quality of their show. Sure, they don't always knock it out of the park, but I'll be damned if they don't try. This amount of effort and respect for the community is no more apparent than it is here.

I sincerely couldn't have asked for a better episode to bow out of the active fandom on. Until next time!

NOTE: I'm planning my departure to be on June 18th. My final blog will go live that day, and I will give out my contact info via PM to those who want it. :grin2:

I'm going to be very blunt about this, I don't like number scores. I feel like they take try to quantify a qualitative value, and inadvertently are opening their review to unnecessary criticism by doing so.

"What makes you like one six better than the other? If one is better than the other how are they ranked the same?" They shout from the comment section.

Here's the real question, though. Do these numbers actually hold any meaning, or is there more to it than that?
I don't think I can determine this for you, but let me try to explain where I'm going with this.

You see in psychology there is a phenomenon called implicit association. As its name suggests it's when we base our interpretation of parts of the world around us based on what we have learned in life. In the case of review scores this can be problematic, as the reader will often interpret a number based on his or her own scale.

For example, AngryJoe rates video games based on 5 being considered the average with 1-4 being considered subpar, and 6-10 being considered above average. However, most people interpret review scores in association with what quantifies as passing and failing within their education system. Say AngryJoe gives a video game a 5, then. A viewer comes along and either takes issue with the score being so low, or associates that with being worse than it actually is.

You see, us humans have brains that work in bizarre ways. No matter what is said in that review, the connotation will more than likely be decided by that little number. Our minds want everything to be broken down to its simplest state for easy absorption. It's a fact that is likely responsible for our species having the drive to create, though it comes with a trade-off like many good things.

Let's tackle the real question then: Do numerical scores actually mean anything?

I'd say yes, actually. I don't like them personally, and I likely will never use them, but reviews are generally meant to reach the broadest audience possible, and discuss one's outlook on a specific title. In the writer's mind that score signifies what their own connotation of the game is. It's the simplest breakdown of an opinion possible, generally acting as a sorting system rather than a sunstitute.

At the end of the day reviews are just opinions, anyway. If you don't agree with number score, that's fine. Everyone is different, and as such not everyone cares about the nuances of the written review. It shouldn't be discredited, however. The written review is the writer's attempt to explain that score. Your interpretation and theirs both house their own meanings. Personal meanings. All text is open to interpretation, after all. Even in texts largely about other texts, or even the text criticizing their texts, the true meaning lies in the eye of the beholder.

Thank you for reading through my ramblings all the way through, and I hope you enjoyed it. Feel free to leave any feedback you have for this blog, or just general comments you want to share below! I'm open for anyone to chime in. See you in the next blog!

It's no secret that Persona 4 Golden is my all-time favorite RPG, however I haven't really explained why. I think that Persona 4 Golden's Social Links are a fantastic way to combine a strong sense of story and gameplay progression. Join me as I take a look at a large part what makes this game appeal to me.

P4G starts off slow, it means to construct a framework for the story (such as introducing important characters, concepts, the setting, and the tone), however this also acts as an introduction to the idea of choice. No choices in the first section really impact any stats you have. The changes are purely cosmetic. This isn't the case at all later on, where everything you do or say requires a good amount of thought. P4G's intro lays the foundation for the admittedly complex game mechanics, before giving them the reigns.

The first time you actually battle is when you get sucked into the TV by yourself. You feel powerless, but you can't fail here even if you tried. This battle serves the purpose of motivating the player. "I want to know what that is," they think. Back in the real world you go to class, and have a fairly standard day...Until a murder occurs involving a woman hanging from an antenna.

Skipping forward a bit we go into the TV world where the biggest theme of the game becomes obvious, acceptance of one's self. There's an unfavorable side in all of us. If we ignore that, we aren't trying to better ourselves, we're running from reality. Since these unfavorable sides are directly tied to the games bosses (which are generally a character's unfavorable side manifested into a bizarre, creepy-looking, shadow creatures filled to the brim with obvious symbolism), you end up personally dealing with the situation alongside. You beat them, and generally a party member joins you due to that creature becoming a Persona when subdued, and accepted. Now, after all this we're finally getying to where Social Links come in.

Social Links are events in which either a party member deals with the aftermath of their respective boss, or a side character's own personal story. Each of these characters represent different Arcana. Your character has the unique ability to wield multiple personas, and gets large experience boost when summoning one of which you have the Arcana for. You power these up by hanging out with characters outside of battle, usually helping them through their problems. If that character is a party member they also can learn moves via Social Link leveling. Confused yet?

