Growing up in Canterlot, Gloomy Glum was often overlooked by her parents who often gave more attention to her two older siblings. She was also bullied at school, called was often called an outcast, lone wolf, or weirdo. She didn't want to talk about her bullying and her home situations because she didn't think it would change anything. She had a fascination in art but never made it a full career, her parents didn't care for her getting her cutie mark, her cutie mark was called "dull" and "upsetting to look at". She saw how her two other siblings would have such great achievements in life and her parents would often get them gifts. One her nineteenth birthday, Gloomy Glum ran away from home after being called a "worthless" and "some pony who would never achieve anything in life" at her birthday. She was in the park when she was approached by Solar Flare, her only friend that went to another school. Solar Flare told her that
"Life is hard and you have to embrace it. But what if I told you that me and you can watch Equestria fall into disorder by toppling one of its main defenses. We can achieve great things together, if you join me. It's time to show Equastria that friendship isn't magic, but rather, power" Gloomy Glum soon joined Solar Flare's group and has become the Element of Sorrow, the opposite of Laughter.
Gloomy Glum was a lonely, sad, and timid filly. She often felt worthless and jealous of her two siblings attention by her parents. She learned that there is no such thing as happiness, life is sad, and to just embrace it. She would often sketch random drawings but she didn't sketch after she got her cutie mark. Gloomy Glum was a little happy when she got her cutie mark, but this happiness was short-lived when her parents and two siblings criticized her cutie mark. She ran away on her nineteenth birthday because she couldn't take to the neglect and she would think that they wouldn't miss her. When she reunited with Solar Flare and told her to join his group, she was reluctant but decided to join anyways. Gloomy Glum is still sad and timid, but doesn't like getting into confrontations with the Mane 6, often flying away. In later years, she would start sketching again
