Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion?

So, I've had my iMac for about 2 months now and I've been no stranger to downloading productive applications for it. My iMac is currently running on 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), and through searching the Internet, it seems to be a popular choice -- if not the most popular choice.

Now, as I am an avid buyer of productivity apps, I would like to be able to get apps for movie-editing, word-processing and the likes. But the most professional ones require me to upgrade to at least Lion (10.7), but I've heard bad things about this OS, plus it isn't available for purchase on the App Store. Mountain Lion (10.8), however, has had rather favourable reception and is really cheap (£14). It adds cool new features and improves connectivity with iPods, iPads or any other iDevice. But even still, a good amount of people have preferred Snow Leopard to it.

So the base question is, do you think that I should upgrade? Sorry if I seem to be a bit vague, but I'm just wanting some opinions to help me make the right choice. If it helps, I enjoy making music on my Mac, I play some Steam games like Portal, and I use a photo-editing application quite a lot.

I saw the title of the thread and I thought we were comparing animals

OT: I honestly don't know too much about this however, I have learned that one should always trust the reviews of other buyers mostly because, well... they're quite literally always right

But that's up to you

I would say check them both out, if you like the way one works over the other, then there you go...

Well, I've just decided to stick with Snow Leopard. After hearing lots of opinions on Mac websites and Forums, the answer almost always seems to be this:

Snow Leopard > Mountain Lion > Lion

What else I've came to see is that you can't really downgrade your iMac to the previous OS without some sort of external storage device, and even then it's still risky. And those cool features that I was talking about? Not so cool to me; or at least not the Facebook intergration part (I barely use FB).

Thanks for your suggestions though :)
