Appearance: Rivet is a amber earth pony with a reddish-brown mane and tail. His looks are a little scruffy, as he pays little attention to trying to look good (beyond wearing a fedora whenever he's out of his workshop, for some reason).

He is almost always wearing a pair of goggles around his neck. He's a little skinny, and not very athletic at all, and stands at about 2 feet and 11 inches-- quite average for a pony.
Cutie Mark: His cutie mark is a gear, inscribed with Old Equestrian runes. His talent has always been in combining magic with technology, and almost all of his inventions are an unusual combination of steam technology and magic.
Personality: Rivet is a cheery individual, practically swimming in quirks and idiosyncrasies. He treats science and alchemy like a children's entertainer might treat, say, making balloon animals, and is very eager to demonstrate things for the sake of demonstrating them.

He shares some traits with his second cousin, Pinkie Pie, in that they both have an unusual way of being down-to-earth and always have an unconventional answer to life's problems.

Rivet spends most of his time helping random strangers, as well with his customers and anypony who passes through the door into his workshop; he is quite generous, so much that he will often give TOO much.

Rivet has picked up some magical knowledge; although he cannot cast spells without the aid of the proper devices, he is quite skilled in transmutation and other non-combat magics.

He doesn't seem to have a goal or overarching agenda; he simply tackles things as they come, eagerly taking opportunities to learn new pieces of information and solve problems, but he doesn't go out of his way to find these opportunities.
Backstory: Rivet lived a calm, idyllic life in Canterlot, having been identified for his intelligence at a young age. He went on to learn magical science, despite the fact that he was not a unicorn. He ended up getting his cutie mark rather late in life, and was the butt of many jokes (pun not intended) throughout his childhood.

As he went to college and learned his trade, Rivet discovered a magical crystal after an alchemical accident. He named the resulting substance Ember. Rivet's Ember was able to store and conduct magical energies, much like a unicorn's horn. It was this gem which he based many of his inventions off of, eventually creating a set of gloves which could allow Earth Ponies and Pegasi to manipulate objects with dexterity, as if they were minotaurs. He later made modifications to his personal pair, allowing him to cast magical spells.
