FIRST A WARNING: I know this can be sensitive to some so I'm gonna try to make it as friendly as possible. It's war, I know, nothing is gentle but I'm gonna try to be as light with what I say.

Now, It's been such a long time since I've been on here... So I feel like coming back sharing a story my brother (who is in the USAF) was told by a commander that was on a mission. And I thought in some way this might be a good topic to go ahead and share old or new war stories. I felt like sharing this one because something was watching this group. And thank those who have to go through the hard ships of war. Were rooting for you people back here.

It's been a long time since I heard it. It's a 3-4 year old story. I couldn't pass this up and came into mind a few days ago. But I've been reluctant on telling it. But it's such an amazing thing I felt like I had to share it.

A squad was sent from a base somewhere between Iraq or Afghanistan. It's very late at night and they've been riding in HMMWV (Or military grade humvee's) most of the way and come across a massive valley. They didn't like how they had to pass through it so they got out of their cars and walked along the side of them while keeping an eye for enemies. Approaching towards the middle of the valley, they of course, get ambushed from both sides of the valley. In a panic, as guns were going off in every direction, they open their doors for cover, and two of the units got in front of the HMMWV Don't remember if it was the last h vehicle or the first either way just note that they're in front of the vehicle) and ducked down on it for cover. The squad returned fire at the flashes they see when the enemies guns went off.

After the commander fired off a few shots, he realized him and his squad are going to be screwed if they don't get out of that turkey shoot. He tells most of his units to fall back, they rush to a boulder and away from the mess. Notice how I say "most" of his units. Remember the two other soldiers that I said that hunkered for cover? There still there. And they're being suppressed. One enemy had the idea of getting an RPGx7 and firing it at them. Luck would have it that the missile waves off and hits behind the HMMWV. The force and shrapnel of the blast hit the extra fuel cans in the back and exploded. That force sent the HMMWV to tilt onto its bumper, and keep going until it was flipped onto its back. The two units? They're still there in front of the vehicle. From the group that retreated, it looked like they were going to be crushed by a 5,900lb flaming ball of fire onto the soldiers.

But not today.

The vehicle tilts onto the bumper, the bumper makes the vehicle bounce up, and over the two soldiers. That was a clear sign for the to "Run". They did, and they made it back to the group with out getting shot by the enemy. Once with the main group, they sit behind the rock as the commander thinks. He says (in some sort of way) "We're going to empty our mags on them... Ready?" They all line up on hug the bolder, ready to poke out on fire. Once the commander yelled out "Now!" They all pop up, and start to fire until the mags are dry. Now if I remember correctly. there was about 8 people. With 8 assault rifles going off at the same time, and them not having hearing protection. That was a loud line of fire. Once the mags were empty. They sit back down on the rock. No one has taken a hit yet. They can hear them coming as it sounds like they're are more of them coming.

Losing hope after the battle had been going on for a time, the commander looks at his squad and says "It's been an honor being with you soldiers..." He says more but I can't remember entirely what he says and I don't want to quote something he didn't say.  One solider wrapped his arm around his friend, then his friend wrapped his arm around his friend, and so on until they made a circle and waited for their time to come.

But the universe has other plans for them.

When they made the circle, and for what probably felt like an eternity, they hear a loud BVVVVRRRRRRRRRT BVVRRRT BVVVRRRRT, that went into the valley, passing over their heads and two seconds later, an A-10 warthog flies by with the pilot over their radio saying "I got you." (I'll always remember that part clearly) coming out of the circle they made, they look out and can't see much, but from what they can tell, their contact has been eradicated.

They were able to go on without another incident.

When they were at base, they were asking around for who the pilot was that saved them. The response was "We didn't have anyone out that night." Two possibilities exist: One, they had a pilot out there, and when the squad was rescued, he didn't want to be noticed and asked them not to let them know who it was. Or two..... it just wasn't their time.
