  1. This certainly doesn't apply to everyone, but... I started watching MLP because I was in a bad place and needed something to cheer me up. Now that things are better, I'm still interested in the show and fandom, but nowhere near the extent that I was. I doubt I'll end up watching the Season 3 episodes more than once or twice (unlike the 8 or 9 times for my favorite episodes so far), unless they're even more awesome than expected.
  2. This got to me too. Lots of elements of the game made me sad (and happy and frightened and cynical etc.) but I do think I cried at the ending. Super Writer mentioned Okami, which I vaguely remember crying at but I don't remember the scene. Speaking of arthouse games, I definitely cried at Bastion's ending. They did a great job of cramming a huge amount of story into a tiny space, but the wordless ending...damn...
  3. I got invited to a heroes-and-villains themed party. I'm going as Ra's al Ghul from Batman, and my girlfriend is going as Katniss from Hunger Games. (Still need to find a vest...)
  4. An argument that I haven't seen here yet (correct me if I'm wrong) is how useful estimation and error-checking are. There are plenty of times you want to apply math to new situations and you'll want a calculator for accuracy. But when do you know that you punched in the numbers right? Especially getting into higher maths/science, or just longer calculations (like in accounting), error checking is really important. Knowing when an answer just *feels* a bit off, knowing when to look for mistakes...it's really crucial. That only comes from practice without a calculator, and explicit teaching and practice in quick estimation. Should you be expected to answer 926*583 without a calculator? No. Should you be expected to know that it's 5-6,000? Yes. That requires at least some practice without a calculator.
  5. 1. Twilight Sparkle 2. Rainbow Dash 3. Pinkie Pie 4. Applejack 5. Rarity 6. Fluttershy Sorry Flutters Rarity was at the bottom of that last until Sisterhooves Social. Hurricane Fluttershy made that a hard choice again though...
  6. Interesting point, I never thought of it that way. How would you cut back on the character arc though? There was one main lesson to be learned, and that's about it... One of my favorite S1 episodes. It contained so many cues for AJ's mental state: the wobbly vision after missing RD's catapult, tinnitus after hitting her head, distorted hearing from sleep dep. They were really assuming a lot from the target audience, which is what made the show great (and I'm sure started attracting bronies).
  7. Hmm, could work. I was also thinking that links could be added to just about any game. Something like "Wanna hear Rainbow Dash talk about how she controls the weather?" that's not necessary to finish the game. Also, a bit disappointed that this moved into merch. I was hoping the thread could also cover 'ponies as scientists' and 'ponies as role models' as well as 'ponies as merchandise'
  8. The best thing would be a game that incorporates these elements rather than being a straight-up edutainment game. But as I phrased it, it would probably turn out as edutainment. Alternately, can you think of a way to include these aspects into an otherwise non-science pony game?
  9. I had this idea a while ago and wanted to get some community reaction to it. That's part of the reason I joined this forum actually. So here goes... Older bronies tend to create games and music for older bronies, but what about giving back to the target audience? One of my overall goals is encouraging women into science (well, getting more people into science in general), and a lot of that requires seeing good role models at an early age. What are the science qualities of various ponies? Do you think a science-themed pony game aimed at the show's target audience (or a bit older even) would fly? Here are my thoughts on how the mane 6 fit into the various sciences. Please supply more ideas, I certainly don't know about every science out there! Twilight: Physics and astronomy. I mean, she has at least two telescopes in that library. She could also serve as an overall narrator, as she's probably interested in every science out there. Rarity: So, first I thought of things that would fit into fashion and design: Architecture and materials science. There are already a ton of bridge-building type games out there, so that seems to be successful. (The latter wouldn't fit in very well into a kids game, I don't think.) However, I head-desked when my girlfriend mentioned the most obvious science for Rarity: Geology. Seriously, how did I not think of that? Fluttershy: Ecology and veterinary science. She would have a lot of overlap with Applejack on some things, but I think she'd have a good handle on population interdependence and the needs of various species. Rainbow Dash: Aerodynamics and meteorology. Just about every kid is fascinated by the fact that anything can fly, and I remember being really interested in learning about weather (clouds particularly). Applejack: Botany (plant biology) and veterinary science. She's gotta know something about fertilizers, nutrients, irrigation, soil, growth patterns, etc. to run a farm. Pinkie Pie: Chemistry. Baking and chemistry have a lot in common. I also think that having both general chemistry and food chemistry in particular could be cool. Which of these categories would you change? Add to? Are there non-mane 6 ponies that should be included?
  10. I support this perspective. The characters in the show are primarily shown as adults (CMC aside) with their own lives and jobs. Even when family members of the mane 6 have been shown, it's either through flashbacks or short visits. Parents just haven't been that important. (Of course, that doesn't explain Scootaloo at all.)
  11. My Favourite Mane 6 Pony: Twilight Sparkle How did you find MLP Forums?: Honestly? Google. How you became a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: I've been a fan of cartoons in general, and I saw how many people were into MLP, so I gave it a shot. I'm a science grad student in the US, a fan of various cartoons (though unfortunately I no longer have cable TV), off-and-on gamer, musician, and jogger. If any of those pique your interest, let me know!
