  1. In this case I actually just work with the layer on "Color" mode in photoshop above the current image.Because the B&W values should be enough for my lightness/brightness. It just needs a hue(colour) with a saturation level. In this case a very low saturation because I'm working towards a softer look. In my Applejacks I had quite high saturation in the darker and average lightness areas (and less at the lighted parts) But also a big difference that this is a scene, rather than a single character. So I'll apply higher saturation where the focus point lies. Also more detail etc. Unless I end up changing that idea on the go But for this one I'll generally try to keep a low saturation, because of the light effect I want to get throughout the image washing out the colours and because I just want to try that Plenty of works like this with high saturation, it's just what you'd prefer. I'll probably do some general studies for the colours, testing out different saturations, soon. Too see if I got the values right, the B&W image still needs plenty of work anyway. And I could probably work directly with colours, but ok... I guess I don't this time And when finding out a colour just doesn't work I can always go back and adjust the brightness.
  2. Yes, once I start with the colour, I'll probably start of adding a layer on top and block out the different colours, see how well they fit on the current black/white values and adjust them on the go.I already foresee some issues when it comes to the Dark parts of especially Luna and her guards. She doesn't really have enough contrast, specifically her necklace (which should be rather black compared to her coat) and the guard's helmets. Then of course also getting a proper focal point in both the values and colour, some depth, detail, light etc. but that's for later on First I'll work out the rest of the sketch later this day, giving the Griffons some shape. So far it has been great fun taking this different approach.
  3. Add more monkeys. The only monkeys we have seen are those at the Gala. I'd probably make them Mute Monkeys though... not sure if talking monkeys would work and not sure what kind of monkeys either, in the sense of just pets, or big families in the forest, or an entire hidden civilization of Monkeys?! Oh and Bananas. Like secretly have every primary character eat a banana in the span of an entire season
  4. In the digital world? Monkey In the real world? Monkey ok wait... uh, lets do that again for real Digital I usually go under AIMonkey, AssasinMonkey or the combination of the 2 AIAssasinMonkey. I often try to be AIMonkey if available, I like it for its shorter length. Though I find it quite funny how I got an unintentional sentence in AssasinMonkey which I sometimes use. Ass as in Monkey. It makes no sense I know, but that's me, I make no sense. And an Ass? well, could be right in its different meanings. I have one, I can be one and I can also be the other one? In real life though... I don't really have one, except that people call me Monkey for trying to be a Monkey Doesn't help that I make monkey sounds, or eating bananas like a monkey... or both PS: or Game characters I have a complete other set of nickname (guidelines) though. If I can name them I will probably never name them any of the mentioned monkey names.
  5. Thank you and thanks for reminding me of that art Oh gawd, the eyes Thanks.Glad to hear you like it, sorry to hear I made another casualty
  6. Ooh, for those wondering about Deer, it seems it almost got made into the show (unreleased episode concept from Lauren Faust) Starting at 6:15, it's mentioned Lauren Faust had an idea for an episode which was never made, involving a Pony who grew up with a family of Deer in White Tail Wood. No info on whether the Deer were sentient or not though Does make me wonder if the current team would be considering to implement Deer in an episode in some form or way.
  7. I guess it's one of the faster ways to get someone's feelings out. Also since they probably had a good experience with the community already, it might help them like a therapy. Leaving the bad things there while being happier in other places If it helps the ones reading it? maybe not, but ok, it could Though a bit of happy thoughts on the front page status list can't hurt I guess and as for my own status. I keep plenty of things for myself, to see what it does to me, but my public side usually sets loose, crazy, weird, complex or personal humour on the go Or just an update...