Well, let me explain with an in-game example: Rise is an idol you meet later in the story. She has an identity crisis, and is unable to tell whether her idol, or casual personas are the "real" her. She accepts this is an issue in her shadow's boss fight, and you can choose to hang out with her afterward. As you level up the Social Link Rise's journey of self-discovery progresses. The reasons for why she is who she is revealed, along with the answer she's been looking for the whole time.

It's a satisfying experience in itself due to the great writing, yet on top of that gameplay perks are tossed at the player like crazy. Unique moves, abilities, and experience boosts constantly tie the narrative directly to the gameplay. It doesn't feel disconnected like most experiences are. You're there to support your friends, in battle or in life. Hell, quite a few funny scenes are interspersed throughout the story to give the player a break from the brutal difficulty, and meticulous planning necessary to advance. The characters carry these scenes in the best possible way.

Anyway, I've rambled long enough. It's just that with Persona 5, as well my departure from the forums on its way I wanted to talk about this. I hope you enjoyed reading this! Leave a comment down below if you want any clarification on this subject, or just wanna leave feedback. I don't bite. Until next time!

Mario Kart is a fantastic game, in my humble opinion. It is not perfect, though, no game ever is. Let's get the bad outta the way first, so that we can talk about the good.

Every time you earn a gold medal you are rewarded with a random unlockable character (there are fourteen total), and you can earn customization options by collecting copious amounts of coins. Some people will likely be disappointed by both of these being random. For example, say that I want to unlock Rosalina and I didn't care about anyone else, I theoretically might not unlock her until I've gotten my fourteenth gold trophy. This goes for kart customization options as well, but I personally enjoyed the randomness of it all. I still felt rewarded for my efforts in the game, so it didn't annoy me.

Something that did annoy me however was how botched up Battle Mode is in this outing. Instead of being placed in a battle arena to duke it put with one another you now do so on eight of the normal race tracks. The maps are too large to find your opponents, but that's not actually my main issue with it. My main issue with Battle Mode comes from ghost players. Upon elimination you will become a ghost, and during this time you are invisible can hit the remaining competitors with items. It makes it so that matches are often based on who the ghosts decided to target. It's absurd! I never really liked Battle Mode anyway, but this is a major downgrade from previous installments. You can still get some enjoyment out of it, don;t misunderstand, but it feels rushed. Alright, now on to the good!

The racing itself is possibly the best it's ever been (minus one possible exploit which I'll address in a future blog). Gliding and underwater gameplay are bolstered by the new anti-gravity sections. In these sections you will defy gravity and can bump other racers, and some obstacles to get a boost. This new mechanic leads to the best kind of chaos, especially online. Anti-grav sections also allow for more variety, and more dynamic transitions to both the aforementioned gliding and underwater segments, preventing any possible bland level design that Mario Kart 7 had. The items have also all been re-balanced and tweaked to be more fair. The Blue Shell is more rare, and now only causes a single flip, it can be destroyed with the new item called the Super Horn, Triple Bananas now circle the player like shells do, holding an item out behind you no longer counts as using that item, etc. I think the only possible misstep is the Coin item, but even that has its uses. All of the heavyweights, middleweights, and lightweights feel like their namesake, but it is not flat-out said who is in each of the seven classes. I have a convenient list of who's in each class below.

-Featherweight: The Baby Characters, Lemmy, Small Mii

-Lightweight: Shy Guy, Koopa Troopa, Larry, Wendy, Lakitu, Toad, Toadette

    -Lower Middleweight: Peach. Daisy, Yoshi

-Upper Middleweight: Mario, Luigi, Ludwig, Iggy, Medium Mii

    -Heavyweight: DK, Waluigi, Rosalina, Roy

-Metal Class: Metal Mario, Pink Gold Peach

-Super Heavyweight: Wario, Bowser, Morton, Large Mii

The track design is also unique and creative. In fact, on top of that it's down right gorgeous. Everything runs in 1080p at a smooth 60 fps (30 fps with 3-4 player splitscreen). The locales are gorgeous and varied, from racing up and down waterfalls, to driving across a space station, to racing nearby by a volcano, the game nails the aesthetic appeal of each level to the tiniest details. In Royal Raceway the hot air balloons actually activate their burners, in N64's Rainbow Road the Mario-equivalent of the Statue of Liberty can be seen far in the background, that same statue appears in the stage Toad Harbor effectively linking the two. These touches aren't noticeable most of the time, but they do manage to make the world feel more alive. Oh,and don't even get me started on the fantastic musical score, just listen to Shy Guy Falls, Dolphin Shoals, or the N64 Rainbow Road remix and you'll understand, what I mean.

