Ever been asked (or thought of) what you would realistically do if you had trillions? If you had so much money you could do whatever you want? If I had money my first investment would be the revival of one of my favorite series in motorsports... the A1GP.

 

The A1 Grand Prix was dubbed "The World Cup of Motorsports" because of its concept. In motorsports, teams and drivers are racing for their manufacturer or the team itself (Hendrick Motorsports, Scuderia Ferrari) In A1GP teams and drivers were competing for their country like in the world cup. Every team had the exact same car (decked out in the national colors of their respective team) so that the drivers and pit crews distinguished themselves on the track with different tactics. The concept to me was brilliant and races took place all over the world during the Formula 1 offseason. The series folded due to poor management and money issues. Ferrari got involved and assisted the series by providing engines and assisting with the chassis. There were several attempts to revive the series but all have proven unsuccessful. There are racetracks all across the world going bust because they cant pay the bills. If I were reviving the series I would have secured agreements with racetracks all over the world and created a more diverse schedule. Most of the races took place in Europe (which makes sense a lot of race teams are based in the UK and Germany). The financial model was set up as cheaply as possible so that the series would appeal even to markets that didn't have as much interest in motorsports. All of the World Cup excitement reminds me of this race series that I wish was still around.

 

Am I the only one who remembers this awesome series?

 

The series at its height had about 30 teams.

I remember that series, they were supposed to race at Surfer's Paradise back in 2009 but they never arrived.