  8. Something from a different scale this time And thought I'd share in progress versions this time. Sharing the adventure on a somewhat different style than usual. One I usually take when making full illustration like pieces. even though I haven't done those in a while, let alone get them out the sketching stage. Something I always noticed is how I work with very high contrast when doing my character designs. They contain almost pure black parts. But I've always had an interest in doing that differently. Though I do still like either way. Probably also look higher because everything is focused on 1 character instead of spread out like this one. Treading outside the mane 6 once again. I think the only other non-mane 6 I made was Applebloom Or well... something else than Applejack when looking at the past weeks Anyhow... basically first time doing Luna and Celestia + the royal guards and Griffons, so a bunch of them at once. Wanted to make a bit more dynamic piece, so I thought about something like a war. And because I have been thinking about all the different species and civilizations lately in FiM, and the just released Canon map, I thought about the Griffon. Since their main civilization seemed off on a different continent, I expected them to possibly have a first encounter... and with all those Sci-fi war stories, I thought... huhm yea sure. For those curious, Photoshop, Standard Brush only, 3500x2500 px (so that makes these 30% of the original) Of course if you'd like to know more, feel free to ask Please, enjoy Colour theory is a hard thing to master, same goes for lighting, though they tend to go hand in hand, especially with these kind of things. Links to update posts: Update 1: (WIP3.5 + 4) Update 2: (WIP4.5 +5) Update 3: (Final) Final: WIP: The old seperate WIPs:
  9. Some very good points. Actually never really looked at it like that, made me realize some things. If I'll be missing out on focus for individual pieces like that I'll probably stick to having them for individual projects rather than a collective work. (DeviantArt functions just fine for that as well) I'd prefer a more critical view on my works. At least here on the forums, since it's easier to discuss than on DA. Which is what forums are better at anyway I think it's also easier to manage from both sides. I know how it feels to update a single thread with new stuff. It's hard to keep in organized. Let alone reading/looking through it all. And it's great to hear my work is being of use as well, for what its worth. Makes me think about the chain of artists. As I get inspired by others, I do also hope I get to inspire others. Anyhow, I'll probably keep it at single topics. Also considering when posting WIPs, that's already a bunch of images for 1 thread. Let alone if it were bunch of WIPs for different works. And I'll probably not post single WIP images on DA as much, only reels/sheets like I did here with AJ. Thanks for the input, I needed a different perspective, it changed my thoughts
  10. Thanks, I appreciate it PS: General question to all: Thinking about making a collective art thread for my works, updating it as I go. Would probably be better? Not sure why I didn't already though , I'll maybe kick it off with some WIP of what I'm working on now
  11. Thanks indeed my second work on EQD, And both are Applejacks It's really nice seeing my stuff up there and if it brings more love for Applejack, even better
  12. I like it as it gives me an outlet and an indirect one that is. I'm generally a lot more comfortable with indirect communication. And ... I tend to have big walls of text, which I find easier to manage (or post...) on a forum. and what better place than a forum with an awesome (MLP in general) community and ... Ponies Though I'm always wary of using "love"
  13. I really liked doing something different with the hooves, thanks And I think I slightly overdid that on the tail. It was also the part that was least finished ... or well, the end of the tail Me and my quick fixes
  14. For me both ways work. I kind of enjoy watching it switch from hat and no hat or the other way around. Like with the Season 2 finale, how she kept putting on her hat when wearing a dress Loved that little detail.
  15. I wanted to her sing a song so badly, I failed to think about what it could be.... Well besides Apples and Sweet Apple Acres that is I'm so waiting for her song. Though for what it would be about. Plenty of possibilities perhaps if you think about it. Maybe something about Honesty but not being honest, but breaking it in some way. (like where she didn't have a choice) But ok... I'd be happy with anything AJ comes with
  16. Thank you The WIPs don't really show it, but I was so afraid I couldn't get the right colour, I changed it so much But I eventually had to stop myself changing it So it's nice to hear I made a good choice there
  17. So, for those who have previously read I was working on Applejack while getting distracted with little Filly Applejacks. Here it is. Kind of cut of my progress and finished it. The time I spent on this has became so fragmented because of other projects, weird week, deadlines, that sort of things. And it became just extremely experimental I think, or at least it feels like it. So I didn't have a clear idea of what I was trying to do for the final piece. Was afraid to end up with a too long project involving just one piece. (I'm such a quickie concept artist type just trying to get my ideas out first and foremost) Anyhow, I did plan on sharing the different steps from the process with you all. Hope you enjoy and feel free to ask or say or anything Because at the moment... I'm not sure how it actually turned out
  18. She was actually made canon with the Trading Cards. I think it was card number 27, she was together with DJ Pon-3 on itIf I had a picture ready I'd post it because I know there are pictures of them Edit: These will have to do: But ok, I think even if they were not Canon, you could still be obsessed
  19. They managed to get paid in sweet apple pies for just doing what they do, stampeding around the plains, and not destroying Appleloosa in the processSeems like a sweet deal to me
  20. Ooh, I overlooked that one. Probably does mean something like the white tailed deer. Perhaps we'll indeed see them appear in Season 3 in some way (since I don't think they've been seen anywhere yet) those could be great. Now I just thought about them just standing there, chewing away, going "Eyep" Big Mac style. Ah, I checked and there indeed seems to be a goat when the Best Pet Song begins. Just standing there, chewing.Leads me to believe they're treated more like the Cattle. Maybe even less then that and more like how Fluttershy interacts with her animal friends just checked back on Iron Will's goats as well, they just make goat noises when they "talk" to him All animals are just such capable creatures in FiM already ... except for the fish