On top of fantastic aesthetic design, Nintendo has provided some creative pathways fitting of each stage. For example, in Sunshine Airport you can do a trick off a luggage belt for a boost of speed, you can also chose to go across a plane's wingspan, or go underneath it instead. Neither way is truly a shortcut either, which is great in my opinion. Most true shortcuts in the game require a Mushroom or Star for access, probably to give those in the back of the pack a better chance of catching up, further playing into the balanced approach to Mario Kart this game brings.

This game is another great entry in one of my favorite video game series. It gets my personal rating of "LOVED IT!" and it's definitely a must-have for any Wii U owner

I suppose I've been on these forums long enough now to give some info on the details on my past, and my depression. This was originally part of a response to 's blog (which I recommend checking out), but I felt that this should also be shared here, in the most personal place I have on the forums. Anyway here's a brief look at my life, and why depression hit me so hard growing up:

"From as far back as I can remember until I was seven my mom and dad constantly were fighting, whether it be verbally or physically. I don't even think my dad originally wanted a child. So, given the circumstances I learned early on that the world isn't exactly a "magical" place. After that my parents got divorced, my mom cried for more than a month straight. She lost the will to do anything, so I had to man-up and do it myself. Then after she recovered my dad went through a series of relationships with a young me in tow (split-custody). He often blamed me for his relationship troubles, and for a while I believed him. He eventually settled down with my stepmom. I accidentally caused some issues over another custody battle wasting a ton of money in the process., My stepmom's grandma died before she could introduce her to my stepsister for the first time, because of this. From then on my stepmom hated my guts, called me a lowlife, a retard, a mistake of nature. I didn't blame her. I tried for years to fix things from there and eventually succeeded, now I'm finally part of a happy family."

Hopefully this clears up my history as well as sheds light on my motivations. Remember, if you suffer from depression you don't have to go it alone, we as a community will be here to help and support you. Stay strong.

EDIT: Fixed numerous grammatical and contextual errors, sorry for the poor wording beforehand.

Here's what to take away from the Nintendo Direct that just aired today (in a list format due to lack of time).

    1. Four returning fighters were announced: Yoshi, Sheik (now a separate character from Zelda), Charizard (by himself) and Zero Suit Samus (now a separate character from Samus).

    2. One brand new fighter was announced: Greninja (expect radical Mewtwo fans to be pissed).

    3. Ridley and Yellow Devil were confirmed as boss characters.

    4. A Master Ball from Pokemon is now a separate item from the regular Poke Ball.

    5. All stages now have a "Final Destination" variation (flat stage, no obstacles, with aesthetics based on the stage chosen).

    6. Revealed that random matches online are now split up into "For Fun" and "For Glory" (think Player vs. Ranked).

    7. The 3DS exclusive "Smash Run" mode was announced. It functions like Kirby Air Ride's "City Trial" (Pick up items and power-ups in preparation for a separate battle at the end).

    8. A good amount of items, assist trophies, and Pokemon were announced.

    9. Many characters had their moves showcased to some extent (Zelda's Down-B is now Phantom Slash, Olimar's Up-B is now Flying Pikmin, Pit has the Three Sacred Treasures as his Final Smash, Mega Man has his other iterations join in alongside him in a firing squad as his Final Smash, etc.).

    10. Revealed customizable attacks for offline and friend-based online play. For example in the footage Kirby's inhale was given an freezing attribute, but couldn't suck the opponent in anymore.

    11. The gameplay is noticeably faster in the footage shown, than it was in Brawl (seems about on par with Melee).

    12. No release date yet, still expected to have a Holiday 2014 launch for Wii U, but will be released on the 3DS this summer.

For a while I was on the fence about how I had felt about several episodes of the show, because they had slightly botched up morals. The three that come to mind are: A Dog and Pony Show, A Friend In Deed, and Trade Ya! I came to the realization that I don't really care enough about the execution of the moral to have effect my enjoyment after watching Trade Ya! yesterday and wondering "Why do I want to say that I love this episode, despite its unfortunate implications within the sentimental value moral?" The answer to this is fairly simple in actuality: all of these episodes, in my opinion, were solid in every other aspect, and while I still think that the common flaws are definitely there, I have decided that they will not affect my enjoyment of the episode at hand.

