Your first drawing? Ever? Well for your first drawing it's pretty good! The main problems with it is the anatomy and the cutie mark. If you want to be better at drawing ponies you should always use reference pics. Overall this drawing isn't bad at all.

Hehe, of course I'm open to criticism. How else am I supposed to get better? I commend your bravery...

I used the GIMP, which should be capable of a lot more than I've done with it. The picture was actually pencildrawn, then I took a photo of said drawing and after several failed attempts to extract the pencil lines I decided to trace the whole thing with the pencil tool using a touchpad on my netbook... so thing just went from bad to worse as I got more and more frustrated with thr darn thing. Now, my question is, is there a better way to extract a pencil drawing?

Hmm, a better way to extract lines? Well as a tablet owner, I would say it's hard to do decent lineart without one. If you wanted to make your lineart by hand, that is. But instead of buying an expensive tablet you should probably use curve tools and/or try vectoring your drawing?

You should only ever buy a tablet if you're 100% serious about becoming an artist because they're super expensive ;-;

Aww!  Why, thank you very much!   I still keep to my advice though, to go with deerkittens! It feels like she can do a better job, I'm a lazy bum when it comes to coloring and shading properly.

Wow, you've improved quite a bit! When I compare my old art to my new art, I'm always surprised at how much I've improved.

If you just keep practising, your art will fix itself, I guess? When it comes to art, there's always things you need to correct.

I like the shading on your newer art, but the eyes are a bit blurry. Did you intend to make them blurry because the pony had glasses on? If you did I don't think there's a need to blur them, because glasses don't make your eyes look irregular. 

Another thing I've noticed is that you have clean lines, and your linework is great. They're smooth and aren't all over the place. 

Overall your art is amazing, keep up the good work!
