When Balsam is in a sociable mood, his humor and charm shine through. He can seem a bit distant at first, however once he warms up to someone new, often talking their ears off. When he is not feeling sociable, he can seem distant, lost in his innermost thoughts. Balsam has been known to zone out from time to time, being distracted by the beauty of the Everfree Forest, or the occasional shiny item. He is most comfortable around his friends and family. He can be socially awkward around doe his own age and can occasionally put his cloven hoof in his mouth. The buck also enjoys his alone time. Occasionally he can be found under an evergreen, daydreaming.
Balsam's largest fault is his fear of conflict, often going out of the way to avoid it to an unhealthy level. He has a deep fear of being disliked and will sometimes become 'clingy' to those that he feels dislike him in an attempt to sway their opinion, often for it to blow up in his face or to be taken advantage of. Gullible would at times seem an understatement.

Balsam was born in Thicket deep within the Everfree forest, the first of two fawns. He was raised by his loving parents. Growing up, he kept mainly to himself and a very few close friends. His introversion, combined with his antlers growing one point short on his left side, he quickly became the target of his peers. Balsam would take the jokes in stride as he grew, not letting them get under his fur. Many nights, he would sneak out of his family's dwelling in Thicket and attempt to unwind. Often he would be found the next morning, fast asleep under one of the many fir trees near their home.
Growing older, the young buck found that his troubles had yet to cease. Balsam's eyesight had been getting fuzzy for a few months and the deer was having trouble distinguishing even the most simple of flowers or plants in the forest at distance. Without a solution to his blurry vision within Thicket, Balsam would have to find a fix on his own. Against the will of his family, the young buck would set out into the forest on his own, unable to see 15 hoof-lengths beyond his nose.
Unbeknownst to Balsam, instead of heading deeper into the forest, he was getting closer to a its border with Equestria. One morning while picking wild berries for a meal, something would catch his attention. Discarded in the forest where an old pair of wireframe glasses. By sheer luck, they where his prescription. Once he had put them on, Balsam would gasp in aw at the pony city that lay just beyond the edge of the Everfree Forest. It was then that he realized that his 'new' glasses must have come from there. The young buck wanted to venture into the city, however the stories he had heard as a fawn where enough to deter him.
He would return to Thicket not telling anydeer about his adventure, except his younger sister. Balsam would make a home under a large grove of firs near Thicket. The deer would specialize in potions pertaining to Evergreens.
The recent run in with ponies has peeked his interest in their culture and technology.
The name Balsam is derived from the Balsam Fir, a type of evergreen found in the north eastern U.S. and Canada.
