Nimbus
By Joat
Age: 1 (Immortal)
Gender: Male
Species: Non-Pony
Appearance: A winged rat, about 2’ tall, which can stand either bipedal or quadrupedal. He has white fur with a rainbow shimmer. His eyes are also rainbow-hued. his wings are semi-transparent, looking more like rainbow glass than anything organic (though they are not nearly so rigid as glass). His wings sparkle with magical energy while in flight.
Personality: His eyes oft dart around looking for something to jump out of some shadowy place to try to kill him. He is constantly on edge, ready to defend himself at a moment’s notice. He is actually fairly nice, despite his hardship and the fact that he never really had anyone to rely on except himself before. However, when something does attack, he fights with a feral intensity.
Backstory: Nimbus was not traditionally born. He was hatched from a mystic egg. When he hatched, he found himself in an abyss with worn ruins of buildings floating around him in midair. Flying in the abyss were evil spirits without faces, seeking to destroy the living. Since he was living, Nimbus naturally found himself attacked quite a bit. At the time, his only defense was Glitter Fire. It worked quite well, actually, but he still sustained injuries. Some of the walls of the ruins were not solid, so even when he thought he was safe, he was incorrect, for a spirit could be flyinig at him from behind at any moment. Fortunately, he did not need to sleep, but even so, he was quite distressed that he could not so much as rest.

In time, Nimbus found a portal leading out of the abyss. However, he did not find the respite he was hoping for. Instead, what greeted him was an unforgivingly cold environment infested by abominations made of snow and ice. There were a few shelters from the cold, fortunately, but he still did not like this place any better than the abyss.

In time, he encountered another living being. Unfortunately, like everything else, it was out to kill him. However, it was also much more powerful than anything he had faced before. It was too fast to flee from. However, though it wounded him greatly, Nimbus did triumph in the conflict.

This unleashed an unknown power within him. He found himself involuntarily swallowing the soul of the fallen being. He felt terrible pain during the process. When the soul was swallowed, he saw a small portion of the being’s memories. After that, he gained a portion of the fallen being’s power.

Shortly after killing the hostile being, Nimbus found another portal taking him to another, no less dangerous place. The process would repeat itself, with Nimbus fighting a living being, gaining its soul and a portion of its memory, and finding another portal. Through the memories, Nimbus learned of his creation and how this terrible world came to be.

--------------------------------------------------

Nimbus was created by a cat named Mr. Fluffykins. Well, that was his real name. The name he went by, however, was Narith. Narith was very, very evil. Twisted by the promise of power that demonic magic provided, he wanted nothing less than the annihilation of all life. That is what he got. Well, mostly. There were a few exceptions that were left after the Narith’s great cataclysm that wiped otherwise all life on the planet as well as Narith himself.

One exception was that from the cataclysm was born Nimbus.

The other exception was a few “toys” that Narith left for Nimbus to kill. Those who opposed Narith most vigorously were transformed into monsters with no free will, only the directive to kill any living being. The souls trapped inside those now-uncontrollable bodies were fully aware of what they had become and what they were doing. Narith intended for Nimbus to gain a taste for murder through killing them and gain great power through swallowing their souls.

--------------------------------------------------

However, Narith only got half of that. Nimbus gained more power, certainly, but seeing the memories of the torment through the eyes of the souls he absorbed gave him not bloodlust, but compassion. He felt a desire to undo the harm done and to make it so that the cataclysm never happened.

Eventually, Nimbus came across the throne of Narith, which would allow him to do exactly that. The throne was enchanted to allow Nimbus to travel back in time to before the great cataclysm so that he would be able to witness the torment.

Instead, Nimbus went back in time to oppose Narith, knowing that in doing so he would prevent the event that created him, thus erasing himself from the timestream. He succeeded in destroying Narith.

However, in doing so, he nearly did far worse that erase himself from time. In creating a grandfather paradox, he nearly destroyed causality itself. However, the timestream did ultimately right itself by treating Nimbus as an extradimensional traveler rather than a time traveler and sending him away.

Except for Narith himself, all of the souls Nimbus absorbed were removed from him, since due to his actions, those people had retroactively not died by his hands, instead being able to go on to live their lives in peace.