Yea, this blog was fairly brief, but don't worry I have brought you all a picture! Twilight isn't too fond of it, though.

I just watched some footage of Mario Kart 8 from IGN and GameXplain, and as a long time Mario Kart fan, I am ecstatic that it basically confirms that all returning tracks will have an added twist to them. This is a huge step in the right direction for the series in my opinion, because sure there was some track tweaking in its predecessors, but nothing like this. This is just goddamn amazing in my opinion, and I'm going to pre-order my copy over the next few days thanks to the gameplay footage of both the old and new tracks (but for the sake of this entry I'm just going to talk about the old). Below are the currently seen retro tracks with their respective twists briefly explained alongside them.

Moo Moo Meadows (MK:Wii) - now has a brief optional gliding section.

Cheep Cheep Beach (MK:DS) - now has fully functional optional underwater segments to the sides.

Mario Circuit (MK:SS) - the hairpin turn is now a slanted anti-gravity section followed by a gliding section.

Toad's Turnpike (MK:64) - now has an optional anti-gravity sections where you can ride the outside walls, there are trucks that can be ramped off of to activate a gliding section.

Dry Dry Desert (MK:DD) - the bumpy section of the original track is now flooded, with the water flowing out of large holes in the ground (presumably bottomless pits).

Donut Plains 3 (SMK) - the track is now flooded, adding an optional and non-optional underwater segment.

Royal Raceway (MK:64) - the long jump is now a gliding section. So far it is the least changed track.

DK Jungle (MK:3DS) - the turns in the Golden Banana temple are a bit different, and it is now an anti gravity segment.

Rainbow Road (MK: 64) - now has several brief gliding sections with boost rings, heavily altered terrain for anti-gravity sections, and is a one-lap track with three checkpoints. The Chain Chomps have been replaced by Chomp Balls bouncing on undulating parts of the track. This is the most changed level so far.

    Title: A Rare Occasion

Synopsis: Spike wants to celebrate Rarity's birthday with a party of his own, but when Pinkie's extravagant party flair unknowingly one-ups his plans at every turn Spike lets his frustration get the best of him.

Title: Here is My Hoof (named after the 1930's play "Here is My Heart")

Synopsis: When the CMC decide to tryout for the Ponyville school musical and only Sweetie Belle makes the cut, the crew's relationship is strained and Sweetie Belle is left with a dilemma.

Note: Sweetie's motivation would be sparked by Rarity exclaiming how she "loves watching the musical with [her] dear friends," she would then inform AB and Scoots who gladly tag along (this reasoning may be tweaking due to For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils).

    Title: Later, Pinkie Gator

Synopsis: When Fluttershy is visiting the headquarters of Equestrian Society for the Preservation of Rare Creatures she finds that Pinkie's pet, Gummy, is part of an endangered species of toothless alligators. Fluttershy reluctantly decides she should convince Pinkie to take Gummy to see if he would rather be with his own kind.

Important points for the plot to work correctly:
-Fluttershy must not come off as preachy, but rather concerned for Gummy.
-Fluttershy has to show an understanding of how much Pinkie cares about Gummy.
-Pinkie needs to be understandably reluctant at first, but maturely decide that it might be for the best.
-No insults or false accusations should be stated between the two, but a disagreement is necessary.
-Gummy must go with his kind, but in a strange act of sentience return to Pinkie (proves their bond).

Rarity's line becomes a hit, and they gain some notoreity among the locals. Notes:
-Twilight can "hop off" of the fashionista's radar at any point, but worries about disappointing Rarity.
-Rarity mustn't even imply that she would actually be disappointed if Twilight bowed out.
-Spike will be along for Twilight to voice her concerns to.
-The fashion sophisticates mustn't be annoying, but rather just show that they want to mingle with Twi.
-The Mane 6 will not factor into the story, because Twi and Rarity aren't trying to leave their friends in any way.
-Moral: "You shouldn't worry about disappointing a friend over something you don't want to do. A true friend will understand your decision in the end."

Alright, I can't go on with the charade anymore, despite April Fools Day continuing onward. I am going to end all the nonsense with my Drymond Sentry persona, but I had fun (even if 90% of my posts were ironic jabs at the characters I supposedly worshipped).

My personal favorite post of my shenanigans (taken from 's one status update):
"I am currently making a Flash Sentry butter sculpture and putting it out in the sun. This will allow others to remember him as long as those touched by his presence do."

Thank you to all those I came in contact with during my obnoxious, little tyrade, you were all great sports and for that I am grateful. Until next year, April Fools!

