  1. Best? Hard to say, as has already been mentioned every season has it's highlights. For me though, I'd have to pick season four, because of 'Hearts Strong as Horses', 'Let the Rainbow Remind You', and 'You'll Play Your Part'. The fact that the last song on that list is the first of only a very few occasions where we get to hear Princess Luna sing basically justifies choosing season four by itself.
  2. Banned for assuming they were eaten and aren't just floating around in 1233 jars of formaldehyde in some warehouse in a largely abandoned industrial estate.
  3. So many choices! (and such riches aplenty). This fandom has produced a prodigious amount of excellent songs, but for me there are two artists that stand out particularly, and neither of them will be surprising or controversial to most people. The first being Prince Whateverer, whom I was lucky enough to see perform 'Between Fairytales and Happy Endings' (among others) at UK Ponycon a few years back. I was happy to find his work on Bandcamp and bought his entire back catalogue which has been on my MP3 player ever since. The other, who takes the top spot for me, would have to be Ponyphonic. Perhaps not the most prolific musician in the fandom but responsible for some really great songs that I've bought from Bandcamp and listen to regularly. 'The Moon Rises' is easily one of my favourite songs, and not just MLP related ones at that. I'm sure everyone can tell what that leaves for the top spot. 'Lullaby for a Princess' is a genuinely beautiful song that can still bring a tear to my eye even all these years later.
  4. The first season of Strike Witches. Decent enough story, nothing particularly complicated but done well enough, with lots of fan service. Some really great characters and whole bunch of fan service and plenty of really well executed action scenes all topped off with a heavy dose of fan service. Did I mention the fan service? There's rather a lot of that. The war on pants never ends. If you liked Girls Und Panzer then you'd probably like Strike Witches. The two are basically spiritual siblings with a similar tone and visual style, and that same slightly bizarre feel that manages to keep the whole thing fairly light, humorous and above all, fun. I'm led to believe the characters for both series were designed by the same person, which given the stylistic similarities would certainly fit. For this series though, the cuteness factor has been turned up to eleven by the girls propensity to sprout animal ears and tails when they're getting their magic on. Unlike Girls Und Panzer though, this one is perhaps not quite suitable to be watching with your parents or younger siblings as there is a reasonable amount of partial nudity, a few fairly suggestive scenes and a just insane amount of vertical panning shots of the main characters just in case you somehow forgot that none of them are wearing trousers. Ultimately, a pleasant way to pass a bit of time, and I'll definitely be starting season two soon.
  5. This rather lovely figure of Jibril the Flugel from 'No Game No Life', or more specifically, the film 'No Game No Life Zero'.
  6. Perhaps not technically a recent purchase, I preordered it quite some time ago, but it just arrived in the post today and it looks amazing. Now she's parked on top of my display cabinets (won't fit inside) next to Cheetara.
  7. Waterworld. This is a film that I've always though was unfairly maligned. I have heard previously that much of the trend of crapping on this film came from Hollywood not appreciating the fact that Kevin Costner apparently didn't play by the rules (whatever that means) when producing some of his films, like this one, Dances With Wolves and others. Whatever industry politics may have been going on the background, the film itself is a perfectly serviceable post apocalyptic action flick that can probably be described as Mad Max with a boat.
  8. Banned for not watching Reign Of Fire, in which there is altogether too much dragon.
  9. The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! This series was a lot of fun to watch. The titular character was completely over the top, but in the most endearing way and I thoroughly enjoyed her consistent failure to restore the Dark Realm.
  10. This is Dark Angel Olivia, one of those rare occasions when I bought a figure without any prior attachment to, or even knowledge of, the property itself. She's from a game called Rage Of Bahamut, which I have never played, but I fell in love with figure when I saw it up for preorder. She is absolutely beautiful and now resides in a place of great prominence on the bookshelf in my living room.
  11. I'm currently reading book 2 of 'No Game No Life'. Since it looks like we may never get a second season of the anime I've turned to the books to find out how the story continues.
  12. If I may be so bold as to speak for the people saying politics would turn them off, what I expect most people mean is that we don't mind our entertainment exploring political themes, but we draw the line when it becomes blatantly partisan and reduces itself to nothing more than propaganda for one political party or the other. That would certainly be the case for me. Other issues might be if they make the series look like a follow-on from G4 but then completely undo all of the lore that was established in the previous series. I'd like to see some continued world building that deepens the knowledge of Equestria that we already have. The art style is also pretty important for me, and for that very reason I'm pretty much already out on the 2D series because I can't stand that bland, generic calarts style. I am looking forward to the 3D series though, I really liked the look of the film and can't wait to see more like that.
  13. Rainbow Dash every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
  14. I'm going to give it a pass. I'm not a fan of the art style at all and there are more better looking cartoons in existence that I already don't have time to watch without adding something that doesn't appeal to me to a list that is already too long. If the 3D version is good I may revisit that decision at a later date, but for the moment I'm in no rush to watch it.
  15. You cannot just blanket state that character designs don't matter. Animation is a visual medium. How important that aspect of a cartoon is will vary from person to person. You may not consider character design to be an important aspect of a cartoon but plenty of other people may not enjoy a cartoon with what they deem to be an unappealing visual style or characters that they consider flat and ugly. If you ask a blind man if the character designs matter to him he will probably say no. Ask a deaf man and you may find that the visual side matters to him a lot more. Yes you can. If you know from previous experience that you don't like aubergine and you look at a meal and see that it consists largely of aubergine, then you can safely make an assessment that you will not like that meal.
  16. Cult of Chucky. The seventh film in the Child's Play franchise and the last one before the remake of the original film. This one follows on from 'Curse of Chucky' and like that film this one was less focused on the comedy that was prevalent in both 'Bride of Chucky' and 'Seed of Chucky' and returned back to the straight slasher/horror of the first three films. Brad Dourif, of course, voices Chucky, as he has done in every film except the remake, and his daughter Fiona Dourif once again plays the primary protagonist Nica from the previous film, and Alex Vincent reprises the role of Andy that he first played in the 1988 original. Despite it's more serious tone this film still has plenty of humour, although it is more situational. An example is the fact that the film is set in a psychiatric institution and Chucky, a doll possessed by a psychopathic serial killer, realising that for once he is not the craziest person in the room. It was a pretty decent film on the whole, and to anyone not familiar with the Child's Play franchise I would strongly recommend all seven films.
  17. Currently reading 'Mythago Wood' by Robert Holdstock. It's pretty good so far and the premise is quite different from anything else I've read. Basically this guy lives near a very strange patch of woodland which seems to defy normal time and space, and anyone that spends long enough in proximity to this woodland gradually produces entities called Mythagos, first as little more than a presence in their peripheral vision but eventually fully formed physical beings often taken from human folklore and mythology. I wasn't familiar with the author or any of his other work, the book was given to me by a colleague at work who thought I might enjoy it, and so far he was totally correct in his assumption.
  18. The 2D series does look pretty awful. This flat, generic calarts style of animation just needs to hurry up and die. The 3D version on the other hand, if they can match (or even come close to) the quality from the film then it should be pretty good.
  19. Bear in mind that the cast for the film were moderately big name film actors. It's not purely a matter of whether or not Hasbro can afford to keep them on, these people probably don't want to be tied into voice acting for a series that may last for years. Even though voice work can be squeezed in between other projects it's still a burden they probably don't want to be carrying around, as such a commitment is unlikely to work in their favour when they are applying for other roles.
  20. Kai Play Arts Aerith to go with the Tifa and Barrett I already have, just waiting on Cloud being released now.
