  1. Oh, hope I don't sound rude here. 暇つぶし (himatsubushi) would be a synonym to this, and this is just based on my experience having spent many summers in Japan but people use himatsubushi more often than jikantsubushi.
  2. Man learning to draw is harder than I thought...... I mean I knew it was going to be hard to begin with, but still it is HARD.

  3. Read the title? You have? Good, cause when I say "one tiny detail" I really do mean "one tiny detail". I understand the video was posted a little more than a week ago. Please forgive me if I aren't up to date on the latest MLP stuff - a lot of the people I know won't take well if they found out I'm a brony so I'm having to kinda "stay in the closet" if you will. If you haven't seen MangaKamen's video, well I'll have it here, though I will warn you. SPOILER ALERT The video does contain some content that discusses a little bit about a future episode of MLP that was apparently leaked. Now I don't think it's a big spoiler, but it is nonetheless a spoiler. If you want to go into this not knowing anything about it, I recommend you not watch the video. I've even put it in three spoiler tags to make sure that someone doesn't accidentally click on the video and play it. Now, for those of you who chose not to watch the video, you'll notice that MangaKamen used the word "otaku" several times, including in the title of the video. Many of you will be familiar with the word "otaku" as a word originating in the Japanese language, and you probably think it means "anime fan" as MangaKamen does. I will acknowledge right now that in the west, that is what the word has come to mean. However, in Japanese that's not exactly true. The Japanese word "otaku" actually is something like this: Sidenote, while I didn't copy-past that from a dictionary, I did use a website called jisho.org for reference. Also, that stuff in the brackets is IPA, you'll know what that is if you're in to linguistics but otherwise it doesn't matter. Now, that is the literal definition of the word otaku, but that doesn't capture the full meaning of that word. First off, in Japanese the word otaku is not just restricted to anime/manga fans. Anyone can be an otaku of anything. There are train otaku's, car otaku's, toy otaku's, computer otaku's, if there is something that people are a fan of chances are you can find an otaku of that. Secondly, in Japanese the word otaku has a strong negative connotation. When you use it in Japanese, you don't use it to mean someone who is simply a fan of something, you are talking about someone who is obsessed with something. Usually obsessed with that something to the point where they won't leave their home (hence the dfact that it's derived from お宅 meaning "your home") or to an otherwise unusual degree. There is a reason why when you ask the average Japanese person what their image of an Otaku is they'll usually shoot back with an image like this one: Click here if you're sure you want to see it. Now, chances are this stereotype is blatantly false, but the point is that this is what many people in Japan think of when they hear the word "otaku". I'm not going to say "stop using the word otaku in the wrong way", because first off that's none of my freaking business, and secondly when one language borrows a word form another language the meaning is usually tweaked a little bit. That said, I will ask that if you actually made it through this massive wall of text you at least be aware of the original meaning of the word. Made it past the wall of text? Congradulations! You get a muffin! Click the spoiler for it!
  4. Regarding the ads in Skype - I'll admit it could be worse, but it's still an annoyance for me (might not be for other people). The last straw for me was when I was playing a game of Civ V with a friend voice chatting through Skype. Suddenly, on my end, the call was interrupted by an ad which had video AND AUDIO. For a few moments I looked stupid while I scrambled to get the ad to stop, and about half an hour later I was scrambling again as another video ad with audio had popped up. Now, to be fair to Skype, this happened a few years ago when they were first getting started with ads, and it only happened once or twice and hasn't happened since. Still, it left enough of a bad taste in my mouth that I'd avoid using Skype if only I could. That seems to be the issuie I'm having at the moment. I want to switch to LINE completely and stop using Skype, but all my friends here in the USA use either Skype or FaceBook and really aren't open to making a LINE account by reason of "I have Skype so what's the point". On the other hand, all my friends in Japan use LINE, but they rarely get in touch with me nowadays so that doesn't really help any.
  5. Title says all. Is there anyone here besides me that uses LINE? It's basically the same thing as Skype, but I prefer LINE because LINE has no ads on it. Well, they do have ads, but not in the same way that Skype does it. Skype is very in-your-face about their ads, LINE, well they prefer to have the "ads" be more in the form of offers with LINE Coins as rewards (eg, "watch this video and get 1 LINE Coin", or "download this app and get 10 LINE Coins"). LINE is very popular in Japan, but not really well known outside of Japan. And for those of you wondering, yes I do have a LINE account myself. I may or may not share my LINE ID to people if they ask, just not on a public post over here.
  6. HOLY CRAP! I now have a verified LINE Japan account even though I live in the USA!

