These ponies make it immensely difficult to think clearly

The ground : He claims it feels weird, hed rather fly whenever he can, even if not particularly necessary

Large cities : these are too loud and busy; an aweful contrast to the quiet, serene places he prefers

Backstory:
Born of his two unicorn parents, the only other unicorn in his family had long since passed. When he was a foal, he would see his parents doing things with their horns that both amazed and intrigued him. Mr and Mrs Alatum would always chuckle softly as they watched Flame desperately trying to levitate his toys. Skip ahead, and when Flame was just a young colt, he asked his dad if he could teach him unicorn magik. He wanted to tell him the truth. That there was no way it could be done. but as he looked into his son's pleading eyes, he couldnt bring himself to tell him. He told him he would start first thing in the morning, and sentt him off to bed.

That night, Liadon (his father) snuck out as soon as he could no longer hear his son's excited laughter. He went to the Canterlot Library just a few blocks away, and asked the mare at the counter for books on the history of Pegasus magik. After leading him to a shelf, she handed him a tome titled "Ancient Ideas and Thoughts on the subject of Anomalies of Magik in Pegasi". He opened it and the first page it landed on was a well known myth called the Sonic Rainboom. The author even included an interview with a young filly named Rainbow Dash who claims to have performed it the day just before to be seen for virtual miles. It was a wonder he didnt see it. He remembered hearing rumors but doubted them. But not wanting to upset his little colt, he saw this as a shimmer of hope for his son. He eagerly began flipping through the book's many worn pages. Suddenly he found something that called to him. A legend supposedly claimed that a common anomoly fitting Flame's description was that a pegasus such as he could have a limited control and manifestation of arcane flames during flight. The author also supported strong evidence that this explained supposed myths of fire storms, and flaming tornadoes that Liadon was all too familiar with. He read on, and by the time the moon rose, emblazoned with the Nightmare's insignia, he knew what to do.

The next morning, Flame opened his eyes to the light of Celestia's sun rising. Today was the day. He practically burst out of his bed and ran to the door to awake his father, only to see him open the door that very moment.

"Ready to get started, champ?" Liadon queeried. To which Flame eagerly nodded.

"Okay, then, come with me." Flame excitedly followed.

They exited the house and walked to the Canterlot border. Flame was too excited to notice, however. They soon arrived in the dense woodland area just outside of Canterlot. He led Flame a large tree in a clearing.

"Look up in the tree, Flame." he told his son. Fire did as requested and craned his neck upwards to see a beautiful bird that seemed to be made up of flames. "What do you think, son?"

"Umm..." Flame had never been good at expressing thought. They were too complex to voice. "She's beautiful..." he finally said.

Liadon chuckled at this. "Yes he is" He immediately noticed Flame's confused look. "Flame, you see, the birds are quite different than us ponies. The males are the beautiful ones. the females are less so." he explained. "Oh, here comes the mother!"

Flame turned his head, and saw the female bird. He noticed her flame was dimmer, and she hadnt the male's fiery crest nor his luminescent tail feathers. "What are they?" he finally asked.

"They are Phoenix, Flame" he answered matter-of-factly. "They are wise and beautiful spirits of flame, and they are immortal." Flame grew wide eyed at the thought, but what was to come next wouldve made his eyes pop out of their sockets. "You hold some of their power".

"WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA?!" mind. officially. blown.

Liadon explained to the young pegasus what he had found. All the while Flame worried about what hed have to live up to. He wasnt supposed to be so weak. He decided from that point on, hed never again show weakness. "You okay?" Flame snapped back to reality.

"Uh... yeah. Im fine..." Liadon simply shrugged it off. "I like how quiet it is out here. Its beautiful... so how do I start learning my abilities?

Liadon simply summonec a candle and with a blue flash from his horn, lit it. "Stare into the flame" he explained "imagine yourself drawing from it through your wings. If anything happens, your abilities will be confirmed. keep a blank mind."

Flame did so, and just as he was beginning to doubt the legends, he felt hot. he felt his wings move towards the flame, and he rose up into the sky, just a little. when he opened his eyes he saw his wings were on fire, and his mane and tail flickered like flames. the most astounding thing though, was the ring of flames somewhat orbiting him. He stared into his father's astonished gaze, and himelf was amazed. But then he lost focus, and felt pressure before a burst of white light burst forth. The phoenix flew away, started, as Flames father aproached his son, who now lay upon the floor.

"SON!!!! Are you okay?" he asked worried.

"Yeah, Dad, Im fine..." he stood up with little difficulty.

Just then, Liadon spotted something upon Flame's flank. "Son! Look at your Cutie-Mark!"

"WHAT! I HAVE IT?!" He turned his head to see the winged flame-spiral upon his previously blank flank. So its my destiny then he thought. So its settled... show no weakness. "Nothings more important now..." he said under his breath.

From that day, Flame never did anything else except hone his abilities, both in flight and in magik. One day, when he was a sixteen year old, beautiful stallion, he realized he couldnt get any stronger. He tried to go back to his old life, the one he abandoned, but couldnt ease into it very well. He needed to remember who he was, so the very next morning, he told his parents he would be leaving on a journey of self discovery, and he wouldnt be back until he found himself, and maybe even meet some new friends on the way.
