  1. Considering a change of my grade system. Rather than consolidate all my F's, I'm thinking of the following:

    • F+ ---> Right below D-. Horrible enough to fail, but not so godawful.
    • F ---> The standard failure. Godawful and unworthy of the support.
    • F- ---> Atrocity. An episode, comic, or movie so fundamentally broken that it deserves to return to the drawing board and never see the airwaves again.

Would the ones getting an F- also deserve to be thrown in the trash and sent to a garbage dump, never to be seen again?

Man, that has got to be a lot of "Teen Titans Go!"; in fact, nearly the entirety of Cartoon Network's whole schedule!

  3. FINALLY, the stage show scene is over! It only took about 7.5 minutes to complete. This scene is one of the worst in the entire series and ruins the rest of the episode that follows. It's spread way too thin, and the pacing is so lethargic that Dopey would be bored to tears.

Trixie is written and portrayed in the episode as the villain, yet Rarity, RD, and AJ behave just as poorly as she. Oh, wait, scratch that, they're worse, because they heckle her and encroach into her show, which the audience clearly enjoyed. If you don't like the show, walk away or provide constructive criticism to improve it. Neither Pinkie nor FS say anything here, which kinda helps them.

Spike is at his most annoying here, and Twilight fears are absolutely justified because of how her friends portrayed magic usage.

Am I the only one who thinks that Rarity, RD and AJ should've been called out by their respective families for heckling Trixie the way they did?

  4. Mr. Enter is a really good animation critic, but his word ain't gospel, and he's not right all the time. His critique of the body swap episodes as a whole is one of them. The "Voices Are Mental" trope isn't inherently a flaw, wasted potential, or lazy, nor is the timing of the swap automatically bad. It's not about the usage of the structure or trope alone that determines what works or doesn't, but how well they execute it instead. The same criticisms and flaws don't universally apply, even if the trope becomes clichéd. Basically, can the writers twist the formula to make it feel like it fits the story they tell?

His main criticisms of Carpet Diem don't make a lick of sense, and give credit to a commentator's defense of it for this mini-review. Gravity Falls doesn't introduce the main source of the conflict early. Usually, the supernatural force appears or occurs deep into Act 1, and the writers weave it into the story to give the characters growth. One of GF's themes is maturation: Dip and Mab are 12-year-old twins with inherent chemistry. Do they get along? Yes. Do they fight? Yes. Here, both of them are at their most immature. Arguing, getting cross at each other, wanting to behave and misbehave to make the other look worse. They acted like brats to start with, and after swapping bodies, they only worsen.

To echo the review from The AV Club, one twist to the formula is both Dipper and Mabel reacted in horror for so,e time and really showed the graphic fright was of their sudden predicament. After that was the childish humor, but then the humor got real dark when Waddles and Soos swapped. GF ain't no stranger to dark humor, and plenty is here. At one point, though, the dark humor of "Soos" roaming aimlessly in the Shack lobby and eating the tissues dragged.

Because both twins were bratty, the consequences they suffered were fantastic. "Mabel" forced to play sleepover with Grenda and Candy Chiu, and "Dipper" learning about sex after getting caught spying on them all through the door lock.

This episode has a lot of chaos, but the chaos during the climax was a zap, and the humor was great.

But where it shines is how the chains of events culminate. Both Mabel and Dipper love each other, and without them beside each other, their bond has no meaning. Their hearts are sliced I'm half. They may be children, but they're growing up, and their childhoods won't last forever.

After some meh episodes, Carpet Diem points GF back on track. :D

  5. Clinton campaign, I have a protip: The Russia boogeyman didn't cost Clinton the election. Who cost her the election? The campaign for colluding with the DNC, sucking up to big corporate interests, Clinton's skeletons in her closet (both recent and otherwise), and Clinton being too egotistical to campaign in Wisconsin and Michigan till it was too late. Trump's win was Clinton's own doing.