  7. Sorry about the late reply, school came along. I would've been on more often but while my RL friends know I watch MLP, they still think that I'm not all that into it and for now I'd like to keep it that way. It would be great if you're still willing to do that for me though! I haven't gotten as far as I would like on the story though, still working on the first chapter. If you'd like I'll let you know when I get to a point where proofreading would be good.
  8. So, I've decided to work on a story just for the fun of it, inspired by the anime Gosick and the anime Senkou no Night Raid (dubbed "Night Raid 1931" in English-speaking countries, even though that's not even close to an accurate translation). Originally I was going to ask for the help of a different guy from England, but that guy is taking his time to answer my request so I fighted I may as well ask around to see if anyone else is willing. OH YEAH, THIS IS A REQUIREMENT: You ABSOLUTELY MUST be proficient in British English. Modern British English will be fine, though British English as it was in the 1930's would be preferable. The title of the story is "This Rotten War" (Japanese: この腐った戦争, ''kono kusatta sensō''). Basic plot is as follows: The date is Shōwa 6 (1931), February 3rd. The place is London, England. Hideaki Takamura is from a Japanese milirary family living in Hiroshima, Japan. Having proven himself with an exceptional academic record, and due to last-ditch attempts by a small minority in the Japanese government to repair the fragmenting relationship between the United Kingdom and Japan, is allowed to attend the Saint Victoria University (a fictional university) in London, England. Upon ariving in the school, he comes across Avril Gillan, a local girl belonging to a wealthy family. The two of them quickly find a common point, solving mysteries, and start working together to solve local school "mysteries". The two become very close and things seem to be going smoothly, that is until.... Shōwa 6 (1931), September 18th, Kwantung Army orchestrates the Mukden Incident. Shōwa 6 (1931), September 19th, Kwantung Army invades Manchuria. Presented with a ''fait accompli'', the Japanese government has little choice but to reinforce (and, in effect, support) the Kwantung Army. Relations between Japan and the west start to deteriorate to a new low, and Hideaki and Avril are caught in the middle of it all. You might be wondering why I'm asking you about this. Well, put simply, I'm not English. I don't know much of any British English. Seriously, the extent of my knowledge can be summarized as "you spell stuff differently, have a accent different from the US and say "bonnet" instead of "hood" and "lift" instead of "elevator"". If you're willing to help, please let me know. PS: I am aware that there is huge variation within British English. I won't be too picky, anyone that knows how English is spoken in England is fine, though since the story is based in London that's the kind of English that I'm looking for.
  9. Sometimes I listen to lyrics, sometimes I don't. It really depends on the song and the mood I'm in at the time. When I listen to songs that aren't in English or Japanese, I generally ignore the lyrics since I don't understand them. Otherwise, I usually pay attention to them.
  10. Oh god......... I had to watch that nightmare fuel at night...... it's 5 AM and I still can't sleep..... BAD MISTAKE.

  11. Well, it's August 6th where I live and I don't have enough money to go to Hiroshima. So, might as well do this.

  13. Well, time for me to get serious about drawing my ponysona..... but first, I need to learn the basics of drawing! ....... yeah, right now I suck at drawing.

  14. Just did the pony personality test and I'm apparently closest to Rainbow Dash....... huh, never would've guessed.

  15. You know what, why not. My skype: tsukuyomi-mlp When adding please, PLEASE let me know you're from the forum. I've had some people with weird avatars try to add me, and I've gone ahead and blocked them cause I don't want to see any of that stuff. I don't want to be accidentally blocking people who just want to be a friend.
  16. another day over, another waaaay late bedtime for me. night guys!

  17. Interesting opinion, I hadn't even considered the illusion part but I like it. I'm working on a drawing for it. Don't expect it to be done anytime soon though since (to put it bluntly) I suck at drawing, but I'm working on it. I'd still love to hear other opinions!
  18. OH LORD! LOST TRACK OF TIME! Whelp, it's waaay past for me to sleep. Goodnight everypony!

  20. Well, this will be interesting. I don't remember exactly when I became a brony, but I do remember what season was airing when I first got into it. It was season 2, sometime inbetween the middle to end of it (I remember eagerly waiting for "A Canterlot Wedding"). So, going by the dates that Wikipedia says the season aired, sometime between January and March of 2012 would be my best guess. As for how it happened: Basically, one of my best friends has a younger brother. A few years ago, when we were both in high school, I found out that he was into MLP. My first reaction was "interesting" and thought nothing more of it. The very next day someone walks in and gives him a Pinky Pie T-shirt. To my surprise, he (metaphorically) ripped off his previous shirt and put on the new shirt right then and there. Since this was the last person wom I expected to be in to My Little Pony, I decided to give the series a shot. After all, if the last person in the world you thought would like the series liked the series what harm could it do? Then, all of a sudden I found my self going through episode after episode after episode. Went through seasons 1 and 2 in a few days, and had to stop only when I caught up to where season 3 was at.
  21. and finally got around to adding more stuff on my profile - though YouTube refuses to play nice with me.

  22. Here in Hawaii it's illegal to put a coin in you're ear...... Don't ask me why, it just is........ It's one of those laws that are on the books but aren't really enforced.
  23. So yeah, I'm posting here mainly because I need to bump ideas off people and figure out what would be good or not. Basically, I want to draw a ponysona for myself. I'd be using this for the avatar on this site (and possibly in the sig too) as well as deviantart, and I would also put it in my YouTube vids and whatnot. This character will NOT be used in things like RP's or fanfics. Now, I really aren't worried too much about being original. All I really want was for it to look good and reflect my Japanese heritage. Originally, I was just going to go with some unicorn with kanji for a cutie mark, but I couldn't think of a design that really satisfies me. Then I randomly had an idea, what better way to reflect my Japanese heritage than to use a creature from Japanese mythology! The series has a LOT of mythological creatures in it so why the heck not? I had the idea of having my ponysona be a kitsune. For those of you who don't know what a kitsune is, or are too lazy to hit that link, "kitsune" is the Japanese word for "fox". However, in Japan the word "kitsune" can mean one of two things: a normal fox, or the foxes of Japanese mythology that are said to posses great intelligence and magical powers. In this context, I'm referring to the foxes of Japanese mythology. Now as for color scheme, I haven't decided yet. However, I'm probably not going to go with the standard color scheme depicted in Japan for the kitsune (white fur with a bit of red on the eye's and ears) and am probably going to use some other colors. So, I'm just wondering what people think of this idea.
