Alonzo Cushing will be awarded the Medal of Honor 151 years after his heroic death at the battle of Gettysburg. 22 years old at the time, he commanded a six-gun artillery battery stationed at The Angle. During Pickett's charge, he was wounded twice, the second wound ripping open his abdomen. Holding his intestines in place with his hand, he refused to leave the battle. Commanding until the very end, he was finally killed by a bullet, fired by one of the Confederate soldiers "lucky" enough to survive long enough to get into shooting range. Cushing is one of many forgotten Civil War heroes, but I am thrilled to see he will finally be properly honored for his remarkable service to the Union. Crazy thing about all of this is I was just thinking about this earlier today and much to my surprise I found out that this had been announced no more than an hour later Edited August 27, 2014 by LZRD WZRD 2 Check out my channel for awesome video reviews and analysis! https://www.youtube.com/c/LZRDWZRD
