The rest of Echo Squad quickly regrouped with Redwood, giving her and Fire's team some much needed backup. They still didn't have many options besides stand and fight though, so that was what Redwood planned on doing. They were here to clear out the outpost after all, and it seemed like most of the Militia troops were on their position.

Fire was running out of energy quickly, his invisibility spell flickered and died and he was shot twice in the horn and a non fatal wound to the chest he quickly passed out and fell onto one of the Militia soldiers who threw his unconscious body into a pile of ashes

"Get a medic on Fire," ordered Redwood without looking away from the Militia soldier she was shooting.

 

Echo Squad's medic got Fire behind cover and began to tend to his wounds. "That's probably gonna grow back," he said as he looked at his horn.

 

"Sierra, how's our exit lookin'?" said Redwood into her radio.

 

"Better do it quick before reinforcements get here," ca,e the response.

Echo Squad's medic got Fire behind cover and began to tend to his wounds. "That's probably gonna grow back," he said as he looked at his horn.

 

"Sierra, how's our exit lookin'?" said Redwood into her radio.

 

"Better do it quick before reinforcements get here," ca,e the response.

The last remaining member of Fire's team made a wall of ice just behind the doorway to funnel the attacking ponies into the main building one by one his pistol ran out of ammo so he picked up a dead Militia's combat shotgun and fired on the attackers to conserve magic

"Fire, can y'all box in th' last of th' Milita troops in one place?" said Redwood, still firing at the onslaught of soldiers.

 

Echo Squad and Delta Squad could only last so long, and they needed to retreat soon. Luckily, even if they weren't able to clear out the outpost like this, Redwood had a plan in place.

there was no reply from fire but the team mate did what he could to create some form of pen to keep the troops in, whilst they were trying to break through the ice he threw a grenade into the pen and waited for the explosion to take the troops out, a loud boom confirmed that the plan had worked

Redwood picked up Fire and said, "Everypony, retreat out th' back entrance! Sierra's coverin' our exit!" Echo Squad and Delta Squad began their retreat from the outpost, making it out safety through the back thanks to Sierra Squad. Once they were a safe distance away, Redwood gave an order to Sierra through her radio, and just a few seconds after, the outpost went up in flames.

Redwood picked up Fire and said, "Everypony, retreat out th' back entrance! Sierra's coverin' our exit!" Echo Squad and Delta Squad began their retreat from the outpost, making it out safety through the back thanks to Sierra Squad. Once they were a safe distance away, Redwood gave an order to Sierra through her radio, and just a few seconds after, the outpost went up in flames.

Fire's horn shot off some magical discharge which floated through the air for a bit and then poofed harmlessly into nothing but some ash and bits of lead from the bullets which fell to the ground, his coat was blackend by the ashes of the ponies he had killed and smelt terrible

Sierra Squad regrouped with Echo Squad and Delta Squad, and they began the hike back to the ship. Fire had done a much better job than Redwood thought he would, and Knifepoint was even more surprised. The whole way back, Redwood carried Fire on her back.

the top half of Fire's horn snapped off and fell to the ground he was awoken by the pain of part of his horn literally falling off of his body, "w-what happened..." he said looking around from Redwood's back he had no control over what spells came out of his horn and ended up incinerating a chair

"Y'all took a couple bullets and ah had to carry y'all back here," said Redwood. "Oh, by th' way, th' doc said that y'all should take a couple of these, and yer horn should grow back by tomorrow mornin'." She handed Fire a small unmarked bottle of pills from her coat.

"horn? grow back? tomorrow!?" Fire said sitting bolt upright he looked around and sniffed the air, "oh fuck what is that smell!?" he covered his nose to stop him from smelling said smell, he looked down and then looked at Red not saying anything realising what or who his body was covered with

She had to admit that Fire had fought bravely, and he did a much better job than anypony would have expected, especially Knifepoint. It was looking like Redwood didn't make a mistake in transferring him after all.

She had to admit that Fire had fought bravely, and he did a much better job than anypony would have expected, especially Knifepoint. It was looking like Redwood didn't make a mistake in transferring him after all.

Fire's last team mate came in. "fire, you alright bud?" he said noticing the missing part of his horn, he bandaged it to stop him from incinerating anything else 

"yeah... w-where's Jennifer?" Fire said looking around for the mare

"Jennifer's dead Fire... after you passed out she was shot through the neck and died" the team mate said

Fire's head hit the table when he heard Jennifer wasn't the only one they had lost, he left the room early and hid underneath his bed crying, he had known Jenny since childhood they joined the Gator teeth together she was always a better fighter than him

Redwood followed Fire back into his room and bent down so she could talk to him. "Fire, ah've been down th' road yer on right now, and listen to me: it ain't yer fault that she died and it shouldn't have been y'all in her place. Jenny knew th' risks, and she died fightin' fer somethin' important."

Fire didn't reply but looked over at Red tears streaming down his face he still thought he should've done something to stop her from dying like she did,

"FIRE? YOU IN HERE?" Fire's team mate came rushing in "Commander Ma'am do you know the current location of FireBall?"

Redwood then turned her attention Fire and said, "Y'all were wounded and outta commission, there wasn't anythin' y'all could've done to help Jenny. It's a hard pill to swallow, but it's somethin' y'all just gotta accept."

Redwood then turned her attention Fire and said, "Y'all were wounded and outta commission, there wasn't anythin' y'all could've done to help Jenny. It's a hard pill to swallow, but it's somethin' y'all just gotta accept."

Fire looked up at Red he looked completely shattered he looked back down and hugged himself before rolling out from underneath the bed still crying his eyes out, he held the pills to re grow his horn in his hooves not sure whether he should take them or not

Fire was a wreck, so Redwood put her hoof around his shoulder. "Listen, this probably ain't th' first time y'all lost somepony, and ah can almost guarantee it ain't gonna be th' last." She then took a set of dog tags from her coat that belonged to Jenny and handed them to Fire.

Fire held the dogtags to his chest and looked up, he seemed to mutter something under his breath a vague "I'll never forget you" could be heard before he burst into tears once again burying his face in his hooves, he had lost ponies before but never felt like this... he didn't know why

Keeping her hoof around Fire's shoulder, Redwood said, "Y'know, back when ah was nineteen and just made it to Ranger, mah until got ambushed by raiders. We had to hole up in a ruined building, and th' fightin' lasted fer two hours until th' raiders figured we weren't worth it. Ah took two bullets in th' leg and was stuck in that building, and ah had to watch while th' ponies in mah unit who weren't already dead bleed out."

"Red... can you keep a secret?" Fire said looking up at Redwood "Before I joined the Gator teeth... I was a soldier in the Militia... it was after they stormed my home town, they killed everypony but me and Jennifer... they took us back to their base and trained us, Jennifer became an officer and I served underneath her... in our first battle we ran away hiding in the swamps away from prying eyes, It was because of her that I'm alive today... then I caught wind of you ponies and joined up... the reason I act so dumb is because I just never want to do what they made me ever again..."

If Fire was trained like he said he was, he could prove to be invaluable.

"yeah... it's tough though... without Jennifer's help I would have been *gulp* disposed of..." the door slammed open sounding like a gun shot and Fire jumped so high he nearly went through the ceiling "sorry!" a pony said sticking his head in "wrong room!" he closed the door and walked off
