Personality: often mysterious and a little rough around the edges, Phoenix can be a hard pony to get to know. not only does she normally push away anyone who tries to get close to her, but she's also very reclusive. this makes even finding her a difficult task, as she spends most of her time isolated out in the woods, surfacing once in a blue moon for supplies. that isn't to say it's impossible, however. <br /><br />the reason for her reclusive and rough cynical attitude is because of what she had to go through at a young age. the fall of her tribe set her on a path that made her believe she needed to be that way in order to survive. she never knows when a pony wants to get close to her only to attack. but even if she appears to not be on guard, she's always analyzing the ponies around her for possible threats. <br /><br />of course, the oddity of how she became a mare in the first place has caused her to become quite shy as well, but don't mistake her shyness for fear. she also has never even thought about a romantic relationship because of her predicament. to get into one would just be too awkward. even if she has come to terms with her body, she just cannot see her new self in a romantic light, simply because she feels a disconect with her body, and who she is on the inside. of course, there's no telling what could happen if romantic opportunities presented themselves. will she hold steady, or will her new body and hormones convince her otherwise?

Backstory: Mato was born a colt, in a tribe of ponies who revered the abilities of the Phoenix. they spent their entire lives, creating many rituals and ceremonies to honor the mythical bird. the existence of this tribe is not widely known, and the tribe itself was very reclusive. most noteworthy to the tribe, was the phoenix's ability to reanimate itself from its own ashes. this led to necromancy being a sought after talent within the tribe. however, after generations and generations of work, finally a breakthrough was made. however, it ended in disaster. an outbreak of the undead within the village. this led to Mato, at a young age making the grown up decision to burn down the entire village to keep the outbreak from spreading elsewhere. unfortunately, Mato was the only one who survived. he adopted the name "Phoenix" to commemorate his villiage, and what his people admired. <br /><br />now that he was made homeless, he was forced to wander the land. after what he had done, he couldn't bring himself to talk to anypony for years. he was a wandering nomad, and avoided populated areas. he survived in the woods, using his abbilities. he had ditched necromancy, and instead became proficient in regeneration. if he could not reverse death, he would much rather prevent it alltogether. one day, in the woods he came across a small shack. being extremely hungry, he went to it seeking food. it appeared to be abandoned, but he was wrong. a sorceress had made her home there, and she had no intention on allowing ponies to trespass. knowing no damaging spells, the sorceress instead cast a tirade of random spells in attempt to debilitate Phoenix. one of them did end up hitting him, and that is how HE came to be a SHE. obviously shocked and wierded out by the whole situation, this caused him (now her) to be more reclusive than ever. he had to learn to deal with his new body, and everything that it came with. now, she has come to terms with her new identity, but she still tries to avoid pony interactions as a whole. ESPECIALLY romantic ones. she has trouble seeing herself as beautiful, and she could not understand anypony else seeing her as such. it just didn't feel right to her. however, a new body came with new hormones, and eventually she might be forced to succumb to them, beyond her best wishes. of course, getting close to her is not something that comes easy, so time has yet to tell. <br /><br />tl; dr.<br /><br />Phoenix was born in a tribe of unicorns that worshiped the abilities and powers of the phoenix. for generations, they had studied the majestic creatures and tried to mimic them in terms of magical powers. unfortunately, something happened to them and Phoenix was the only one remaining of the tribe. unknown to most ponies, Phoenix is not actually her birth name, but an alias she adopted to represent her tribe. another thing unknown to most ponies at first glance, is that Phoenix was not born a filly. early on in her nomadic life, after she lost her tribe, she had a mishap with a woodland sorceress and was cursed with a gender swap spell. because of this, she normally avoids romantic relationships, but that could change in time. she would only really tell ponies that get close enough to her, which is a rare case due to her personality and lifestyle.
