Schwarzwald's Speech and the Discussion of Fear

I was looking at qoutations and ran across this one, I've never actually seen the show myself but I found it very interesting:

 

"Even without the events of 40 years ago, I think man would still be a creature that fears

the dark. He doesn't face that fear, he averts his eyes from it and acts as if he doesn't

have any memories of his past. But, 40 years is both a short time and yet, a long time. Man's

fear has withered. And even time itself tries to wither the desire to know the truth. Is it a

crime to try and learn the truth? Is it a sin to search for those things which you fear. My purpose

in this world is knowledge, and the dissemination of it. And it is I who is to restore the fruits

of my labor to the entire world. Fear... It is something vital to us puny creatures. The instant

man stop fearing is the instant the species reaches a dead end, only to sink to pitable lows, only

to sit and wait apathetically for extinction. Humans who lose the ability to think become creatures

whose existence has no value. Wake up! Don't be afraid of knowledge! Think, you humans who are split into two worlds, unless you want the gulf between humans to expand into oblivion, you must think!

So, what are your opinions on the need for fear in man's existence? Do we need it to survive, could it ever even dissapear? Anything you want to bring up in discussion please feel free to do so, as long as it stays on topic and respectful. I am interested to hear your opinions, I have been mulling over this myself for a while.

Well, I think the physical aspect of fear is a defense mechanism. When you are afraid, you run. You survive. If we had no fear, we would lose our sense of right or wrong seeing as the fear of hurting people (emotionally or physically) wouldn't be an issue.

 

Think of it this way: fear is so much more than a sudden jolt of adrenaline or the nagging voice in the back of your head that reminds you of your mortality. It is the same sensation that leads you to seek medical attention when you think something is wrong with your body and it is the same feeling that incites critical thinking in critical situations such as debating war. At the same time, when you are the leader of a large organization, your biggest fear is going bankrupt and losing everything, so you're not going to be prone to rash thinking and random moves.

 

You have to take the good with the bad, it's how the world stays in balance. If you respect fear then you respect the courage it takes to face it. Without fear, we wouldn't even have courage.

 

Not everyone was meant to be the hero. Sometimes, people play better roles on the side lines.

 

It's kind of like Newton's Law of Motion! For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction!

Without fear, there is only complacency and security and when it's just that, man is doomed to wither and become fat and weak.

 

Fear drives people to avoid a particular outcome, although it's unknown whether they'll succeed or fail at avoiding it, that drive alone is crucial to keeping people on their toes and to not get lax.

 

In other words, survival of the fittest!! Raaaaaargh!!

Fear is something that will always exist, even to the end of the universe and yes we need fear as the above posters pointed out.