  21. I'm so bad when it comes to cooking existing recipes. Because I never cook existing recipes It's the same as with my art perhaps, I experiment so much, even if I intend not to. Up to the point where I think... why am I eating this? But even if it's bad I'll try to eat it, at least till I'm full Can't do it too much though, because I'm making a mess of the kitchen every time I do cook And I find it hard to get up and make an effort cooking I end up with fast foods like Noodles though that can be fairly "healthy", put some veggies with it, an egg or something and it becomes a real meal PS:... I need to gain weight. I just hit my lowest weight point of the year, so if it's healthy for others, maybe not "healthy" for me Today I made experimental Quesadillas, so tasty but I burned bit of my hair on my hand in the process.... Tested out different kinds of cheese, too bad I couldn't find proper goat cheese. Had just regular rasped cheese and mozzarella, tried with different potatoes (sweet and normal) just some garlic and random chicken. and some spring onion all over. Wanted to try more, but I got full and I don't want to waste anything
  22. My brain, I think I shut it down... again

  23. (...edit: it's getting huge., if you want you can skip till the "ANYHOW", I'm kind of ranting here perhaps) This is just my thoughts, by no means I want to put you on the wrong path. I just hope it could be of help, Sorry if my text is hard to digest. I find it hard to pinpoint where I began with drawing. I know I was colouring from an early age, not within the lines but instead adding my own lines Today drawing is actually what I inspire to do "professionally", but it wasn't like that until the end of high school. I just began with things I like, or bend things I had to do for school into things I'd like to draw. experimenting and all. It's good if you manage to take the first step into drawing, then you only need to keep on drawing to keep improving yourself. There are plenty of things you could think about, some general tips in the ways you think, to the techniques you use or inspiration you seek/find or even the medium you want to use (pencil is probably the most general way, as opposed to watercolour for example.) You can combine things like basic anatomy with specific styles or take them separately. Like you can practice drawing just straight lines from your elbow. (uninterrupted lines) or practice drawing circles and use those to create complete works. Or you can practice purely on getting proportions right. Or learning a specific animal or object, or even surface! (shiny metal is different than dirt) Or just dive straight into a drawing to measure how "good" you are right now, and seek criticism about it to help you improve. One big thing and one of my favourite thoughts we all should probably try to achieve is to "Kill your darlings". It helps to prevent getting stuck with a "precious" drawing. Finding a balance in working it out too far, thinking it's never finished. One day you have to say "this is good for what it is" but also use it as a guide to improve yourself and think about how you can do it better next time! ANYHOW, where should you start? It's hard for someone else to tell you that I think, but to give you something to work with or guide to the way you could think about it. PS: A sketchbook is very useful, but remember it's not about having good drawings in it (always nice though), it's an extension to your brain, a place to save your ideas. (I admit I don't really use one myself though .....) What do you like, is it everything between "( )" being a general idea behind it as it can go Very Very deep, but it can help to start very thinking very broad Architecture (buildings, bridges, cities?) Environments (landscapes, mountains, forests, nature?) Plants (trees, flowers) Animals [Mamals] (cats, dogs, elephants?) Animals [insects] (Beetles, Butterflies, bees) Animals [water] (Sharks, Whales, crabs, squid) Animals [Extinct] (Dinosaurs, mammoths, sabertooth cat) Humans (positions, faces, limbs, anatomy) Clothing (fashion, clothes, boots, hats) Instruments/tools/technology (weapons, contraptions, machines, robots) *Creatures (myths, fantasy, sci-fi, mutants) Ponies (because ponies) Interfaces (Sci-fi screen, computer interface, websites) * it might be wise to combine "creatures" with existing animals, using those as reference. maybe even just stick to normal animals first before you Bend reality into fantasy. Ok... this list can go on and on, there are plenty more I could add, but just to give you something Then there's sub-sections where you can get into. Proportions (mostly for lifeforms that is important, what size is everything, like head and legs) Anatomy (What parts do they have? hooves, practice hooves, hands practice hands etc.) *Style (what kind of look do you want it to have? Cartoon, or realistic) Perspective (is your world flat? how can your portrait a 3D environment on a 2D surface) Emotion (how do you show certain emotions? when is someone happy or sad) **Pose (how can the body move/stand) **Scenes (Recreating scenes or events in a world. Like a battle, or simply shopping?) Silhouette Technique (Drawing steady lines, straight lines, perfect circles) * Style is something you develop over time as well, But using very broad terms like Cartoon or realistic to start could help** would probably need proportions and anatomy for this, but if you have an idea and want to sketch it to help you remember, GO for it. That's what sketchbooks should be, a collection of ideas you Could go on with this one as well, but it's maybe best to start with the basics, the foundation of what you want to make. Like proportions, anatomy, perspective. Basically everything you might use together to create more. And then I could give you another list, the way you could actually start drawing. From mind (just a blank canvas, your pencil or anything and yourself) Doodling (Just putting bunch of lines on paper, little drawings, and see what comes out of it) *Photo reference (Very useful if you want proportions right but can be hard if you don't know how to look at it) Tutorials (probably a lot easier to follow if you start out. Choose something and see if there is a tutorial) Art analysing (Work in Progress art from others can be a great inspiration to try out their specific style to see if you like it. depending on how you approach it, you might need to control your techniques first) *Art Analysing/reference [fine arts] (Something you can do, similar to photos, is using Arts from old times. Like Leonardo Da Vinci!!! using them as reference or inspiration. Or maybe some sculptures?! which) *Photos and traditional art works I see different as photos are exact representations of existing things, like animals, and art is the vision of another person based on the real world (not exact copy of the real world). But a fair representation of the human psychology and what we like. (they survived through time, so plenty of people liked it for some reason right?!)