But the Clinton campaign has its head so far up its ass that when Brazile outed the collusion, they had the gall to cowardly accuse her of being Putin's lapdog. Russia has already been treated as a Neo-McCarthyist scapegoat for quite some time now to cover up the political process's and the Clinton campaign's own failures. Jesse Ferguson and every idiot who signed his open letter to her made that xenophobic scapegoat a racist one, too.

  9. I don't FIM has ever had such a massive downward quality swing one episode later.

The Perfect Pear is the best episode of the show for being heartwarming, respectful to the audiences, and executing a very daring concept.

The very next episode, Fame and Misfortune, is the worst of S7 and may be in the bottom-five of the series. The more I think about it, the lower and lower the ranking.

    1. Equestrian celebrities harassed and abused, an overly cynical and crass tone that contradicts the show's proactive themes and morale
    2. Long-established background ponies being out of character
    3. All of the (adult) fans are quarter dimensional and represent offensive and nasty geek stereotypes
    4. A broken premise that checks off fandom talking points without contextual sense and attention to continuity
    5. All of the antagonists are Straw Fans/straw characters. Shallowly-written, broken characters designed to be proven wrong out of plot convenience
    6. Two broken morals (the characters singing a loaded statement and suggesting an enforcement of stereotypes is okay to teach to kids)

Yeah, what kind of person would have the gall to send a death threat to a writer over how poorly an episode was written or how poorly a character in the show was portrayed?

Oh, I hope that M.A. Larson doesn't wind up getting hit with any death threats over this episode the same way Amy Keating Rogers was with Filli Vanilli back in Season 4.

  11. Y'know what's really, really sad about this episode? Everyone other than the RM7 and a few fillies is a complete jerk. The brony stereotypes aren't just confined to every adult, but almost all the fillies, too. When so much of the visible pony population is that insufferable, irredeemable, and stereotypical, it creates a false representation that most of these fans (and every adult fan) are like this IRL and that Ponyville itself is mostly like this.

    1. MalekPony

      MalekPony

Did this episode just wind up making bad history as the worst episode in the entire series?

  12. The more I think of the scene outside Suger Cube Corner, the more infuriating it is, and the more I'm baffled it even exists.

The five townsponies that were in this shot are long-established background ponies commonly spotted in Ponyville. About all of them date back back to season one. Sassaflash, Carrot Top, Cherry Berry, and Berry Punch were involved in many activities to help Ponyville or other ponies within the community, including Winter Wrap Up and The Smile Song. The latter is what really gets my goat. Pinkie's voice, melody, and presence are more than enough to cheer them up and make them feel happy.

    "YOU'VE KNOWN ME FOR YEARS!"

Glad you said this, Pinkie, 'cause, DHX, that doesn't make this scene okay! In fact, it makes it worse. Them knowing her for years and suddenly acting like complete jackasses does nothing but implicate that their happiness before Pinkie and happiness after Pinkie brightened their days is merely a façade. It's so out of character of the show's welcoming atmosphere and progressive morale.

I think I might've found yet another reason why that lame and stupid "it's for kids" excuse is NOT gonna cut it at all.

  13. Aside from Music to My Ears, the three post-RR shorts, and Fall of Sunset mini-comic, the majority of EQG (and all of the films) sucks. Broken worldbuilding (they can't even establish a solid background for Equestrian magic), poor pacing, stereotypical characters, characters acting flanderized or out of character, shoddy villains, and lazy writing choices put a complete damper on Equestria Girls. If most of Equestria Girls is bad, there's no point for me to look forward to it.

Did the EQG stuff get so bad that you'd refuse to watch it ever again unless those people get their stuff together and clean up their act?

  18. Finished the episode last night.

    Spoiler

The characterizations of both Celestia and Luna are bastardized, and continuity dating back to the pilot had to be completely disregarded in order for the story and moral to work.

The only saving grace is Starlight. Her actions had consequences, and those consequences piled on to the point of giving her so much grief to the point of nearly damaging her psyche. She shows how much she cares, and her nightmares show contriteness for the conflict.

If the Royal Sisters' characterization was taken a lot more care of, this episode would've been a whole lot better. Instead, it's the season's biggest disappointment so far.