This week's episode was 'Simple Ways' by Josh Haber. I liked the episode and it gave rise to a few interesting subjects, but first I want to talk about Mr. Haber. I rewatched Castle Mane-ia with my brother the other day and I noticed something about Haber's writing style, it often takes cues from Season 1. I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this, but in 'Castle Mane-ia' the AJ and RD competitive streak was reignited (albeit in a more friendly manner), Rarity and Fluttershy were seen hanging out separately from the group, and now we have another Rarity love interest resulting in an oddly 'Look Before You Sleep'-esque climax between AJ and Rarity. Just food for thought, ON WITH MY INTERPRETATION/ ANALYSIS!!!!!

I noticed during the stream that many people have taken issue with Trenderhoof for "being a douche." I didn't see Trend as a douche throughout the episode though I saw him as an oblivious, ignoramus that seemed a bit weird toward our hard-working Earth pony Applejack. He can be seen as racist during the line: "Y'know I've always loved the work ethic of Earth ponies," but I honestly don't think that we can draw such a conclusion from one line. I think the line was just a very, very poor attempt at flirting from Trend. Other people say Trend was harassing AJ and being rude to Rarity. I agree, but I think it was due to his aforementioned obliviousness. Overall, I found Trenderhoof to be a bland and uninteresting character that served his purpose; nothing more, nothing less.

Now on to Rarity *cough* best pony *cough* (I'm kidding, though she's my favorite). I at first found her fangirling strange, but I thought about how she reacted to Sapphire Shores and Photo Finish in 'A Dog and Pony Show' and 'Green Isn't Your Color' respectively. I think Rarity was well done and in character during her overreactions. I must say I love how Spike and Rarity interacted this episode. Spike showed great maturity in sticking by Rarity and accepting her crush without objection, it was an admirable display. Tabitha St. Germain never ceases to amaze with her talented voice acting, pulling off a Trans-Atlantic accent doing a bad Southern accent was hilarious in my opinion, but there was more going on in this scene. Rarity was behaving in the manner in which sees AJ, so AJ responded in kind with an interpretation of Rarity that would make her angry to the point where she snaps back to reality. Which leads me to a ok segway that I just fucked up....AJ!

Applejack's down-to-earth dialogue really emphasized the craziness that was Trend and Rarity. Because of this AJ kind of acted as the viewer's voice in several scenes like "Rarity, what are you wearin'?" and "That is the most ridiculous get-up I've ever seen!" Personally, I think AJ was the funniest character throughout the episode (though I find Rural Rarity funnier than Apple Jewel).

All-in-all I think it was a good episode with a good moral and it gets a LIKED IT! on my arbitrary and kind of unnecessary rating scale listed below.

    LOVED IT!
    -LIKED IT!
    MEH
    DISLIKED IT
    HATED IT

Side Note: I also think Pinkie was in character this episode. She was excited and eccentric, which is classic Pinkie.

I may attempt to do this weekly if I receive positive feedback, and will answer any questions you may have for me below! I promise I will read all responses, but it may take a while for me to answer due to other priorities (college, friends, family, etc.).

Hello everybody, I just wanted to talk about what this blog is, and how it will function.

In a nutshell, this will be an informal, unstructured blog about my thoughts on various subjects. It will not run on a concrete schedule and will be updated more on a "if I feel like it" basis. I often have other stuff to do, so I really can't run it on a consistent basis if I tried (which I did). My entries won't have a distinct format, but none of them should feel too alien, so it shouldn't be much of an issue. There will be various topics posted on this blog ranging from ponies to anime to movies to video games and so on. I do have a list of topics that I would like to talk about below if anyone is curious, and I would be happy to have the forums chime in if they so please. Well anyway here's my list of topics that I plan on covering sometime in the next millennium (though it is subject to change):

    Ponies:
    My various episode ideas
    Series-wide scoreboard (post S4 finale)
    Fighting is Magic: Tribute Edition
    Various fan-made content
Where should the show go in the next five years?

    Gaming:
    Infamous: Second Son
    Crash Bandicoot 1-3
    Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage/Gateway to Glimmer
    Various Sonic games
    Various Mario games
Super Smash Bros. Brawl/ Project M

    Anime:
Clannad + After Story (this will probably be coming soon)
    The Melancholy/Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
    Elfen Lied
My laundry list of anime to catch-up on
When is anime fan service too much?

    Cartoons:
    Ed, Edd, 'n' Eddy
    Courage the Cowardly Dog
    Post-movie Spongebob
