Creating/Remaking Music

Obviously, we have a lot of amazing musicians here on the forums. And I am sure each one of them have a special trick or technique they use to help them in what they do.

 

Part of the reason I am posting this, is because I have always been into covering songs, especially when I cover them in a different genre. Ska Metal/Rock/Metal is the music I am really into, and those are the songs I like to learn/recreate. The problem is, I swear none of them are any good, and sometimes they don't even end up sounding like I want them to.

 

So, I was hoping to have some of you awesome artists share what it is you do that not only helps you, but could help other musicians here in creating/remaking their own music.
