I don't think she was a student of Twilight, Opaline actually probably have a very ancient backstory, she's around the same age as Luna and Celestia, so a lot must have happened to her, of course she shows up during Twilight's reign, so there must've been a lot of interactions between the two and we don't know, but, she grew a tree of harmony, she had the hell of Misty, but she still learned about it somehow, maybe with Twilight? I just don't think she betrayed her or anything because the story implies she already presented herself as a threat.
