Backstory: What's a unicorn doing with an earth pony name? Bluebell is originally from Apple Loosa, and was raised by earth pony parents who didn't completely understand how to raise a unicorn. At first, they attempted to remove her horn, but Bluebell's strong and unwieldy magic made that impossible. Determined to make her as much like the other children in town as they could, they forbade her from using any magic at all while she was growing up. Though well meaning, this made matters worse; Bluebell's magic would inevitably express itself in uncontrolled -and sometimes humiliating and embarrassing - ways when her emotions ran high.

Elementary school was a terrible ordeal for her. A few classmates would make fun of her horn as well as her chronic stuttering when she spoke, and would try to provoke uncontrolled flashes of magic to get her into trouble. In a moment of absolute anger and despair, she unleashed a massive bolt of energy from her horn at her tormentors, blowing a head-sized hole through the chalk board and clean through the wall of the schoolhouse.

At a loss for what else to do, Bluebell's parents sent her away to a school for unicorns in Canterlot. She didn't fare much better there; her peers often berated her for sounding and acting like "a dumb earth pony". One especially angry and frustrated teacher said to her, "I promise you, I will mark you a failure!" Bluebell left school that day and never returned.

She survived and subsisted in an abandoned cottage on the outskirts of Canterlot well into her adulthood, making her living selling old, discarded books that she couldn't read for being functionally illiterate, in a cart that she could barely pull through the streets.

By chance, she met one of Princess Celestia's students, who offered to teach her to read. Bluebell happily jumped at the opportunity, and after overcoming some considerable obstacles, she was taught by the princess herself. At present, she travels far and wide to discover and record the various cultures and histories of places in and around Equestria.
