Backstory: In progress

Born to a family of unicorns, his father named Harvest Moon, and his mother Shining Star, the silvery pony named Moon Shine's life started out rather ordinarily. Born in Canterlot, and expected to be a natural at magic, coming from two strong magical bloodlines, Moon Shine was enrolled in a prestigious magic school as soon as he was old enough. However, even though he tried his best to do well and please his parents, in his first year, the only spells he could manage were levitation and simple light producing spells.
Refusing to give up on learning magic, Moon Shine told his parents that he wanted to stay in the magic school for one more year, and although he had to retake Magic Kindergarden and be able to use the spells he learned to go to first grade, he tried his best to learn magic. Unknown to his parents, Moon Shine would read magic books and try to cast the simplest spells every night. Instead of sleeping, he would rely on sunlight to give him the energy to stay awake, a trick he later found out was actually a trait of his own unique magical talents.
Studying every hour of the day gave Moon Shine the boost he needed to be able to pass Kindergarden and graduate to slightly higher level magic - though locking himself in his room all day also impacted his social skills a small amount - he still wasn't very good with magic in practice, but what he lacked in skill he easily made up in theory.
Although he was allowed by the school to go into the next grade, at age 7, Moon Shine decided that his meager skills weren't worth training, and he got his parents to un-enroll him from the school.
While studying in a non-magic school, Moon Shine would help his father with their field outside of Canterlot that they would grow food in. Usually the field would be left to earth ponies that were hired to take care of it, but when applied consistently, Harvest Moon's nature magic would increase the reaping, so he visited the field often, and there was always room for help at harvest time.

At age 10, what may have been the biggest event in Moon Shine's life happened; while he was walking to his dad's field, he was playing a frog, following it's hops and trying to only set a hoof down where the frog had been. The frog hopped onto a log that was bridging a quickly moving river, and Moon Shine, without thinking, started to follow the frog, still hopping on one foot. When he was about five hops in, at the center of the log, he lost his balance, and fell into the river. The river had steep edges of the bed, and was a few meters down from ground level.
Before he was swept too far down the stream, Moon Shine spotted a cave in the wall of the river, furiously paddling toward the cave, he just barely reached it before it was too late. Moon Shine grabbed the bottom of the cave entrance and pulled himself up into the cave. It was dark and damp, but it was still better than being swept along a river to who knows where...
Looking around, he could just barely see the outline of the cave walls, going forward and slowly tilting downward. It would have been better if the cave had tilted up right away, but it having to come back up somewhere was Moon Shine's only thought.
Moon Shine walked slowly down the passageway, scared of what could be around him in the darkness, hearing the sounds of rodents' claws scraping the ground.. Starting to cry, Moon Shine started calling out to his parents, or anyone else that was nearby, but no one seemed to hear, and he was still alone.. Except for the fact that he wasn't quite alone, the rats and spiders were plentiful, even though he couldn't see them.. In fact, he wouldn't have realized that there were spiders at all.. Until one of them landed on his back. Screaming at the new passenger, Moon Shine started to run around frantically trying to get it off of him, due to his franticness, Moon Shine didn't even notice that one of his hoofs hit air until he started falling.
He was at the bottom of a pit in a pitch-black tunnel, feeling around, he could tell that there was dirt on all four sides of him. Trying to find a way out, Moon Shine tried to recall the light spells that he learned in Kindergarden, but when he tried them, they didn't seem to work. Trying harder and harder, making sure to put as much energy into each spell as possible, but nothing seemed to be working, until he put just the slightest bit more magic into the spell, and everything lit up, seemingly all white due to the brightness. The white lasted for a few seconds, before slowly transitioning into color, but the amount of light he was producing took a toll on Moon Shine, and it wasn't long before he fainted.
After he woke up in a hospital bed, Moon Shine heard his dad's account of what happened; after Moon Shine hadn't turned up when he was supposed to, his dad started to search for him, he eventually turned up at the river, near the cave, and after seeing a burst of light coming out of the cave, he grabbed a lantern and investigated the cause, finding Moon Shine unconscious in a small pit.

    Does he drink often?

It was originally supposed to represent something weird with his vision that I ended up abandoning, I just never got around to changing his name since I liked the pun
