AAAAanyways, I'm not here to ramble on.
I'm here to give you guys advice!
"Why do we want advice from you?" you might ask. Ha! Obviously because... Hmm... Good question. I'm gonna go with you don't, for now. So turn back now. Consider this a warning.
Next Gen stories. If you write one, will we, (the rest of the fandom), read it?
It depends. First of all, I can tell you to brace yourself. While most of the people in the fandom are quite patient and willing to accept something that is outside of their preferences, there are quite a few temperamental bipedals out there who wouldn't hesitate to hate on you and your idea. Ships especially. If you ship SoarinDash and someone else ships SoarinJack or SoarinFire or SpitDash or AppleDash or TwiDash or PinkieDash or SpikeDash or CaramelDash or ApplepiexSoarin or whatever insane Dash/Soarin ships there are out there, there will be controversy and hate that goes around. Well guess what? You can't please everyone. So don't start a fight. If there is hate, be patient. Don't fan the flames.
Secondly, please, please, pleasepleaseplease PLEASE don't turn these characters into Mary Sues. They must have vice to balance out the virtues. Again, I'm gonna use SoarinDash as an example. (If you can't tell, I really love them, but don't let my opinion sway you.) Let's say you make them a child name Jet.
Jet is the fastest pony around. He has his mother's hair, his dad's emerald eyes, and a dark blue coat that matches Soarin's mane. He us super handsome, and all the mares love him and want to be his marefriend. He is the bestest flyer around, even better than his parents combined! He made the Wonderbolts when he was just a colt, and is now the supreme commander. He is a loyal pony like his mom, full of sass and humour, and loves pie like his dad. He is really smart like his auntie Twilight, kind like auntie Fluttershy, daring like his auntie Scootaloo, generous like Rarity, has an amazing voice like Sweetie Belle, strong and honest like auntie Applejack, funny like auntie Pinkie Pie, but he isn't like Apple Bloom because she is worst pony. This is the story of his adventure.
^ Right there. The foundations of a horrible story. Don't Mary Sue/Gary Stu your characters. Make them well rounded.
Let's try this again:
When Rainbow Dash discovered she was pregnant with little Jet, she had to quit the Wonderbolts to take care of her little baby. Jet is a dark blue furred pegasus with a rainbow mane like his momma and green eyes like his dad. He is a great flyer, but has a short temper. He is the town pretty boy, but has the reputation of being a player. He doesn't have much ambition to do much, however, and after quitting the Wonderbolts, that flame died even more. He is a huge prankster like his mom, and is quite smart; he just doesn't show it much. Being the son of the Element of Loyalty, he is extremely devoted to his friends, but is willing to sacrifice anything for them, even willing to sacrifice the world. Literally.
The second is a better description than the first one, as you can see. (Sorry, I'm a bit lacking in the writing department. Editing? No problem. I just can't seem to organize my jumbled nonsense into something comprehensible. But I digress) The second summary of Jet is a little better, balancing virtue with vice. Sometimes, it's alright to tip the scales, and give them more negative parts of their personality for the sake of character building. Or, in the case of Jet's devotion to his friends, you can bury a vice within a virtue, or vice versa. (Ha, see what I did there?! ...I'll show myself the door)
Tl;dr, Brace yourself for the hate that may come, and remember to balance out your characters. I'm pretty sure that these things should assist you in your success (But what do I know?) And I wish you good luck!