  24. Some might have noticed ... I'm kind of obsessed with Applejack I even interrupt artwork about Applejack to make some more artwork about Applejack... Doesn't help that she's the only pony I have a toy of... even if it's one from Mcdonald Never enough Apples. Most of my artwork have Applejack. Currently working on one with Applejack But... I actually don't "really" like country so why is AJ my favorite? I even fail to look at AJ herself as a country girl Farmer, sure, but that's something different. But in Dutch she also has a southern accent, Dutch Southern area that is. But those I associate with farmer, not American country folk Anyhow... I like AJ best, even if I can't accurately pinpoint why
  25. Sorry if thread already exists, couldn't find anything that fast. So I was just thinking (and maybe you know what happens when I think to much...), which species do we have that resemble intelligent civilizations as in having a language, a society/community, perhaps also currency or something equivalent.Probably some better way to word that, but I hope you all get what I mean. (Not all ancient civilizations worked with an economy based on a currency like we do now) And perhaps, which unknown species could fit the bill (like showing up in future episodes) Thought I'd type it out a bit So here's comes my big post (which I hope you find interesting at a total of 8k+ characters) On earth it's basically only Humans... but the world of FiM throws in something new there. Adding other species which have their own or shared civilization and contribute to that as any other would. Like if we would have Monkeys walking around doing business, buying groceries and anything we also do for a living. Now they probably don't need to have cities or even little towns, but tribes and such should be more than enough as well. (like here how we still have human tribes right?) So I thought about making a list of "intelligent" species and perhaps also sentient species *looks at all the animals Fluttershy speaks/interacts with* Feel free to post things I missed from the show and to think of other non-confirmed species who might fit the bill. correct mistakes I make or something Intelligent (as described above) Buffalo Cattle (?) Changelings (Diamond) Dogs Donkeys Draconequi Dragons (?) Goats (?) Griffons Minotaur Ponies (Pegasus, Unicorn, Earth, Alicorn) Sea Serpent (?) Zebras With bit of my observation and description about them:BuffaloWe have seen them having tribes and interacting with the ponies of Appleloosa like any other pony would be able to. They already have a known civilization. Similar to those of Native Americans back in the days. They are seen living together with Ponies. Using pies as currency.Cattle (?)Cattle as in cows, They could possibly be integrated into the modern pony society, they can talk and interact, but have not been shown or indicate they have a civilization of theirself. Rather seem to rely on other species, residing in barns and whatnot as domestic semi-intelligent farm animals.ChangelingsThey seem like an entirely separate civilization, ruled by a queen who is capable of communicating with other species like we see them do with Ponies (Chrysalis speaking, but also a changeling responding to Pinkie Pie's request to change in her)Now their community probably looks completely different and more like a hive, but they seem capable enough to integrate with other societies (if they wanted...) (Diamond) DogsMore specifically the Diamond Dogs, since Fiona seem to be more like a normal dog as we know it. The diamond dogs might mean there could be other sub-species who are capable of communicating with other intelligent species and living in a society. But the 3 main Diamond dogs seem to be the only ones able to talk. All the other dogs seem semi-intelligent as they just bark (even though they can understand language) Dogs are probably one of the more complex species around having sub-species ranging from intelligent to just sentient or your average animal (pet) DonkeysFairly similar to ponies, though far less in numbers (in these pony dominated regions that is). Other than being a different specie and looking different they function much like Ponies and mingle with their society like any other pony would be able to.DraconequiThat's Discord... Most unique, and if we had more of him... they probably had their own civilization. But he's alone, though he has ruled the lands before, so he is more than capable of building up a society. and whatnotDragons (?)These are also fairly hard to pinpoint. As they grow up they become mainly solitary creatures. Hoarding bunch of gems. But Spike is capable of a normal live like any other pony. And the teen dragons he meets also seem to support an intelligent community. Although