I like that this episode shows Rainbow Dash being more verbal about taking care of one's teammates and not putting other people at risk. On the other hand, the faculty of the Wonderbolts academy did not have their house in order. Seemed like they were oblivious to Lightning Dust walking all over her fellow cadets or were maybe even turning a blind eye. After working for a shot at this for so long RD had to literally resign before they did anything about it. So I like how selfless and consistent with her good morals RD was, but it was nerve wracking that she almost had to give up an a dream that meant so much to her to do the right thing.

If you got those at a comic store, I'd be that darn impressed
I sure did, Slackers at Mid Rivers Mall here in Missouri! I went and looked at three other stores today, two of them theoretically more cozy comics shop and didn't find anything. This was quite the haul. I'm clearly gonna have to get most of the MLP comics I ever read for vendors on the net, but there's no romance in that. Part of me always has to try and see what I can find in-store.

Honestly, this episode actually kind of weirded me out and really threw me off. The premise is well known; someone not prepared for the task has to learn how to babysit, gotcha.
There was something about Pinkie Pie's Piggy Dance that made me feel terribly uneasy. I cannot describe it rationally. There was something just really OFF about it. Even by Pinkie Pie standards.

A strong series opener. It was an interesting decision that Twilight Sparkle was not so interested in friendship. It was not exactly that she was shy, she was more aloof, though only because she took her studies very seriously. But framing the series pitch with a rebalancing of reconciliation between Princess Celestia and Princess Luna was a masterstroke. It was a strong hint of future world building to come and served as a suitably epic problem for the first episode to solve.

I've been keen to get into the comics for both Gen 4 and Gen 5, but part of me always revolts against breaking down and ordering off the net, even if that's what I end up doing perforce.
But I was able to score all three of these and I've already started reading Big Horseshoes To Fill vol.1
I must say, I am impressed by IDW.
I understand that the comics, or at least the degree to which they are canon is sometimes a matter of disagreement, but I'm liking the idea of the Mane 5 visiting the ruins of Canterlot. I do dig the fact that Gen 5 seems to make a point, more than once, of relating to and being respectful of Gen 4. I really did enjoy The New Generation movie. I need to start on MYM, but I have been busy rewatching FIM. I have seen a few episodes of TYT and I think I may be watching the series in the wrong order.
But, the comic is well illustrated and seems to get the characters down. I dig!

I got decent seats for a Bill Shatner appearance at a con in the 1990's. He's a great storyteller in person, very dynamic and high energy, but not over the top. I am curious, is it known exactly how he came to know of MLP FIM? It doesn't surprise me that he'd like it and it certainly does not surprise me that Rainbow Dash is his best pony, but I do wonder how it initially happened - and how that lead to an appearance - but I am most curious about who might have showed it to him and why or if it happened by accident or fate?

We all have our moments of doubt, our mistakes that we make, and to have one moment that tries to turn everything negative is sad. If nothing else, I'll be happy to give a helping hoof up rather than a kick when somepony is feeling down. Negativity attracts but if it can, then so can positivity.
I've recently been reassessing some of own mistakes and been reconsidering what energy I'd really been bringing into situations. Taking FIM back up in earnest, and signing up here are both parts of a long needed 180 I am doing. I too want to spread and attract positivity, so here: good vibes.

Another thing that bugs me is that Fluttershy’s human counterpart in Equestria Girls was the only member to not have a major role in any of the hour long specials. I mean Forgotten Friendship was about Sunset Shimmer (and Trixe), Rollercoaster of Friendship was about Rarity and Applejack, Spring Breakdown was about Sunset Shimmer, Sci-Twi, and Rainbow Dash, and Sunset’s Backstage Pass was about Sunset Shimmer and Pinkie Pie. She didn’t even have her own segment in Holidays Unwrapped.
Interesting. I haven't made it to Equestria Girls, but, clearly...Fluttershy IS one of the Mane 6 and shouldn't be left out like that. Sounds like a similar situation to Pavel Chekov being nixed as a character from the animated series of Star Trek, it just doesn't work.

This will always be one of my all time favorite FIM episodes. While I love the episodic and slice of life format a great deal, I also love world building and a larger mythos to explore, and this was the episode where we set off on that journey, imho.
The scene where Princess Celestia and Princess Luna were reflecting on what was at stake could have been an entire episode unto itself.
Crystals, and far off mysterious cities have a long and venerable history of expanding the horizons of shows like MLP FIM.
An old episode of the Care Bears I remember from my toddler years comes to mind, "Drab City" S1E9b. Unusually dark episode.
I also like that the episode left a lot open and unanswered.
I was puzzled by Princess Celestia's statement that even her knowledge of the empire was not exhaustive.
The episode does not clarify where it came from, how King Sombra took over.
What it does do however, is it puts a new beautiful destination onto the map and leaves it there.
Perfect.

Pinkie Pie's party was kinda David Lynch. I've been there, but I didn't happen to be talking to a bucket of turnips, lol. Mighta been more lively if I had.

