RIP Paul Di'Anno of Iron Maiden

It is with a heavy heart I must inform you all that Paul Di'Anno, the original singer of Iron Maiden, has passed away at the age of 66. 

If it wasn't for Paul, Iron Maiden may never have broken out of the British metal scene. Sure, Bruce Dickenson took things to soaring new heights. But even after they figuratively and literally took off with Bruce, fans still had fondness for Di'Anno's grittier, borderline punk approach on the debut and on Killers. Life in the dark corners and alleyways, stories of urban fantasy and Gothic horror, filtered through speed metal energy. A prelude to Maiden's glory stories of the past, present and future beyond space and time. Without that gritty start, one of the biggest metal bands in the world may never have been. And Paul Di'Anno managed to capture the very beginnings of Metal as a stand alone genre, not once, but twice. Even with health issues worsening over the years, Paul still recorded and performed.