rather fragmented for most of the time.So dragons are capable to live in a Pony like community given the right conditions. Because when Spike got greedy he wasn't really capable of doing so anymore... Goats (?)We haven't seen these a lot, they worked for Iron will. But against what price? are they earning money? or just help them around more like a pet. They do seem to be able to speak with at least Iron Will (Minotaur) because they use headsets. But just how far the Goat civilization has evolved? Not sure. But seeing as they are quite intelligent like any other pony, it's possible they have. But might just be more like Cattle. Edit: TessHM pointed me to the "Best Pet Song", goat just chewing there. and Iron Will's goats just meh goat sounds. So they're probably even less than cattle (for now) and more like Fluttershy's little animals GriffinsMost likely have their own civilization somewhere as well, like Donkeys. Gilda has gone to the Flight Camp with Rainbow Dash. And Gustav in s2e24 MMMystery. Like Donkeys, not high in numbers in these parts of the world, but function like any other.MinotaurNow, Iron Will, the only seen Minotaur, he's a money maker, which should be enough to show he can make a living in modern civilizations. Now whether there are more like him, no idea. Probably at least have tribes, maybe more. But Iron Will could be one to teach himself modern ways and parted with his own species. Like Zecora, but just more integrated. Traveling from place to place, making money. Ponies (Pegasus, Unicorn, Earth, Alicorn)They are basically The main civilization. Ruled by Princesses, what more could I say? they are the main equivalent of humans.Sea Serpent (?)He speaks, he is fabulous, he's fan named Stephen Magnet and he could fairly well design clothes and make money it seems. But he lives out in wilds. So far the only one of his kind we have seen. But if they are like him, who knows, they might contribute to the community. Although their size might cause some issues... so probably will never integrate as much into Pony society like others can.ZebrasWe've seen only one, but we know there are tribes somewhere. Zecora comes from somewhere right? And maybe it's only her home place to be just a tribe. Perhaps they have a bustling city somewhere, but Zecora's tribe wanted to live by their traditional standards. Maybe the reason she lives in the forest and not in Ponyville. But anyhow, most similar to Ponies than any other probably. Other possible species civilizations: Most of the species listed above seem to be hoofed, goats, ponies, donkeys, or mythical creatures, minotaur, griffins. Though of course the majority of mythical creatures are not... and not all hoofed creatures speak. (pigs have hooves right?) But that begs the question, which species could have capabilities of speech, building up a society, economy etc. Like... where would Elephants, rhinos and the like be? We got Buffalo/Bison so th African Cape Buffalo could probably have tribes as well right? Maybe shared with Zebras as they share the environment in our world. Would we have cats similar to the Diamond Dogs, rather than Opal? Also, we have canon chocolate moose. Are they just pets or a species we have not yet seen but has been seen by our Donkey friends. Which brings me to other hoofed forest creatures like Deer, or back to Africa, species like Antelope. What about mythical creatures. We got plenty who speak, but also plenty who don't, Cerberus, Manticore, Hydras. We probably won't see things like Centaur since those have human heads, not animal. Maybe the more Satyr, which are more similar to Minotaur as in capable of having animal heads. But the difference there might be too small for FiM. Perhaps mythical towards Repitlians or birds might work better. Serpents ala Medusa or Naga or something. We could even go into anorganic materials, like the Timberwolfs do, though maybe those are more suited as just wildlife. Also, I find it kind of funny how the only Monkeys we have seen have been garden animals *looks at his name* Probably to close to humans. Semi-Intelligent or Sentient species: Now this list is probably fairly big and with a fine line. I see this group as species who are able to understand other species in communication. Much like pets. Though some seem a lot smarter than our average pet... Like Fluttershy's angel, who is capable of requesting specific things from Fluttershy. Telling time, communicating with her, just not capable of speech. Most animals in FiM seem to understand language, but just can't speak it. I think that's probably the biggest difference when it comes to FiM species. When I have to name something that is even below this, then probably Fish... which I think only served as food (Fluttershy, you so cruel)