I tend to love episodes like 'Lesson Zero' when the main character goes off the rails in a humorous way, this is certainly one of those.
I was kind of taken aback though. I knew Twi was heading into trouble when she stated she'd make a problem since she couldn't find one.
Her presentation of Smarty Pants to the CMC was, unnerving. Not in an unenjoyable way but the first time I saw it, I wouldn't have thought FIM would have gone that over the top.
It's one of the moments that has always stood out in my memory from my first and now second watch through of the series.
The show frequently deals with keeping up a good attitude, but was that really the issue here? Twi is my best pony, and the one I am most like. But I've never looked at her quite the same way as I had before I saw this episode for the first time.
Is Twi entirely stable? This one kind of spooked me.
I had never seen Rainbow Dash recoil from anyone like that ever, at the picnic.

Same reasons, although recently I’ve been thinking why she, Applejack and Rarity don’t get as much attention as Twilight, Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash.
No fib! I've thinking about this myself too! I am half way through season three of my FIM rewatch, and that really did stick out this time. It seemed like it wasn't until the middle of Season 2 that we actually began to get to know Rarity and Fluttershy much. It seemed like we'd seen more of Applejack and Rainbow Dash, but not in a way that allowed me to get to know them better...I guess it can't all happen at once, they have to pace it. But in the first seasons, yeah the emphasis is on Twi and Pinkie, and on Rainbow Dash showing off...she's more complicated than her bravado but we don't even begin to touch on any of that till her stay in the hospital.

@Snoopy Fan I know all about being shy and sensitive, but I've always enjoyed how musical she is, or the setup she has at her cottage and the relationships she has with the animals. And, she lives right next to the Everfree Forest, she's stronger and more attuned than she gets credit for. How bout you?

Bio:
Night Sky is a stallion Pegasus from Cloudsdale. His family has served Princess Luna as Sky Scouts and caretakers of the night skies over Equestria for longer than anyone can remember. During the years of Her exile, his family remained loyal to Princess Celestia and carried on with their duties just as they always had. When Princess Luna returned, Night Sky was close to 40 years of age. He was eligible to rededicate myself to Princess Luna's service, with Princess Celestia's blessings. And that's just exactly what he's done. Normally, he works out of his home town of Cloudsdale, however duty frequently requires him to travel to Canterlot and spend considerable time there as well.
As a Sky Scout, he does a little bit of everything. He sees to it that night time thunderstorms do not get out of hand, he keeps an eye out for Dragons or Changelings, and he watches the borders of Equestria. He also handles special missions for Princess Luna, as needed. Recently Princess Luna has placed Night Sky in charge of training and supervising some of the next generation of ponies who are entering Her service. Her Majesty has pointed out that in no way is he training his replacements, She wishes for Night Sky to remain in Her service for many years to come. So it shall be.
Night Sky loves what he does, but he is almost entirely nocturnal. His striking black coat arises from generations of his ancestors before him sailing the night skies for their entire lives. Though he is naturally thoughtful and intuitive, and relies on his 6th sense instinctively, his five physical senses are incredibly sharp, and he can detect even small movements, sounds or changes from up in the sky.
Night Sky's work requires him to be alone most of the time. Recently, he has been trying to grapple with his newly achieved middle age. he is trying to meet more ponies on his off-days, and in the early evenings before setting out for work. He lives with a task which must be completed each and every night, but he does it all for Equestria and he would not have it any other way.

My Favourite Mane 6 Pony
FluttershyHow did you find MLP Forums?
Google searchHow you became a fan of My Little Pony
When I was a very little guy, my mom bought me my first Pony, this was back in the 1980's, so very much Gen 1. Sadly, she disappeared a long time ago, and I cannot remember which Pony she was, but I remember being very attached to her. Also, my grandmother bought me 2 of the Gen 1 Milton Bradley puzzles, and I remember when those were my pride and joy. Long, long after that, a friend transported me back to Equestria by introducing me to Friendship Is Magic, during the height of the pandemic, and it was a bright ray of joy. I am very much a Brony, though I struggle with my age, and I struggle with the perception that I'm just "late to the party" as it were. But if I can make some new friends or even meet new people, that's all that matters.
Presently, I am rewatching 'Friendship Is Magic' and 'Tell Your Tale'. I am trying to figure out what "gen 5" means to me. I feel that I will always be most at home in "Friendship Is Magic" but I will also always fondly remember "gen 1" since I have those childhood memories. Going forward, I want to meet some other ponies online and then eventually, if they are still happening, attend some conventions and other gatherings, meet in irl. I also plan to be commissioning artwork for my OC in the next couple months. I am really excited to be doing that. I have put off creating an OC for a good while but now is the time and I am sorry I waited. It feels like he understands me better than I do. But I don't have any actual picture of him yet. I am a fine artist, yes, but I am not a cartoonist and anyway, I want someone else to bring Night Sky to live visually. I am totally stoked about that. Please message me if you are also looking to make new acquaintances!

S03:E09 - Spike at your Service
in Season 3 Discussion
Spike's Dragon Code seemingly arrives out of nowhere. I mean, with the great dragon migration, we had seen him become curious about his dragon heritage, but otherwise Spike always seems at ease living among Ponies, so this business card that's a token of morality, which he literally coughs up...deus ex machina, much? Spike is usually cleaning up other Ponies' messes, not making many of his own, so this episode kind of casts him against type in a way that is not refreshing or amusing. RD's misguided attempt to discourage Spike with the construction of a tower of rocks was kind of funny. The timber wolves would have been interesting if we had learned anything about them. Eh.
